🚲 The best way to cycle from Hackney to Canary Wharf
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- You can cycle from Hackney in north east London to Canary Wharf in east London, entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes. #londonlovescycling
The route is 7.6m long (4.7 miles) and makes use of the London Fields LTN, Regent's Canal, Mile End Park, and part of Cycleway 3.

As someone who cycles in a very hilly Plymouth, I'm incredibly envious of that infrastructure!
I get excited when a bike lane full of debris appears, can't imagine what a proper Cycleway must be like!
we're increasingly lucky! I think cycling has huge potential in places the size of Plymouth - especially with ebikes. if anything it makes more sense in medium sized cities rather than massive places because you could in theory get around the whole place in 15 minutes
@@Londoncycleroutes You're exactly on the money - I use an ebike to get to work now.
I used to drive but parking was a pain, it's expensive, and it could take somewhere between 12 and 40 minutes.
Whereas on the bike it costs 2 pence to fill the battery, takes 15-18 minutes, and keeps me active!
@@matthewcornfield2150 e-bikes will be absolutely revolutionary for a lot of people I think!
I agree about avoiding Regents Canal. Apart from that, this is a good route. I always wanted to ride over Mile End Park Bridge. I made 100 👍🏾
The park bridge honestly blew my mind when I realised it was a bridge
Great video! Tower Hamlets council has always confused me as to why it's so pro-car/anti-cycling, especially given the low car ownership and high population density of the borough
the whole system in London is silly. Districts shouldnt be able to veto things like that in the first place
It’s very ridiculous - a mix of opportunism (wedge issue with TH labour) and the party running it having lots of mini cab drivers in it
@@Londoncycleroutes makes more sense, the cabbies absolutely hate anything to do with pedestrianisation and cycling, despite the fact that less cars being used would mean theyd see a raise in their trade and less traffic to deal with
It’s Lutfur Rahman. He is opportunistically ant-cycling to get the support of mini-cab drivers.
Let's just say that all social conservativism is despicable, regardless of whether it's coming from a majority. Further, Rahman is a convicted criminal (and should have been barred from the political system)
Salmon Lane can be a nightmare with drivers using it as a cut-through route to Stepney and Whitechapel. A lot of those back roads can be busy during school runs and prayer times as well.
An alternative option to Salmon Lane, and avoiding rat-running down Three Colt Street when there are tailbacks on Commercial Road especially if there are works happening or one of the Rotherhithe/Limehouse Link/Blackwall tunnels is closed, is to stay on or rejoin the canal path to Limehouse Basin, follow Basin Approach, then over the bridge and through Ropemakers Field to join the CS3.
A slower and little less direct, but a more pleasant and traffic-free way to do it. Also sets up nicely for anyone wanting to take the Thames Path route to Canary Wharf/South Quay/Isle of Dogs via Dunbar Wharf.
Yes I sort of wish I had gone that way - is there a step free way? I seem to remember having to dismount around the Limehouse basin but I might be thinking of another bit
@@Londoncycleroutes There are some stairs as you come off the canal, but there's also a ramp just past it. You can see in this photo. @@Londoncycleroutes You could have continued on Three Colts Lane and onto Canary Riverside. Then up the stairs or take the lift to West Ferry Circus and straight on to Canary Wharf DLR. Don't expect any improvements in Tower Hamlets cycling infrastructure anytime soon, the administration (unlike the previous administration) are anti cycling. Just to be pedantic, Hackney is in east London, not north-east London!
@@mrjoneseastend I used to go that way along the riverside but I prefer to avoid the stairs these days
And I was about to write an angry comment "What do you mean Victoria Park shuts at dusk? You can always use the Grove Road." and then you said just that :-) I used to live close to Victoria Park, it is one of the best areas to cycle IMHO. Oh, and riding along the Mile End green is a treat, too.
there was supposed to be a bus gate on Grove Road by now which would have been amazing but TH's new council wasn't keen... one day
never realised that these places were so close!
Yeah it really creeps up on you!
Hooray- a ride that starts in my end of town !
Got there eventually haha
Loved it, as always. It's not just the cycling, it's the visits to London, seeing parts depicted that were just lines on a map prior. That's was a close call @5:10 / 15:38 !
haha yes it was quite an introduction to the canal path!
I have been cycling the Regents Canal for almost 20yrs (Limehouse to Angel). I witnessed the growing populous of usage on the canal towpath and in summer its uncycleable. I avoid completely now unless I am walking it.
yeah I wondered if I was imagining it... but in the 12 years I've been cycling in London it's definitely got a lot busier. it used to be the best way to go I think often - but there are way more people on it now and also just better alternative routes for large parts of it
I got pushed into the Regents Canal once, cycling home from work. They were hiding behind a wall and suddenly ran at me from the side. Very scary, and some passers-by helped fish me and my bike out. Luckily it was summer as I then had to cycle another 5 miles home soaking wet. Those cobbles on teh green bridge path have been there ever since the bridge was opened. Stupid stupid stupid. Oh, yes. Salmon Lane is usually busy in my experience.
That’s bizarre! Sorry to hear that. Were they pranksters or what? Robbery?
@@Londoncycleroutes I suppose they could be described as "pranksters" but I would call them violent criminals! From time to time, there have been spates of such crimes.
I commute daily cycling on Regents canal and I love it! Though it is getting busier after work now as the weather is improving in spring.
That’s good! Do you find there are fewer pedestrians at commuting time? That definitely used to be the case
@@Londoncycleroutes There are still a fair few pedestrians during commuting hrs but fewer big groups of people - which is always the most tricky to navigate.
Cool! I would like to see what route you would take from stratford to canary wharf, or even maybe to greenwich :)
I can def do Stratford to Canary Wharf!
Nice 👍
Thanks for watching as always!
Another fab video. Having done most of this I agree the towpaths are not much fun, but the park section is great.
Yeah I didn’t really want to use it but there’s not really a good alternative!
Coming from south east London (across Greenwich foot tunnel), this is a frequent route I make to get to hackney. It is frustrating with the canal sections and not something I enjoy using at night at all. I quite like Mile End park though in the day it’s a nice part of the route
yeah it's not ideal - we need C37!
After the last bit of the canal, I prefer to cycle around Limehouse Basin, then Ropemaker’s Park which pops you out onto the riverside path that leads you to Westferry Circus. I can send you my route later in the week if helpful.
yeah that does make sense, I used to go that way quite a lot. the stairs/lift is a bit of an issue for a video but avoiding salmon lane is good
@@Londoncycleroutes I just prefer to avoid the messy part through the estate and across Commercial Rd. That bit ruins an otherwise pleasant ride.
10:50 reminds me of the Paris-Roubaix! 😅
Haha yes there is some similarity
My wife informs me that on Saturday mornings Park Run use the cycle path in mile end park so it's really difficult to cycle (even very very slowly) on the cycle path without getting grumpy runners tutting at you
But on the other hand salmon lane is usually fairly quiet 😊
Good local knowledge!
That’s a relief!
FYI, Hertsmere road is pronounced like Hearts-meer, names after the area in hertfordshire
Cheers
Maybe one day we can see East Croydon to Canary Wharf 😬🙏🏼
I'll put it on my list, very tricky one though!
Thank you! I find it very hard to find a good route, especially at the beginning when the National Cycle Rte 21 goes through South Norwood Country Park, which has a sandy surface, some people let there dogs run freely, and after the rain it’s often full of puddles. 🤷🏻♂️

Cheers Isaac, keep up the great work
Likewise, ad much as the view at the canal when cycling is nice, the pedestrian and the risk of being pushed to the water are the things that I anxiously think though never happened.
The latter is really unlikely imo! But pedestrians being in the way is an issue
I wish those right turn waiting areas were used more.
Totally agree, it made it feel totally safe - good solution when the streets don’t line up properly
Thanks
Thanks very much very kind!
Thanks for another great video Jon! I would like to ask, how do you know whether cycling is permitted on certain pedestrian routes? There is not always one of those blue signs. I’ve found some good back routes through housing estates that have no gate barriers, for example, but still don’t know for sure if that’s allowed. Thanks.
It’s often hard to tell- especially on estates. When it’s genuinely ambiguous my approach is to be realistic about it and only do it if it feels OK for everyone involved. If something looks more like a pavement alongside a road it’s probably not ok for cycling, if it’s a path it might be OK. You could check open cycle map which is pretty good for this kind of thing, but it’s not infaliable
Great videos! Can I ask what camera you use for recording? Do you use an action camera like GoPro?
Yep it’s a GoPro Hero 11 on the latest videos
@@Londoncycleroutes Thanks for the quick reply. I cycle a lot in central London and, thanks to your videos, learned a lot of new/better routes. Not to mention the relaxed and entertaining virtual cycling experiences!
Thank you for these videos!
My wife and I are visiting London this summer and I would love to implement one of your rides into our trip.
I am curious, do you often commute in the rain, or take the tube in wet weather? Thanks again!
amazing, I hope it's a good trip! I do cycle in the rain sometimes yes, though it actually rains quite a bit less here than you might think. the chance of it raining at 9am on a weekday is pretty small, even if the chance of it raining on any given day is reasonably high. I've only got really soaked a couple of times in years of cycling (and own a raincoat). I do use the tube, buses, walk etc plenty but my commute to work is usually by bike
@@Londoncycleroutes If it does rain, there are sections of the tube where bikes are allowed off peak. See this very handy map of Transport for London rail and tube lines where bikes are carried: content.tfl.gov.uk/cycles-on-the-tfl-network-november-2022.pdf You will note the Elizabeth Line takes bikes and not shown on the map is Thameslink which also takes bikes right through the centre from say Cambridge to Brighton. I've done a ride getting Thameslink to Farringdon, the Elizabeth Line to Heathrow and then started my ride on the cycle path right outside Terminal 5!
I don't commute but enjoy canal paths but delivery riders on ebikes tend to race along them with a sense of entitlement 😢
yeah its not ideal!
i have done it from limehouse to camden, the canal is not a good way for speed and it is too crowded , too many people walking their dogs. but if you just go for a sunday rides, it is okay.
Yeah the dogs on leads blocking the path can definitely be an issue
I know there’s less options but would love to see some routes in west
I’d like to do more! Check out the map of all the videos for some if you haven’t already
Awesome, I haven't seen this@@Londoncycleroutes
Tfl are also waiting for thames water to do works on burdett road before c37
Good to know! Thames water love digging things up
Just a word of warning for those at night along the canal with expensive bikes.
There was a spate of muggings reported a few years ago - Is it still a thing?
@@Londoncycleroutes couple of Bromptons have been taken along that bit of the canal back in the winter
I would probably avoid riding along Regents Canal, as I've walked along bits of it in the past and have never seen a single thing to help people climb out of the canal, if they fall into it.
I’ve not seen anyone fall in before but there’s always a risk!
In places, there are actually ramps that were designed to allow horses to get out when they fell in!
►♪♫♥thx!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Hee hee. Hertsmere is pronounced Hartsmere. Like the borough in Herts.
Thank you!
tower hamlets council need to get their anti-bike centric mentality in the bin where it belongs.
Strongly agree!
Unfortunately, that’s the platform the crooked (I believe that’s allowed as he was convicted, of election fraud) mayor was elected on.
What bothers me is that they then had a “consultation” and decided to completely ignore it. Yet, I don’t see anyone pursuing this over there. All of the alternatives at the time of the election (while I was resident in TH) were mealy-mouthed on their stance “we don’t feel there was a proper consultation….” Well, now there has been: do something!!!
