I passed on "Ragged Glory" back in 1990, but now it's one of my favorite albums from the '90's. "Freedom" is great as well. I think this set would have been even better if it only concentrated on his studio albums. "Freedom", "Ragged Glory", "Harvest Moon", "Sleeps With Angels" and the "Mirror Ball" E.P. would have made a great box set.
Yes a much anticipated release this ORS Box set. Originals are rare & expensive in NM condition. So happy they expanded the albums to give music room to breathe. I have an original of Freedom 1 disc which does sound amazing. Here we have 2 discs,therefore it’s an improvement on the original. But it is close & the original holds a charm of its own. Ragged Glory & Weld are the standouts on this box for me.These new reissues sound glorious.Arc never had a vinyl release a cool addition for sure. So happy with the box ,sounds amazing rare 90s titles ,providing great value also. Michael thanks for sharing 😎

Disappointed in the sleeves in jackets. Hate paper sleeves, and non Gatefold jackets stuffed with 3lps. Great sounding though... Weld is absolutely amazing.
Very nice review. I’m really only interested in Arc. And maybe Ragged Glory. Weld is my favorite NY live album and I need Arc to complete my set. And I saw NY many times during this period. Once with Sonic Youth opening. Danke.

Yes, often problems with seam splits in these ORS box sets; I was at Amoeba in SF buying the set before this one; I tried all three sets they had (numbered between 0005 and 0010) and all had serious splits to the covers. Amoeba refunded all three; helpful to me, but frustrated with the distributor who doesn’t take any responsibility for these damages…🤔
I also had terrible seam splits with a previous Neil ORS box set (the one with Rust Never Sleeps etc). Not the end of the world but interesting to learn that it is a widespread issue. I think the box is too big and that allows the records too much movement in transit.

I just counted and I have 52 Neil Young albums, including double LPs, triple LPs, boxsets. So you could say I am a fan. Do I want another Neil Young Boxset? If it was just the original LPs in their original format, no, but the extended versions of these four albums, maybe yes! I just have to check out the big variance in prices.
Interesting review! I have some high Rez digital releases but I haven’t got into Neil on vinyl yet, it’s a little bit intimidating, but I will eventually pick up some titles I really want to have. Great to hear when an artist goes all out in the quality of their release. Thanks for sharing, as always!
Thanks, Michael. I will get this set as I know and love these albums. I have both “Freedom” and “Ragged Glory” OG vinyl. OG “Freedom” sounds very good but OG “Ragged Glory” does not sound very good. I attribute this to the fact that this very long album was packed onto a single LP. I think George also mentioned this on the stream. This new multi-LP reissue is very exciting! Cheers.
As far as I recall, Arc was a cd only issue back in the days. Correct me if I am wrong. A bunch of noise, I more like his Dead man soundtrack. As I own the Ragged Glory and Weld as German 1st press, the only reason would be Freedom to get the box set. Hoping for a single lp release. Cheers Klaus
One more point - Freedom, Weld and ARC are mastered from 16/44 digital (CD quality). This is the same as Eldorado in the previous box. Many of the tracks on Freedom were recorded originally to analogue tape - so it is surprising that more effort was not made to construct as much of that album from to original master sources.
I have just bought this and it is well worth the money, great soundstage but not sure the neighbours appreciate some of the feedback!😂 I also have the four album `Way Down in the Rust Bucket`, also a fantastic recording, which was mastered from the original analogue tapes. Essential in my opinion and not to expensive.
I had an original vinyl pressing of Freedom when it came out (it was free because an office worker was disposing of records he didn’t want). But it was unplayable on my turntable because it was 60 minutes of music jammed onto two sides, so my stylus kept skipping. This explains why this new release puts this album on two discs.
I debated this one, then ultimately ordered it. The outer box was smashed a little and the platters were warped and/or scuffed. Shameful. I’ve ordered a replacement. If that is also damaged, I’m going back to giving most of my money to Analogue Productions exclusively.
I did get an OG of Ragged Glory a few months back and then he announced this box set. (I just ordered it yesterday.) I had em all on CD back in the nineties, I know i have repented, I am super stoked. I saw him twice during this period, with Crazy Horse and that big weld/Arc sound and then Harvest Moon. Complete opposites but both awesome. I saw him twice last month.
That is quite a nice boxset Michael....I bought all of these albums at the time of release on compact disc...I still have FREEDOM and RAGGED GLORY.....the other 2 don"t bear repeated listens IMO

Chrome Dreams came out subsequent to this video and - it is absolutely wonderful. An extraordinary collection of songs that, if it had been released at the time (1977), would surely be considered one of Neil's greatest. Incidentally, I have single LP OGs of both Freedom and Ragged Glory - and they sound pretty good. The new editions are far better.
You mean Chrome Dreams. I have a bootleg of it. It is his most famous "lost album." Was supposed to be released in 1977, I believe, but he yanked it at the last minute.
What a waste of 9 minutes on the internet. No real insight into the quality or differences of the new master. No existing knowledge or research into the titles. Zero knowledge of NY. Chrome Glory? Glory Chrome? WTAF. Pur-leeease. If you want our clicks for $$$, at least do us the courtesy of having a release schedule in front of you. Unsubstantiated platitudes alone don't deserve our time. Although, "One of the most exciting hype stickers in my collection," did make me giggle. Uncontrollably.

I received my box set a few days ago. Its fantastic and can't wait for more from Neil Young.
This is an amazing sounding box set! And the quietest vinyl I have heard outside of a MOFI or UHQR pressing.
€144 plus shipping is a great price, I saw it in a local shop... €235! Crazy price!
I just got a special 70s edition of Harvest with a cream colored vinyl inside, pulling the vinyl out of the cardboard is a joy in itself :)

Does any hard core NY fan know if “Sleeps With Angels” will be in the next archive box set release? I had it on cd back in the 90s - a haunting album.
I picked this up a couple weeks ago, I’m about a third of the way through listening to it. Very quiet, very flat so far. I’m glad I ponied up for it.
