No, Norm, it was not initially reasonable to assume people had been killed in a firefight. I thought this man claims he has studied the issue for decades? How in the world would he think that was the obvious conclusion? Does he just never listen to what Hamas says?
That’s a good point, since when has Hamas excelled at direct combat with the IDF? Assuming those were all soldiers dead in firefights is a bit daft, especially when he should know many soldiers were on holiday and the borders had less security than normal.
Edit: I just realized his most compelling framing of the attack was that they were “escaping” their concentration camp but does he not know many of the combatants were killed as they attempted to go back across the border into Gaza. Why were they actively trying to go back to their “prison”??

He is so evil, honestly, and I am not saying that just because of his morally bankrupt beliefs about Hamas and Oct. 7th. I am saying this also because of what he teaches his students. I knew who Finkelstein was before Oct. 7th, but I had never followed his work or teachings. After he started popping up a lot, I started to look more into him. What I found was extremely disturbing. He actually teaches young people that "80 percent of them have no future" and this is only in relation to the economy. According to him they also have to deal with the climate catastrophe and the threat of nuclear annihilation. I cannot believe that he is so ignorant that he actually believes that economic troubles would mean that these students would "have no future." That is not the story that history tells us. You have to be in complete famine in order for that to be true and we are no where near that kind of threat. It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy. These students will act as if they have no future. They will make decisions that will harm their future prospects. It's just evil to teach them this. No wonder so many activists act like they are insane. They have men and women like Finkelstein teaching them that there's nothing for them in the future. They don't even have one.

I saw this segment when it came out (along with Douglas Murray's priceless response both before and after) and I thought the EXACT SAME THING about Norm not knowing the extent of what went down. Before people knew the extent or severity of Oct 7, before news outlets were properly covering it, the first things the world saw were the horrific videos and images. There is no way to morally justify this, even for the diehard Palestine supporters. And just because the number of confirmed deletions increase does not mean they are fresh bodies, it is merely the number CONFIRMED which is CERTAIN to increase over the following days as the investigation is conducted.

I've seen the same phrase/sentiment being said a lot, but to be honest, I've never seen a clip of him being an irrational actor.

2. Palestinians were peaceably minding their own business up until the early 20th century. After WW1 and Sykes-Picot, there was some Palestinian resistance to the British occupation of their land. Pursuant to Balfour's 1917 promise to Zionist activists, following to WW2 the British then offloaded their occupation of the territory to the incoming Zionist colonialists, who massively escalated the violence against the land's people. This conflict has persisted in varying degrees of intensity ever since, and it was not the native inhabitants who instigated anything.

More saliently, though: your original comment's point was that the Israeli blockade of Gaza not preventing any & all food from entering Gaza (100% by third parties mind you, Israel's only involvement was *not* seizing/destroying what relief agencies supplied) in & of itself disproved the characterisation of Gaza as a concentration camp.
In light of the insurmountable evidence that Israeli extremist activists have been actively co-ordinating to block virtually all food from crossing the border - including surrounding trucks and gleefully destroying their cargo, while children on the other side of that border are quite literally dying of starvation - your claim that all this abundant food the people in Gaza enjoy disproves the true nature of Israel's, would seem to collapse under the weight of its own absurdity.

You can see the deceit around the elections. Mahmoud Abbas requested polling booths in Jerusalem, the capital Palestinians want for their state. Of course Israel said no, Mosab Hassan Yousef talks about how requests are always unreasonable to a peaceful co-existence, so it looks like Israel is controlling the political process in the Palestinian Territories. Abbas called the elections off after the refusal of booths in Jerusalem, which could very well have been a cover for his waning popularity and risking replacement through the democratic process. I’m aware of expansion issues that Israel should be honest and transparent about - for a balanced view, but Finkelstein’s narrative is deeply deceptive.
Under international law, Palestinians are entitled to:
1- A sovereign independent state under the 1967 borders including East Jerusalem (this is also based on binding security council decision Israel has agreed to)
2- Removal of all illegal settlers (whose transfer into occupied territories is a war crime. Ukraine is also demanding the removal of all Russian settlers in occupied Ukranian territories)
3- Return of Palestinian refugees to their land of origin in the green line inside Israel
Palestinians have been compromising on their entitled rights under international law for peace.
What has Israel compromised?
'We will stop further annexation through illegal settlements, but keep everything we blundered, and only allow you to be 'an entity which is less than a state' (Rabin quote), and we will control all your borders'.
How is that any different from the status quo?

The Japanese internment camps (meaning the camps for interning Japanese in America, not the ones that the Japanese set up) did that. Of course, when people use the term "concentration camp" they clearly want to evoke Nazi concentration camps. Is there a term for when someone technically uses a term correctly, but in a way that is clearly intended to be misunderstood? Not that the term concentration camp is even accurate for Gaza, even if you actually do want to compare it to relatively humane ones like the Japanese internment camps.

The Americans didn't want to genocide them and it could have been done in a humane way. However in a nazi concentration camp the goal was to kill the people they didn't like. I just have to say that a piece of the puzzle that is missing here is that Israel apparently *funded* and *encouraged* the growth of Hamas, precisely for the reason of keeping the Palestinians down and divided. Mehdi Hasan did a piece on this a few years ago.
Also, you guys have a very strict interpretation of what a concentration camp is.
Israel legitimized Hamas in the same way that Joe Biden stated that if an Israel didn't exist "one would have to be invented to protect American assets" (may not 100% be verbatim, you can easily find the quote on YT if you look him up in the 90s). It's the same old middle eastern tale every single time, you'd think people would see through that.
