I think it's very important to take any child with autism on vacation. this helps them to see more and experience new things.

Have you every gone to Fort Wilderness at Disney to camp??? Abbey would love it!!! Plus they have golf carts you can rent and drive around the campground. There are outdoor kids movies at night, restaurants, pools, beach, soooooo much to do and lots of fun! You can tent/trailer or rent a cabin. I think the glamping aspect of it would be perfect for you guys!!! Plus Chip & Dale host the sing along before the outdoor movie! 😊👍💜

My favorite memories with my kids are when we camped like you are doing. The twins (now 22) with autism LOVE to camp. And it's so good for all of us to be in touch with nature even if we do bring along all our creature comforts. :-) Loved this video. Love your family. So beautiful all of you. Hugs.

Love this! We just got back from taking our son on his first camping trip. Our car looked just like yours. Hubby and I realized that camping with autism basically means, you bring your entire house out into the woods! We had it all from tablets to a blow up couch. Lol
I have seen the inflatable chairs and couches. I almost bought one, lol.

I know this is an "old" video, but I must say I really enjoyed it, especially knowing Abbie was included. A lot of families would not have tried this with a child of autism. I t makes me feel warm and happy that Abbie had fun with her family. You guys are the best.
I relate so hard to Abbie laying in the dirt while you're setting up the tent. People have just stopped questioning why I lay on the ground. I don't even know why I do it.
I’m so glad you’re open minded to people asking questions because some people are really offended when others ask questions about things like that. Not that there’s anything wrong with being offended, I’m sure some questions can be offensive or tiring to hear but I like that you have an open mind and instead of seeing questions as an opportunity to get angry and defensive, you use it as an opportunity to inform, educate, and raise awareness which is awesome. :)

I've played killer too, but we called it drug dealer. There was a cop and a drug dealer and the dealer had to wink or give a signal, then the person they made a deal with, announces it and the cop has to guess who the dealer was....or if you accidentally make a deal w the cop you automatically lose
Y'all have armadillos out there?! I always wanted to see one but I hear they are pretty stinky

Absolutely. All it took for us was to get out and do stuff. We always have to do things a little different and improvise but that's everyday anyway. I want Abbie to experience. We learn from experiences so I think the more the better.

You outta get some simple business card handouts for the times you might be too busy or in a hurry to engage people's questions in person, something to quickly give them info for your helpful online sites, perhaps just simple QR codes to them or specific videos you've made. You know, something that still helps but politely gets you moving when you need to.
I keep threatening to get some business cards but I haven't done it yet. I just hate designing things like that. I'm never happy with how they look.

I have 3.5 year old twin boys both were recently diagnosed with autism. We are planning on taking them camping next month. They take sleeping medicine in order to sleep. I'm wondering if you have to give Abby her medication while camping? I'm asking because it seems like camping always tires everyone out so much more than just being home. Also to be honest I'm worried about the judgment from family members with them being on medication.

I have a question for you guys. I'm autistic, and my favorite snacks aren't always healthy and at the moment I'm on a restricted diet due to health problems. Do you have any suggestions? Because of my autism, I have trouble with change, so it's not easy to change the snacks I want.
Ashii Ashii i found i had the best luck with a dietician helping me. Everything had to be gradual and i couldn't avoid eating certain things completely. It was quite complex but I could talk more with you about my experience if you have any questions or anything
YOUR BUGS ARE SO LOUD we don't have that constant buggy hiss here in the PNW :P just frogs croaking at night in the summer. Did you guys ever find a swimsuit for Abigail that she couldn't just shimmy out of?
We take all your back pk stuff with a tent cooler and my 30.6 a must have but we don't do city camping we out in the woods woods ....
my 3 year old son has autism and is a runner. I'm terrified to take him camping because I'm afraid he'll escape while we sleep and wonder off in the woods. i want so bad for him to experience camping but not sure how to keep him safe when it comes time to sleep in the tent.
Heather s maybe bring one of those little locks that have a keyhole at the bottom and (if your tent has the double zippers) put the lock on both the zippers at night so he won't sneak out.

Whoah you guys are some serious campers. I may have liked it if the first time I ever went in high school our tent didn't have a hole in it. Then. it. rained. Never again lol You're essentials are really fun for me though I always like to be prepared you guys got it down. Love that the girl asked questions everyone should be like that. You haven't camped since highschool?! You don't know what you're missing. The coffee tastes better, the food is fantastic with just the smallest hint of wood smoke, you sleep under the stars listening to all of the night critters moving through the woods, it's fantastic. IKR, Abbie and the smore...have you ever seen so much sticky joy?

What did u do to ensure Abby didn't run at night while u slept?
Priscilla is a VERY light sleeper so we put her next to the door. We also connected the zipper tabs so she couldn't get it open.
FatheringAutism how did u connect them. Like what material?
+Holly James They have zipper pulls on the end of the zippers that coincidentally clipped into each other nicely. I think we will use a carabiner in the future because she hasn't figured out how to open those yet. I even thought about using a luggage lock and put a key around everyone's wrist but it would probably be overkill. She's never tried to escape out of the tent so it's not much of an issue.
