The sheer joy displayed is infectious. The world needs more joy. Not play-acting joy, or joyous behavior meant to manipulate, but joy based on honesty & the insight someone also skilled enough to REALLY appreciate what is going on. For years I've been aware musicians frequently appreciate different music than non-musicians. Their knowledge & understanding of the music, what is happening, what it takes to make, the skill, practice, artistry, everything, makes their joyous appreciation so much more valid & therefore valuable. Musicians appreciate musicians in a way non-musicians can't. It isn't the non-musicians' fault, they aren't less of a person for it, it is just that a musician's appreciation envelopes their soul in a different & more complete way. THAT'S what the world needs more of: honest passion & joy.

IMHO Yoyoka did more than justice to this song. I know she missed a couple of crashes like some people had commented and criticized before but they forget that Yoyoka’s kit isn’t the same as Peart. We can only imagine what this kid could do with his kit. You can really tell that she enjoyed this cover (and you too) and I thought she looked like she just woke up as well. :) Anyway, this darn kid is just so fluid. She glides like an Olympic skater. Always a joy to watch her. 👍🥁🙂🤘🏼

  • @ThePallidor

They say listening to Mozart increases your IQ. In the same way I feel like listening to Yoyoka increases my aesthetic intelligence.
Raw creativity tends to decline as we get older and more set in our ways, while technical skill increases, so the sweet spot where "creativity x technique" is maximized may happen in high school or college or way beyond for a given musician, but when you have a monstrous talent this young you get to a very special part of that curve: extreme childlike creativity and childlike confidence while having incredibly good technique.
This is not unprecedented in music, as we have a number of classical virtuoso prodigies like Sayaka Shoji on violin, but it seems unprecedented in rock music, and this is highly significant because rock is a much more visceral mode of expression than classical, which tends to be more abstracted. When you have a 8-11 year old laying down exactly how they feel a song, with all the technical clarity of a very talented adult, you get a unique window into that world. I remember going absolutely bonkers listening to rock when I was 7, 8, 9, etc., but I didn't have the means to convey how I felt the music to anyone else other than jumping around my living room with wild eyes. Yoyoka does. She has all the sophistication of an adult master yet with the playfulness and wonder of a child.
It's a once-in-a-century phenomenon and I'm honored to be experiencing it with you and other fellow fans! Thank you!

I've been watching Yoyoka's videos for years. Clearly, she is a prodigy. It is a joy watching her develop musically. I am a musician, but not a drummer, and am fascinated with drummers' ability to isolate & manipulate the four physical quadrants of their bodies, two hands, two feet, each quadrant moving independently with a timing all its own. That is an amazing feat even at the beginner level. How you possibly remember complex songs is a marvel to me. I've been playing for years and I still need some visual aid to remember my part, whether sheet music or tablature, just something I can glance at. Maybe it's because I was classically trained to sight read sheet music, and being taught to read is actually a limitation, but regardless, your ability to remember drum music is marvelous. I appreciate your analysis of her playing. Since I'm not a drummer it helps me to understand and appreciate her playing at a deeper level. Keep it up.

I know your enthusiasm is genuine by the way you relate it to your own life as a drummer. If you listen really hard, especially near the end, you can hear cymbals in the song that Yoyoka was not playing at all. It came from the original track. There are also times when what you hear in the music does not match Yoyoka's toms. I learnt from another reaction video (Andrew Rooney's Drums) that this was due to Yoyoka being unable to totally "bury" the drum track for this particular song. YYZ was THAT complicated. Coupled with the fact that Yoyoka's set would also never match Peart's set, there were many things that could still be heard from the original track.
All that does not actually amount to a criticism. She knew full well that there were parts that she could not replicate with her kit, so those parts could still be heard. All in all, it meant that her team (probably her dad) would leave it in the cover and not attempt to edit it out, making this cover VERY genuine. Hence, it was really a touching tribute to Neil Peart (as she states in her own video description). She did her best with what she had, but left the rest of the track intact. Couldn't ask for a better tribute from her.

Musician or not, I think some people just "feel" music differently. If there's music playing, you'll see some people that are just sitting still, while others, even if they're involved in doing something and not paying attention to the music will be tapping their feet, or swaying along with the rhythm. And some people, even if there's no music playing will be bouncing or nodding their head to their own internal rhythm. I think Yoyoka is one of those. She just seems to have music flowing through her veins.

Hi Nick! When you said, "Buy 10 ply heads!" Did you mean 10 mil. heads? I use Remo Ambassador heads on my small toms. Single ply 10 mil. batter, 3 mil. resonant side. I use Remo Powerstroke 3 batters on my floor toms. I use a Remo Powerstroke 3 clear dot on my detuned Sonor snare, 3mil. Ambassador resonant side. My Pearl piccolo snare has a 7.5 mil Remo Diplomat batter and a 2 mil. Remo Diplomat resonant side. On my bass drums, I use Remo Powersonic batters and Ambassadors on the resonant side. I've never seen a drum head of any brand using more than 3 plys. I have seen heavy metal idiots use 5 Remo Emperor heads on a snare and strip the lug threads. If, I'm incorrect, please correct me. Best Wishes! Russ

It seems I might have mispoke when I said 10-ply. I seem to remember being able to buy super thick heads that were more than 1 layer thick. I might be thinking of 2 or 3 ply, I just was tryin to say the thickest heads you can buy because you can always tighten them to get the proper feel etc. haha Thanks for asking that!

@@vand3rhorst Hi Nick! the venues I've played at have been pretty diversified. I've played everything from cocktail lounges to South Mountain Arena. If you're playing soft jazz or soft rock, an Emperor head just can't produce the sound. If you bang loud enough to be heard, the entire audience will be ticked off at you and also your band members will. Thick heads cause sound compression and decrease dynamic range. Conversely, when we played at the Capitol Theater, I sent my keyboard player to the last seat of the lower mezzanine during sound check. I hit my unmiced Rogers Piccolo snare with Diplomat heads and he heard it loud and clear. Yes, in my younger days I broke a lot of Diplomat heads. I played like Junna. However, I matured and developed sticking and striking that decreased head damage. The bottom line is: What are you really trying to achieve? What sounds are you really trying to make? What pleases you? For every drummer out there, the answers are different. Hang in there! Russ

@@vand3rhorst Hi Nick! Emperor X heads has 2 -10 mil. plies with a 5 mil. bottom sound dot. That's Remo's thickest drum head. Aquarian Triple Threat has 3-7mil. plies. Aquarian Impact Head has 2-10 mil. plies with a 10 mil. bottom sound dot. This is the thickest head I can find. Russ
