Thanks!! 😊
I really enjoy these classes with a dynamic conversation, you learn so much more through a conversation that you can not learn from one single teacher.
I know, it's a completely different dynamic! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
1:20:40 that discussion about schools is really true. most schools in my place values academics more than creativity and I feel like schools should be a balance of both.
Absolutely! A good balance between the two is so important - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Oh my gosh, I just started doing thumbnails for the first time and I Can Not Stop!!!! I can't believe I used to carry all those ideas around! My head feels so much lighter now! 😂
Omg, thumbnails are a lifesaver!!! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
I'm a graphic designer and an illustrator, I spend almost 80% of my project time doing thumbnails :)
Soooo relatable, I have a sketchbook dedicated to only thumbnails, haha - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Thank you. This was so helpful. I enjoyed your Jack in the Beanstalk demo. 😂 hilarious
Congratulations Scott Gilley!! All the best for your dream career!
I think I've watched this twice over the last year. It's really good.
We're honored you think so! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Heres my process for thumbnailing: brainstorm thumbnails(rly rough, can be anything surrounding the general vibe I want), selection amd iteration(selecting the best of stage 1 and playing with alternative versions), refined sketch(refining the best iteration for clarity, adding simple color, and adding some minor detail only just beyond big shapes/elements, then I move on to the final piece after any iterations of different stages, sometimes I restart that process, sometimes a completely new idea does a sidewinder to me and I go with that instead
👍👍👍 I enjoyed getting to SEE how you both made your thumbnails.
It's such an important step! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
I know this isnt the point, but i like the one with jack with the beans reflected in his eyes --it adds a lot of pressure! I like it! Its kinda scary
Wow. Lecture and demo in one video!
Whoop whoop! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Informative and helpful...
Glad you think so!- Mia Rozear, Art Prof Share
@@artprof The Site is Super! I have been learning about Gelli Plates and how not to be so precious with the process.
You both make drawing look so easy.
Have you seen Clara's really ugly messy sketchbooks? She struggles too! 😆

@@artprof 😅🤣
To illustrate it without the beans ...Jack hands in pocket - walking back to his sister in the distance ...looking over his shoulder at the old dude and cow walking away..a concerned look on his face like maybe he's questioning his decision
Thanks for sharing your awesome vids 💜
Thanks for watching! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
Great yes i just started doing “thumbnail’s” as i realized erasing the sketch was tiring the paper in my case I’ve just started to experiment with watercolour ! And i am really excited at the idea of trying acrylic or oil all such fun & satisfying 😃 Love listing to your videos
Thumbnails really change the game when you put them into practice-- I had the same revelation, and saved so much nice paper in the process! Thanks for watching :D - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Watching this for class. Instead of doing jack and the bean stalk, I'm doing thumbnail sketches of the Mexican restaurant my character works at.
That's so awesome! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
I could afford to do more thumbnails-I do like them! My problem is when I like their looseness more than the final piece…😅
Thumbnails come in many level of detail. It's up to the arist to decide how much they want to make.
Very true! I think it all depends on what is most helpful for each artist :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Absolutely excellent exploration of thumbnails, their importance, and why and how to make them. I learned a lot!
I should use a view finder more often.
I should too, probably - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I think thumbnails can be very fascinating - but my best work normallydoes not come from thumbnails - my way of opening into the creative process is jumping from deciding one or two colors and then a continue like a dance or jazz improvisation from their. Each piece of art is like a lucid dreaming and sometimes like a conversation with elements that call you.
That's another perfectly okay way to create a piece! I know tons of artists who prefer to improvise and see how the piece creates itself, instead of planning beforehand :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
one thing i think is a good bridge between thumbnails and the final piece is doing studies of my subject matter, especially if im drawing something im not experienced in. for example, im planning a big piece that includes angel wings, so i do studies of birds to help understand the structure and the way wings work.
That's such a great method of working! Plus, then you have tons of cool drawings of wings to look back on :) - Mia, Art Prof Staff
You guys are hilarious “sperm beans” 😆 I was kind of thinking the same thing but I just thought I was crazy! Lol!
Haha we are all crazy! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
I do my thumbnails at down times; waiting for water to boil, sitting in front of youtube.... they take a minute or two. By the time i get art-time i already know what I'm doing. I usually have 3-4 project ideas going at a time so its an easy rotation.
Thumbnails are addictive - once you start working based on thumbnails - go into the final piece with the composition already figured out - you cannot stop! :D
Seriously!! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I always do thumb nails, especially when I plan to draw or paint a size I am not use too.
I studied Graphic Design in college and it's ALL about the thumbnails!! I don't get how people try to ANYTHING by just jumping onto the computer and playing around. I've tried that and ended up going back and making thumbnails so I could move forward and not feel lost. Imagine a house builder trying to build you a house with NO house plans. That could end up being a very wonky house.
I am such a thumbnail person-- I have to have a guideline or else I'll get SO overwhelmed! Or I'll be nearly done with a drawing and have a better idea than the first. I find it so helpful to think of a lot of designs first, and then choose my favorite :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Hello. I draw cartoon characters ,mostly animal personification. When I draw I tend to make the size of the head a little to big causing the body to be to big therefor, leaving little room for everything else in my composition. Usually to fix this I change to a bigger sheet of paper or shrink my character down on a copier. I will try thumbnails but, Any tips on how to fix this besides thumbnails.
I would recommend doing a TON of character gesture drawings! The more comfortable you are with your character, the easier proportions will be :) We have a few videos that might help, feel free to check this one out: ua-cam.com/video/P0GMNe3Ici8/v-deo.html - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
We were taught to do thumbnails to plan out the thinking and design process. All colleges ask to see your thinking process to explain it. I do storyboards first.
Yup, storyboards definitely count as thumbnailing! -Lauryn Welch, Art Prof Teaching Artist
Oh em gee. They are so right. The first one is the most boring. Good thing I didn't marry my first love. Hahaha.
56:55 I do that. Sometimes if I like the frame/view/scene, I pause the movie/series episode just to have a good look , study and admire it. My sister is used to me doing that all the time during movie night/series marathon. I recommend Lucifer. Every frame is a work of art, I mean, besides the beautiful casts. Haha.
That's such a great exercise! I might try that later haha - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
@@artprof Yay!
I made it to 13 minutes before I decided I'm glad I never went to art school and god I would hate to take their classes.
HAHA, it's rough out there for sure - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
I did the hand and the cow with a beanbag
When was the story originally writen. Electronics is pushing it some what, I think anyway.
Lol prof lieu if hugh jackman is in front of you asking for marriage, will u still consider other options?
Idk Neil, depends on whether Fassy got a divorce from Alicia Vikander....🤣🤣🤣 -Prof Lieu
Jackman over Fassbender, always!!
I went to the most booooooooring Advanced Arts course the other day and cannot bare to stick it out . I am so used to the laughing, fun and joy you people exude. I can’t do serious art sessions …..art and creation should be fun. English academic types are so precious and high brow over the arts as if no-one can do it until we have been to a ‘proper’ diploma, raised our game…..ugh…..£1,000 for a booooooorng day class which is not as fun and informative as your channel. I hate grids !!!
Yes, the cost and language used in art academia is soooo inaccessible! -Lauryn Welch, Art Prof Teaching Artist
