Chandler, if you do the work for stretching over the horn with your hammer pien you'll get twice the action for the same amount of effort. I find myself corrected by other smiths for doing the same thing. Try it. Love your video's.
Chandler not trying to sound like a know it all. but when I upset a rod I will heat and them quench just the tip of the rod seems to help to keep it mushrooming evenly. you do good work. keep it up I enjoy your vids.
Just an idea here... When you heat up the rivet to upset the end, I noticed you fighting with it because it bent to far down the shaft. Could you clamp on a heat sink like a vice grip or something to draw the heat from the shaft during heating and leaving only the tip of the rod hot for peen-ing and upsetting?
As a smith who has to make tons of these if you want the head a certain size you need a length of heat and it will fight you the whole time no matter what. If you make smaller heads they dont even need upsetting if its just 1 or 2 cm of heat for the head it will be pretty small and won't bend away when upsetting.
Chandler you ever thought about getting or making yourself a rounding hammer? They should help draw out material faster so you don't need as many hammer blows.
Hello, Mr. Dickinson. I am an intermediate smith looking to dabble some in railroad spikes. As someone with plenty of RR spike experience, what can you tell me about the usability of them? Some say the spikes don't have the carbon content to make a good knife, but what do you say, as one who's made many knifes from them?
look at the head of the spike there are many different letter codes. from the knifes I have made I look for one that has HC stamped on the head. they are all different some say VHC some IHC and too many to list. as long as they have HC you should be good to go. if I could help you let me know. email me dukowitz85@gmail.com
What's dish liquid? Is it dish soap? why not just call it dish soap? What is the madness. Is it liquid that comes out of dishes if you juice them? So many questions, so little time.
Nice project. Entertaining as always. Love that you upcycled another railroad spike for the tool.
Another cool video and no busted knees!
Nice one. Great use of a rr spike. Looking forward to seeing the finished product that you're making these tools for. Keep the videos going.
Im not gone mess around with this one !! Wauw, you really let that poor spike feel what happen to your knee...lol
Hey Chandler I sure admire your willingness to try everything!
I like these "quick" projects. :D You should have a segment (if you will) where you pick a random stuff and make a quick video.
Like the way you make the tools you need instead of spending lots of money.

Dude that worked great..............THUMBS UP 100%
We old tinners called them rivet sets. Nice job
Nice info, thanks. So i could make a nail from 3/8 rebar somehow like this. Will a small propane torch heat the metal enough like this.

First thing I thought of was "Man I would hate to draw out that railroad spike."
Love your videos man keep it up !!!!

Good to know. Many people say even HC spikes arent quite "HC" enough to make knife-grade steel, but I believe personal experience. Thank you.
This dude's a heavy hitter alright, geez
chandler, how is your knee? anything broken????
You could also make huge nails with that thing.
How's the leg mate.
How's the knee?
Hows your knee sir
Yea I was wondering the same thing lol
Dude, Freaking love the videos! Keep it up, real quality stuff here!
Look at black bear for just video about making rivet sets he has a Riveter that is a Bic
do you not have a power hammer?
he does not
sweet
Why not punch the hole and save the strength of the extra metal?
Instead of upsetting the round stock first couldn't you clamp it in the vise slide your rivet header over the end of the bar and pein it. 👍
how's your knee
+xxGoWxx Deadpool
I bet that hurt the rest of the day.
thought you might be wearing knee pads today
Use the horn
Are your kids so busy they can't help you hammer?
Man! a hardy fuller or half on half off hammering would help you draw faster and easier. look up hammer control online.
