I see a lot of comments about how OSUMB is boring and always does the same thing and honestly this is why it's so IMPORTANT to have a few traditions that don't change even a little bit. Can you imagine how much it must have meant to the alums who graduated nearly 50 years ago to be welcomed back like heroes with thunderous applause and love, and to be able to march down the field just like they did when they were young? It's emotional and lovely.
A lot of truth here. As a band nerd, at first thought, yeah it may get repetative hearing the same songs, but when you march the field after so many years wearing your old colors, it’s like, now I remember why I joined this band in the first place! The music!
I will say, when the Pandemic is over I would love to watch all of them reunited again and March down that exact field and show triumphant that they are still here and ready to show the world we aint just ordinary marching band, we are a family!
Awww The Older Drum Major at the end got me all teary eyed @ 7:25 It's like the current band was staring into their future. As of now they are all alumni. Cherish all your life moments! Even if's going back to march for "Alumni Day" Life goes by so fast! I was just watching one from 1986 and they had Alumni from the 30s!
I love when the alumni band comes out and they have all the former drum majors if that’s what their called lined up and I love the two older ones at the bottom right corner that even though they are up there in age they still have that pride and are like hell yeah I’m coming back for this
maryland fan here, legitimately the coolest fucking thing ive seen. the whole concept of an alumni band taking the field is genius and pays great tribute. incredible job
@@andre7089 Agreed, I live in upper Ohio, some things here are cool but it mainly sucks. But the OSUMB is such a good band and you can see their dedication.
This is awesome! I really think Ohio State has got the best college band in the country and I am amazed at the size of their alumni band. There is so much pride in belonging to Ohio State!
Wow am watching this from the UK, I'll admit to not know everything that's going on but dam this is amazing to watch, am even singing along to the band
I’m English and it’s the first time I’ve seen this and I’m wetting myself laughing. Especially the one with the high kicks and bending over backwards until his feathers touch the floor. Move over Monty Python.
So touching and moving to see the alumni perform. 🎷🥁🎺 Look at those drum majors...they still got that kick! I guess that precision stays with you for years. No one compares to the OSU marching band. 🙌
Ohio state is pure showman ship. They move like one, so smooth and like one large catapiller with thiusands of legs. No comparison. Pure professionals. Love watchibg them. Makes all the rest look silly
Thank you!!! What a steady hand you have. The footage you took was a joy to watch and I can't wait to show my kids so they can see the showmanship and share our pride of this fantastic band. Thanks for recording this and sharing it!
It's not given to many of us to re-live our glory years. At 7:25 ... bless their hearts, those ex-drum majors did their best :-) Brits like me get as soppy and sentimental as everyone else, but we try to hide it. This was MAGNIFICENT!
Alumni Day is a yearly tradition, usually the first home game of the season/ It's great seeing past members of the band, drum majors, and cheerleaders come back to "do it just one more time". Some are recent members while others are getting up there in age. The two drum majors in line closest to the camera were the oldest to come back for this particular Alumni Day. The second from the near end was around 90 years old IIRC, and he came back every year. The above video was 2014 so I don't know if he is still with us.
It makes me cry when ever I hear TBDBITL, I took my band-geek mom to that game! A friend was selling tickets for her grandparents and I had mentioned my mom was a band-nerd, so she sold me the alumni game tickets. What a magical event!
Wow! Just Wow! I didn’t go to college until I retired from the military, but, this is a breath taking show! Thanks for sharing this video. Hey Bing, the Buckeyes are great! I was in the service with “Bing”.

I LOVE this band! The Drum Major I could watch all day! The BAND is AMAZING! I’ve lived in Traverse City Mi for 48 years but I will ALWAYS be a BUCKEYE FAN! Love my BUCKEYE’S ❤❤❤
imagine having more alumni come for your alumni game than pretty much all schools have in their entire bands. It's also so sad to know that John Waters was standing right there on the 45 crying his eyes out during Carmen Ohio because this was the game after he got fired
It was actually the third game after his wrongful termination. The first game was an away game and the second was a night game vs Virginia Tech. While I can't speak for the university, the band, or their alumni, since this was the first day game vs a non-marquee opponent, I'm sure it was a logical fit.
The drum major second from the near end of the line (the Alumni drum majors are wearing white pants and are out in front of the band) was around 90 at this Alumni Day game in Sept of 2014, IIRC.
It's neat i guess ... In watching it .... But what is the point of this I don't understand why it what is happening ... Do these people even know why they are clapping
oh yes they do! This band has decades of tradition, and anyone who went there experienced it. They are clapping for the entertainment and the great tradition - hey they know what to expect! Also, the big state universities have huge statewide loyalty even for folks who never attended college. It is a great source of pride (don't ever disturb a Univ of Kentucky fan during a basketball game, just saying) for the whole state.
Not sure what you mean by the ridiculous walking. Marching bands in the Big10 typically walk in this fashion. It's called a "chair step" and generically it is defined by the thigh coming parallel to the ground at the top of each step. All bands in the Big 10 have their own take on it, however. The Drum Major strut is a traditional thing simply to show athleticism and provide visual entertainment in addition to the band's formations. I, myself, am the Drum Major one of the local high schools in the Columbus area. I can understand why this stuff seems weird. I watch a lot of HBCU bands and get confused, as well as some of the more competition style marching bands in the local area high schools. Hope I could settle some of your curiosity!
@@haydenalley2240 Thanks for your reply and the explanation as i can now understand why. I think i may have come over a bit too strong before calling it ridiculous, sorry about that, and must admit that the discipline amongst everyone is just about perfect. It must take a lot of training. Sometimes i can be a little too quick to criticise before understanding why.
@@underwaterbubbles It's all good! I didn't mean to come off defensive either. I completely understand why you'd think that, I thought the same when we first started marching in high school. Glad I could help though, and yes, it is a lot of work. They practice all summer and there's an insane amount of practice that goes into TBDBITL's marching.
