Nothing like stompin some grapes, been listening to Mel since I was born, he was one of the best, last of the greats, one hell of an entertainer, great songs, never had a bad song and was funny as the day was long, could make you laugh till your ribs hurt. May God bless Mel and his family for sharing him with us. If you can’t get in a good mood after listening to this song, you are truly sh#t out of luck.
They had a real country sound featuring lots of slide guitar, acoustic guitar, fiddle, and banjo. The Country they play today sounds more like Lynard Skynard with mostly distorted electric guitars and electric bass..
Hate to break it to you but the Statesiders rarely if ever played on Mels recording sessions. If you will read the album liners it was Nashvilles best session players.SAme way with Charlie Rich playing on most of his hits. The piano player was likely Hargus Pig Robbins.THe Statesiders was just put on their to highlight the name of his band. And It worked!!
I was a huge Mel Tillis fan.Met him the first time at age 17 at a concert in Ft Myers fl.I was fortunate to be able to go backstage .Mel was very gracious and sang parts of several songs that I told him I liked.Later I was standing outside his bus "Tom T Halls old bus that I guess he had bought until a new one arrived. He then invited me on his bus and I was thrilled.I told him he should be the CMA Entertainer of the Year. And in two years 1976 he was honored with that award..First time I saw him was in Orlando at radio station WHOO 990 am listener appreciation night at the Bob Carr Auditorium.Free show.It was super .His brother was selling souvinirs.
One of my favorite artists to see live in concert, Mel Tillis & The Statesiders played The Crazyhorse Steakhouse in Santa Ana, CA., back in the early 1980's. He was Sooo funny, not just from his stutter humor, but also with his jokes between songs. The joke about coming home to find his wife in bed with Porter Wagoner was priceless !!! Thanks for the great songs, and the great memories, Mel...

Most people don't realize how great Mel's band "The Statesiders" were. The arrangements and the playing on these songs are simply incredible.
