      Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage
There is a saying among religious Jews concerning divine truth written in their holy Bible (The Old Testament), which is that anything true is not new, and anything new is not true. This means that anything considered as "divine truth" is measured against the standards of the Old Testament. This idea corresponds to the following Bible verses:
      1)
      Isaiah 8:20
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
      2)
      Deuteronomy 4:2
2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.
      3)
      Proverbs 30:6
6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
      4)
      Ecclesiastes 7:20
20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
These verses apply to all people, including Jesus also. After all, he taught them himself.
      ---------------------------------------------
Biblical Rules concerning laws of divorcement
      Deuteronomy 24:1-4
24 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
2 And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.
      3 And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;
4 Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the Lord: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
      ---------------------------------------------
Did Jesus contradict the Biblical laws that he also taught?
      Matthew 5:17-19 & 31-32
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
      ---------------------------------------------
Jesus reconfirms the duration of God's holy law, but then unfortunately adds to it.
      Luke 16:17-18
17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.
18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.
      ••• Proverbs 30:6•••
6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
      •••Deuteronomy 4:2•••
2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.
      ---------------------------------------------
Jesus continues adding to the law of God, saying that Moses made exceptions for the people, which was not true.
      Matthew 19:3-11
3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
      •••Isaiah 8:20•••
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

I always say to people who are divorced or widowed find God first. Allow God to control your entire life. You will discover there is more to life than getting married again. I know some people who live life to the full and never feel alone. For the widowed, you are free to marry again but consult God first. God knows best.

After 27 1/2 years married, my wife handed me divorce papers after her heart disconnected from me over 8 years ago. I prayed for reconciliation that never happened, even though she claims to be a Christian. I know I am not perfect in my relationship with Christ, but have always pursued Him. Now trying to pick up the pieces of my life as the divorce finalized on Jan. 25. Just never thought this would happen and so sad that my wife listened to the enemy for so many years and hardened her heart. But God gives free will and this was all her choice.

My divorce was finalized a week before yours. (25 years in my case). No adultery (or any abuse for that matter but that's besides the point). It was a court ordered divorce so my conscience is clear. But I'm still married in God's eyes so I still wear my ring.

I agree. It's not your fault that she left. Satan whispered in her ear and told her it was fine to leave just "because". You wanted to keep the marriage, but the reconciliation didn't happen. That is her choice, not yours. I hope down the road you find a wonderful Christian woman who treats you as you deserve.

maybe she has reasons why she divorced you. She must be tired mentally in all the chores and work and children and you without your knowing. I also attempted to divorce my husband due to his bad habits and he is an unbeliever but I did not do it, because I'm still hoping (a sickness of all martyr women) he can still change and for the sake of my children. He needs salvation and deliverance.

C.J. I am in the same boat. My husband was a serial adulterer. I put up with so much but trusted God would change him. He kicked us out several times. The last time for a married coworker 20 year his junior. He stopped even having anything to do with his 15 year old son at the time. He is due to get a big inheritence in May and I was just served divorce papers. So much more going on. I am struggling to heal emotionally and wonder if I am lacking in my faith for us to be going thru everything. I didn't think it would happen again....I divorced him in 2009 because of his adultery and his kicking up out for a girl 20 years his junior then also (she was only 19 and he was 39). When I divorced him it drove him crazy and he would take no for an answer when he pursued me to get me back. He even pretended to be a christian. I remarried him and I am now in worse shape this time, emotionally. My son had a breakdown and so did I. I could write a book but just know you are not alone. I will pray for you, please pray for me and my family. God bless!!

Not what Daniel says, but the BIBLE SAYS: But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother [to establish a home with his wife], and the two shall become one flesh; so that they are no longer two, but [are united as] one flesh. Therefore, what God has united and joined together, man must not separate [by divorce].” In the house the disciples began questioning Him again about this. And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; and if a woman divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”
      Mark 10:6‭-‬12 AMP
Or do you not know, brothers and sisters (for I am speaking to those who know the Law), that the Law has jurisdiction [to rule] over a person as long as he lives? For the married woman [as an example] is bound and remains bound by law to her husband while he lives; but if her husband dies, she is released and exempt from the law concerning her husband. Accordingly, she will be designated as an adulteress if she unites herself to another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from the law [regarding marriage], so that she is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
      Romans 7:1‭-‬3 AMP
But to the married [believers] I give instructions-not I, but the Lord-that the wife is not to separate from her husband, (but even if she does leave him, let her remain single or else be reconciled to her husband) and that the husband should not leave his wife. A wife is bound [to her husband by law] as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry whomever she wishes, only [provided that he too is] in the Lord.
      1 Corinthians 7:10‭-‬11‭, ‬39 AMP
Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were sneering and ridiculing Him. So He said to them, “You are the ones who declare yourselves just and upright in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts [your thoughts, your desires, your secrets]; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God. “The Law and the [writings of the] Prophets were proclaimed until John; since then the gospel of the kingdom of God has been and continues to be preached, and everyone tries forcefully to go into it. Yet it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for a single stroke of a letter of the Law to fail and become void. “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from her husband commits adultery.
      Luke 16:14‭-‬18 AMP
But you say, “Why [does He reject it]?” Because the Lord has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously. Yet she is your marriage companion and the wife of your covenant [made by your vows]. But not one has done so who has a remnant of the Spirit. And what did that one do while seeking a godly offspring? Take heed then to your spirit, and let no one deal treacherously against the wife of your youth. “For I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with wrong and violence,” says the Lord of hosts. “Therefore keep watch on your spirit, so that you do not deal treacherously [with your wife].”

My first marriage to an unbeliever ended with domestic abuse and adultery - he got another woman pregnant and ruined her life too. Now he's in prison for nearly killing his new wife. I could have ended up dead. I divorced him even though it tore me apart to have to file for divorce, it meant I would be a single mother.
Years later, I am remarried to a man who loves God as much as I do, he was abandoned by his first wife, and now God has fixed a very broken situation for us both- we are now a family and my now husband has adopted my son and is helping me raise him as a Christian. I thank God for mending a broken situation, not just for me, but my little son. Remarriage in the right circumstances, led by God, can be absolutely fine 😁

I stayed though, and I tried to work through all of it. She eventually kicked me out and I lost my home and most of my property and our marriage. The aloneness comes and goes. It's been many months now. It's brought me closer to Christ again (one of the reasons she left me) but I still feel lacking often. Just learning lately that I can't remarry even though I was the victim... Knowing I'll never experience the touch and love of another again (I'm 37) is utterly heartbreaking to me right now. I'm holding on to the "one day there will be something better" after this life but I don't want this one to feel this bad. I try to keep a smile on my face every day and tell everyone "I'm okay" and that I'm doing well. Try to just go about my life. I pour myself into scripture, prayer, and meditation but it still feels daunting to know I will feel this hurt for probably many more decades. I don't really know what to do to feel better. Same situation but I'm 33..
In the end here there are two schools of thoughts some simply comes down to which translation you read KJV or other due to the fornication vs adultery argument.
The other like in our case abandonment. 1 corithians 7:15 they argue that if Paul gave another reason for remarriage he would be contradicting Jesus words on the sermon on the mount EXCEPT fornication/sexual immorality (based on translation). Which I don't believe is correct.
If we look at context Jesus spoke to Jewish folks and their culture. While Paul spoke to the Gentiles.. we end up with legalists which push people away from the cross.
Some people will say it's our cross to bear for actions of another.. do your own studying and consult God.
I hear you man sometimes you think it be a blessing to get hit by a bus and just have it ended so you don't have to go through life alone.. then die alone.

ONLY DEATH ENDS A MARRIAGE: For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an ADULTERESS: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law...(ROMANS 7:2-3 kjv)

Death does end a marriage. So does abandonment by a non-believing spouse (1 Cor 7:15). The Book of Matthew discusses adultery being another reason. It does mean that a believer HAS to divorce but those events can sever the marriage bond if the innocent party so chooses (yes, there is an innocent party). Death severs this bond, also. As for Romans 7: 2, 3. Great verses. I would hope that my wife, while I am still her husband, would not marry another person. That would definitely be adultery. If she did, I would be justified in divorcing her.

You should look up the word “dead” in the Greek. The word Paul uses doesn’t mean dead literally. It also means dead figuratively. There is another word they use for the word dead that means deceased. So the word dead Paul used applies to both widows and those who are divorced. Also “the law” freed women through divorce from the marriage. They were required to receive a bill of divorce. The bill of divorce freed her from the marriage. She could remarry but could not return to her former husband.

      3 And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;

If abandonment frees us to remarry, Jesus’ words in Luke 16 and Mark 10 are meaningless. If a marriage ends, someone inevitably abandoned the other. If there was no abandonment, there was no divorce. But Jesus didn’t just say if you divorce and remarry, you commit adultery. He said whoever marries the divorced person also commits adultery. That means whether you perpetrate the divorce or are the victim thereof, you cannot remarry without committing adultery.
The short answer is there are a few verses in 1 Corinthians 7 that people use in trying to justify divorce and remarriage. But to eliminate any confusion the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to summarize and conclude his teaching in this fashion.
    1 Corinthians 7:39
The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
If any of the previous verses legitimately justified divorce and remarriage, that would make the Holy Spirit very confused when he closed the teaching by saying only death ends the marriage bond.
The longer answer is as follows.
    1 Corinthians 7:15
But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under BONDAGE in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.
    1 Corinthians 7:39
The wife is BOUND by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
In verse 15 the word “bondage” in both the English and the Greek has the meaning of slavery/involuntary servitude. This refers back to verse 3-5.
    1 Corinthians 7:3-5
Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.
When you are married, your body doesn’t belong to you but to your spouse and you are required to provide the intimacy your spouse needs. Verse 15 simply states that if the unbeliever leaves: 1) you aren’t under bondage to fight the divorce and make them stay; and 2) after leaving, they cannot come back and demand sex or other marital benefits of the woman being required to submit as unto the Lord.
In verse 39 in Paul’s closing summary, the word “bound” in both the english and the Greek, has the meaning of being tied together. This refers to the one flesh union Jesus said is created in marriage.
    Matthew 19:5-6
And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
So when you read these passages in context with the rest of the chapter and scripture in general, there is no conflict.
If the unbeliever departs, the believer is not required to submit to that person whenever they show up or provide the marital benefits they were entitled to as a couple. But nonetheless, they are still bound, tied together, in the marriage union until the death of one or the other.

Brother, I think you're confused about 1 Corinthians 7:15. It just says to let the abandoning spouse go. It never said that someone can get married while the abandoning spouse is alive. If that was the case, it would contradict the scriptures listed earlier such as Matthew 16:18 and Romans 7:2. Since the Bible doesn't contradict itself, Romans 7 makes it clear that remarriage is approved after the death of a spouse.

    • @shadowmist1246

I agree with you regarding that 1 Corinthians 7:15 does not give license for divorce. Paul would have used divorce if he meant divorce as he used it elsewhere when referring to divorce. Separation achieves his stated goal of "keeping the peace". Separation gives a better opportunity for repentance and reconciliation than divorce does. Best to simply take Paul at his word and not try to read into his words --- that which he did not state. But if the unbeliever does leave and remarry, then the believer is no longer married and may remarry. (Matthew 19:9 and 5:32).

Because God's people left Him and worshiped other gods, then God could never be with them again because they committed spiritual adultery! The only way they could ever be reconciled back to Him, God himself had to die for the law of marriage to be broken! The husband had to die so she could be released from the law!
