- In this video I paint an intuitive watercolour background on paper, and show how I like to add transparent or opaque layers overtop the dried watercolour.
I choose a card from my "Art Poetry" card deck that I'd published in Fall of 2023.
I read a page from an inspiring book by artist , Jessica Swift, titled "Radiant Rainbows".
I read a quote from the cover of "Flow" magazine.

I love this technique.
I started painting intuitively with watercolour around March last year and found that because I was so new to it all, I was naturally making blooms. I also figured that I could colour correct with watercolour over certain areas, which meant it looked a little more balanced to me, and unintentionally, i discovered that I had some depth to the image it produced. Very similar to the two layers you have produced in this, with the taped borders.
I haven't been able to free up as much, though, i used to draw with pencils a lot when i was younger and once the first 2 layers were complete I left the image on the side for a few weeks until I saw something that it represented and reverted back to line work over the top to create the image.
Unfortunately, my abstract painting is purely in the watercolour layer.
I gave the painting to my dad as he loved it, it reminded him of the sea cave I had discovered within the piece, but he could see allsorts of other images I hadn't even intended.
This video makes me want to pull out my watercolour blocks that I taped the edges on last year and start experimenting once again. I got a little bit blocked over what has been a very stressful winter period and so I've watched more than I have painted. At least that way I'm still learning. I've just got to put what I've learnt into practice.

@@allisondawrant I have been wanting to bring this to your attention. There is a handmade watercolor paint from a company called Artistic Isle. The paint is beautiful but the first time I used it I was very disappointed because it had so much glitter in it. And as a matter of fact the whole pallette was glitter! You may already know about these paints but if you don't look them up and give them a trial. After I used them for a while, I really was thrilled with their performance they are very pretty. I believe the maker had her start in Hawaii! She has some very novel offerings
Love this whole video! Thanks for loving on my artwork ❤. I love working in layers but waiting for layers to dry can be a bit annoying LOL! But working on multiple pieces at a time can totally solve that problem. I sometimes use a hairdryer but it just depends because you are right it can kinda mess with the paints if they are too wet. You can save your tape on the shiny side of freezer wrap paper so it's not just hanging on the side of your table

To answer your question- I may have unintentionally layered watercolours in a lot of my art poetry paintings... but now I am consciously trying to achieve more of that layered effect. Where do you purchase the wooden containers that hold your paint pans from other palettes? Loving your style and videos.
Some of the brands offer those wood/bamboo palettes. Some of mine are made by my father - like the wood trays that hold my Kuretake paints.

Chartreuse. I think that's the color name. It's a yellow green color.
