The Jolly Reiver is my project aiming to preserve and promote the forgotten folklore and history of rural Britain and Ireland. Primarily focusing on folklore and legends, you’ll not find me trying to deconstruct these old stories or trying to rationalise them with science and psychology. Instead I will present them as they were always told by our forebears, and leave the conclusions up to you. Videos are filmed on location to show you exactly where these stories took place.

As an Indigenous Native American with some Irish great great grand parent…I’m really interested in all things IRISH. I’ve seen several supernatural events in my lifetime. An unforgivable heart 💔🙏🏽…as a Nun, no wonder she had no rest. As a Christian we are called to pray for the sinner and ask the Holy Spirit to bring conviction. Thanks for sharing…it looks perfectly beautiful. 🙋🏻‍♀️🇺🇸

What’s fascinating is that the Irish have several believes That are in line with some indigenous native cultures.
It’s like we’ve all traded beliefs and superstitions throughout the centuries.
Or it could be that a lot of these spiritual beliefs came from a single source. Quite beautiful.

There's a very famous story about a nun that appears in the Bell tower of the cathedral of Puebla, Mexico, and jumps from it. Supposedly it is a reenactment of what happened when she fell in love with a French soldier of the army of Napoleon III when he sent his troops to Mexico to establish the ill fated Maximilian against Juarez . The story goes that when they were repatriated he had to went along with his unit back to France and she threw herself from the cathedral in despair.

I am a retired cop. I was a rural police officer responsible for policing 54 villages in rural Norfolk. One of those villages had the ruins of a Priory, some of the walls, arches and fishponds still remain to this day and are clearly visible from the road running through the village. Like a lot of these villages it has a legend and a ghost story. This particular village had the usual "WHITE LADY" story, the ghost of a nun from the priory. I had met numerous village people all of who were absolutely convinced that they had seen her. Acting on a tip off from Manchester Police, myself and a colleague kept watch a building in the village that was being used by a local gang master to accommodate workers. A guy wanted for a serious offence was believed living there and left with others to work on the land about 4:30am each morning. Our plan was to park up alongside the ruined priory concealed by a large Blackthorn hedge growing along the boundary of the priory. We could clearly see the building from there. The plan was to wait for them to be collected by a Transit van, stop it and nick the guy. We had a photograph of him faxed to us by Manchester. It was winter and we parked up about 3:00am. The car was parked nearside to the hedge. On the offside of the car was a flat field with no hedge or fence but had a drainage ditch about 8 feet wide between it and the road. It was winter and cold so the car heater was on. I was watching the building when lights came on and there was movement in what was the communal kitchen. So I was watching intently. Suddenly a woman dressed in a white cloak and hood walked from right to left across the front of the car and straight through the Blackthorn Hegde like it did not exist, no more than ten feet from me. I saw her plain has day. The hairs on the back of my neck went up it was incredible! I said to my colleague, "Did you see that?" Only to find that the wally had his eyes closed from the heat and tiredness, he never saw the woman. To this day I am 100% certain of what I saw. I saw a woman dressed in a white hooded cloak, walk across a 8 foot wide ditch and walk straight through a 3 foot thick Blackthorn hedge into the ruins of a priory. I obviously related what I had seen to those I knew in the village, their attitude was simply, "Oh so you have finally seen her too. Now do you believe us?" On an unrelated topic, we nicked the guy we were after.

@@TheJollyReiver It's MARHAM Priory in Norfolk, you can geolocate it, it is located opposite a road called SQUIRES HILL, the road we were parked on leads across fields to SHOULDHAM WARREN., you could probably research the history of the Priory, I never have. People in the village have been reporting sightings of the nun for decades. How many times have people heard stories of a "WHITE LADY?" Almost every community has one similar. I am 100% certain of what I saw, sometimes I ask myself If I had imagined it because of the local stories or if I had dropped off due to the heat in the car and dreamt it. What I do know for certain is at that time I was focused on the building we were watching, hell I could even see people inside the communal kitchen preparing their pack ups and filling flasks for their days work. A male and a female standing in the window at the sink, I was watching them prepare their stuff! and she just walked straight past the bonnet of the car and in front of my view, not ten feet from me. It was definitely a nun. If my bloody mate had not briefly fallen asleep he would have witnessed it too, that's the kicker! I know what I saw, it's just for years now, I still doubt if what I saw was real. Who in the hell believes in ghosts? Well as someone whose whole working life was based on finding hard evidence and eye witnesses. I now do, because I am one!

    Dear Jolly Reiver & Friends,
This was a frightening story and I could almost feel how cold and unwelcoming the place is. Even from across the Atlantic.
The part about large stones just popping out of place would prompt me to bring a friend along (the buddy system), or at least make arrangements for someone to come looking for you if you’re not back before dark. Can’t be too careful. Here in the States, people go missing in the forest and national parks every year. Even seasoned outdoorsmen and ex military folks.

Pray the rosary and some extra prayers to the Blessed Mother to care for Julia's spirit. The Blessed Mother takes souls bound on earth to Heaven. When I was 16 I encountered a ghost who was well known to the people who lived with him. I faithfully prayed prayer to God and to the Blessed Mother asking for her help before midnight for months until I was told that the ghost of the young man was gone. I could no longer feel the electricity that was constantly present in the home, as well as a cold hand on your shoulder. He was free, and has never been back since. So, pray. This is the best way to help the souls left on this earth who may fear going to Heaven. Their Heavenly Mother will help them home.

Irish Catholicism is a result of bastard England and the Christian crusades. No, Catholicism and Christianity both spell death to pagans so I'm not acknowledging your horseshit, as an Irish pagan.

So these people were terrified for months by this ghost waiting for your rosary prayer to work? All they had to do was get some holy water 💦 and sprinkle it all over the place while pleading the blood of Jesus and demanding that the ghost get out and go rest.

Sister Julia had a strange notion regarding God and forgiveness. She was surprised He forgave her sister?

First time seeing your channel; great content! Well presented. I'm originally from Antrim so it's interesting to see the connections-though I grew up in England and now live in Scotland. Ghost stories have always fasinated me. I probably visited here as a child though that'd be many moons ago. Great video! Do you travel all over UK? I've subscribed :)

When I was a young woman, I and my best friend were among the first to go to Corrymela, just up the road from Bonamargy. My friend was sure she saw a ghostly nun.

Maybe Julia is trying to show people where the treasure is or warning people it's not safe there due to the loose stones? The place does look eerie there's probably many spirits there. Thanks for the vid. Very interesting as usual.👍🏻😊

However often when they do this we misinterpret the event as something sinister because of how scary is is

I can understand how you truly believe in the stories and not just tell them by the fact that you didn't try the ritual.
In my place there was an abandoned friary (now it's a restaurant) who was abandoned in th 1600s and stayed so until a few decades ago and the people who went to visit it said that if you throw a rock inside the walls, something throws the rock back and in the church there is a fresco of Holy Mary that watched from a particular angle looks the Devil.
