I can’t wait for TES 6 to have a fully-simulated constellation skybox. Edit: It’s been a year, but I genuinely do believe it would be a great idea. It’s not even that difficult. Just have a separate layer of the skybox with the constellations that moves as the in-game clock does.
This is genuinely one of the most amazing lore videos I've ever seen and massively increases my appreciation of Skyrim and TES. So engrossing! Thank you.
10 years old game. And I still am discovering new things about it. Skyrim takes heat for being resold a bunch, but it truly is a masterpiece of a game.
@@windowsxp9120 It's predecessors paved a lot of the road for it. I just want a sequel that will add to the series, 10 years is too long and makes it feel like the series is dead.
We have a star that behaves like azuras star. Only seen during dusk and dawn. Super bright. In fact it's not a star at all. It's Venus. Venus(and mercury but its harder to see Mercury) that leads me to believe that this is a planet which is Azuras plane of oblivion
Doing this video has made me appreciate the process Bethesda developers have gone through to make Tamriel's world building that much more real. My personal favorite star signs: 1. Tower 2. Steed (love that the Dwarven "steed" is a Scarab too) 3. Serpent. Making this video has made me fall in love with it in all its glory. Can you believe it's the only one NOT to exist in the night skybox? It also has no attached month. Yet you can technically be born under it. Bad. Ass. That's so metal. What does it mean? By Constellation alone my favorite would be the Lord. It's so intricate but also looks like a happy face at the bottom of his robes. What are your favorites?
I know this is a year old comment but I just thought of something having to do with being born under the Serpent. Maybe, since even after a year in Skyrim the constellations are still slightly offset, your proposed leap year is actually a thing, and when you're born on that extra day/one of them if there's multiple, THAT'S how you can be born under the Serpent. Rogue days for a rogue star sign.
The serpent has actually quite the interesting lore, it's supposed to be Sep's (lorkhan for my elven friends) skin moving through the nightsky, threatening to eat the other constellations
The fact that some constellation are obscure is totally real to life. Tons of them just aren't clear at all. Decades ago South Park did a great joke about this where they're at a planetarium and the guy points out two little stars that form this huge battle scene called "The Crusades." I still find that relatable.
Time to rewatch the leftover lore series again instead of sleeping. This one and the lunar calendar are my favorite episodes because nighttime magic, and the 1 year night sky is fun to put on while you're doing homework, reading, or other busy things.
This made my week to hear. These night sky vids are my favorites too. I also adore that that video made a background vibe. Thank you for enjoying them =)
I just started playing Skyrim, and one of the first things I noticed was the constellations. I’m super interested in space IRL so I started trying to match the constellations in the sky with the ones in the level up screen
"No constellations exist in the skybox in Elder Scrolls Online" ...is that why I never really got into the game? Some instinctual feeling that something was amiss in a sky that I only look at because "is so perty"?
@@ARTEMISXIX True. I really wanted to play this game but found the combat was too unbearable so I gave up. And it's definitely not singeplayer-friendly. Only buy it if you have friends :(.
No constellations in skybox but its used in mechanics and storyline of Craglorn zone is about why constellations disappeared from sky (because Serpent caused chaos there)
WoW! I had always thought the sky had more depth than you'd expect, always looked really realistic in that the stars looked like more than random dots. Great video, love TES and love its lore/theses kind of facts! Man, this is why I adore the Elder Scrolls, because these games are living, breathing worlds, not just games, but an entire universe to explore and discover. The amount of detail and depth is immense and breathtaking.
In Eldersrolls online, you actually meet the Warrior, Mage, theif, and serpent constellations. Its also hinted at that the constellations were once people. The early race of nedes used some sort of magic using nirncrux to ascend into the sky and become the celestials. I still find it baffling how the theory isnt covered more by lore masters. Like the nedes using nirncrux to become "gods" is literally on par with the Tribunal striking the heart of Lorkhan. It also makes you wonder what history nirncrux has to make it such a powerful substance.
This is the coolest shit. The #1 reason I spend so much time in the ES games is because they feel like real places, I just soak it in. There are games with better combat, better stories, told in more interesting and engaging ways, but no one comes close to the atmosphere of the ES games. I wish they had quests or just things to do that allowed us to prove our knowledge of the world in this way, maybe a quest that could only be completed when a certain constellation is at a certain point in the sky. More than anything, in a similar vein, I desperately hope that the next ES game has seasons.
Remember the first time I paid attention. Was years ago in Oblivion.I found a book on it believe it was in Anvil, was like no way..been looking up ever since..love to see them do more with seasons and weather in next Game..

I’ve been waiting for a video like this for 8 years. I always suspected the constellations were up there but I could never see them until now. Thank you
8:19 Love how you can hear your smile in your voice during this part, haha. Also for my favorite constellation, its hard to chose from the Reguard versions, they're all so cool. Especially the Steed and Ritual, before they were retconned into their simpler current versions
As much as many of us like to talk smack on Todd and Bethesda, you gotta admit they really put a truly gargantuan amount of thought and detail into so many details both microscopic and obvious. Its truly amazing that they weaved such consistent detail not only with lore but also within the games' mechanics and lore respectiveness. Props to the devs and you too Pat. So, SO SO many details go right over many of our heads, until we find videos like these that show us all those things we often just assume to be randomly thrown in details, or unrelated things as fillers, when in reality (ingame reality that is) it all actually is backed by the series' lore. Absolutely incredible, honestly. This makes me want to remove the (I think static) milky way galaxy night sky mod I have and use vanilla/modded vanilla just to be able to see the original skybox and constellations.
I usually play Warrior Characters and thus pick the Warrior Birthsign, but then I found out Last Seed corrosponds to August it made me happy since thats my birth month. So if i was in TES Universe I'd be born under the Warrior.

The night sky is one of my favorite parts of Skyrim, so its SUPER cool they put in the lore constellations AND made them circulate through the sky across time. I've always noticed the moons go through phases, but never tried to chart what they are. I'm doing some serious stargazing next time I play!
One of my favorite moments was going in one day, looking up and seeing the warior. Like, I see it all the time in lol up, but it just struck me one day in the skybox
Woah, woah, WHAT?! How have I never heard of this with my near two thousand hours of gameplay? How am I JUST now learning about this? Dang. I hadn't realized it now, but Skyrim's so much bigger than I thought, truly.
I have to say constellations must be the most underwhelming thing about the sky that I have learned what it actually is. I thought the stars were going to make actual images in the sky (even wondered how it was even possible). No one really ever explained constellations to me. I'd look at the sky and just see random clusters of stars. Perhaps this year or the last one, I have finally stumbled upon a picture of a constellation online and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It is just some stars that happen to be close enough for you to connect the dots if you use your imagination really hard! At least they've managed to perfectly represent it how ... it is in real life in The Elder Scrolls.
That's an incredible video I sadly only discover now, but jeez thanks for such a deep-lore explanation, it's so heart-warming to see someone explaining something with such passion ! :D
Wow, quality content. This is amazing, you gained a subscriber! As crap as Bugthesda is sometimes, they really make great games too with a lot of love.
I saw today your r/tes_lore post. That video was really incredible and added another layer for my next role plays in Skyrim. (Here comes the superstitious Dragonborn that only act in accordance with the stars favours lol)
This video was super interesting! Come to think of it, seeing as the stars are actually holes in Aetherius leading to Mundus, they don't necessarily move, it's Nirn's rotation, much like real life, that gives off that impression. Hence, the constallations make for a realiable reference to base the calendar off of.
I was always curious and interested in this. I first noticed way back in 2011 when used the "Wait" feature and saw the constellations and planets and moon move about. I always wanted to find the constellations and all but never got to it. Real glad I ran into the channel! The Arginian Boobs one was the very first one I watched haha super interesting
So I learned something fun about this recently that didn't make it in the video, but ESO's skybox is actually Earth's southern hemisphere! I'm not sure the reason, but I've heard deep in the depths of lore they go to explain why constellations don't exist in the same way in ESO as they do in the core games. Might be an interesting thing to continue investigating.
Greetings! The video was AMAZING! I kust want to let you knkw that I rp as an Astronomy Professor in the ESO games. I'm trying to connect real life facts and see what ESO brings to the table. For example, finding Azura's star aprox location was really neat! Now, I do have a question, what is that galaxy like streak across the sky? Ever notice it? Id love to work with you in solving this mystery unless its already solved and I just dont know about it lol. Anyway, thanks for your time making this vid! I'll go ahead and sub and hit that bell for ya.
That sounds like an awesome RP... what a creative idea for a character! AFAIK the ESO skybox is a copy of Earth's Southern Hemisphere. From a Lore standpoint though, in all games, my guess is that it's simply the gods having a bit of fun in the creation of Mundus. Not exciting, but I'd give it support by the fact that things are geocentric for Nirn's celestial environment... there simply are no galaxies. There are just planes. However, I'm always open to collaboration on deeper research on the subject if counterarguments present itself, especially in game mechanics. Thank you for your comment. I'd love to one day return to the night sky (after finishing my short list of video ideas) to research Masser & Secunda a little more... so it might be cool to revisit some night sky things I might have glanced over!
so cool!! ive actually been stargazing since covid started and can locate the summer triangle & jupiter now... didnt know i could do it in enderscrolls too!! will give me fun stargazing to do when the stars arent out irl :D
Fun fact, when you attune to one of the standing stones in Skyrim, if the matching consolation is in the sky it will cause the stars to glow brighter, I think the dots connect as well but I’m not sure.
Its incredible :0. I can't believe that game developers do stuff like this, especially when most of players are clueless and nothing suggests that such element of the game exists.
What if the Snake appears in the next TES Game and it portends (portents?) great DOOOOOOOOOM!!!? Seriously though, I have an interest in astrology (yes, not not astronomy even though it's also really cool!) so I really enjoy it when fictional setting include a whole system of cosmology that includes the stars shaping little characteristics of the people below them. Just a bit of fun. :) Thanks for the video, it was really cool. And I always wondered if the skybox included the constellations. I also imagined I saw them, good to know they were there! :D
Extra: I *ALWAYS* pick the Shadow in my first playthroughs. It's the coolest. But the Lover, Atronach, Apprentice, and Lord are cool too. And interesting to note they set them up as 3 charges to 1 guardian. In astrology every sun sign has three aspects to it as well e.g. Pisces has Cygnus, Pegasus, and a dolphin I can't remember the name of....or not, but there's also 12 signs in total just like ES, and a contentious 13th sign Ophiuchus, which is a snake. :)
It's shamefully hard on video, especially with UA-cam dropping quality just a bit. I would recommend trying it with a bright star mod in game! It took me a long time before i really started recognizing them.
my Favourite Star Sign is my Own The Lover before Knowing it Month it was Under IRL i liked it knowing it Appeared on my birthday made it way better. Lover Appears in Sun's Dawn on RL February using Gregorian calendar
It's sad that we don't see the serpent in the nightsky because its in my opinion the most interesting constellation lorewise but I understand why they wouldn't implement it as it doesn't work like real constellations But I hope they change it in tes 6, which might even be the case because the game is most likely set in hammerfell, where the legend of the serpent constellation comes from
I'm a Gothic guy, and objectively Gothic games were much better in most regards to Morrowind(which came out after 1st Gothic), but i admire the detail in lore of TES. It partially repays for the gameplay boredom and frustration i had with test games. Tho i feel like Gothic could get to similar level if it got a chance, TES had a massive headstart in this regard. It just makes me think how it could be if both games could equal eachother and go on as direct competitors, aside of Gothic getting short end of the stick aside few places in Europe where it got a cult following.
3:35 1 day = half of 5min30, should be 2min45? Have i missed something ? Also isn't Azura's star just the Sun? It is the star that appears below the Steed.
Other People : *watching videos of NASA explaining the planets and the stars* Me, a 30 years old nerd: *watching a video of a nerd explaining the stars in a video game*
I mean, the cycles might be taking longer and longer because lore states time moves slower in the North. Sure, Morrowind had Solstheim but they also had limitations that wouldn't let them change how fast the skybox moves, and I have no explanation for Oblivion. But with Skyrim maybe they took the time slowing down thing literally, or it is literal because of the towers. Never know, the ambiguity of ES.
He deserve more than any other to do videos on the lore and even make money out of it. You're definitely the only person in the entire world that ever addressed the subject. Which is sad. I knew it was a thing since Oblivion and searched the entire internet (fuck you search engines, especially google) and finally found the one post you made on Reddit. PS: I'm that one guy that endorsed your video on the nexus XD. Edit: Will you do the second video?
Yes! I absolutely have interesting cosmological information from my travels across skyrim! from my viewings of the vaulting heavens above I have been able to uncover that the world of Nirn may indeed to be affixed to a plane rather than the orb that we had previously thought. meet me in rorikstead to discuss this. dont be followed!
I love the constellation mechanics in these games but I've always considered more of the astrological aspects. I would love to learn more about the signs in constellation and astrological aspects. I'm the sign Lord. Interestingly enough IRL, I heal faster than typical people and am sensitive to temperatures like heat. Heal with fire weakness? Is this just a coincidence? I wonder if this works this way for other people too. LeftoverPat and others...what is your sign and can you scare the undead (ritual), have more energy (mage), or once you run out of energy you don't have a second wind (atronach) or some other coincidental aspect that works with these? Just for fun, of course.
Awesome comment! My personal sign is the Steed b/c I was born in June, so I usually roll characters that are more like me to that. Characters who aren't like me I usually roll Lover for no reason or Atronach for the challenge
@@LeftoverPat Thanks a lot for the compliment! That made my day. :D That's awesome and very interesting. The steed is a great sign. Who wouldn't want to run like the wind? I think I like the Thief for the speed and luck, agility is a bonus, and Mage or Apprentice for the magic boost. Atronach would be a good mage challenge. I think I will make a snake character as an evil challenge character now that I know about the snake.
HO-LEE crap I thought this video was going to be defending skyrim's skill tree. Was positively surprised about it. TES V might have a lot of bland stuff, but the skybox is one of the best things in that game.

Finally an argonian main youtuber
my favourite night sky experience was being thrown up there by a giant
Such a great lore vid, subbed
Why don't you have at least 50k subs? Great vid
honestly i can't even recognize/discover constellations irl much less in a game lol
if i remember correctly, the skybox for tes online is a lot more luminescent, i wonder if they implemented the same system and updated it.
@@LeftoverPat WAH! that's crazy!
Binging your videos. Amazing stuff
An excellent and interesting video. Always interested in seeing videos about little known lore.
Fun fact, when you attune to one of the standing stones in Skyrim, if the matching consolation is in the sky it will cause the stars to glow brighter, I think the dots connect as well but I’m not sure.
I wish this was true, but please share what mod this is cuz that's amazing!
Its incredible :0. I can't believe that game developers do stuff like this, especially when most of players are clueless and nothing suggests that such element of the game exists.
Agree, it's mindblowing!
Thanks for the video, it was really cool.
my eyesight is so terrible that I can't even see the stars properly.
Great video by the way.
It's shamefully hard on video, especially with UA-cam dropping quality just a bit. I would recommend trying it with a bright star mod in game! It took me a long time before i really started recognizing them.
A zooming feature would really help with that. What's an observatory with no telescope, after all?
Yep. I subscribe. Well done
ive always wondered if you could see the constellations in game
That was well done.
Love the part about the serpent. Great video! (:
my Favourite Star Sign is my Own The Lover
before Knowing it Month it was Under IRL i liked it knowing it Appeared on my birthday made it way better.
Lover Appears in Sun's Dawn on RL February using Gregorian calendar
They definitely need to add the serpent into the next elder scrolls title.
It's sad that we don't see the serpent in the nightsky because its in my opinion the most interesting constellation lorewise but I understand why they wouldn't implement it as it doesn't work like real constellations
But I hope they change it in tes 6, which might even be the case because the game is most likely set in hammerfell, where the legend of the serpent constellation comes from
That's amazing! If this skybox were any more detailed, Neil DeGrasse Tyson would be tweeting corrections.
I would agree. if Gothic got the same amount of love for the same length of time, it would be amazing to see where the series would be today.
I fond the warrior befor but I never knew they were all their neet.
3:35 1 day = half of 5min30, should be 2min45? Have i missed something ?
Also isn't Azura's star just the Sun? It is the star that appears below the Steed.
I'm still waiting for the day Pat goes fully schizophrenic and dives into Tower Lore
Other People : *watching videos of NASA explaining the planets and the stars*
Me, a 30 years old nerd: *watching a video of a nerd explaining the stars in a video game*
wow around 6min I just realized how deeply-'lory' the champion point system is in ESO, wtf? Cool!
That's just lovely
someone should make a mod in skyrim that makes the stars brighter when you get a perk
Best elder scrolls vid ever !!
Cant wait fir a UA-camr to lock themselves out if the map and navigate solely using the night sky
My favorite constellation is Capircornus because its my sign.
Amazing
Do a video of the painted world quest & the goddess kynarith pwease 😶😐
Typically when I play Skyrim and look at the night sky, the only two things I’m interested in seeing are the moons and the aurora borealis.
So. Fetchin'. Cool.
Watch the skies ...
"can we find azuras star"? Kinda. It's in my pocket, but it's the black star now.
Is... is that Azuras Star?!
TES V might have a lot of bland stuff, but the skybox is one of the best things in that game.
i agree!
This is the video I always wanted Neil DeGrasse Tyson to make.
I always wondered how Azura can have a star if she was never a magna ge
