This was a really great video! I still have my knowledge book from 1989, right before I hurt my back & got sent home. Later (right after 9/11) I got on as an Army MP (reserve) while working the civilian side for State of Indiana. It's nice to be able to take a trip down memory lane! SEMPER FI!

Drill instructor Sgt Frick… our platoons “Heavy”. I was the fastest recruit in our entire series at climbing the rope. I won our platoons internal competition and then won the race between all the platoons fastest rope climbers. Back in the day I used to be a pull-up monster. I did 29 dead hang pull-ups and could zip up a rope without even using my feet. Our senior DI gave our recruit platoon a pizza as a reward for bringing that climbing trophy back to his quarterdeck. Sadly i lost my “recruit knowledge” book. Great video devil.

This kind of thing is always a blast! My BCT and AIT began on 6 June 1980, and the only things I still have from my 6 years in the Army are my DD214, a P38, and my weapons qualification badges.

I was in Delta Co. 1117 back in 96. We had the nephew of the Paramount movies owner in my platoon. His mom sent a huge care package with probably 75 brand new VHS movies. It resided in the duty hut until one Sunday afternoon in third phase. We got to vote on which movie to watch. I wanted a comedy at that point but Full Metal Jacket it was. Because I got to watch that movie DURNING boot camp, I can say it was pretty realistic and accurate. I still have a box with those goodies in it. War bag, the hygine bag, the huck towel, and the good old scuzz brush!

The mundane items of a soldier's kit are so much more interesting to me than things like the weapon or armour. The tools and bits that make up day to day life

Brings back memories. I went through mine in 2019, then threw it out in 2020. Moving, lost a lot of things. It was nice to see again after many years. I was in MCRD SanDiego as well, but in 1987. Yep, the year Full Metal Jacket hit the theaters. I saw it with a group of Marines while on leave after completing our MOS training. It was a bit of a refresher after boot camp! Can't tell you the feelings coursing through my mind at the time. Felt like they showed too much & gave away a national secret! Ha ha! Saw my SDI at my first duty station KMCAS in Hawaii. That was some duty station. Loved it & the travel accross the vast expanse of Asia. Until Desert Shield/Storm occured. Was on a RimPac with none other than the legendary Bob Hope, went to Acapulco on that float. Met Gomer Pyle, can't remember his real name right now, when I was going into a store in Hawaii & he & his partner were leaving the grocery store. That was a weird meeting, shook hands & chatted breifly with him. Later in the desert I met Steve Martin on an USO show. He was leaving as we were coming in after a patrol. My company clerk heard me ask about the vehicles & who was there, after I heard & he was leaving , I made a negative comment. Steve heard from my company clerk, & he got out of the caravan to take a picture with me. Very cool. I don't know where the photo is, had a fire 2 years ago. Anyway, Steve is in dessert cami's, & I am in woodland cami's ,, yeah, in the early phases of Desert Shield, we didn't have the appropriate cami's yet! Semper Fi.

Man I'm getting old. Went through Army basic in June, 1977. At Fort Lenard Wood, MO. Infantry school at Fort Benning, GA to get the 11C MOS. That's 0341 in the Marines.
That's 47 years ago. No wonder why I don't recognize military equipment that's shown on TV. They still had canned C-rations back in the day. At least that piece of junk M-561 Gamma Goat is no longer used. The old M-274 Cargo Mule was the funnest military truck ever. Was like driving a bumper car all day long. I still have my military driver's licence. Yes I am duely authorized to drive the old M-151a3 Jeep. Don't beven ask if I can drive a Hummv. All the above is now on display at the museum. Was a heavy mortar crewman on the M-30, four-deuce
mortar. The only mortar ever to shoot nuclear shells. Carried M-16a1 rifles and M-1911a1, .45 acp pistol. Had M-272a2 Law rockets and the Red-Eye anti aircraft missile. Way before the Stinger missile. So long ago that Fred Flintstone was the 1st Sargent. Barny Rubble was the Lieutenant.

Sometime after 1990 'Uncle Sam's Misguided Children' changed the boot camp agenda from the Vietnam type format (Full Metal Jacket) - 13 weeks straight (for MCRD SD recruits it included the 2 weeks at Camp Pendleton) to the Warrior School format which was something like 8 weeks of Marine history, tradition, rules, drill and PT - then on to Warrior School for field training and combat rifle training. Don't know if the change made better Marines but it prepared them more for infantry school. Remember - 'Every Marine a rifleman.' I have 'The Guidebook for Marines' and the 'Essential Subjects' handbooks from my time in the 1980s. Don't think they issued them after 1990 or so. - Semper Fi

I'm 28 and losing weight to join, do you have any advice for someone older looking to join?

If you;re joining the Corps, I'd say get used to running, it's a pretty big part of boot camp. Practice trucking as well, get yourself a decent backpack, load it up and take a hike with it on. Start with low weight and short distance and increase over time. And if you live west of the Missippi that means you'll be going to MCRD San Diego, so add hills to your trucking route because Camp Pendleton is very hilly and if you're not used to it they'll really kick your butt.
As far as the DIs go, don't let them get to you. When they're yelling and screaming at you or making you push, do jumping jacks, etc. it's nothing personal, Just do what they tell you to do, do it fast, and always respond to any of their commands at the top of your lungs. If you don't like attention, don't volunteer for squad leader or guide, those jobs will always put you in the DI's crosshairs. And no matter what, do not volunteer for anything in general, esp. if they don't say what you're volunteering for. One of my DIs did this once, he called for some volunteers and everyone who raised their got taken to the quarterback (front of the barracks) and got bent.

Hurry up, I think the cut off is 29? The hardest part of bootcamp is not the physical aspetcs, it's getting along with people. I was 22 when I went through, I was among the oldest, and sometimes had trouble dealing with silly 18 year olds in the group. If you can keep a good attitude, you'll be fine. Oh, and above all DO THINGS QUICKLY. Don't dawdle, don't hesitate.

You're going to have a hard time with Recruit training at 28. We had a 21 year old in our Platoon, he didn't make it. Like one of the others said, Physical conditioning is the key for recruit training. If you are not in shape and you're over weight, they will cut your already reduced meal portions by making you a "diet recruit". You will hate life. Being physically and mentally tough is essential, the older you are, the more difficult it will be.

Ha! Knowledge , ours was a big red plastic binder at recruit depot parris island 1982 “ps. Is that a pic of your “hog” that is being blacked out? If our DIs found pics of our girlfriends they had us put them up on a hog board

People say “the GWOT was a horrible time to be in the military” I say it was the best. The military nowadays just isn’t like how it was back then. Men and women were more patriotic. Nowadays I gotta worry whether some nonbinary is gonna go postal due to me possibly misgendering them. And the sad part it the higher ups s really give into the woke BS. So for now I’m staying a CIVI until we get a new commander and chief.

So if my Marine Corps math is correct, your rifle certificate was awarded in September 2002, you probably went in June 2002? I went in June 25, 2002 at PI. 😂
