- In my first tutorial video, I show you how to open up, break, fix, and put back together, a Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 lens.
Specifically, this video addresses what to do when the iris lever gets stuck underneath the "sharkfin," as shown in this video by Jakub Mika: • 004 Sharkfin Button Trap
Thanks for watching and please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you have about Canon FDs or cine-mods: petergproductions@gmail.com

I've used one of these 50mm, f/1.8 lenses since 1982. Very sharp. Always a fine, crisp image! Canon lenses have always served me well.
Wow! This helped to fix my FD 28/2.8 lens. Thanks!
So glad to hear! This is exactly why I made this video
Awsome video! You also saved my rear. Many thanks!
The part which is off the camera at 13:28 is exactly what I neded, you could have saved my life :-(
You just saved me a hole lot of trouble, thank you for this video!
Hello. I did everything exactly the same as in tutorial (about 50 times), and everything is fine till final locking: there is no way to set two red dots in the same position - the mount rotates and blocking about 7 millimeters earlier. Any ideas what to do with this problem?
Peter: Great video. Do you know who does repairs like this that I can send my Canon FD 50mm 1.8 lens to? Do you do repairs?
Excelent tutorial!
I was able to follow all the steps, but in the end I couldn´t be able to match the red marks, doesn´t return to the original position.
Help me please :(
Any suggestion?
Did u find the answer ? I’m totally stuck on this final point. The same as on the video, after pressing release button nothing happens;(
Did anyone find out how to fix this yet?
Check this video out, the guy managed to fix it!

I know this is 3 years ago but you need to hold down the metal button near the red dot and rotate the bottom part after you snap the bottom part into the len like he did in the video.
Hey Peter, great video, definitely the clearest instructions and info on the net on this topic. Well done mate :)
I was able to follow all of your instructions except for the part of reassembly at about 16:30. Any chance you could share some extra info about how to attach the part with the 'goalposts'? Full disclosure I am trying this with the nfd 80-200 two touch so I understand there may be some differences however everything has been the same so far. Thanks!
Thanks Nico! Happy to help. I am less familiar with the telephoto zooms, but it can certainly be tricky to reengage the mount correctly so that all the posts/levers are in the right place and the whole thing fits together. It takes a bunch of trial and error most of the time, and especially on the telephoto lenses, you mostly have to line everything up and guide the mount in blind, since you can't see into the lens when re-attaching it.
My recommendation would be to reach out to Ed Mika about this. He engineers conversion kits for Canon FDs and is a wizard at fixing them. You find his stuff at edmika.com and his email is edmikainc@gmail.com
You could also maybe find some useful info in his videos like this: ua-cam.com/video/grVqMw3bvPY/v-deo.html
Best of luck!
I have bought the same crewdriver as the one you are using. I want to opens up my canon FD 135mm, but is seems the screwdriver is damaging the screws. and the screws wont turn. Any idea's why that is?
Hello! Have you ever done that with a nfd zoom? I have a 35-105 nfd macro, I tried to fix it but couldn't put it back together correctly.
Any advice for a stuck lens release button?
Great video. Helped me out a lot. Thanks!
Lifesaver : ) Helped me to reassemble my nFD 24 2.8. How on earth did you figure all this out?!
I wanted to clean the fungus on my lens and this is as far as i have gone with my 50mmsc fd lens. I wanted to go further but i was like “ you’ve pushed your luck up to here” there’s no going back there” haha. I didn’t manage to get through inside the lens :(
Great video thank you
Nice video, thank you.
Is the FD 50mm f 1.2 identical? I have one that I would like to dismount.
Nico Treize I believe the non “L” series version is similar. The 1.2L however is a little different as can be seen in this video: ua-cam.com/video/te5_PfKSR6c/v-deo.html

Thank you. This is not an L version.
Greetings.
Can you do nFD 85 1.8 disassambly guide ?
Particularly for focus ring repair. And if it possible to remove focusing ring without optical group disassambly ?
Very instructive video! It helps me to understand how it is made inside.
Any video about a focus ring stuck? Mine is stuck, not stiff but dead locked and I have no idea about how to fix it..anybody?
Have you converted a FD to EF mount lens similar to this one with only one post inside? I've converted a few with the 2 posts but ran into one that only has one post and not sure how to control thee aperture correctly.
Have you de clicked a 24mm?
Hi, I am having trouble with a fd 17mm, I had to clean it totally but now I am looking for the service manual to put it back together......
Anybody?
I am honestly struggling to get the three screws off my lens
anyone know a tutorial like this but for the FD 35-70mm lens? I have took it apart and cannot seem to put it back together lol
Haha I have the exact same Issue, have you found anything?
I need help.
13:06 you didn’t tell us about that little bearing earlier on the video. Now i think i lost it :( rip lens
Just buy a ball bearing on Ebay. I lost one on a Helios lens. Guessed at 1.5mm. Got a bag of 100 for £1.00 !!!
