In 1994 Mansell made a Formula One comeback. After the untimely death of Ayrton Senna, he returned to Formula One with Williams replacing rookie David Coulthard for the French Grand Prix and the last three races of the season. Mansell was paid approximately £900,000 per race, compared to Williams' lead driver at the time, Damon Hill being paid £300,000 for the entire season.[15] Mansell's return was helped by Bernie Ecclestone helping unravel his contracts in the United States. It was important for F1 to have a world champion driving that season and they needed Mansell. Mansell wasn't as quick as Damon Hill in race trim but signs that his speed were coming back were evident in Japan during a fantastic battle with the Ferrari of Jean Alesi. Mansell took his final Grand Prix victory, the Australian Grand Prix, which was the final race of the season having out-qualified the two contenders for the title, Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher, in the process. The plan was initially for Mansell to protect Hill from Schumacher, but both drivers passed him at the start and eventually collided, handing Schumacher his 1st World Title.
Williams had an option on Mansell's services for 1995 which Mansell was sure they would take. However, Williams opted for youth over experience and hired Coulthard.
When Grand Prix's were held at Brands back in the 1980's, I used to be able to hear them from my back garden......I live about 10 miles away from the circuit :O Engines were engines back in those days :)
such tracks are amazing. but Brands H and Donigton cant afford a race. but the logistics are good. 7 companies are from england...

Nige was my all time favourite.
I remember I watched this video for the very first time in 2011 and it's still gold. I am Brazilian, I miss Ayrton Senna and I think the Lion was the best choice to replace him. This car unfortunately don't bring good memories, but was really beautiful. Cheers from Brazil!

Thanks so much for posting this, I was actually there - it was a brilliant day and yes most people I talked to said they did all thrw a sickie to come and see our Nige - I did actually get to meet hm (that's me at the beginning with the blonde hair lol!). He was and always will be a legend! Thanks again for a great video

Not THAT epic, but so much better than the nowdays killer-flys =) The NA-3.5l-F1-engines of 1989 until 1994 are the gods of sound in f1-history.
... and Nigel and Ayrton the gods of driving ....

Why on why did Williams allowed Coulthard to race at Silverstone? Surely Mansell was the better choice.

senna ayrton In terms of popularity: yes, in terms of driving abilites: I doubt that, Mansell's record against teammates doesnt look good, he lost 7 out of 12 seasons tbh.
