In this video, I talk about Friends Season 2 Episode 3's "The One Where Mr. Heckles Dies". In this episode, the gang inherit the possessions of their late eccentric neighbour, Mr. Heckles. The focus of the episode is on Chandler and his fear that he will end up alone, just like Mr. Heckles. This episode has regained popularity online after the passing of talented actor Matthew Perry. Many have drawn parallels between Chandler's character in this episode, and Matthew Perry's personal struggles. I discuss this parallel, along with a breakdown of the episode in this video.

As I've aged, I've cried less and less because you get used to sad, painful losses. When I heard about Matthew Perry passing; I burst into tears. My daughter was home for a visit and was just shocked, knowing her Mom doesn't cry much anymore. This just hit like I lost a friend. I had my own 7 year addiction to opiates after a failed back surgery. I dont know why I continued taking them since I continued being in pain so when the discussion of stopping them came up with my doctor; I was frightened. How would I cope? Would I even be able to function? I had Matthew's book sitting on a shelf and as i looked at it i thought, if he can do it numerous times, surely I can do it once! I have been off opiates for quite some time and it prompted me to also quit smoking as well. I always wanted to be able to thank him for giving me that hope and strength but I didn't know how....sad that I can never let him know now how he was my "friend" and he didn't even know it.
Bless you. Time heals. You will laugh again
❤️
Matthew would be proud of you. ❤
He’s all around us xox
God bless you on your journey. I know Matty would be so proud to be your friend.
Matthew was awesome. I don’t usually get sad about celebrities who die.
Robin Williams, Heath Ledger and Matthew Perry are the ones who really hurt.
Heath, gosh i miss him. He surely was talented. :( well, they all were. But Heath's hit the hardest.
@@KittyLovesGloversame. Because I was in my early 30’s then and he was only 28. I’m 46 now. Can’t believe it was that long ago!😢
Add Lisa Marie Presley to that list, and I'd pick the same ones.
I can remember exactly what I was doing when I heard Elvis died. I was a teenager then.
I was really sad when David Bowie passed in 2016. For me, him and Matthew were the most devastating celebrity deaths I've had to find out about.
@@yetigamer905 yeah. I didn’t realize until after he passed that’s why his album even a little darker for him.
The episode that Matthew Perry made his own by the realisation of how alike he and Mr Heckles were but also because of the kindness, compassion and understanding he ultimately viewed Mr Heckles with.
The day Matthew Perry died I was in Barnes & Noble trying to buy his newly released book-not knowing he had passed away yet. I started to cry when I heard he died, because I thought about him all the time (obviously), since Friends was one of my favorite shows, and I too suffer from addiction & really related to Matthew . I’m 59 years old, & his death saddened & frightened me.
I hope you did purchase Matthew’s book … and will remember him when you’re tempted to use. He wanted his legacy to be about helping other people … not “Friends.” You will then honor Matthew & better yourself. Best wishes to you!
I'm sorry hun. One person who would have been happy to help you is Matthew. You are not alone though. There are many of us out there, just waiting with open arms. Please know that & hold onto that. I am here 🙏 for you. Just look up & you will see, the best is yet to be. 🙏❤️ Stàci
Hold onto God
You have the strength within you.
As a kid when ever i was paranoid or I was having a panic attack I’d put on friends to calm me down. Chandler meant a lot to me as a character. May Matthew Perry rest in peace
It calmed me down so much I fell asleep… don’t know what that means. Haven’t for awhile. That was probably like 5 years ago before tv got too technically complicated and can’t find live tv that’s actually live on Roku. It keeps changing.
Me too
The death of Matthew Perry hits home hard as Friends grew up with us over the years. There is an even greater sense of sadness after all the trials and tribulations that a genuinely big hearted and loving individual such as Matthew went through, and all the incredible laughters that he has brought to the world, he ended up dying alone. If only there is a way for all the fans in the world to give back Matthew just 1 billionth of the joy and happiness that he has given us through his portrayal of Chandler in Friends! Thank you Matthew for showing us all your faults and frailty as a human being so that we may know that no one is perfect and that even a super star such as yourself can face incredible challenges and hardship. Thank you for being you Matthew. Godspeed.
Love to you, Marty. Rest in Peace😍
clarklu453 Your comment was so beautiful, and expresses how so many of us feel over the death of Matthew Perry. He blessed us with so many laughs and we felt like he was a friend to us. At last though he is at peace. ❤
The day the laughter died...and we were singing, Bye, bye Miss American Pie. Drove my Chevy to the levy, but the levy was dry. And good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing, "This'll be the day that I die." We love you and will forever miss you, Mathew. I will never be able to watch FRIENDS the same way again...the day the laughter died.😢😢😢
I loved Matthew Perry and I'm devastat ed he is gone. The world is sadder without Matty.
Friends has always been like a warm hug with someone genuinly asking "Are you ok?" It was and still is my comfort, no other show has been able to do that for me. Im still, all these years later so upset that it ended and even more so after losing our dear Matthew Perry, a man that helped so many people 😢
i think people watch sitcoms because they give us the fantasy we all have as adults. That you can have a tight group of friends that you always get to hang out and have fun with. They all work the same hours, they all come together in one place to spend time with each other, and have perfect work life balance
All of them were funny, but Matthew Perry as Chandler was truly the funniest of them all. R.I.P. Matthew, I will miss you!!!😢❤
I think maybe why Matthew Perry’s loss was felt by so many was because we all connected with him and his characters in so many ways. He dealt with so much and hid it for a long time. But he showed us how to find a way. He was a good man who proved we all have our flaws and weaknesses. But in that he also showed just how hard it is to be in this world alone. And that to get better we need love, compassion and understanding from those around us. But as you said in your channel, I hope he is remembered for his wins and not his losses.
Chandler was always my favorite.
Mine as well
Me too. Especially after this episode.
Me 2 in order for me it was chandler joy ross girls phoebe monica rachel
Is so very sad because Mathew died alone, no wife, no children, and was alone when it happen
You say that like it's a bad thing.
@@lefttea loser opinion
People actually sicken me. I'm so sick of people and their conspiracy theories that he'd relapsed. There's absolutely NOTHING to suggest that and its so insensitive, especially given how hard he worked to get & stay sober. Thank you for being so respectful and calling out the insensitive and disrespectful people. They aren't true fans
He appeared to have an adorable warmth about him. What do I really know?
It's ironic that this is the 2nd episode where Chandler says "I will die alone" I'm starting to wonder if he had visions of his future because these 2 occasions where he said the same thing twice is very sad 😢 rip Matthew ❤
Well, in realty, we all die alone. It is a solitary act, no matter how many people are around. How about all those military soldiers who died in all forms of combat. Many died alone.
Brother.
On a chance, me and my family watched that episode while we were re-watching friends. When I saw the title to this video I knew exactly what you were talking about. That last scene where Chandler says his farewell to Heckles, my sister said: "Goodbye, Matthew".
We are still mourning his passing so it's natural to try to keep or find something of Matthew in Chandler, he gave that amazing personification and we loved Chandler and at the same time, Matthew for giving us that. Also many read his book and he let us see his humanity and flaws but also the good man he was, so yeah, we are watching, laughing and crying his passing, and will do it many times in the following 50 years, if we live that amount of time and witness all of their passings. Many rewatch "Golden Girls" when the last one passed away, we loved her job and love her and it's a way to keep them alive in our mind and hearts. We also remember the good they did and will help their foundations if there's any to keep those aids alive.
❤❤❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤
I always cry at the end of that episode. For half a hour, you hate then love Mr heckles, then cry, when chandler, says those immortal words at the end of friends episode. 👋💕🇦🇺
'This show formed Millennials'...? No dude...GenX. And Matthew Perry was one of us, one of our best. He was my favorite. I didnt realize how much til I woke up and read he passed. I grew up with him. Read his book....its so good and now, heartbreaking. What a beautiful and talented man. Fly free, Matthew..and thank you.
RIP Mister Crazy Snakeman
HIMYM and The Simpsons name drop in the first ten seconds when talking about comfort shows, you know what’s up
I was also thinking about this episode...there r literally so many similarities it breaks ur heart.
RIP
This is the episode I was watching when I heard about Matty passing 😢 I’ll never be able to watch this one the same again 😢
The most painful episode to watch is when they got engaged..that tragic weight loss was the beginning of all .
Weight loss????
@@jaynehogue2459 Yeah when Monica yell I'm engaged I'm engaged and Chandler had faded away he got so skinny..remember?
@@jaynehogue2459 He always said when I was thin it was the pills ,when I was fat it was the booze
Thank you for your text. It brought me to tears😢. I, unfortunately have shed sooo too many tears lately. I lost both my parents,my boyfriend,my doggie & my BFF, of 38 yrs.. Tomorrow is my mom's 1 year anniversary of her death. I still cry each day, several times a day. Everyone is gone now. I'm alone & I watch "friends" everyday, multiple episodes & different time slots,. It's a time when I can finally laugh & forget the pain for while. When I found out about Matthew,(I just feel like it's ok to call him that), I couldn't believe it. Didn't believe it & I still don't want to. It 💔my heart & I have been crying about him too everyday since the terrible tragedy😢. Like u, I felt like he was a friend. My fav "friend" from the show of which is 1 of the greatest ever. It doesn't seem real & oh how I wish it wasn't. I'm a recovered alcoholic & finding out all of what he went through was just so very much. He was in recovery & wanted to help others. Amazing. I too wanted to let him know he made me laugh,he made a difference. Like the incredible cast, watching the show daily, many times, helped me to smile, laugh & to be comforted by my extended "TV friends". I went as far as to research & find his management in West Hollywood. I was going to send a💌 letter to say thank you for making me laugh & that I was proud of him for walking through the dark into the light ,of sobriety. Plus his plan to help others. I think of him everyday & wish I would have sent that letter 💌to him. (Not to say the letter would have ever reached his hands, but... I just wanted him to know how special he was & still is. I still watch "friends" everyday. I would never be able to stop, but I am sorry to say that watching it is different now. I adore the incredible cast, but knowing what happened to this remarkable man,in the prime of his new life, just saddens my❤, which is something that an actor of hîs caliber, plus the kind man that he is,(was), would never want that, I'm sure. I just bought the "people" mag ,which has his so handsome face on the cover, I have yet to read it because it will make the loss true. If that makes any sense. I want to get his new book. Then, when I am ready, I can read them & be comforted I hope, by my favorite "friend". God bless you, Staci❤
That was a considerate reflection on Friends and on Perry. I don't know if you were alive when they started filming, but you offered a mature and insightful commentary.
He is probably the only celebrity I cried for because I've been watching Friends quite a lot lately, which is also kinda weird. Chandler is the most relatable one.
Well at least he wasn't married and divorced four times like everybody else..
"Divorced men are not bad men." - Ross Geller
Four divorces, four divorces
Good one!
What are you talking about????
but he wanted a child😢
It was October 28th and I had gotten home from a costume thing, had maybe a 2 hr nap and then was randomly jolted awake for some reason. Its like I knew, because I looked at my phone and got notifs about it right away. I was known by my friends as the friends tv show obsessed gal lol. So when Matthew who played my favorite character on Friends had passed away, It really hurt and still will. I'm currently re-watching friends in his memory and already on season 6. That man deserved better
Those comparing that Bojack scene with Matthew Perry’s death must not realize that that scene is actually an “homage” to Sunset Blvd. So, it’s a REALLY bad comparison.
You wrote so many remarkable, wonderful, kind thing's about Matthew. Well written & from the ❤. Thank you for taking the time to write such in-depth feelings of the 1 & only Matthew Perry. He was larger than life to those who love & adore him as the incredible, gifted actor to the kind, selfless man he had become & one we all loved. Thank you for what you so passtionally wrote. ❤️
Thank you for reading my forever long text & knowing that it did come from my 💔heart. Thank you for taking the time to write a reply. Very kind of you & your words did not fall on deaf ears. Your words mean something to me & it helps to make me feel like I am not alone. Your thoughtfulness brings tears to my eyes. I have always believed, but now I know that Angel's are everywhere. When u least expect it & when you need it the most. Thank you for putting a little patch on the hole in my ❤️. Bless you angel. Be safe & well. Stàci 🌷
it dont know if you remember , but the reason joey and chandler became roomates , it beccause mr heckles
Thought about the end of this episode (Chandler saying goodbye) when I heard about Matthew's passing.
Janice being pregnant somewhat echoes with something Matthew talks about in his book.
Definitely this episode has a new meaning today.
(You might want to update the pic of the video, "hurts")
What’s crazy Dylan Doodle is, much of Mr.Heckles’s items would’ve been worth a lot of money. Occasionally, I used to watch “Antiques Roadshow” and I noticed ‘ugly’ items were worth quite a tiff money.
I thought also on the episode when he is obssesed with taking bubble baths
This video was so nice. Thank you.
It’s terrible what happened to Matthew especially with him being sober for so long. It just shows that addiction isn’t only there while you’re still on a substance even after years of sobriety he still went back due to an addiction and unfortunately it just didn’t go the same way it used to
Great tribute for my favorite Friend. Miss you Matty.
You win. I subscribed. I have the same crazy sense of humor, and I am the one everyone wanted to go to lunch with, and I mean EVERYONE I worked with. Where ya going to lunch? Oh Ok! 2 cars leave the parking lot, service department guys and the office staff. Hey! It wasn't my fault that a service tech tossed a chicken bone and it bounced off his target and landed in the lap of our competitors daughter!. My comptroller told us to behave so before lunch, we went into her office with a stick it note over our work tops. LOL! However, back to the video. Very well made and heartfelt. I am teary eyed while I write this because, I does resonate that he did, in fact, die alone. Loved VERY much by his family and friends, and by us fans! I watched every episode of The Odd Couple. Whoever played the neatnik sunk that show! Not good casting but Matthew was spot on in that role! They needed a David Hyde Pierce for crying out loud! That show would have broken the ceiling it would have darted up so fast.
Damn dylan dropped another banger great job
Donkey Kong country theme song in the background 😂
He was my favorite friends character, and he died on my birthday... god rest his soul
Great video
Thank you :)
that’s so sad the Matty wanted to live a happy life with kids and a good wife. And in the show he thought he was gonna end up alone which he did in real life. But Matty is finally at peace and doesn’t have to fight no more. Rest Matty, you’ve always made my day;(
"Move into the light Chandler".
He was so talented that it's insane.
Love chandler forever!❤
Thanks for making me laugh !
Yes. This does hit home.
I cried when I heard Matthew had passed away. I was a big fan of FRIENDS. You're up in heaven now. God bless you Matty. Thanks for the laughter. Thank you to the other cast members who all, as a group, made me laugh. Xxx😢😅
RIP Matthew ☹️
When my best friend/sister-in-law passed away a couple of months ago the only thing that kept me sane was “Friends.” I was able to even laugh.
No laugh tracks, each audience had 500 people in its studio audience.
This show was perfectly cast.
Chandler brought the Joy to Friends.
my favorite friend
Crazy to think they in this episode Chandler (Matthew Perry) has the good bye Mr. Heckles, we'll try to keep it down moment, meanwhile he actually died in real life. RIP Matthew Perry. 🙏🙏😔
Well done❤
Thank you :)
Maybe the real friends was the friends we made along the way 🥸
he was so functional, i wasn't, lost everything, he was so good and handsome, my favorite 'friend'
I agree it's gonna be a hard episode to watch an the last episode of friends will be too everyone will be crying 😭 I know I have over Mathew Perry
I am gonna die alone
When I heard the news of Matthew Perry's passing I immediately thought of this episode, ending just was so sad.
This is Andre Braugher for me, his death made an impact, Rest in piece Captain Holt
I love chandler so so much. When I heard Mathew passed I burst I other tears. I can't watch that one episode anymore. It breaks my heart. I'm a gen z but I am so attached to this show. I still watch it and I love it sm. When Mathew passed it broke me. I'm still so saddned by it. I miss you Mathew. Rest in piece Mathew
R.I.P MATTHEW PERRY YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE AND WILL BE HUGELY MISSED XO
Chandler Bing was my favourite character in Friends too. RIP Matthew.
The scene where Chandler isn't in the coffee shop in one of the later seasons also hasn't aged well due to Matthew's passing
I read a comment on a video about an old lady complaining about something to her neighbor because in reality she was lonely ... 😢
Matthew Perry and Chandler Bing were be always in our hearts! ❤
Hey may I ask what effect was used for the video from the series?
If you’re asking what effects I used on the friends footage, I used Austin Newmans retro look preset pack for premiere pro. It’s free to download
My favorite was/is Rachael
Sadly he died the opposite to his show without ever having got married or had kids😭
Getting married and having kids is definitely not the "end all." Just the opposite. I know there are societal pressures of all kinds and this is one that comes up often. The sadness was his history of addiction, not the fact that he never married or had kids. I assume you are married and have kids. Aah! My condolences 😢
@@gloryB-3 But he wanted a wife and kids in real life tho. He said it in interviews that he envied the character Chandler who was able to get married.
@@regularity2556 I doubt it. What is your source? From the book/s he wrote? If interviews, what network or cable channel? And if that's your source, you know it's the spin room.
@@regularity2556 I am sure he would have gotten married and had kids, if he lived longer. He even said himself that he ended his relationships, maybe out of fear of getting married and having kids, and all the troubles and complications that brings, including abandonment.
I heard 5 Nintendo tunes in this, including.....
1. Funky Stadium - Mario Kart Wii
2. Forest Interlude - Donkey Kong County 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
3. World Map - Donkey Kong Country (1994)
4. To The Gateway - Super Mario Galaxy
5. DK Summit - Mario Kart Wii
Simian Segue is number three. Glad someone noticed the music choices tho‼️
@DylanDoodle In your next video, can you put music from Super Smash Bros Melee and Brawl? They got the best ones.
@@dannytallman3022 will do :)
0:24 Well, for me it is. I didnt minds Friends, but dont have a connection to it, thought did like the characters and some episodes, but given a choice, I'd pick Family Guy first. Taht being said, I was very sad to hear Matthew passed away. I agree, I remember all the good performances he did.
Loved chandler & Mathew Perry
Now I want to play Donkey Kong Country 2.
I've been watching Friends in recent years, and I have to say it's a good show, especially with a cute woman known as Phoebe, who's my favourite character. Chandler's cool as well. But to think Matthew Perry had been struggling with drugs, it really hurts, and I can't believe he has died, as a result of it! In fact, I never realised how important "The One Where Mr Heckles Dies" is, having only seen it once. May Matthew rest in peace and his work continue to inspire others. He gave me loads of laughs and I've enjoyed his chemistry with Courtney Cox; Chandler and Monica have become my favourite couple, after I lost hope for Ross and Rachel.
It didn't use laugh tracks was live audience and they would clip it as would run over the next line
I can't believe it ended in 2004!! Geeze its been over twice as long as it ran!!! I still love the reruns ❤😂 they are killing it on royalties!!
bro sound like infographic show guy
I am him
A cult classic? No. It was one of the most popular shows ever. It doesn't have a cult following. I has a huge following.
Yeesh
Whats up with the Video game and Donkey Kong Country music background? lol
It’s good music and it’s copyright free to use in the background of my videos
Matthew Perry was a great hiliarious guy i will miss him so much. R I P Matthew i will always love and miss you 😢💔🙏
There has been a ripple effect. I am most sad to not see him with Courtney Cox anymore. They were an "iconic" couple.
Dylan asked me to say, have a great day everyone :)
That episode was funny!😅
Excellent & ya skipped over …. “Scientists thought the smallest thing in the Universe, was the Atom… then they bashed it open & a whole bunch of crap came out 🎉”
RIP Mr. Perry X
Yes he will end up alone.
There was no laugh track
What makes it even more hilarious is that phoebe is right. Evolution is a scientific theory, among many, not fact
Well I guess me and Matthew have a lot more in common than I already knew! Im 47 and feel like I missed out on keeping the right girl! Goes all the way back to who i dated all through high school and a coulpe years after! But im sure im just one of the billion other stories!
And instead of becoming snake man it was matt man!
Why is sadder now? Do ppl just think it is cause Matthew Perry is gone?
😢
Friends was a litmus test for US psyche. Just wish they would’ve left the laugh tracks out. It’s not real life.
The Bojack comparison gets under my skin, it's a really bad take
Kinda hard to watch the clips when you’re talking through the whole thing, you could have just been story telling without any clips. It would have been nice if you paused at certain parts & let us hear the dialogues. Just sayin’ 😬
The original cut of this video had a lot more clips from the show of the characters talking. Unfortunately, UA-cam’s copyright system blocked every version where I had too much clips in it. Which is also why the footage you see has filters on it. If I had included any more clips from the show, the video would’ve been blocked worldwide by NBC unfortunately
wowowowowow
Dylan Doodle, it made an impact on Gen-Xers, is trans-generational that my millennial daughter watches it.
