Great reaction but you missed the twist. It’s not just that they ended up in the same hospital. The final part takes part earlier than the first two parts, and Jenny and Screech were Violet’s twin babies, both presumably handed over to foster care after they were born to a dying mother murdered by their father, growing up apart - unknowingly mirroring their parents characters - only to meet each other on the street on that fateful night 14 years later…

I think the problem you have with ren is trying to put him in a genre. He's not a rapper but cannrap his ass off. He's not a singer but has a crazy vocal range. He produces, writes, instrumentals, beat boxes, jumps from genre to genre with ease.
I reckon if you listen to genesis with the lyrics up, then something like his busking i shot the sheriff, Road to zion, hip hop. If that don't get ya, I don't know what to say bruv 😂

You are quite correct police in the UK don’t regularly carry firearms except for specific firearms officers. I am a former UK police officer who is normally very very particular on accuracy, but I was so captivated in this story. I did not pick up on it straight away, he is a modern day Shakespearean storyteller

this is the only reactor I've seen who really noted how unique it was that the armed officers were called out to find the guy that slashed up this body. we don't call them out without a good idea that a very dangerous person is still on the street and needs to be found and stopped and that the police don't think the usual unarmed officers can do so.

    • @NilZed1
      @NilZed1 Рік тому

@@DistractedArachnid it's possible, but as rare as it is that the armed unit is called out, I'd hate to think there was someone out doing something worse out in the same hour in that same neighbourhood.
the point @Alex Longmore and I were making is that unit being called tells you just how badly he slashed her up and how dangerous the perpetrator, Screech, was perceived to be.

In London if it's an area with a known gang problem & also a years long, ongoing Albanian v Somali dealer turf war ( like where I lived) armed response isnt an unusual thing. Before I moved , it came out to a guy always hanging out with the local dealer , who lived opposite us. They took around 5 or 6 guns & a couple of machetes out the trunk of his BMW.

When you say it’s so easy to say fuck screech and so hard to say the world failed him, you’re hitting pretty damn close to Ren’s message. He’s said we’re all just a few bad decisions away from being Screech, and he wrote this trilogy initially in respond to a news article about a 14 yr old killing a prostitute and wondered what drove him to that point in life.
Also, during his live performance of the trilogy in Brighton, he read this to the crowd beforehand:
There's this lie that we have either Yin or Yang.
We are neither, and we are both.
We are Apollo, and we are Dionysus.
We are Jesus, and we are Judas.
We are the healing hands of Mother Theresa, and we are the poisonous tongue of Adolf Hitler.
We do not solely walk a path of good, nor do we walk tread a path of evil.
    We simply walk.
And if we choose to rain down judgement based on some self-inflated moral code,
We forget that we are but a few decisions or a few mistakes away from becoming demons,
Or we're a few good deeds away from becoming angels.
Our actions cannot be placed into black and white boxes,
For there is beauty within destruction, And there is ugliness within perfection.

I can perfectly understand loving pieces like this and Hi Ren and being less enamoured with Illest of Our Time and Animal Flow. They're of a different style and it's reasonable to love one and not like another, especially when Hi Ren sets expectations so high. Not only that, but the best of artists can't write their magnum opus over and over. Iron Maiden are one of my favourite bands, but that doesn't mean I don't think there's some absolute dross in their catalogue.
I can take or leave Illest and Animal, though I would suggest checking out his acoustic version of Animal Flow. Not sure if it'll sell you on the track, but it's impressive how he's able to adapt it into a completely different thing. Then again, I feel The Hunger is a better representation of his rap credentials.
His work with Sam Tompkins is also worth checking out to get an idea of his range. You mentioned street performing: look up Sam and Ren doing Earned it/Man's World/Falling while out busking, and also Blind Eye (ft. Angry Car Park Attendant) for a bit of fun.
Also also, I feel like you might've missed the twist at the end with the call back to Jenny and Screech (I know I did for the first few listens).
Screech is said to be 14 in Jenny's Tale, which Ren wrote in 2019.
Violet's starts "London City, Far from pretty, 2-0-0-5"
"If I'm to die this very night, Please let my babIES stay alive"
"A tragedy or miracle, It happened on these very streets
Two twins aligned side-by-side, A girl called Jenny and a boy called Screech"
(though, personally, I feel 'a boy called Screech' is the one flaw in this entire piece as it's incongruous with the fact they're Violet's children:
"A tragedy or miracle, her babies left with just their names
Two twins aligned side-by-side, A called called Jenny and a boy called James"
    (or something to that effect))
Or course, the other thing this brings to light is that Jenny - who'd walked London's streets at night a thousand times before - is also only 14. That means probably not a barmaid, cleaner, party girl or any other socially acceptable thing that might have an adult regularly out late at night...

    • @rebeccaburnell9319
      @rebeccaburnell9319 11 місяців тому

One correction - Ren's lyrics, pinned to the video, say "please let my baby stay alive"
Violet had avoided prenatal care (health care is an issue for domestic abuse cases, where medical care can = disclosure of the abuse... the abuser sometimes prevents the victim from seeking care, to avoid law enforcement becoming involved or to avoid the victim being given support to leave... and sometimes the victim themselves avoids the care if they're not ready to leave the situation) and she didn't know she was carrying twins. Which is dangerous, because pregnancies with multiples can carry serious risks if not monitored closely.

Violet was silent, she was pregnant by her father that's how she moved out at 16 through welfare. Stevie moved into her apartment but was jealous and insecure and took it out on her when he was drunk I doubt that silent Violet did or said anything to trigger him except maybe avoid him. Jenny & Screech were the children of their grandfather & their mother. Brother & sister twins adopted separately and growing up without knowing each other. It's hard to understand the story without projecting our experiences on to it. A lot of people miss the twist at the end.

Most british police don't carry firearms when on patrol, it's usually a collapsible baton, pepper spray and sometimes a taser, but in central london you'll see officers with mp5s, pistols etc. Firearms are usually reserved for special units. The UK cops are usually approachable (mostly..there's power hungry bullies in the force too) and tend to resort to de-escalation tactics as policy, over violence when dealing with aggressive citizens..but physically attack them and you'll be in for some hurt

you called it on violet. abused children, boys or girls, tolerate a lot of shit from other people, victims don't know that red flags are reg flags like the rest of us do. I know I chatted, briefly, to men who I knew to ignore, the things they were saying were in exploration to see what I would tolerate. They often stepped away from me before I completely knew to step away from them. They didn't want a girl who knew better, they wanted an easier victim.

Screech is literally and figuratively the product of his father's wickedness, with Stevie even being referred to as the devil.
It can even be taken further to suggest, while the ghost of Stevie hangs over Screech, the ghost of Violet is trying to watch over Jenny.
"Usually she was alright, but it was like there was something in the air,
A divine intervention telling her to beware..."

    I agree!
Animal Flow is my least favorite vid from Ren.
Think it was over produced and the least raw of all his vids.
Being a Pink Floyd fan, Animals is one of my favorite albums so I'm biased for sure.
I like the acoustic version much better.
Im not a rap fan (thats just me, a 65yr old ) but really like Ren cause he mixes it up with so many other genres.
    Nice dogs!

The biggest thing you gotta remember Ren just puts out stuff he likes and doesnt try to match a specific genre that's why you I feel you don't like his rap but the majority of his catalog is like this singing with guitar. From your reactions you would like money game part 1 and 2.

While I do agree with you, I would also say that when it comes to "Hip-Hop," you have to remember too that it's a culture, not just a genre of music so if your music/culture doesn't fit in with "hip-hop" culture, and you're calling what you are doing "hip-hop" then people who are very protective of that culture and music are going to take issue with it and/or not like what they hear. Rapping is rapping, but hip-hop has rules and when you step outside of those rules, the purists get their feathers ruffled.

I think what everyone loves about Ren the most is his versatility, I wouldn't says he's the best at anything, but he can compete in everything.
I think you should take a look at the songs Humble, and Fire, both by Ren obviously. They will give you a couple more sides of Ren for you to pick from

I have to go in with some actual facts: it's not the females turning to the violent men, trying to find something familiar to what she grew up with. It's the violent men - the predators - who search for the broken and easy to manipulate-girls.
We need to change the narrative we use as a society about domestic violence, because as long as there's room for people to believe it's somewhat the females own fault for being beaten to a pulp or in worst case scenario killed, because we as a society have such a hard time to take in that some people grow up to be predators and others their punching bags, this wheel will keep spinning. The abusive adults will keep feeding our communities with young adults with too much PTSD to function on their own.
Mistreat a child enough and this is, extremely simplified, the end product:
    A predator. A victim.
    Tell Terry hi from me!

Ren is an amazing artist whose storytelling abilities are top-notch! You might also consider listening to the ending of Violet's tale to fully get the connection in the story😊

22:38 ok. this is a cultural problem for evbody. and its similar to ur earlier argument abt violet internalizing normal violence,, the problem is that our expectations are too high and our assumptions are too limited. this is the problem of the genre issue. remember that genre schema began as a marketing scheme and often times a tool for racial and cultural division. we need a new way to describe music on its own terms and merits, a new balance to our expectations and assumptions that is based on personal and community knowledge and experience, less on the limited /freedom of choice/ the markets provide us. we need to decide what we want and like on our own, and we make it ourselves (aided, not guided by tech) and it will be what it is and be called by its name. its an idea.

the other thing about the difference btwn this and animal flow (also my least fav ren track) is the extent of production. when theres more than ren playing out the action, it just becomes extraneous and distracting and frustrating. ren is like reading a book- its his words and your images, but his performance that catalyzes the two. when hes trying to go all Marvel with a noisy video with every image already provided, its less impressive on the mind and soul bcuz it frustrates the opposing images that are already conjured in ur mind. this is why im afraid the for the money game pt3 drop. im also very excited, but preparing to be disappointed. its been hyped so much as 'the craziest thing ever' and sounds like they kind of had somewhat unltd resources, that makes me worry. from a moving image standpoint, thats often what ruins good directors when theyre not ready to expand. it hasnt been necessary to their message yet. but then theyre thrown big budgets and suddenly great prospects like christopher nolan and darren aronofsky fall flat when their restrictions are taken away, when the tools of human connection/separation (technology) are inserted into the process unnessessarily for moneys sake. but all that is to say something like animal flow was a fun experiment (theyre Master Amateurs, learning as they go) but the lesson there is to draw back and keep the focus on ren. nothing else is needed. cept sometimes his crew
