  • Planning a color scheme for an artwork is an effective way to achieve visual cohesion and intent in your artwork. Color schemes are an effective way of establishing a mood in a painting, as well as creating visual contrast and textures. There are many ways to collect ideas for color schemes and apply them to your creative process. Art Prof Clara Lieu and Teaching Artist Lauryn Welch lead this discussion.

    I would like to say thank you! I've found out about Artprof for a week while I was trying to learn about gouache. Since then, whenever I study, I put your videos in the background because your speeches or vibes help me focus. I come back to some videos because I find them useful for me. There are too many videos on UA-cam teaching tips and tricks that overwhelm me. In contrast, your content gives me so much trust that I can actually learn something fundamental. And I couldn't be more grateful! Please keep up your amazing works!

    The "adding colors is like eating potato chips" analogy is perfect haha. I find I make much better pieces if I limit my color palette from the start. Otherwise having too many colors can distract from the subject of the artwork.

    • @artprof
      @artprof  Рік тому +2

      Totally, each color added also brings with it all of its context, emotions, and history, it can be so hard to wrangle them all into something cohesive when you have so many! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

    I create a colour palette by taking an existing image and using crystallise filter in photoshop, set to around 60-80 for cell size (depending on the image complexity) and it gives an excellent range of colours to work with

    Yes, speaking of light, can you do a video about lights and lamps you recommend for lighting the area of the house where you work. I've been given the dining room table as a studio and am in the process of trying to figure out if the lighting is right.

    Thank you for all of your suggestions on where to find color combos. As a watercolor enthusiast understanding color is so important because of the transparency of the medium. It hides nothing so overworking a painting happens in the blink of an eye.

    For me its very much about limitation and intensifying subtle differences of warm-cold and multivaried tones of one or two colors creating speciel harmonies - and by the way I love desaturated paintings but yet also contrasts of all kinds soft-hard, transparent- opaqueness,

    Loved this! Such a fresh approach to colour palettes! I take away the idea of really noticing examples of colour schemes from my everyday life, from packaging to film stills to postcards. Am curious if the video about light and colour is available to continues my learning! Excited to move forward on a project working from only 5 colours! Time to select! Thanks for the awesome examples from a variety of different sources! Inspiring!

    When working with coloured pencils, I like to put down a base of the colour I think fits that part of the drawing and then go over it with other colours to add volume, hints of light, variations in colour to make it more realistic, etc. I basically work it like a graphite drawing. You never want to only have one layer of colour when working with coloured pencils and it's best if you let your colours mix

    Neutral colors are like the introverted friends who enhance the conversation and make the extroverted saturated colors pop. And we underrate the introverted friends/neutrals because they seem quieter.

    I'm just 4 mins in and I have to hit pause to comment. Finding out there are people who think color is an add-on is just bizarre to me? I've worked with art directors from small video and print companies before (not as an artist), and the palette is part of the presentation/proposal to the client. In addition to that, using color to draw out a certain mood or theme is part of cinematography and, in some occasions, writing.
