I’ve found certain other condiment jar lids fit Mason jars, too, not for canning, but for storage. You can also buy plastic lids to replace the ring & seal once you open a jar of jam, relish or other things that will be opened multiple times. 😊
I love the history lesson! I like finding out background stories about different things! It was so nice of Ball to keep his name on the jars as a tribute to him! ❤️ So many great ideas for use of these jars! Thank you! 😊❤️
Somehow, I manage to find vintage and antique Mason jars at ridiculous low prices at yard sales, thrift stores, and flea markets. I even found a bunch of old green ones in the woods on my property where there was an old homestead. My favorite decoration with a Mason jar is not really functional except for a good laugh. I took a Mason jar that is about 120 years old. (I'm particularly protective over this particular jar.) I made a vintage looking label for it that says "Brilliant Ideas." Then I filled it with all shapes and size light bulbs. I save weird things like blown vintage Christmas lights and old looking blown bulbs. Then I put a vintage lacey handkerchief between the lid and the ring. I keep my "Brilliant Ideas" jar on my kitchen window sill just in case I ever need one.😁
So many wonderful uses for the mason jar! Definitely would like to see some decoupaging of a jar! Thanks for sharing Norrine! And thanks for the history lesson! Very interesting! 💜
Love the history behind the jars. I am an alumnus of Ball State University funded by the Ball Family in Muncie, Indiana. I knew about their Ball glass jars. Nice to know they recognize the legacy of John Landis Mason by printing his name on their jars.
I no longer use plastic containers for my food. I was smelling and tasting plastic. I only use mason jars now. Pure glass. No after taste in my food. The lids are made of bamboo for display. Plus it's easy to see what I have.
So sad Mr Mason died penniless, but glad Ball still puts his name on their jars. I’d love to see gift ideas with recipes to go in decorated (or not) Mason jars. Since I know you don’t like to cook I know you’d recommend ones that are easy-peasy!
I picked up two of these jars as the local hobby store along with a bag of colored glass rocks and made door stops with them. Cheap, easy, and because I don't mistreat them, long lived. They have done their duty in my home for over 20 years.
What a great idea. I filled the bottom of mason jars with colored glass drops and made them into solar lights, using inexpensive solar path lights from Walmart. I wired the jars and hung them using coated chain.
I have 2 jar dispensers in the bathroom for moisturizing soap and antibacterial soap at the sink. Much easier to refill from the economical bulk container and clean the outside weekly. I also use them for dried beans in the pantry that are sold in plastic bags. Muchveasier to store. And widemouth ones are great for portioning leftovers for reheating. I love the craft ideas, especially making your own lids from repurposed items. Great video.
You and your videos are so professional, well thought out and full of information. Thank you and hello from Murfreesboro Tennessee. I just found your site two weeks ago, you have a new fan.
The history lesson was nice, I have never taken the time to check it out. I didn’t know there was an upside down jar. Yes I would like to see you do a decoupage jar! ~Anna~
I love that you included the history of mason jars. I keep and reuse certain mason and other wide mouth jars in large and small sizes in my kitchen and around the house for storage of small items. My favorites are giant two-quart jars that I bought especially for rice, pasta, oats/grains, nuts/snacks, and cereal. My favorite use of mason jars is in my garden. I have a dozen or so mason jars converted into solar lights. I cut 3mm clear plastic to fit inside the ring lid and use waterproof sealer to attach an inexpensive solar path light to the lid and then to seal it to the ring lid. I painted some of the lids and added colorful glass drops to some of the jars. They sit in sunny beds or hang on shepherds' hooks. The total cost is maybe $3.00 a jar and they are so pretty.
Hello Norrine! Love to you and your family (especially your dad). Hope you're having a wonderful day. I am loving all these ideas and enjoyed the history of the jars. Would also love to see you do some of the jar ideas on camera, like the patio lights, for example. It's good to see you back. You are always in my prayers, my friend. Blessings - Judith 🎭🎵
I’d love to see you decoupage a Mason jar as well as the fairy lights! My hubby spray painted some jars for me for tissues, and had a hard time not getting drips in the paint.
Norrine, my favorite DIY-er… It’s good to have you back❣️❣️❣️. I’ve missed you. Another great video 😊 Luv this Mason jar video AND the history lesson. Information like always interesting to me. Hugs❣️ If you ever come to Florida’s Treasure Coast, we have a guest room☺️☺️☺️
For food or other storage the plastic lids from mayonnaise fit canning jars quite well and are usually airtight. Some lids from peanut butter will also fit. I prefer free but you can also purchase "freezer" or "canister" lids. A small piece of hardware cloth or poultry mesh cut to fit into a canning ring can add support for a floral display.
@The Crafty Organizer clean the jar with soap and water then before you apply napkin wipe area with alcohol and allow to dry. Don't touch it after you apply it. Let it dry completely. Then apply a second coat to seal it. You got this. Just remember not to touch it while it's wet, it's a sticky mess.
I appreciate the history lesson about John Mason and the Ball brothers. I had no idea! I would love to see how you decoupage a jar. Thanks, Noreen, see you next time!❤
Excellent video Norrine‼️👍 I especially love that you went above and beyond by providing the history on Mason jars! I love learning something new every day! 😊 It’s amazing how many uses there are for these incredible lil jars. TYFS❣️😊💜💜💜
You hit my "obsession"💙😍....glass jars!!! I love especially Mason jars...blue is my favorite right now. I have a shelf over my kitchen sink across my window decked out in cool jars and glass pieces! Love-Love-Love them! I thrift most of mine and use larger ones in my pantry for dried goods (four, sugar, rice, beans, oatmeal, etc)! There are endless possibilites with Mason jars!!! 😍

I used to can when I had a young family. I grew up in a Midwest rural area where many canned. We used Ball and Kerr jars I think. I also loved the history lesson! 😊
I also learned how to can veggies with my Mama. She was one of 16 children and learned to make biscuits from scratch. She was also a seamstress and quilter. Her Mama embroidered on muslin cloth and made a quilt for me. It is one of my most treasured things. I miss her so much, but she lived to be 85 and lived with us the last few years. So many wonderful memories.
Such a wonderful history lesson👏👏👏, thank you for your time you put into it! I’ve always loved canning and it’s accessories, we have even decorated our home in the way of light fixtures with the blue ones; made by my husband🥰. I’m so blessed to have him!!! Yes on the decoupage lesson OR whatever else you come up with. ❤️😀

Hello Norrine! So good to see you! 😊 Loved the history re: Mason Jars. I love learning new tidbits. Great ideas you have, TYFS. Take care and see you soon! BTW you're looking fabulous! 🤗
I had a jar lid that rusted due to what was in it. I traced around it on the flat side of a milk jug and cut it out. I use that with the ring rather than the metal lid and don’t have to worry about it rusting again. You can also cut a lid of plastic canvas to use for things you want to shake out.
I like the rusty. Look and keep using them but to get them open easily I run a little Vaseline around the jar. Also works if you have something in them that is sticky
I’ve painted jars with a mix of mod podge and paint, if I want to make a design I use fabric puffy paint first and then paint over it. It’s great for using up puffy paint that is in those neon colours that don’t get used up and it a little more controllable than hot glue. I’ve also done a glass ramekin with glitter and mod podge on the inside and used it to store my rings.
Great ideas! I use cheese shaker jars for my twine. I paint the lid blue and use one of the holes to thread the twine through. I also have some mason jars to put some of my crafting supplies in. I will be using the store technique from one of your previous videos to pretty up my craft room.
You can buy them that way, but it's not hard to DIY by making a small hole in the lid, and feeding the light socket through the hole and then screwing in the bulb after wards. I may do a video on it!!!
Yes, please, on the decoupaged jars! I'd love to know which kinds of decoupage glue dries hard and non-sticky, since I've had acrylic paints and glues alike be kind of sticky when the project is finished. Will the jars need to be varnished?
Did you know a Parmesan shaker lid will fit on a regular canning jar?
