@Jorge, awesome man, I've been very happy with mine. My buddy in the video and I were on a trail a couple weeks ago and we both got saved by our winches, best investment made so far.
Speed isnt everything. I wonder if the slower Warn speed means lower gear ratio and thus greater pulling capacity? One way to find out is to look up the specs for each model and check the motor power. If they have equal HP ratings then the warn should have more pulling power. Otherwise well done smittybuilt!
smittybilt- Gear Ratio: 218:1 Motor: 6.6hp Series Wound warn- Gear Ratio: 218:1 but warn does not list their motor hp rating so, if they have the same gear ratio, does that mean the warn has a stronger motor (but slower motor).?.
I own a smitty and I own an older Warn I would have used the Warn but the new bumper on my new jeep didn't have a large enough opening to handle the Warn. They both are 12000lb but the Warn held a 135 feet of cable while the smitty held 90 feet. I hear some good and some bad about smitty so I hope it works when it's needed.
Slower is better if the gear ratio is higher. I have a 410:1 ratio for a 17500 lbs winch and a 5hp motor. So I use less power, have higher capacity, and it is slower. But who should be in a hurry dealing with heavy machinery…? That is not smart.
speed (over flat ground no less) is about the least important thing on a winch. it is the mechanicals or worse (and more likely) electronics failing that is much more likely and problematic. the smittybuilt you used is rated 67, but the warne is 68. there is a huge difference there in electronics protection from both immersion and just rain. smittybuilt will charge you up to $200 for part to replace electronics whereas even the chinese built low end warne versions are 68 waterproofing and replacement parts are not rape. Look I am not against Smitty per se, but you need to consider those values.
Wait...per 4wp parts website ...who happens to now own SB, the waterproof rating is IP68 for the 98510 x20 10k# winch that he used. Where did you find 67 rating? I am no fan boy for either...strictly here for research as a potential buyer.
I've got an older warn and it's not water proof. I had to take it apart and clean, lube and put it back together. Plus it's much bigger then the same size smitty. Both are 12000lb. Just hope the smitty will hold up over the years like the warn did but the smitty is suppose to be water proof. We'll see!
Your vehicle would be lighter than that. You added total weight of vehicle plus bumper weight. You need to the subtract the weight of the stock bumper from your vehicle (and his).
stock jk bumper is 27 lbs, trivial. the difference between syntheric and steel line is much much more. when I replaced my steel cable and fairlead with synthetic and alum hawse I reduced winch weight by 34 lbs
I would say negligible. I also didn't take into account he weighs more than I do by 10lbs, I also didn't take into account the 100+lbs of tools, recovery gear, fluids, etc I carry with me when we head out for some fun. All rough estimates for hopefully a slightly entertaining video, hope you enjoyed and thanks for watching.
@@thetopher1126 One should also consider while that extra stuff is trivial inside, ie, loading up that stuff in the main part of the vehicle is much less harmful to braking, steering performance, highway safety than sticking it out front. So you have considerations such as a) do you have it there always, like a steel cable winch and steel bumper which most people don't remove, and b) is it sticking out front or back and therefore leveraged and well understood to be more harmful to highway handling and braking. So if you stick a 150lb steel bumper, and 100lbs of winch out front, you are 220 lbs more and that weight is leveraged well forward of the front axle. That will definitely affect handling and braking. It will be not be much of a consideration winching
Nicole, you're welcome, glad it was helpful. You certainly can't go wrong with either winch. I've had mine on for almost 2 years and have used it 3x now. The true test is, does it work when you need it. This was fun to do, look out for more. Good luck!
Great video! The race was hilarious! I''ll take SB over Warn for 1/3 the price. With that big of a price difference warn should be significantly better in all aspects.
Great honest down to earth fun video guys 😂
if the lines weren't out same lenth one winch will pull faster because the spool is bigger and less revolutions
The more on the spool, the less force the winch will put out
I'm getting the gen 2 smittybilt 9500 winch for my truck. I will use it mainly on the gin pole setup.

Warn winches are hard to beat. Most all other brands don't last long. See how hot the motor got after use. Just bought a evo 10 .
What is your relative alternator output and Battery cold cranking amps that will make a big difference
99% of offraod guys never upgrade to an actual high output alternator..
Which winch comes with Limited lifetime warranty for mechanical parts and 7 years on the electrical?
Warn
Both

The evo motor is a bit of a dog. Loses pull strength down to ~6.5k on 4th wrap where the x20 drops to ~8k on those 10k winches.
Actually it is if you're in a race

The warn was slower because of the gear ratio. But pulling the jeeps up a steep hill the warn would of been faster.
Should have a good idea what the vehicle weighs before buying the winch right?
Which one had which winch?
literally can see the smitty in the video... smh

Were both cars running?
Hey Kyle, yeah, both rigs were running! Thanks for the question.

This video made my decision on what winch to buy. Thanks!!

what models were they?

they are literally 50 dollars apart lol
Lol...not even close....warn is the most expensive out there.
Which one did you have?
I had the Smittybilt
You didn't factor in the drivers' weight.
Haha, that I did not!
So a chinese winch vs a chinese winch. Not much of a comparison really.
