It's really touching how most of gamedevs fell the same way, its like something is connecting all of us, and to see all of those content creators talking about those feelings is just heartwarming, it makes me fell a misterious pleasure to do what i do, it's just beautiful
At first, I was thinking: “huh never happened to me” but the more you talked, the more it creeped in and then I was like “damn... yeah, that feeling... i know it.” Thanks so much for sharing this, it really helps! Keep up the great work! 👌
I'd like to add sometime else: try to make something unique, but keep in mind that there's nothing wrong to copy or take inspiration from an existing genre and put your own twist on it :D
You're absolutely right! I'm not saying you shouldn't copy or be inspired, but that you should make games in genres that inspire you. I know some people that hate the games they make and they only do it to make a quick buck.
This made me motivated. I’m currently working on a project in my spare time (while studying game dev at school) and the project I chose I am having a lot of fun with. I’m excited to see what I can create!
Great moral for all art in general imo. Focus on what you feel or care about, don't make choices JUST because of a general audience, listening to your audience is important but don't make something you wouldn't be happy with just for an audience. Great vid
I needed this words of encouragement for so long since I had many prototypes without finishing them since I was trying hard more on what people would like to play rather than just make something I really like, I really got inspired by your work and by your experiences through out the process of you making games!!!! Thanks my dude!!!
This video made me discover your channel a while back and it's one of my favorite "gamejam-primer-watch" I like coming back to it, like today, while my head is starting to spark in anticipation for Ludum Dare next week! I love making games, but too often I fall in that self inflicted decision paralysis because I over think it and think too "commercially" about my game making. Working in the industry does make you think a bit like that over time and slowly kills the magic you have when you're still first learning to make games. Hunting that spark back; if that's even possible! anyways, love the channel! Keep up the inspiring work!
A brilliant and encouraging little story. Congrats on the success, dude! It'd be interesting to hear how the sales went after a few more months. We hear precious little info like that about pay-what-you-want games.
your content is amazing and honestly i love how you talk and tackle problems that every gamedev has at some point like tryharding scape creep ecs. Youre great!
This is amazing, I'm just freshly starting out on my journey and definetely thought about taking shortcuts yesterday. As in make it so it takes less time to create and publish fast. But I can just take my time polishing it instead. By the way this game looks amazing. Goodjob making at making this

this is a really great advice. I decide follow my dream of becoming a indie dev after the pandemic, it's not an easy task, everything is on hold, job, releationships... but follow this dream is helping a lot!
I'm so glad this little gem of a video appeared on my timeline when I opened up UA-cam tonight. I know this is a old video and probably won't see this comment. But I'm glad I bumped into this video and the talk. I'm in my early 30's slowly learning how to gamedev myself. I chose Game Maker studio 2 for my game engine to learn to start off with something simple. I truly needed to hear this. I am definitely going to stay motivated on getting my game design off the ground. Thanks for the motivation. I do love the gamedev community here so welcoming. :)
I 100% second this message. I spent 11 months developing a game with two friends, a student project that started in a game jam. I just really like challenging games and platformers, difficult games like Celeste and Hollow Knight do inspire me a lot, and I just wanted to make one so much! We launched it on Steam on 30th July of last year, and we got noticed by a Polish studio that ported and published our game on the Switch. Now here we are, with our little student project on the Switch, getting much more attention than we ever dreamed of getting!
@@Goodgis It's called Charge Kid. A couple of small channels made a few let's play videos on it so far, it's very challenging. You might find my tweets or the publisher's tweets about it too if you google it. Again, available on the eshop, steam and itch.io as well.

Very accurate. Chasing trends or the idea of "success", rather than self expression, is likely to be a road to failure. You won't have the creativity to create a good game You won't have the determination to finish it
The lesson on this video is pretty good, and it doesn’t just apply to coding. Trust me, I know that from experience. Goodgis (dunno if I can call you Mark haha), this video can be 3 years old already, but it resonates with me today. At the beginning of this year, I tried (twice) to make a game about breaking blocks on the phone, like something to "smash" your screen and get points (the second iteration was more doing gestures tho). I tried because people love small dumb phone games that you just open and play quickly (me included), and this way I could make a hit or at least a good sum of money with ads (and I hate ads in games, look how far we go sometimes for money ugh). Those were some of the most miserable months in game development I had so far. I ditched the ideas and started more interesting projects. I still feel I threw time away but at the same time, I keep repeating to myself that I learned a lot at that time. I am still trying to succeed in making games, trying to make something final and launch (and also sell it, not saying much, but have been unemployed for almost 2 years now heh).
