The MS-DOS port of this game was actually pretty good. It was controlled entirely with the numeric keypad, which was a bit odd, but once you got past that it was a quality port. Thankfully by this point developers were finally moving past EGA graphics and PC Speaker sound and Golden Axe had fairly good-looking 256-colour VGA graphics and AdLib/Soundblaster sound. I can't remember if it had a 2-player mode, though.
I never understood why the Sega CD version didn't include the voice samples from the arcade... something about that "oooooh gaaaaaaahhd" death scream always freaked me out a little as a kid, and then the Sega CD gets this stupid "ow!" when they die. The only redeeming point of the CD version is that since the music is redbook, the FM sound effects don't cut into the music channels, something even the arcade game suffered from. They also could've put back in the missing frames of animation using the extra RAM of the SCD in the way Mortal Kombat did (say what you will, but MK on the Sega CD looked noticeable better than the Genesis version).
You do the magic pressing a key on the keyboard on Amiga Version.. if I remember correctly, left Amiga for ply1 and Right Amiga for ply2. The WHDLOAD version fixes this adding supports for button 2 to use magic. IMO The Amiga version is pretty good. Not Mega-Drive level good (as some Amiga fanboys usually say), but pretty good.

@@RetroCore I've seen people say it was taken out as Sega originally planned to put 10 games on the disc, others suggest It might have to do with the Sega-CD having to load all of the players' graphics into the VRAM, since it can't directly stream them from the cartridge... Has there ever been a definite answer?
Unrelated - but the Golden Axe racetrack in Sonic racing Transformed kicks arse. Close to best track in the game (maybe bested by the Curien Mansion one). The music is a brilliant update of the original Golden Axe music. There was a Golden Axe themed fighting game on the Saturn that looked like fun. Anyone know what it was actually like?
I knew the arcade version well and always thought the MD port was kinda disappointing... this video really puts things in perspective though. It turns out MD actually had the best GA port out there!
I agree, compared to the Arcade version, the Mega Drive port is watered down but like you said, it's a million times better than the other available options.
I can remember back in the day in 1989 when I got this for my imported Megadrive. Later on my Amiga owning friend got it for his system and always swore blind how much better it was on the Amiga! He was always secretly jealous of the games on the MD!
So, I played the Amiga port. Aside from the awkward jumping, I quite enjoyed it. Probably because I couldn't accidentally cast spells at inopportune times.
I miss the PC MS-DOS version in the video. Since you are relying on emulation for recording most of these versions, you could have covered that one through DOSBox. Otherwise, good comparison.
It does actually say at the beginning of the video that there is a DOS version as well as other emulated versions. DOS box when I tried it was a real pain in the arse. I'm going to see if I can find a front end for it to make life a little easier.
Yakumo1975 Yeah, I know. But I mean, it could have been included in the video aswell. Have you tried DOSBox? It's as reliable for any modern PC as any other console/computer emulator is.
Albert Wesker I'll have a look in to it. To be honest, emulators for the ST, Amiga, C64 and Spectrum are a real pain in the arse I find when it comes to setting up joypads.
Eek, the pitches are slightly off in the Wonderswan port... did that thing not have a hardware-level frequency table like most systems? Even the Intellivision didn't have pitch problems like that!
Someone else already mentioned The Revenge of Death Adder, to which that game deserved a port. I also brought it up in your Golden Axe: The Duel video a few years ago, but I'll re-iterate that Sega should've done so... If Sega and M2 were able to retrieve the once-shelved English version of Wonder Boy in Monster Lair, why not do something about Death Adder?
The Revenge of Death Adder really should have came out on the saturn rather than the crappy Golden Axe the Duel. But since Golden Axe the Duel arcade was running on the STV board (basically an arcade version of the Saturn) it was very easy to port. Sega and M2 could have even added it to the Xbox 360 Sega Golden Axe collection that came out this year.
Never knew there was a Sega CD version! Didn't really miss much I guess. The PC Engine port is so laughable...guess I'll give a go to see the cutscenes. Back in the 90s I managed to play the MS-Dos and Amiga versions.
Yeah, the Mega Cd port is on the Sega Classics disc that came with the system in Europe, Japan and I'm pretty sure in the US too. It's pretty sad though as it's one player only! But hey, at least it's better than the mess on the PC Engine.
Ah, that would explain why I couldn't do it. These days using a keyboard and controller combination is so inconvenient since we no longer really sit on top of the computer when playing these days.
Very old video, but actuelly the Amiga version is not that crap, its playable and fun on its own. yes its cant become near the console version at all.... And its one of the game, that is just better on a real Amiga, not on a emulator (due magic is bind to the Amiga keys and such, due 2 player coop, so hence you could not use spacebar this time). I guess compared to other games of its type on the Amiga its not that bad but playing but after playing the Mega Drive version was pretty painful. Still, at least it was as big of a let down as the PC Engine version. That's just sad.
Its not a bad version at all, not on pair to Mega Drive either, bit far from worst on the Amiga. But its not a version im would play on a emulator throught, due the strange mapping for the Magic, which does works nice on the real amiga throught. Some games used that key as the second key, when you have a 2 player action. But there is also as people previous said a WHDLoad, which have fixed the magic button to uses the second fire button....
Retro Core No you press the left or right "A" (Amiga logo key) - which should be mapped to F11 and F12 on WinUAE emulators or "W" (Windows logo key) AFAIR. As for the Amiga port - the best port in audio department, and quite frankly I prefer it to the megadrive on the GFX dept. for the palette used (IMO) - Playability is good enough to replicate the arcade. FUN TO PLAY all around (not a rushed st port)! The Atari got a good enough port for the machine (can't think it could do any better really)! As for the rest the Megadrive has definitely the edge, with slick controls, an extra level, and a few more options.
