Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лип 2024
- Lumley Castle near Chester-Le-Street in County Durham is said to be the county's most haunted castle. Lady Lily is the most famous ghost, yet there are a number of other spectres that are known to haunt the place. Join me in this video where I tell the story of the Lumley family's history, the tragic tale of Lily, and detail the experiences of the cricket teams that have stayed here over the years.

The Jolly Reiver is my project aiming to preserve and promote the forgotten folklore and history of rural Britain and Ireland. Primarily focusing on folklore and legends, you’ll not find me trying to deconstruct these old stories or trying to rationalise them with science and psychology. Instead I will present them as they were always told by our forebears, and leave the conclusions up to you. Videos are filmed on location to show you exactly where these stories took place. - Розваги
love old British castle please keep England England keep your heritage greetings from Christian syrian
o7 to you too bro.
Thanks fella, greetings!
We have to stick together. Hello from a Christian Lebanese man
I'm clearly on Team Lily, as I too choose to follow a different path. And I do hope Sir Ralph learned of the truth & dispatched those lying, murderous priests to somewhere verra warm. Holy men? I don't think so.
I'm with lily also. As an atheist turned pagan I see the atrocities that the church has committed under the act of 'god' simply get brushed under the carpet. Why were they not tried for murder?
Excellent! The seat of The Lumleys is at Cheam in Sutton, London's southernmost Borough, and there's a Saxon chapel there, where they are buried. I've never been in, but I bet that's quite spooky too! The moustache suits you Sir, gives you an air.. Nice one Riever! ⭐👍
Thanks fella, glad you enjoyed!
@@TheJollyReiver I went to ask you a question
@benjamingolden7803 yeah?
@@TheJollyReiver if it is OK if I could have your contact number? Because I know that he has studied it in history, that the goldens and the wallers from England and my grand, mothers, father side and her ancestors are Vikings from Denmark, Sweden and Norway, because I need to figure out if I do have old England blood Because I also have Viking blood and my dad says that the Goldens are Russian because my grandmothers family is from Russia and my grandfather side is Jewish and my mother side is German and Scandinavian which is Swenson
Really enjoyed this. What fantastic architecture and atmosphere; the Yule decorations are really lovely and how could anyone not love a hotel with old books in the rooms. I was wondering if Lily was the common or nickname for his wife's name Eleanor. My grandma's name was Eleanor and she was also called Ellen, Nell & Nellie. Brilliantly told, as always. :)
Thanks for your kind comment!
Fantastic walkthrough of Lumley Castle. Your videos are very well-done! Amazing narration, editing and very atmospheric. It is now one of my key reference videos for future visits to Europe.
The castles are magnificent.. the scenery ethereal.. the stories intriguing and informative..
And you, sir, are as handsome as your voice is beautiful..
Thank you for your courage in staying overnight in a surely haunted castle to bring us this video., which in my opinion is your best yet.. kept us on the edge of our chairs it did!
You are much appreciated for all the reasons above🌹☘️
Jen999💜💙
Very kind of you, thank you!
@@TheJollyReiver You are so welcome.. like to let you know you are appreciated too :)
You are a good story teller and, talking about the area where I was brought up, I feel closer to home 🌞
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
Going to keep this for when I can watch it properly. Wasn’t long ago I did an escape room there! Lovely spot.
Hope you enjoy!
May I say that you look stunning.....I always like watching the content that you share ...also the Duke of Avalon is still one of my favorites...
Thank you for your kind comment Susanne :-)
A very well put together and informative video.Look forward to many more.👍
Many thanks!
Sir Ralph Lumley of Lumley Castle was my 18th great grandfather and Thomas Lumley my 16th gg so this is fascinating. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed!
Great video. The castle looked very cosy and welcoming, but I can well imagine it feels a lot different in the middle of the night when you are woken by something spooky.
Hi 👋🏼
Yes quite the contrast!
Love the vibes and music you used for when the becomes nightfall mate.
Very cool and atmospheric.
The new moustache looks stylish too.
9:18. The headless horseman could well be Ralph on his way to take care of business with the two priests maybe?
Thanks mate! And yes, could well be!
Love this one
Thank you!
Loved that the castle had Christmas trees and decorations. It's a lovely place, inside and out. But I think I'd be too much of a scaredy cat to book a room there! I can't blame the cricket teams. All the same, I always love a good old fashioned ghost story, particularly on Halloween and in the Christmas season.
Amazing video as all ways and story looking forward to more
Thanks man
Incredible video. Have enjoyed this immensely. Will be in that area (Chester le Street) tomorrow- will keep an extra eye open!
Great to hear, thanks for your comment mate!
A Very informative video. I’ve stayed in Lumley Castle twice for my cousins wedding and my 40th birthday. I didn’t experience anything paranormal. But I was talking to one of the cleaners, who had experienced paranormal activity, and was scared of one particular room. She said she liked to have the tv on while cleaning, to ease her nerves. She seemed genuine when reliving her experiences to me.
Glad you enjoyed!
Absolutely love your videos, Lumley Castle seems such a special place, really gorgeous architecture and gorgeous grounds. Loving the story of the Lumley family, so interesting! Thank you for this exceptional video
Glad you enjoyed it!!
That book by Rob Kirkup sounds a great read 👻
Fantastic video, very atmospheric :) and what a building
Yours sincerely Rob Kirkup Lol :)
Ah nice one mate! Didn't know you followed me. I'm a big fan of your books!
@TheJollyReiver ah you're too kind. I've a podcast now too which has a lot of episodes about places in the north east. Its called "How Haunted?"
I’ll certainly give that a look!
Excellent, nothing makes it feel more like Christmas for me than listening to some ghost stories.
On another note, the channel 'Forged in Ulster' has released a couple of Ulster Scots themed ghost stories recently. Maybe of interest to you with your Reiver heritage.
Keep up the good work.
Thank you! And yeh that’s a good channel!
That'. Looks like a beautiful place to visit and get a room at I love the stone work and have a happy Christmas 🎄🎁
I am glad that both of you who gave me a thumbs up 👍😎 thank you
Thanks mate, you too!
I can see this castle from my house.
Not a bad view!
You're very lucky. The views and area look stunning!
Really well presented and put together and excellent information! We are the resident paranormal team at Lumley Castle and regularly hold events during Halloween. Great video, well done.
Thank you!
Thanks very much JR. A really spooky episode. I love tales about the old castles as they're normally very haunted. Brilliant bedtime listening 👍
Glad you enjoyed!
Ming the Merciless is looking well :p great video, JR! always a good day when you upload
Glad you enjoyed fella
I have a great fascination with Castles. I just love the history and feel behind them and how they are furnished.
Tapestries etc. Soo nice.
Yes they’re great. Always love staying in them!
Great video for a frigid, damp, Sunday afternoon as I potter about moving into my new home. Thanks for the History lesson (*_*)
Glad you enjoyed!
Great video. I love the music. Can you recommend any music or place to find it like this?
Thanks fella. Aside from one or two pieces of music I have my own composer that creates them for me.
Many thanks for the mention in your credits for my drone footage. Brilliant and well put together video. Very interesting and I’m now a subscriber to your channel. Well done. 👏👏🎥
Brilliant 👏
I remember this hotel was in news a decade ago when some cricket team toured England.
Would like to visit one day.
Great rundown. Sadly you didn’t mention Poppet the castles cat who haunts the castle ground in search of cuddles.
We loved Poppet! Sadly when I was filming I couldn’t find her, she only appeared when I didn’t have the camera!
Cool video and nice moustache
Thank you :-)
Top place - cosy and creepy - stopped in out buildings . Castle next time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great story! Very informative, keep up the good work
Thank you :-)
Great video 😊
Thank you!
Great video 👍
Thanks mate!
Fantastic video. The bar has a great vibe. Worse places to spend the afterlife.
Glad you enjoyed!
The narration was perfect
Thank you :-)
Fantastic video Reiver. Always intended to find out more about this place as I live so close by.
Was the stache for movember or is it a permanent fixture? Either way it becomes you.
Glad you enjoyed lad! Well I think I’ll keep it for a while, thanks for the compliment!
I never heard of this castle before so it was good to get the history of it thanks
My pleasure!
What a stunning looking place. You're very lucky to have stayed in such a wonderful area and castle. Love these buildings. The 'tach is very fetching, too. Great video, keeo up the historical and spooky tales!👍
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed!
EXCELLENT video!! I, for one, wouldn't mind staying at Lumley Castle at all!! Maybe one day!!👏👍💚❤👻
Go for it!
Love your content, especially the ghost stories of North of England and the borders
Thanks man
Wow another brilliant video! What a fascinating piece of history, and so nice that the castle embraces its old legends and folklore from times gone by. I do feel really sorry for all those cricketers though! Happy Holidays to you and yours, keep up the great work :D
Thanks man, all the best for the new year!
@@TheJollyReiver You too! I'm looking forward to seeing what stories you have coming next year. I've just made a video about a Banshee on Rathlin and am really excited to see what footage you captured over there too :)
@theramblingseanchai Excellemt mate, I’m gonna email you shortly with a little proposal.
I lived quite close to here and I remember hearing stories of this place such as when the Australian cricket team stayed there and one of the players saw a ghost and was so scared he refused to stay there. I'd love if you cover Chillingham Castle which again is not too far from here (just north in Northumberland). Thanks for the excellent videos.
Glad you enjoy mate! I’ll not be covering Chillingham this year but I plan to cover something very close by..
Isn't it amazing. All those descriptions of ghosts and yet not one was captured in this video. Like many places the stories are just stories :-) Good video though.
Thank you :-)
fantastic and entertaining video as usual mate any chance your thinking of doing a video on crook hall my ancestors used to live there ive been many times and can't lie how creepy it is at night
I do plan on doing that soon! I’ve got the ghost stories noted down from there.
looked haunted to me. - new subscriber
Thank you :-)
I stayed at Lumley Castle, and actually stayed in the King James Suite. I didn’t get a wink of sleep. Very eerily. Oddly I now live in Cheam in Sutton where some members of the Lumley family are buried.
Put in ear plugs , have a few Scothes before( or 3 glasses of wine) and pref cuddle up with somebody u know well and I bet ull sleep like a three yr old!😂 . Ghosts are just attention seekers and lost souls , just ignore them.
What a brilliant video! I confess despite being lucky enough that Lumley castle is visible from my home in Chester-Le-Street I never actually knew the details of the ghosts there, although everyone here in Chester knows that it is haunted. Also perhaps a video about the Lambton Worm if you are ever along this way again?
Glad you enjoyed!
the guy in the corner of the bar is aragorn, or strider :)
Nice moustache and what a nice peaceful place. I wonder if this hotel is a heritage protected grade 1 or grade 2 building. The interior architecture seems to have been preserved for its original features. Also I think you meant to say east Indian cricket team rather than west Indian because their names sound east Indian.
Oh you have a moustache now sweet 😊✌️♥️🌟
Indeed aha
Hi, can you give the name of a soundtrack, that sounds at the beginning of your video Duke of Avalon?
It’s nameless fella. I have it privately commissioned.
Hey JR aka D of A distinguished reminiscent of Capt E Black Adder but but smooth is best 😊
Thank you aha
That is my ancestors
Handsome n rare
Nooo
What is that music called that you use..?
I have my own composer that makes it :-)
Christmastime in a haunted English castle turned hotel? 🤩 Sign me up!
It was good fun!
If ghosts do exist and " haunt " the rooms , how horrible to be trapped between life and death , neither alive or dead.
How awful.
I was wondering when you'd get into facial hair. Seems like you. You'd rock mutton chop side burns, sir!
Ahaha I doubt that but thank you for the confidence 😂
you sure his name wasn't Casper ...
Why would they throw bodies down wells where they get water from.
I would like to stay in that hotel but what if lily’s comes into my room and attack me
"Old Pagan beliefs" now that would be referring to the indigenous religion of Western Europe #Witchcraft which is the oldest religion in the world.
6:00 My sympathies go *immediately* with Lady Lily! She was, in her time, what this world needs far more of today, *ATHEISTS!*
