it didnt surprise me when he out qualified schumacher he was one of the quickest racers round a single lap & he was from the golden era of formula one were arguably you had some of the greatest drivers of all time.
Both Qualifying sessions were conducted with fresh tyres and enough fuel for one or sometimes two 'hot laps' . Once Qualifying was over the car's set up were completely changed for the race. ie there was no parc ferme conditions! Therefore to suggest Mansell sacrificed his race by racing with a Qualifying set up is quite frankly ridiculous! He outqualified Schumacher fair and square and completely destroyed Hill's time in the same car!
In the race, Mansell got too much wheel spin off the line, allowing Schumacher to get the jump & so as to avoid holding Damon up he went off the racing line at the first corner to let him through. This in turn meant his tyres picked up dirt causing him to run wide and off track three corners later damaging the floor of his car in the process...this then was the cause of his relatively poor pace in the race. However despite this damage he still held off a determined Berger to win on his comeback!
He did but in 1994 Aryton Senna then driving for Williams was killed. This left Williams without a second driver and F1 without a high profile driver. So Frank Williams arranged a guest appearance at the French GP. However Mansell was having a torid second indy car season. So Bernie Eccleston helped arrange a break in Mansell contract to drive the last 3 races of the F1 season. Mansell actually won the Australian GP after Hill and Schumacher retired.
@@GarethT902 Mansell drove a race in the late 2000's? The Indy Car schedule is over before F1, so I can see him going back in October and November. What year did he win after Hill and Schumacher were done?
+Sir Jammer I'm irish and not an easy fan of anything british, but this guy was a monster , a mans man, took a car by the scruff of the neck and wrung its neck... loved watching this man drive an F1 car.... watching him race Alesi at suzuka ,,,,,, F1 has not been the same ... F1 now is shit can't overtake anymore can't be a bully ..........LOAD OF SHIT NOW .....
I have no doubt that had Sir Frank, the following year, put Nige in the Williams along side Damon instead of Coulthard we would now be looking at Nigel Mansell F1 World Champion 1992,1995 and 1996. He would have made far better use of the very strong Williams Renault FW17 and would have narrowly beaten Schumacher in '95 before going onto dominate the '96 season in the FW18.
It would have been interesting if Nigel had remained at Williams for 1993 and how his stature as a top f1 driver would have changed in the relative scheme of things that is. He seemed to get more out of the active Williams than Prost ever did. Well I guess the world would have never found out what a great oval racer Nigel was. I mean, he was pretty much untouchable as a rookie on ovals.
As an American I'm very glad he came to CART/Indianapolis 500. Nitwits over here needed to know that there's other important motorsports events/personalities outside of Indy & _SMASHCAR_ racing.
I was a fan of Prost as a young teenager but Mansell was incredible. In all fairness had Nigel remained at Williams for 93 he would have been champion again. He was fast, in top form with a car that suited him.
Dave, you clearly have zero knowledge of Formula One....."Mansell knew he would be outpaced in the race so he went for glory with pole" and "he set up his car like crap for qualifying but had no race pace"??????????? what? Here is a little education for you. Back in 1994 the race weekend format was a one hour Friday Qualifying followed by a one hour saturday qualifying session with the best time from either session determining the grid slot.
02:20, "The car's lost a lot of downlow? download?" what is he reffering to? The car has lost downforce or it's lost low down torque? The latter seems unlikely. I've always wondered how the FW16B handled differently to the FW14B.
I remember being at Brands Hatch when Mansell beat Piquet. Incredible racing, just incredible.
A long time ago. Seems like another world.
I think it was, times change fast.
nigel mansell my favourite racer

I scived off work to be there, it were great!
Nigel Mansell in the late 80s and early 90s was massive news in Britain.
In the race, Mansell got too much wheel spin off the line, allowing Schumacher to get the jump & so as to avoid holding Damon up he went off the racing line at the first corner to let him through. I could have sworn he drove at least 2 years in CART.
You are right, he drove 2 CART seasons.

1:50 several months later, he did the same in Australia as a winner.
Agree Phil. If he'd got the 95 seat he would've been triple WDC. What a shame.
RED 5 the lion

philrich92 Well said 👏 Mansell was a Special Talented driver.

@@gunner2755it’s what I think too. What a shame he couldn’t or wouldn’t compete in 93 with Prost ( I am French)
Amazing and I thought the A1's ate up that start/finish straight quick! They're like milkfloats compared wiv this haha!
thanks
If Mansell stayed at Williams in 1995, who would have been in the no 1 driver?
Hill or Mansell?

Thats cool
@philrich92 Mansell did not win in france in '94, Schumacher did
@gold333 Download ie: downforce
Get back to Work!!! 😂😂😂
he did the same to hill in top gears shitty car lol
Mansell 1:44.6
Hill 1:46.3
Mansell was by miles a better driver than Hill. Mansell deserved more than 1 world titles.
