Art journaling and marking making play.

- In this video , I show you how I have made an accordion style art journal out of repurposed paintings, art pages, and papers that were painted over with acrylic paints in more solid colours. I show you the bright acrylic backgrounds and how they inform my art journal and mark making play. This is such a fun and relaxing way to create art.
I show you how I choose specific colours and marks that I enjoy overtop an already dried acrylic background on each page.
In an earlier video, I show I paint over unfinished works on paper, and this is one way to use them in a new way.
I use a variety of materials but mostly the following:
98lb and 140 lb watercolour paper cut in strips.
scissors
UHU stick Magic blue
Stabilo Woody watersoluble crayons
Koi coloring brush pens
Posca paint pens, bronze medium tip, white fine tip, light grey fine tip, pink rose in medium tip.
Uniball Signo gold fine pen
Staedtler Lumocolour permanent black pen in angle tip
Supracolour II Soft pencil crayons by Caran D'ache
Derwent Inktense pencil in orange and poppy red.

I want to genuinely thank you for making this lovely video and demonstrating how you think and work
You are so welcome!
This is so fun !! Thanks for sharing Allison
Thanks for watching!
I think I will jump on this wagon too❣️. Make them, give them away - who doesn’t have thousands of painted papers❣️
thanks Allison for this wonderful video! I always learn so much from your creativity!
You are so welcome! Hello Debbie❤️
This is such a great idea! Thank you for existing ❤ You just poped-up in my suggested videos and I am SO HAPPY to have discovered you! I create realistic art and want to become more loose and creative. Watching your videos will help me a lot and I will for sure work on it. Thanks from Montreal 🤗
thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I think your background in realism will be a wonderful compliment/adjunct to picking up any of the loose intuitive style that I paint. Excited for you to explore new things!
Wow this little journal was beautiful. What a great idea. I often paint pages with left over paint which then get left as I don't know what to do with them. I know what I'll be doing this weekend. Thank you for the inspiration 😊
Oh- awesome
Have a good easter weekend. Your inspiration always hits my heart. Joy!
thankyou
Allison..... this was so fun to watch today! thank you!!!!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this! I have so many ideas now- making one with my daughter, and also would make a great gift for someone who loves to draw or write poetry.
That's a great idea! It would be a wonderful gift.
Thank you for showing me what I can do with my art supplies.
Glad you found it useful.
Amen!! ❤❤
I really enjoy your videos. This idea of making the mini accordion journals from painted over unwanted papers is a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much!
I really like this idea 💡 what a great way to use a pile of old loose paintings. I havent got many of these loosestock yet but something to keep in mind.
This is a great idea, loved watching today, thank you for inspiring us.
You are so welcome! Thanks Susan for being here with me.
Thank you Allison for all your videos and also for the title of the movie called Maudie. It’s a wonderful film and I watched it after this video :-)
Yes, "Maudie" the movie was beautifully done and it was incredible how Maud Lewis pushed through her challenges and painted such colourful joyful folk art. Very sad what she went though and how she really didn't get the recognition and respect and compassion she so deserved. Thanks for your comment Sylvie.
What a fabulous idea
I love this idea. I just got my Woodys not long ago. I want to use them on a piece but I'm not sure if it would rub off. I love nature. You are very blessed with those mountains. Thanks for showing us the many ideas for our supplies. Have a great night.😊
thankyou. enjoy the stabilo woodys !
Thank you for this, Allison - wonderful video!
You are so welcome! My mother's name is Joan. Thank you , Joan.
You are such a sweet angel Allison. I appreciate you so much! Not many artists share so much! It seems the law of “give and you shall receive” is being demonstrated by you. ❤
Oh I wanted to ask you a question: would you have purchased the neocolor 1’s if you only had the 2’s? Can you use the 2’s in the way you use the 2’s? Just not put liquid on top?
I love both the neocolour 1s and 2s. Depends what effect I’m going for- but the 1s are wax and not activated with water… so they are great to use over acrylic paint and I can seal them and varnish without the smudging… so- I do use and love both!
@@allisondawrant you’re the BEST! I have been torturing myself about it! I have just a little bit of extra $ at the moment for new supplies and I have to neocolor 2’s already and LOVE them, so I did just pull the trigger and went for it. I’m so excited. I enjoy your videos so so much. Thank you so very much for them. I cherish them. ❤️🥰
Thank you so much, I am enjoying your videos! Idea - the white page could be used to take notes and swatches so you can reference later. I don't know about you, but at times I forget what medium, method or colour I used!
Great idea! thanks for sharing.
the Stabilo woody pencils - if you don't activate them with water, will they smudge when the papers are folded up? Or do you have to use a fixative?
Great question. Yes they can be prone to smudging, and I love using "Spectrafix" as it is a non-toxic casein based fixative. When I use them like this in my art journal/or just for play, I don't worry about the smudging... Another option is to put wax or parchment paper in between the pages as a temporary measure until you get the chance to "fix" them. I also recommend doing 3 layers of Spectrafix and allow for drying time in between coats. It can leave a shimmery "spray" or "droplets" but I don't mind that depending on what I'm fixing!
What kind of paint are you mark making over?
Oh, and I don't find they smudge too much at all! They are more like a wax watersoluble crayon, not like a chalky pastel.... hope that helps!
