Well glad to see someone here talking about food and finances. And at least the caller is willing to discuss the nature of what she is going through. Going out to eat and groceries is pretty common for people. A majority of money also goes to food as well. Sometimes we can all spontaneously spend on food and be over the budget. So being consistent takes a lot of self-discipline.

Budgeting has actually helped me with my food addiction. Budgeting showed me how much money I was spending and what is normal to be spending on food. By quitting smoking and cutting my food back to normal portions, I am able to afford a gym membership which is $150 where I live (yes, super expensive but the only gym in the rural area where I live). I had previously budgeted for cigarettes and a lot of food. Now I have switched that over to improving myself.

in 2009 I was 220 and now i'm 155. As someone who has lost and kept their weight off for 11 years, here are some tips which may or may not help and which may be easier said than done. 1) Don't keep junk food / snacks in the house, can't eat it if you don't have it in the house. 2) Don't go to the store hungry. 3) Weigh yourself, Weigh yourself, Weigh yourself. I personally weigh in once a day. If you do it once a week or once a month, it will slowly creep up on you. If you weigh once a day you can see it going up and do something about it. 4) If you quote "Go on a diet" you will get it all back at some point. Do not go on a "Diet", change your eating life style FOR LIFE!.

@@kerrynight3271 I agree. The struggle is real. I'm 2 years and 3 months in, and the struggle has been real to maintain my healthy lifestyle. I have found a few tools that help me a lot (two of which are inaccessible due to COVID-19) - my local YMCA, local farmer's market, local grocer, and ordering from Sun Basket (intermittently, I didn't do it for 2 years straight). My YMCA is closed, and I haven't felt comfortable going into the local grocery store because it is extremely small. Basically, I've adopted a whole foods diet and work out 4-5 days/5-7 workouts per week. I have changed my workouts to long brisk walks, yoga, and pilates due to the gym being closed. It's been challenging, though. I struggle with disordered eating tendencies, but eating whole, fresh, natural foods is more satisfying for my mind and body. It doesn't eliminate the problem but it helps a lot.

Carbohydrates. You may want to cut out simple carbs. I have a sugar addiction and eating potato chips, fries, and breads make the cravings worse. You'd be surprised how much sugar goes into just regular bread and I think the dopamine reaction to carbs is similar to sugars. If I have a lot of bread I get to craving sweets again. Even if I've managed to go weeks without a dessert, candy, or whatever.

As a food addict, I think she needs to give keto a solid try, which will decrease her appetite within 2 weeks and make kicking the addiction a lot easier .... due to the decreased appetite, this change could also easily lead her to doing Intermittent fasting (as it did for me and many others who do keto) which is THE CHEAPEST way of eating. When you’re only eating one or two larger meals a day, no snacks or non-water drinks, you’d be surprised at how low your grocery bill goes, even when WHAT you’re buying are items a lot more expensive than the junk you used to buy. 125lbs lost out of my 200lb weight loss goal. Ubereats and doordash etc really contribute to this, because it can respond to an impulse in just a few clicks. I strongly recommend you remove your credit card number from the account and then store it someplace inconvenient. This makes it impossible to use them impulsively. ( I know Ramsey says to cut them up, but we all know plenty have not.) I keep mine stored in an office far from my home. Credit cards are horrible for eating addictions and binge disorder, eating delivery services make it 1000 x worse.

from a money standpoint, I find that creating a substitute for eating out is the best way to lower costs, by trying to enjoy cooking at home and experiment with food. That could involve gardening and growing herbs/veggies. The more of an addiction to eating home cooked meals, the less tempted you will be to go eat greasy fast food. Plus if you make better food than a restaurant/fast food chain, you will probably want to just eat your own food

Start by only eating out once a day, then only every other day, then only on weekends, only on Saturdays, then never. I did a similar thing with spending when I was really struggling with emotional spending. I went from spending a couple hundred a day to only spending $20-$40 over the course of the weekend. I used to be a sugar/processed food addict. Part of my problem tied in with unresolved emotional problems. Food was a cooping mechanism. Secondly, I was addicted to processed sugar and processed foods. I didn’t take responsibility for the problem until I was diagnosed with an “incurable disease.” and bedridden for six months. The Doctors told me there was no cure and to get used to the condition.
Long story short by changing my eating habits (fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and meat in moderation) and daily walking. I have since dropped six prescription drugs I was supposed to be on for life! Have also lost 40 pounds. Have maintained this lifestyle for eight years. It’s not easy to do, but definitely possible. It will required a serious desire to want to change. And realize these are daily decisions I have to make for LIFE.
As Dave and his partner Mentioned, a strong support system is very helpful and necessary to kick the destructive habit of food addition. God never designed us to live in isolation of others. Healthy friendships that I could be real and honest with played a significant role to. Lastly developing my relationship with Jesus on a daily basis. Remember it will be a PROCESS to a changed life and there will be SETBACKS. Except setbacks and realize you will need to work through them. Get started and never give up! God has a great plan for your life, although you are responsible to do your part. He will ALWAYS do His part.

Your comment is so true. Fake food has no nutrition. so your body will want you to eat more in order to get more nutrition [OK I don't know if that is actually scientifically correct]
It takes about 3 to 6 weeks to switch from fake to real. But it is so worth it.
Also if you actually start to see food as nutrition, then if you were to go overboard and eat exactly the recommended, vitamin, minerals calorific value etc, you get to eat huge amounts.
Chronometer is a fantastic website/app that will tell you exactly what daily nutrition etc that you need. You put in everything you eat per day and it will give you the nutrient content and calories that you actually got. List the activates you did and it will tell you how many calories you burnt. Light housework, heavy gardening etc.
Over eating is an addiction; becoming addicted to good nutrition is a great replacement .

Fear, fear, and fear drives us to deny that fear instead of embracing it for the protection it is offering. When the fear or insecurity or whatever term you use to describe the feeling arises our natural reaction is to stuff it away and food is great at doing just that, 'stuffing' your feelings. Running away from fear as described above only intensifies it. Running towards it (way easier said than done) recognizes and disarms the fear. Great video and great advice IMO.

I was drinking way to much pop and my new years resolution was to cut back on pop. I only have it now when I go out to eat and it “comes” with the meal. I don’t buy it for the house and I don’t get a pop when it’s an extra on the side. So far it’s worked well and has really helped me cut back.

I have this issue too. I feel it’s such a big issue that sabotages my finances. I’ve been budgeting for years and food (eating out & takeaway) has always been my biggest struggle and the only category I regularly go over in. It’s difficult because I’m frugal and I don’t really spend money on anything outside of food. It’s my main indulgence and source of enjoyment. No matter how much I tell myself I’m gonna quit or reduce eating out, I literally never stick to it 😭. I do save and invest but it’s definitely not as much as I’ve like to. It’s hard because I’m still fit and slim, people don’t think it’s an issue and I can always talk myself into thinking I’m fine and it’s not an addiction cause I look ‘healthy’, cause I still have abs but it definitely is an issue.

SET A CASH ONLY FOOD BUDGET!!! Only bring the cash when you go to the grocery store and leave your card at home. Choose a grocery store far from you or buy only at farmers markets. Make a list of groceries and ingredients and stick to the list. You can still by sweets but in moderation. Come up with your favorite snacks and choose only a few that you will eat for the MONTH. Give yourself cheat days, you can start with 2 or 3 cheat days then work it down to 1 cheat day per week. You don't have to experience trauma to see a therapist, go to therapy and ask for some coping mechanisms. I hope she overcomes this, it's not easy trust me I know and I'm still working things out. Shame will definitely make things worse so don't be ashamed to tackle this issue. In fact be strong, own it and empower yourself. Say: "Ok this is what I'm doing, this is where I go wrong, and this is what I'm good to do to change it". It's definitely possible but it takes truth, intention, and support. I wish her the best.

"Where does this come from? Did you have a traumatic event in childhood?" Ugh, I hate those questions. Not all addictions are a cause of some big traumatic event. In fact, many aren't. I'm speaking from experience. I know this caller's struggle and am in a 12 step program for food. Recovery in that program is what eventually led me to Dave Ramsey. Anyway, I would advise this woman to check out food addition specialists, 12 step programs or recovery programs for food addiction in her area. It's more than just "she needs some discipline" (as I've seen written in the comments.) Addiction is more than just a lack of discipline.

No, not all those with food issues have trauma, but many do.

@@arthrodea Nothing to be horrified about. It's called covering your bases and making sure nothing is missing from the evaluation. If you want to get spiritual, the Bible talks about generational curses being allowed to propagate across multiple generations. You commonly hear that certain behaviors or conditions "runs in the family" (something Dr. John had asked). Generational curses can be broken, but you have to surrender (another word Dr. John used in the video) that curse to God and let Him free you from it. It all starts from there, but you have to recognize which you are dealing with first. Not all issues are generational curses, but it's good practice to be aware of where issues may be coming from.

Destroy your debit card, and remove the card from all of takeaway places, have a prepaid card and keep the balance low. If you have to drive, fill up petrol as much as possible. If need to top ppc up, use telephone banking. Do your shopping online and don’t put unhealthy treats in basket. Have meals which are quick and relatively healthy. Put salad on the plate first. As a treat have a smoothie, I have bananas, blueberries, cacao, chia seeds, flax seeds, molasses, almond butter, almond milk, sea moss, frozen spinach and peas blended up when I have a sweet craving. After two weeks healthy eating your taste buds change and it will be easier. If you go into work, take some bananas, oranges, grapes to eat. When people wanna do something, they find a way, when they don’t, they find an excuse.

I have a sugar addiction and understand fully what she's going through. The only thing that can curb my craving is more protein and quality fat (coconut oil, avocado oil and olive oil). So many foods are out there sabotaging your efforts and making it harder than it has to be. The food industry has found the chemicals that will make you eat more of the things you don't want but can't stop eating. It's not all in your head or your emotions, it's also a body response to hormonal (insulin usually) imbalance. It takes looking into different information than what's been given for 30 plus years. Most of this information is outdated (eat less exercise more is one of them). If you choose to make a change, my advice is to believe you can and don't beat yourself up for mistakes now and in the future.

"So supportive" sounds to me like "he's a great enabler." That said, she's ultimately responsible as no one is forcing the food down her throat.

Candy is okay to have, unless there's some medical reason to not have it. What's different though is WHY she's addicted, and often times, food is not the answer. Food is just the coping skill.

God is really helping me thru Celebrate Recovery with food addiction and other difficulties. I would highly encourage anyone struggling with any kind of addiction, negative habit, or struggle to find a local meeting. Taking strictly cash to the grocery store also helps me with making the right choice in those difficult moments because if i choose $3 candy, that is a gallon of milk I'm not able to get. But there is a line item in my grocery budget for snacks, and that frees me up to get snacks without contributing to shame or guilt.
