Handy hint for cow control - they are easily hypnotised by the sound of the mouth organ/harmonica. I find them particularly keen on the slow movement from the New World Symphony and Swing Low Sweet Chariot - they wander to within a few metres of you - like families around a street performer - and stand there, entranced.

I cannot reiterate enough of what you say - draw, everyday, no matter what. I tell this to my own students all the time. It's like an athlete at practice. The more you practice, the stronger that muscle memory becomes. It takes time, but line quality, shape building, tonal control, observational skill, etc. all becomes better AND becomes more instinctive. Andrew is speaking the truth folks!

Love your cows Andrew!! I don’t normally sketch because I have such a small house, it means that I have to drag so much out every time I want to draw. BUT! Starting tomorrow once I have figured out what I need to move around in order to get into sketching I will get into it more. Thanks again for the lesson. NG!

Andrew, LOVE your drawings!! I think artists get hung up sometimes (I fall into the trap too) of valuing one medium over another, to the point that all the mediums I enjoy become just a step in the process of reaching the One medium, rather than being a joy in themselves. Your drawings could be sold as artwork themselves, and maybe consider that! Why should we be only this medium artist or only that medium artist. I think it makes you that much more fascinating as an artist, that you have such a talent in multiple mediums. You definitely shouldn’t rule out your drawings as an important part of your body of work…just sayin’ I like da Vinci’s paintings, but I LOVE his drawings. Just discovered your Endeavor series and plan to continue following and being inspired to pick up my daily practice commitment. Thank you!

Hugely inspiring as ever! After a 40 year career in graphic design, I now sell archival watercolour prints from my Etsy shop and watching your video, prompted me to embark on a tonal study for my next painting. Not pencil on this occasion but a set of grey Copic markers that I use to simplify the values before painting. Although drawing is in my blood, that constant practice is necessary to prevent the rust taking hold!

I like the different thumbnail style compositions of a scene. In this way we get the options of work..
. My brother started taking painting classes at a tender age. Now he is 28 years old. And they are doing their art.
But he still says that every painting teaches me something different.
I got interested in painting after watching my brother. I love nature and painting keeps me lost in nature. I mostly learn painting from my brother. And sometimes I go to different workshops. We do photography ,,, and painting mostly in the same studio. And since I started watching your videos, I have been watching them often. And we have seen the work of the mill

The importance of sketching is so crucial to understanding your subjects. I don't get to do as much sketching before painting, as I would like. I would love to know how to do that when it's a deadline commission, with no time to work on good preliminary sketches. But when I'm working on a piece that I want to do as a premier painting from my soul, I find that i can sketch more, and understand the subject better. My journey doesn't end there... I wind up putting my ideas into my Krita program, and flesh out a full color image, adding elements to that image for composition and detail.
I love sketching though. There is a visceral feeling I get from having the graphite touch the paper. Each line is important, even if its just a construction line. I don't seem to have the knack of making a sketch look like it's been drawn with deliberate strokes as I see in your sketches. I do like how just your thumbnails look like near finished drawings.
As for your 4am sketch time... I commend you! I can only imagine being up at that time, having a cup of coffee, and sketching to my heart's content! You do inspire!

Hi Andrew. Thinking about the drawing process. Small achievable goals, drawing for a spell when the need is there, sketching when it supports another form of art making or simply drawing for fun. To me you succeed because you strive to better yourself, you desire more within your art and I'm sure that you attain more for your soul when I consider how meaningful you express what the drawing process is for you. Like a horse race, there is a time to draw and a time to paint and at times one requires attention over the other. I have followed the ideas presented in sketch endeavour for a while now and commend you for the importance you place on it-it has huge value for the artist. When at times you considered that you fell short of your goal of consistency, you have in fact still succeeded as even in your paintings; at the beginning stage you have drawn, even drawing with paint as the first construction lines are mapped out and the knowledge you gained from sketch endeavour; working out composition to the understanding of your subject has transposed to the painting process. You have sketched everyday even if it is the thoughts you carried in your mind as you have contemplated your work. Above all this it is your humble attitude to learning which I sense has been the greatest gift for you and why you teach with such clarity.

You make some amazing paintings and drawings. It's funny you're trying to push yourself to draw every day. About a month ago, I started doing just that. I've missed a couple days here and there. Going live for a drawing session is definitely a good way to keep someone honest. Also, I'm now following you on Instagram. Just want to say how much I appreciate your videos and all the amazing art you create. I always think of the quote from Dead Poet Society: "We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."
Art fits more than one of those categories we stay alive for.

Hello Andrew. This daily sketching is a great insight into how another artist thinks whilst working, rather than a general commentary on materials and the intentions in a piece. You do a lot of thumbnails, which is rougher, more undisciplined work than studies or paintings. In a professional setting I've been rushing this and all the revisions mean that I do a lot of bad drawing that drags my overall skill down. How do you keep these shortcuts from becoming bad habits?
Thank you for showing us what you think about when you draw. It gives a direction to personal study.

I think i'll take that "it doesn't matter what your drawing as long as your drawing" to heart. I've been practicing drawing real people and started collecting elves and fawn cosplay images since I like fantasy stuff too, unfortunately I can only use photos at the moment but I still try to practice still life drawing and eventually plan to do my own little cast drawing subjects. I love this but man does it burn me out after a week or two, it's just too much nuanced details like perspective in a particular body part or thing that you have to pay attention to and it gets frustrating when a picture doesn't turn out right even when I know what to look at. Luckily my interest for drawing isn't just for those things and I want to be able to draw my own anime characters too so I've been practicing that style along with the other stuff, I find that it's a great reprieve for when I get burned out on the other stuff and I think i'll make that my non negotiable time persist through drawing even when I'm fatigued.

I used to do value studies using pencil and gesso. I would start with a premium Strathmore bristol, maybe 180 lb cold press I believe, and do a 2H sketch, then seal it with a wash of gesso, then work over it again. Each time, the darker areas of the drawing get pushed back into lighter tones, which makes room for more definition and the 2H goes on that much darker each time, as 2H on gesso is very much darker. Some really nice things began to happen with the technique. I could vary the amount I could push each layer depending on the number of washes I put over any given area. In the final stages I used a full range of pencils, saving my "tonal best" for last!

I struggle with the showing up part to a "T" because of the blank page dilemma and the weight of my ambitions as obstacles. Even sketchbooks that are supposed to be a playground for external-visual-processing feel like a chore because we've consumed countless sketchbook videos of artists we admire that have arguably "frame worthy" "sketches" that took 20 minutes on every other page. So when stay in your lane thinking isn't enough (because comparison is the thief of joy), I've gotten around this by drawing on scraps of paper and just tape it inside my sketchbook. It's ugly as sin to flip through and more of a scrapbook as a result, but the evidence of the mileage is there. Hope someone find that strategy helpful! :c) Thank you as always Andrew for your videos

What a coincidence! I decided that for Lent this year I would do a sketch every day. I'm not religious at all but I've generally used Lent to go without sugar in coffee or similar - and this time I thought "Why not to a positive?"
I've been confining myself to my barrio in north Madrid. Not a posh barrio or historic neighbourhood at all, but a fantastically medieval-like admixture of buildings the oldest of which is barely a century. Staggering variety and visual interest. And the rawest technique possible - using only a black biro (they're pretty good but have their limitations), leaning against a lamp-post and trying to capture as much as possible, with real attention to some distant focal purpose and a very defined near-foreground to give the sense of where you are standing when you see the thing.

I sketch everyday Andrew. It's my first love in my art journey. Personally the Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black have been good to me when I sketch in pencil. There is little in the way of blooming, and a wide array of graphite densities / tones. Recently I've put aside the pencil for almost a year, and have taken to using pen only, It gets me out of my comfort zone, forcing me to be more conscious of the marks I make, since they can't be erased. This week I've been returning to pencil and have found that the use of pen has helped improve my mark making in many ways. Your sketches are inspiring to say the least. I may try sketching some cows; if I may? Thanks for your videos. I enjoy them very much.

Thanks to keep on sharing your thoughts, knowledge and time to create all this precious resources.
This is a good reminder of getting back to the basics and sticking to it as healthy habits for our art to grow.
And I take this opportunity to congratulate you on your pieces, and especially this one with the cows and natural scenes that remind me the art of Rosa Bonheur and all her studies and incredible paintings. I'm sure you know her work, but in the case you don't, I highly recommend it to you. There's been a retrospective here in Paris a few months ago, and it was an amazing experience.
Take care and keep it up Andrew 🙏🏼
    Fabrizio.

I really enjoyed very much watching the video! I was also surprised that it came to the right timing for me, because I decided (and started) two days ago to draw daily and I want to commit to this. I am looking forward to see how this will impact my development. So a big thank you for your video! :)

Thank you Andrew for taking us on your journey. I usually sketch every day but have let it slide this last week, so thanks for reminding me to sketch. I just love cows too and draw them often. Really good photos. Just love your sketches and listening to your thoughts 💛

Hi Andrew, this was a great video. I can totally relate as I am a NZ oilpainter and have challenged myself to post a drawing everyday on instagram since the start of the year. I'm noticing a huge improvement also and I'm sure the things I'm learning will have an impact on my painting. Great stuff, looking forward to more!
