The Wolf of Allendale | English Folklore
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- In December 1904, a wolf was on the loose near the town of Allendale in Northumberland. Sheep were being slaughtered, sightings were reported outside a school, and soon large scale hunts were being undertaken by the locals. But where did the wolf come from? And what happened to it?
Your storytelling is second to none! I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Thanks mate, much appreciated!
MrBallen is still the king.
Got up from my bed feeling very poorly; found you by accident and immediately was so engrossed in your tale that all my pain was forgotten. I love all this local folklore and your voice is so mellifluous! I remember the “Hexham Heads “ very well. It happened to occur in a house near where I lived and every day we used to run the gauntlet past that house. No, it wasn’t a sprawling old ruin but a very ordinary council house in the middle of an estate and rumours had it that the family concerned were only after a bigger council house as they, being a Catholic family, like ourselves, had an enormous family who attended St Mary’s Roman Catholic School as did our family!!! Who knows? At the time however, at the age of 15, I didn’t like to take my chances after seeing the photograph in our local newspaper, the Hexham Courant! 🫣🫣🫣
Glad you enjoyed! I’ll no doubt be heading there for my Hexham heads video af some point!
There must be slightly differing versions of the story, because the version I know places the house on Alexandra Terrace around the corner from the QE High School.
Sadly, it's almost always a stray dog or dogs.Thats why when I kept sheep, I also had a big fiercely horned Nubian billy goat and a few nannies. Billies are very territorial. There may have been a wolf, but most of it is probably down to dogs and rumors.
Adding to my bucket list... Visit Allendale, last Saturday of September for burning, beer and howling! Great video, loved it! Cheers, Kitty.
See ya there!
Always get excited when I get a notification that you've posted a new video. Your voice is one of a storyteller! I live the folklore and history, as I found out my ancester were border reivers.
Excellent! Glad you enjoy my videos! :-)
Great video thanks
:-)
Hey JR fantastic content as always x
Thank you :-)
Fantastic story, I really enjoyed the deep dive into the newspaper archive which added so much to the video, absolutely worth the delay. I look forward to seeing what you bring back from distant lands.
Agreed! I enjoyed the newspaper clippings as well. 👍
Great video and folklore and as always and great history thank you hope you have a good time on your trip and looking forward to more great folklore and the rest that's coming up I love mythology and folklore
I am working on my new novel, and it is set in Northumberland. The scene I am currently working on is set during the Tar bar'l.🔥🔥🔥🔥
This video is perfectly timed! 🕞
Thank you, Jolly Reiver 🏴
Your channel has been a great help to me.
Glad I could help!
Grand video Reiver. Well researched and perfectly presented. I'm intrigued to hear more about the man/wolf haunting of the 70's.
Glad you enjoyed! And if you’re interested, there’s quite a few videos on that topic already. If you search Hexham Heads, you’ll find it!
Looking forward to seeing what you have for us from Antrim. I was in Ireland in 1998, but never made it into Ulster.
This was a fantastic video and another piece of UK history that I did not know about! Thanks!! 👍
Glad you enjoyed!
I'm learning so many stories that I've never heard about. My grandfather was English and my grandmother was Scottish and I grew up listening to stories from the homeland. That being said, I've not heard about most of the stories you tell. Great job.
Ooh! I'm so excited! My grandmother was from County Antrim. She came to the US as a bride after WWII. Can't wait to see what you have to show us!
Another excellent tale thank you
Great video, really got into this one. Really enjoyed your presentation and storytelling again and following the story through newspaper cuttings too. Thanks! 🐺
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've never seen a Jolly Reiver video i didn't like
Brilliant video. Your channel is fascinating. I really enjoy the content
Glad to hear it!
This is fabulous! I can't believe I came across this. I had seen a few of your previous videos but wasn't subscribed before today. Allendale is where my Chatt family (my mother's maiden name) originated. They left the area and migrated to Indiana and then onto Illinois here in the US in the 1840s. I know that the old homestead is still there and I keep a photo of it near my bed that was from my grandfather's book on Chatt history. It was simply wonderful to see this. It evoked something in me very deep and very moving. To see the countryside of our old homeland there and note how very much it looks like mid and southern Indiana terrain my ancestors moved to here, it was moving indeed. Blessings in all things.
Top!
great video, thank you for telling these stories and keeping the local history alive
Great storey, also I love your jacket!
Thank you!
What an excellent way to start an autumnal-feeling sunday morning. 👍
Love your videos, my grandfather lives in allendale and ive heard this story before, great stuff to see the place featured on the channel
Glad you enjoyed mate!
I grew up on the other side of Carlise from Cumwhinton, hadn't heard this story before. Thanks!
Great story, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed!
the wolf 🐺 is good story telling well done mate 👍😊
JR, you are always a pleasure to listen to. I'll let you know many weeks ahead of time that I'm returning to Southern England. I'm planning on being back on May 20th, through July 25 (I do believe) of 2024. I'm going to try to get some filming done. My PhD, involving teaching the Paranormal, will be in its Proposal phase, so lots of work to be had. I hope we get a chance to meet-up and chat. -- @GlennieMGPIS in Vermont
Love these longer format videos, the quality just keeps getting better with each upload
Cheers man. Yeah I think the 20 min ones seem to be the most well received
I look forward to these videos, they are fascinating stories.
I must say I greatly enjoy your work and admire the amount of research and physical evidence you present. Thank you.
My pleasure!
Beautifully done, this .. love these stories .. and your way of telling them .. also the scenery is exquisite..⚘
Thank you for your videos., looking forward to those you do in Northern Ireland ..☘
Btw .. Your demeanor and your voice are what set your vids above the rest .. both are magical⚘☘
Jen999💜💙
I love this story and you do an awesome job telling it thank you 😊
I absolutely love storytelling because it keeps ones community or nations folklore alive for other generations to appreciate. Here in Maryland we have so much both American, British, and Native American history it's wonderful and I believe we the ones who love folklore then we are the best storytellers.
It's a shame modern life and social media is slowly killing the art of story telling and local myths In general. We have Black Shuck and you guys have Dogman. 😅👍🏴🇺🇸
I wish you all the best during your Co. Antrim trip.
Thank you!
excellent stuff
:-)
Love your vids my man. Great storytelling and exceptional footage 👌
Thank you mate :-)
Thankfully the Wolf is looked at rather more favourably these days, instead of folklore and fear, and 30 miles would be a stroll in the park for a wolf
Hi, great to see you cover this and to hint at a further episode about the Hexham Heads. I wrote the two-part article on the Hexham Heads for Fortean Times magazine as well as helping the writer of the Quest for the Hexham Heads Paul Screeton write that book (in fact I appear in the book both as a sort-of character and in the photograph at the start), I would love to help you with the video about the Hexham Heads, could even show you around the area where it happened.
Sounds great mate! Shoot me an email and we’ll talk things over!
I like wolf stories. Thanks. Also like the English stories. Nice voice, too.
Top work, fella! Really enjoyed that.
Cheers mate!
Finally an Irish Storyteller. :) i’ve found so many Scottish storytellers - and they’re so authentic and are imbued with Scottish spirit - as you are with your spirit of Ireland. thank you much. 🇮🇪 🐺🌷🪻🌱
Very kind of you, but I’m English :-) Will be filming in Ireland soon though
lmfaoooo
He is ruddy English and Allendale is in England. Nothing todo with Ireland
Well told as always thank you
Thank you :-)
Interesting story, I can't believe I have not heard of the Allendale wolf before. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
Enjoy your trip to Antrim, it's a gorgeous place.
My pleasure! And thank you!
Here on Delmarva in Maryland we are a former British colony with 200 plus years of history so all the swamps and existing plantations and even the Indian burial grounds which our British ancestors defiled so we have so many urban legends which I experienced me and my father of man who died in the 1960s trying to divert a river so I love Ole British folklore because it's similar to our own British colony history.
Great voice for narrating. 👍
I'm enjoying your video's a lot.
Always keep me interested.
Thank you!
Hey Jolly Reiver really love your stuff, I used to listen to a guy year's ago who used to talk of these tales, really missed him but I'm glad you've shown up....😉
Again, most enjoyable and very enlightening. Hurry back with new videos.
On August 31, 2023 will be a Blue Moon. Time to watch American Werewolf in London again. Thanks to this video I ordered the Oscar edition which is supposed to come one day before this "event".
Wow! Great video. Extremely interesting and well told.
Thank you!
Thank you for this..
Some very beautiful wolves in this.😊
Thank you for this account. So glad that the poor pusspuss, WASN'T thrown to the wolf. 😊
Glad you enjoyed!
I love folklore history, and I like his voice it's really claiming,
The Wolf of Allendale. 😍 Yes. Going to enjoy watching this with a nice cup of tea. 🍵😊👍

What excellent investigative work!
Thank you!
Have been watching your content for about 6 years now. Didnt check in on you for the last year. Just came back now by random to see you have 30k subs on this channel! Good to see your doing well for yourself and wish you the best in the future!
Thanks mate, much appreciated!
You tell a fine tale Reiver...🐺😁
Good vid!👍🏻 Looking forward to your tales from NI.😊
Wolves work in packs, being brought up & still residing in the rural Scottish Borders, one lone wolf could kill a sheep with ease, however, it could not kill an adult horse, which would've easily outran it. Perhaps the horse was still a foal or very old & ailing. Another great story Jolly Reiver & well received by one whose ancestry is a who's who of Border Reivers !
Cheers mate!
Or maybe the horse was tied up or in a pen or stable?
A lone wolf could absolutely kill an adult horse given the right circumstances. The "horses" at this time were breeds like Highlands or Dales they were basically large ponies breed for strength and obediance not speed!
Interesting video and these film clips of actual wolves are beautiful. So sad that the one 100 years ago was killed by a train.
Wow what a fantastic fascinating video thank you for sharing it ❤ 🐺
Absolutely fantastic video as usual, I always enjoy the history around Northumberland and Durham. Its a shame about the Zoo closing in Shotley, it would have been interesting to see how it progressed over time.
Glad you enjoyed mate!
Brilliantly done 😊
Thank you :-)
Looks almost exactly like Sonoma County where I live in California. Beautiful.
great story well worth listening to,thankyou
Cheers mate
Grand story this is lad. Do you happen to know if the song "witch of the Westmorland" has any Basis in Folklore. Love from god's own country!
Excellent film as ever! All the best with the work in Ireland, look forward to seeing the results! ⭐👍
Thanks mate!
Nice the hear the story behind the beer! Seriously thanks for sharing this
My pleasure mate
Another brilliant video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed!
I went to Allendale a couple of times when I was little since it was close to a place me and my family often went. Unfortunately I never saw the celebration that takes place their but it was a lovely town nonetheless. The elks head close by has some great food.
I cannot wait to hear what stories you unearth here in my home county . There is certainly plenty to choose from .
The headless horseman is always a good one x
Very much looking forward to visiting!
I live near consett and im really interested in the surrounding areas folklore and history. Ive got many storys id love to be able to share with you.
I’d love to hear them fella
My new fave channel
Thank you :-)
Fascinating story xx
Good video from the jolly revier ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I can't seem to find thr Pirate of Porlock video on the channel anymore. Is it there there I just can't find it, or is it gone for good? A remake if possible would be good - it is a really great story!
Made it public for you again mate
@@TheJollyReiver Thank you!!
I live up the road from the picture of shotley bridge
Consett way?
Yes on benfieldside road I used to live in the flats above the shops in the old picture
Nice one. I’m originally from round that way too.
Great video as always ❤
So long as it did not come ashore at Whitby in a storm as the sole living being on a wooden ship, I think we're all right now.
Did these events occur in Hexham as well as Allendale? It seems this isn’t Hexham’s first encounter with wolves and wolf-like creatures.
And people are invited to howl! 😂Brilliant! Long may these British traditions live 👍🇬🇧
I have a collie/ German pointer and a wolf/husky mix. Maggie is about 58 lbs. And Tala is about 84 lbs. They don't have to be huge to take down game. They work together and run deer down and eat them. I find deer parts in the yard all the time. So yes, it could happen.
Just a note, Maggie can jump our fence. The fence is 5 foot. She does it daily. And lastly I feed my dogs a lot daily. So they hunt for the chase. So could the wolf do all the things it was accused of? YES! I live in Southwest Arkansas. I have seen coyotes do many of the same things. A man in our community raised wolves to be exotic pets. Jezebel used to escape all the time. She was a beautiful solid black wolf. I would call him and tell him his wolf was out.
I propose you actually bring back wolves to UK. I’m being silly of course it would mean all of UK would have to change. I love the fact that here in Western Canada where I live we have two packs of wolves and guess what? They don’t like cattle and don’t kill our stalk and we want and need more wolves. Our deer population has gone over the limits and the deer now are dying due to various means. We need the wolf
What a sad story. RIP Ivanovich, the goodest of boys.
❤ 🐺
I keep falling asleep a minute or so in to the sound of the dog panting lol here goes my third attempt at trying to watch this😂
Saying he threw his (I'm assuming) wife's cat to the Wolf... I smell a rat!
Cats were kept to keep down the vermin in those day, not primarily as pets. The man could've easily thrown the cat at the wolf in an attempt to make good his own escape.
Hungry like the wolf
Made the mistake of trying to nod off to this was impossible with 4 almost back to back 15 min adds
Really? That’s not on. I’ll get that disabled. Thanks for letting me know!
Adds removed from the middle of videos now, going though all others to ensure they’re only at the start.
@TheJollyReiver 👍 all in all its a great vid if it wasn't for that probably just anomaly I had
So it was Bain's wolf? Not Wolfsbane😀🤣
Dammit why didn’t I think of that
Are you based in
Northern ireland?
At the moment yes but it’s just temporary :-)
@@TheJollyReiver there's this thing called giants ring in Belfast might be of interest.
@unwaw sadly my time has nearly ran out, but I’ll keep that in mind for next time thank you!
Have you got out about boldon or jarrow
I have to admit that I have a soft spot for Wolves.
Someone is a handsome reiver.
A bit further south from Allenheads across in Co Durham there's a Wolfclough Common near Rookhope.I don't know the origins of the name and it could be a corruption of something unrelated to wolves.
I hope they Reintroduce Wolves to this Country soon, we shouldn't have hunted them to extinction.
The US National Park Service reports that lone wolves will travel up to 500 miles looking for a new home. These wolves are tagged and observed in the US National Parks system.
😊 good story.
Poor thing. Roaming the countryside by itself just trying to survive. A pup with no other wolves to socialise with and is then killed by a train. I imagine it curled up under a rock in a ditch in a cold wet night, lonely and confused. At least it didn't go hungry and died quickly and still free
Wonder if it is a Werewolf?
