I was two weeks on vacation, so I have a bit of catch-up to do, BUT I wanted to thank you at this point. With all the current bad news I followed in the last days now, I came here for some entertainment, distraction, and inspiration to get out and do things - you provided all this. Thanks for a bit of lightness in a currently pretty dark Europe.

Not entirely sure about the idea of grey wheels on a grey vehicle, especially if the colours don't match.
Presumably, by the time we see this, the wheels will be done and you'll know whether it looks good.

I agree that chrome mirrors and big towing mirrors, they're aweful. Loving the colours. I just saw a Jeep Wrangler yesterday in the flat grey and it was so nice. I think they call it Sting Grey.

Regarding the mattress, We are Big Strong people/Men in South Africa, with an average weight off 120kg, that's the reason for the stiffness of the mattress and☝ 3X RWC Champions 💪

Andrew, probably a bit late now, but if you particularly like the standard wheels as I do, you can get the same style from a 105 series but they are 6.5 inch wide with zero offset. I have a set that I’m putting on my troop carrier with 255/85R16 which requires 6.5 inch rim width as a minimum. 👍
255/85R16 are the perfect size for a troopy. I've got them on mine in BFG KM3s and they look and perform great.
Yes, I have the zero offset 105series rims in 16x6.5" with the same 16 holes steel wheel centres and they look factory. Perfect for 255/85
Andrew, try an Exped air mattress they are fantastic. I replaced my roof top tent matress with a 100mm one and it fits well and is very comfy. They now make a 150mm one. Check out the sizes you might be surprised.

I added a Toyota TEQ sticker to the rear side panels of my Troopy - it was the symbol used by Toyota back in the 1960's 1970's.

When will additional information for the relay hub be coming out? Have three DC Hubs over 2 vehicles and one camper. Very interested, also what else your working on. Understand it’s top secret but may influence peoples builds so I think you should maybe advise what it is?
I'd go with a Rapid Power 200amp fully sealed alternator. They're 100% Aussie made in Brisbane QLD. You can get a 220amp non sealed one of you wish to go down that road.

A guy at work was into materials and noted the sinking of an aluminum hull ship during the Falklands. It's sinking behavior was new for the time.

I installed the Emu WIng / aluminum on my Lexus LX470. Not sure if i'd do it again. Drivers side went smooth. Passenger side not so much. I still have a bunch of trimming to do on the inside plastic panels. I wish there was more support for the product in the US since they are in Australia. I called them several times and the kit was missing a few parts. The outer rubber gaskets are already starting to crack and the truck is garage kept. On a do over, I'd probably spend that 1200 elsewhere, but I got sucked in by the coolness factor.

With the gullwings, ARB have a similar design on their canopies that work from the central locking and have a small button release hidden away. Did you consider those for the gullwing?
Hopper windows look really good. Do you have any footage of them taking out the OEM windows and fitting the new ones? I'd like to see how it's done so I can have a crack at doing it myself.

Funny you mention the ZA mattresses, my Bundutop has the same issue... I don't complain about anything like this and I'm not fussy but it's shockingly hard.

Legendary adventurer Kingsley Holgate is set for another cross border expedition and this time they will be crossing continents as well. After 39 journeys across the world Holgate and Land Rover are not done yet.
Driving in Defenders, the team will start from the most southern tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas and up to the most northern part of Europe, Nordkapp, Northern Norway. From there they head down to Red Wharf Bay, on the east coast of the island of Anglesey in Wales, where Maurice Wilks drew the first Land Rover in the sand in 1947 marking its 75th anniversary.
The journey is estimated to be just over 30 000 kilometres and will take approximately eight months to complete.
This extreme venture will see them leave from South Africa to Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, North Sudan, Egypt, crossing over the Mediterranean and in to Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France and finally the British Isles.
It looks from the photographs if he's using the new "Defender" LOL!

Dipping vs painting... they both look great, paint is durable: dipping is removeable
Andrew, I know you've already done what you're going to do with your rims, but there's always the option of of having new 'shells' (the part of the wheel the tire/tyre installs on) put on the original rim 'discs' (center portion of the rim that bolts to the hub). This is also a possible solution for the Range Rover Classic if you really want to keep the original look but run a modern tubless radial tire - you could have shells with the 'safety bead' and an appropriate width mounted at the same centerline.
I'm considering doing this very mod to my 48 Willys as there are no suitable modern steel rims available for it in 16" sizes.
As usual a stunning well thought out troopy. Why the cheap ass rims though? A good set of forged alloys or steelies would work wonders on the suspension.
Did you check Toyota Cement grey from the FJ Cruiser? (Another model with flat colours rather than metalics...)
Also depending on what style of wheels you are after I found Motegi Racing make a couple of sets of wheels in 16in that were far less blingy than the ROH wheels you have worked with currently. Though perhaps a second issue is the 5 stud pattern of the troopy(and 200) vs 6 stud on everything else out of Japan in the last 50yrs.
Agreed - I'd pick Cement too and keep it in the Toyota range of colours - the FJCruiser had the best choice of nonmetallic colours.
What an awesome unit. Andrew, what’s your view on clear protective wraps? Best of both worlds to preserve the paint while retaining original colour?
Hello, I realise I am NOT Andrew but this is something I have a fair bit of experience with as a consumer. I have a professional detailer who preps all my vehicles (& maintains them) & he’s very well known for quality work & has a heap of experience. He use to install tonnes of Vinyl but rarely works with it now, chiding PPF instead.
IMO, Vinyl wraps can really give any vehicle a unique finish and come with a number of advantages as well as disadvantages compared to repainting. That aside (because I don’t want to get into a discussion about what “Looks better” ) I would rather address what I think is your question & something that is overlooked by a lot of people considering wraps.
Whilst Vinyl wraps definitely give you more options for a different look, they do NOT always offer the BEST protection. An example of where the protection is not so good is for example a heavy stone impact. With Vinyl you can have a heavy stone impact & everything looks okay (you may not even notice where it hit the Vinyl) BUT when you remove the Vinyl (& eventually it will need removing) you may discover that the vehicles Paint is still cracked and chipped under the Vinyl. All you’ve really done is hide the damage from yourself. That doesn’t suit me.
I think a QUALITY PPF (Paint Protection Film) as opposed to Vinyl, is the way to go. Paint Protection film is actually designed to PROTECT the paint. It’s a multi-layered product which has layers that are designed to disperse the impact & by doing so it prevents the paint from cracking & thus chipping. Quality PPF also comes with Self Healing properties.
I bought myself another (Sports) car. The car went straight from the dealer to the place where I get my work done & they did a full Paint Correction on it. All new cars come with scratches & imperfections 🙄 often damage is done when not so clever “detailers” working in dealerships prep the cars for delivery. They use filthy sponges & chamois (& all that old tech cleaning gear) & deliver everyone’s new cars with swirls & scratches 😂. If you put your new car under a light it will make you cry. Anyway, being a perfectionist nutcase (it’s an illness), I have the paint corrected then I have it wrapped in PPF. After the PPF is installed I get them to apply a Ceramic or Graphene Coating to the PPF, it basically makes cleaning much easier.
IMO, PPF will always outperform Vinyl for Protection of the paint. The paint on my German car is stunning, so I only want CLEAR PPF & most people are oblivious to the fact there’s anything on my paint. It’s installed so perfectly it’s hard to see.
Besides picking QUALITY PPF, the MOST IMPORTANT Factor for achieving a quality result is by looking for the BEST INSTALLER you can afford. Some installers will hand cut the PPF & will do that on your vehicle & actually run sharp blades across your paintwork. AVOID THAT INSTALLER AT ALL COSTS! Seriously, my friend’s Porsche was destroyed by this method. My installer paid a fortune for a plotting machine (I think it’s called). Basically he types the Make & Model of the vehicle into his computer & selects what panel he wants to put PPF on & prints it out, automatically cut to the finest detail. The PPF gets installed in an Airconditioned / Filtered warehouse, many hours are taken to attach it perfectly, it gets wrapped around all the edges on places like doors & bonnets so it finishes on the inside but some areas it’s not possible so may finish at the edge of a panel.
I put it everywhere, including headlights & they now have a new PPF for windscreens.
PPF also comes in Textures & Colours but nowhere near as many options as Vinyl. Vinyl definitely has more colour options.
I PPF everything now, I do my cars, bikes & I will be doing my new Troopy when I get it.
Not long after I had my new car done I was actually out taking photos of it in a park & a bird skidded across the bonnet……sliding as he went & I could see a scratch about 4-500mm right across the bonnet. A friend that was there nearly died when he saw the scratch. We stood there & finished our Coffee & it was a hot Sunny day & within 20 minutes the scratch had healed itself. (100% gone). Once a year I get a professional maintenance detail done on it, other than that I just wash it myself. My car at 18 months old actually looks better than the day I left the dealership with it, it’s completely unmarked with 14,000 rural km in it.
The quality PPF comes with a 10 year warranty & the cost of having it installed will vary depending on how much time they spend doing it, they’re skill level etc. You could pay as much as $10,000 for a full car. I buy cars, bikes, 4x4’s to use but Im also fussy, PPF gives me confidence just to do what I want to do & I do it knowing that PPF probably has me covered. It has its limitations, for example it won’t stop car park dings 😂 OR if you dragged a huge dead branch down the side of your 4x4 you may puncture or rip the PPF but that may just prevent paint damage (acts as a sacrificial layer). The other thing I like about it is it keeps bird droppings, sap & other crap that can etch into your vehicles paint off it BUT to be fair Vinyl will also do that. The other thing I like about PPF is if you are touring for months on end, you can give your vehicle a wash using minimum water (& microfibre cloths) & do it without fear of scratching your paintwork up & if you put light scratches in the PPF, you can heal it by parking it in the hot sun or by using a ladies hairdryer on the scratch. When I was doing a lap of Australia I gave my vehicle a quick spruce up in the bush, some guy even yelled at me to stop telling me I’d be ruining my paint 😂. I saw him the next day inspecting my clean truck, scratching his head perplexed by the fact it was spotless & there was no swirl marks, makes life very easy imo. 👍
I know Andrew likes his Vinyl and each to their own but it won’t protect the paint as well as PPF does in some situations. But the PPF doesn’t have as many colour options to change the entire appearance of your ride the way vinyl will.
I’m not an expert, just an end user and many people wrap vehicles keep them a few years & sell them with the wrap on…..the proof in the pudding is when the Vinyl is removed, that’s when you get to see if it really protected your car or not.
I think you can see from Andrews builds he has chosen a quality installer, a crap install & whether you go Vinyl or PPF you will either be pulling it off or it will be coming off within a year or two, a complete waste of time & money imo.

@@tg7670 Wow, how exciting. I wish I could help you out mate but I don’t know an installer in Sydney. I will leave it at that unless you want a few pointers off me.
I would like to point out that PPF is NOT without fault. It can get damaged, if your cutting new tracks through the scrub you could tear it beyond repair.
I actually had to replace a section of my PPF after a nasty incident, the PPF was destroyed but it prevented panel damage & as it was someone else’s negligence I hit them up for it & their insurance paid out……for me it just meant my POF was removed on that panel, it was cleaned, reapplied & then the Graphene was coated on top & it was back to 100%.

@@4xoverland That is a shame, I found that video to be very informative, I think I’ve watched it at least 5 - 6 times. I think it would make for great content, especially if you compare it to what your previous 70 series touring builds ended up costing and compare the different set ups and what brought you to pay more or less for certain items since your last builds. At least then people can pick out what parts of your builds are financially feasible for their own applications. No one will shame you if you overspent, you’ve worked hard for it!

@4xoverland Andrew, what are your thoughts then on increasing tyre sizes from stock? Is the additional wear and speedo/odometer readings a problem? I'm contemplating a move from 265/65/17 to 265/70/17 and wondering if the slight lift and traction is actually worth it. Keep up the honest content!
That equates to 6mm of extra clearance mate. Honestly wouldn't notice any change.

I got a set of explore glazing slider windows with the guards for both mine and my wife's jeep cherokee xj. They are very nice windows.
be nice if those Gull wings had some Stainless hardware but to cater for the Aussie environment. (it didnt look stainless in video - I could be wrong)
The European environment is harsher than most of Aussie when it comes to corrosion. So I'm betting that these are well protected.

Why don't you do what I did and widen the factory steel grey wheels? Cheaper and wheels are tough.
Those egon products are massive clunky things. They might make installs easier but the space requirement is a showstopper for me. YMMV
What part of the Troopy is still original Toyota? Would it not be cheaper to buy a used troopy than a new one if your planning on doing major modifications to it? For fun, how much was the total cost of this light build?
Original items: the chassis, engine gearbox, axles, lockers, all of the drive train, all of the cooling system, all of the fuel system, all of the fuel tanks. Need I go on? Things that were changed: the front bumper, side rear windows, shock absorbers and springs, and soon wheels and tyres.

Agree Andrew that the clear view mirrors are ugly but the mirrors that come standard with the 78 & 76 are rubbish for vision IME, I’d rather the 79 mirrors, sure the vibrate a bit but at least you can see behind you.

You’ve made me fall in love with the Troopy but I’m finding it very difficult to find one in the US. Any advice on how I go about securing one or do I have to move to Australia?
The Troopy is rare in the US, and every one you will find will be 25 years old, or older.
You will have to import one from uae lhd or Australia and have it RHD. 25 years or older. A fair amount of people importing them to the US on ih8mud.

@@vincepalaa it's not incorrect as what i have stated is true though you have just added to the options. Yes they were sold in Germany previously in smaller numbers but good luck finding one from there. UAE and surrounding countries are your easiest LHD and Australia for the RHD.

With the GXL Troopy you get Front and Rear diff locks as well as power windows, cental locking and cloth seats and carpets for about $3k more. Also gives you 5 seats if you needed it, but worth getting the GXL just for the diff locks.
@@philg2468 yes i know that. I have a gxl dual cab mate. But andrew utterly guts his and i thought why not a workmate option it with diff locks and put everything else in. I see your point re $3000 value. Thats the only reason i bought the gxl. 👍

You are not the first one to ask. There are a lot of South Africans and Zimbabweans in Perth. A LOT! He is a Zimbabwean, or as he would prefer to be called, a Rhodesian. I met him that day.

WA is similar in many ways to parts of southern Africa and large numbers of Europeans from that region decided to settle here. I think they had pretty much lost confidence in a good future there for their families. We certainly know some who literally fled leaving a lot of property behind.

Sounds like you don't own a current model Troopy. It is a lot more economical than the other Toyota V8s. The only time I get 20L/100k is towing a 2.5T full height caravan into a strong headwind. Gets 10L/100k around town; 14L/100k towing a camper and 17L/100k towing the caravan. It is 20% better than the 200series I had beforehand.
