Good reaction. Deep Purple was one of the most popular hard rock bands back in the late 60's and 70's, pretty much started the "metal" genre of music. Their drummer, Ian Paice is considered one of the best rock drummers from that time period along with Moon, Bonham, and many more.
Great video. This is definitely one of my favourite Yoyoka performances and I love that you seem amazed by the same aspects I am. The whole thing is a tour de force, but that fill around 4:42 is just incredible!
She really has a good understanding of what's going on from a technical point of view and communicates it very well. I still can't believe she's only 9 in this vid and schooling us like a boss!

I think YOYOKA knows how to hit without getting tired. It's very important for little girls. Anyway, her drumming is powerful without stagnation. She can play various types of music. I think that's amazing. Please enjoy many performances!

Unlike most other young drummers or even seasoned rock drummers who seem to be fighting with the drums or trying to conquer them, Yoyoka is like a great dancer who dances "with" the drums. She doesn't fight with them, she enjoys the dance between herself and the beat. Her enjoyment is half the pleasure of watching her effortless dance. I compare her to Fred Astaire, The Nicholas Brothers, and Gene Kelly, a few of the greatest dancers of all time of the drum world. I've been hooked on her playing since she was 6. I love that smile lol
Ian Paice must be one of the greats of rock music. How can you not Know this track. Amazing, at least Yoyoka Chan has introduced you to good drum tracks
She’s 11 years old here. Imagine the strength and stamina it takes to play a 6 minute rocker like this. Most (male) rock drummers have big “guns,” but Yoyoka with her noodle arms has no problem keeping up with them! 😎🤘🙌

I can only base that as a guitar player. The more I improve my technique, I feel like I can play a grueling piece without hand strain. So I can imagine that’s how and why Yoyoka looks so effortless.
Ian Paice pointed out that he's seen drummers much older than she, who can't play it as well. (11? you're kidding me! she's got to be 35 at least!) and that she hits harder than he does (first thing out of his mouth).

When you have a minute, or 5, watch Ian Paice's ( Deep Purple drummer ) reaction to this song. You don't need to do a reaction but it's pretty cool watching the guy who made this song famous praise her ability. You can see that it really chokes him up seeing his music inspiring her.
Old dude here, I saw Purple live twice in the late 1970s, they were my hands-down #1 band for a long time. As you commented, they really co-invented Metal along with Sabbath (and to some extent Zeppelin). Ian Paice did a reaction to Yoyoka, you have to watch that.
"Burn" was Yoyoka thrashing, but sometimes it's the more subtle stuff that really blows you away. Check this one out: Toto "Rosanna" ua-cam.com/video/6P-tTLmuKo0/v-deo.html I'm not a big Toto fan, but Jeff Porcaro (RIP) was a god on drums, and this clip will leave you speechless.
Check out the reaction that Ian Paice did for this (Deep Purple`s drummer) . He was equally as blown away by it . Thanks for not being like some reactors to Yoyoka and trying to find fault in her playing , she has none , she`s now in the top 500 drummers OF ALL TIME according to Drumworld because she plays like Paice , Bonham , etc etc etc all rolled into one , you are right , she`s a very very rare talent the is and only will be one Yoyoka .
Hey Nick here two years later listening again you still have the best reaction videos out there I appreciate the way you don't cut into often but it's real hard not to isn't it
Yeah, this was the cover that landed Yoyoka in the Top 500 Drummers in Drummerworld. THAT is saying a lot, given that my favourite band drummer, John Dolmayan, is not even on that list! (I am quite pissed off at that fact, but REALLy happy Yoyoka is there).
The best way to introduce Deep Purple is to listen their best studio album "Machine Head" or the best live album ever "Made In Japan". And again, Mr. Ian Paice on drums, the master. One cannot talk about drummers of that era without mentioning COZY POWELL. "Stargazer" and "Kill the King" from the album "Long Live Rock´n Roll" from a band called Rainbow.
Dude - am really enjoying your Yoyoka reacts - you give great commentary! I LIKE the way you stop the video to make comments and also that you replay sections to review it. I do have three small suggestions (meant to be helpful): 1) Most of the time you were standing in front of Yoyoka and her snare. Can you center her more, or your stand off to the side? 2) her volume could have been higher. 3) Your mic seems very sensitive - we sometimes here you exhaling into the mic, or hear you banging or moving the mic (it's distracting). Just trying to help!
Here's a few to react to when you get a chance. (1) Stray Cats - Rock This Town / Cover by Yoyoka Soma , 8 year old ua-cam.com/video/Q8X-JAJ7CBw/v-deo.html (She is standing the whole time, jumping up and down, left foot leaves the ground and she never misses a beat! (3) This is the first one I feel like she was exhibiting truly professional level skils. Age 7 Char "Smoky"を7歳女子ドラマーが叩いてみた/ 7 year old drummer ”Yoyoka" ua-cam.com/video/YZ_wEW8tI9U/v-deo.html
Yeah! I got to finally watch it yesterday and probably rewinded it like 15 times. I've never seen a video fo Ian like that before either. Loved his reaction! haha "She played that better than me" haha
@@vand3rhorst She generates so much power and that’s because she has such beautiful relaxed technique. Everything comes from her core. Her arms are perfect extensions of her body. When we teach conservatory students we try to emphasize how the core and shoulders generate activity, but most kids have a hard time with it. Yoyoka just gets it.
That is a great piece of advice to know. I was self-taught so I just taught myself to fling about n make it sound right. In my adult life, I'm taking the time to do rudiments etc. and generate said power from my core also. It's really helping my stamina haha my live streams are 4+ hours long now.
@@vand3rhorst awesome! You’ll discover that you can find lots of details in the music because you’re not worrying about stamina. When you look at the truly great players like Elvin Jones and Ian Paice (just to mention drummers) you can see that they’re always finding little details because their minds are open. My instrument is piano, and players like Schnabel and Michelangelo and Solomon displayed an effortlessness that is truly inspiring.
Mate she is an Alien from another planet 😂. I have a playlist of most of her stuff from age 7 😱 You need to look at the Ian Paice critic on her drumming on Burn, he was blown away with her playing and said he would like to meet her one day 👍 By the way Deep Purple are still massive cover band in Japan today and many High School Brass Bands do Smoke on the Water and Highway Star brilliantly, take a listen 🎧

@@AlizeeDefan AHHHH Babymetal released a copyright claim to me and now allows me to react to their stuff. How weirdly coincidental hahaha I'm very grateful.
Ian watched this video and was impressed and very complementary. He said he'd like to meet her. She was apparently recently offered a professorship at a Japanese university.
Hi Van! Sometime could you do her version of "Killing in the Name Of" ???? The one with her mom doing vocals, her Auntie Madoooon (yes there are 5 O's) on bass, & some guy on guitar. I love it❣️
The term “Heavy Metal Music” was coined to describe bands like Purple, Zeppelin, and Sabbath. It has evolved to the point that DP are not really considered “Metal” anymore, but they helped invent the form and are huge influences even today. Van Halen, Metallica, and Dream Theater are/were all huge DP fans.
@@iFoneVids I know but in the early seventies, the term heavy metal was never used in my country NL. Loud music with a base in blues and rock was called hardrock. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin were hardrock bands. Later when the music became even louder and less based on blues the term Heavy Metal was used. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden were Heavy Metal bands.
Since I first saw Yoyoka's Zep Good Times Bad Times cover, I've been a fan. She rocks! No doubt! I've got so many that I love. You did reacts to most of them so I won't make any Yoyoka recommendations. BUUUUUTTT.... "The only Deep Purple... Smoke on the Water"???? OMG!! LOL I'm an old fart, so I grew up with Deep Purple. Just wanted to recommend a few tracks you might enjoy. Not necessarily to "react" to but to dip into the pool that is Deep Purple! 😄 1. LAZY - it's a 7 minute song with the first 4+ minutes being an instrumental jam session. It's actually my favorite Deep Purple tune. Interestingly, it never charted in the US. 2. HUSH - Another great track. GREAT organ solo in the last 1/3 of the song. Made it as high as Smoke on the US charts (#4) 3. HIGHWAY STAR - Just an overall great track. Since you love Deep Purple's vocals, you'll probably enjoy this one. Another that didn't chart. 4. SPACE TRUCKIN - Great, solid tune. The 3rd one that never charted and the ONLY one on the list that wasn't released as a single. The other 4 were but only 2 charted. 5. WOMAN FROM TOKYO - Although you said Smoke was the only track you ever heard, you may have heard this one as it was popular about the same time. I do enjoy your stuff. Keep up the great reacts!
That's awesome :D Thank you very much for the suggestions. Ima put these on my list of things to check out and am gonna start a sorta video/radio/news/random things show gonna do it weekly. :D I am glad to be back!
re: Deep Purple vocals. The vocalist here is Deep Purple's 3rd lead singer, none other than David Coverdale. The high harmony co-lead is bassist Glenn Hughes. I find it funny that my two favorite Deep Purple songs are sung by people other than Ian Gillen. This one and Hush (sung by Rod Evans, their first lead singer).
Don't forget Rod Evan's vocals on the first Captain Beyond album. I wish Yoyoka would do her interpretation of Bobby Caldwell's work on this entire album.

Now we need a reaction to Ian paice “mule”
@@paytonfreer8945 Niceeeee Im gonna put this on the list now :D haha thanks Payton!
I never really liked this song till now 🤩😂
In 63 and a retired working musician and this is pure ambrosia to the ears..
Next-level Yoyoka. There’s no ceiling for this one apparently.
I CAN NOT BELIEVE I HAVE NEVER HEARD THIS SONG BEFORE....THE RADIO HAS LIED TO ME. lol
When you have a minute, or 5, watch Ian Paice's ( Deep Purple drummer ) reaction to this song. You don't need to do a reaction but it's pretty cool watching the guy who made this song famous praise her ability. You can see that it really chokes him up seeing his music inspiring her.
Ok,. I am gonna watch this rn :D
Old dude here, I saw Purple live twice in the late 1970s, they were my hands-down #1 band for a long time. As you commented, they really co-invented Metal along with Sabbath (and to some extent Zeppelin). Ian Paice did a reaction to Yoyoka, you have to watch that.
@@hiawatha.g Yesss Thank you so much for tellin me :D I've never seen a video fo Ian before like that. Wonderful video!!
Her performance skills are improving as well.
She's been a good teacher since age 5.
I am gonna go watch her videos of when she was 6 and doing drum lesson videos haha I heard theyre super wholesome.
You’re lovin’ the song as much as Yoyoka’s drumming. 😊
Check out yoyoka.
Girls just want to have fun.
Neither is Terry Bozzio! But Animal, from The Muppets is.
Actually, Yoyoka was named twice there as Yoyoka and Yoyoka Soma. So, maybe they can put your fave band drummer.
@@iFoneVids Nah, she was only listed once, but there were two links to the same page.
(You did put my hopes up for a small, short while :p)
@@RahimRahmat That’s what I meant, she got 2 links. I wondered if they counted those 2 links as one individual or 2 out of 500.
@@iFoneVids I believe they're counted as 1/500. Anyway, if Dolmayan don't care, neither should I, right? :p
welcome everyone!! pls be sure to leave a comment to help boost the algorithm and like the vid
I knew you'd like this one. Pretty hard not to like anything she does.
haha I am STILL reeling from this.
Check her cover of Peter Gabriel's Steam. Crazy good!!
It really was! :D
i wonder how many older drummers she has made about cry
I don't know if it still holds true, but for awhile the loudest concert ever was Deep Purple in the Astrodome and I was there! Awesome
Nailed it..
She was/is eleven in this video.
Ian Paice reacted to this and was overjoyed. She just keeps getting better and better.
I loved it!
Look up Whitesnakes Burn in London live with Tommy Aldridge on drums!
Ootw
I have a playlist "yoyoka" on my music app putting all the songs she covers
Dude - am really enjoying your Yoyoka reacts - you give great commentary! I LIKE the way you stop the video to make comments and also that you replay sections to review it. I do have three small suggestions (meant to be helpful): 1) Most of the time you were standing in front of Yoyoka and her snare. Can you center her more, or your stand off to the side? 2) her volume could have been higher. 3) Your mic seems very sensitive - we sometimes here you exhaling into the mic, or hear you banging or moving the mic (it's distracting). Just trying to help!
She does a cover by cream that is so awesome
Here's a few to react to when you get a chance.
(1) Stray Cats - Rock This Town / Cover by Yoyoka Soma , 8 year old ua-cam.com/video/Q8X-JAJ7CBw/v-deo.html (She is standing the whole time, jumping up and down, left foot leaves the ground and she never misses a beat! This is the one I think she is most playful in.)
(2) Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson - ft. Bruno Mars / Cover by Yoyoka, 9 year old ua-cam.com/video/-i9Mqo99fKE/v-deo.html (This girl has funk!)
(3) This is the first one I feel like she was exhibiting truly professional level skils. Age 7 Char "Smoky"を7歳女子ドラマーが叩いてみた/ 7 year old drummer ”Yoyoka" ua-cam.com/video/YZ_wEW8tI9U/v-deo.html
Have you seen Ian Paice’s reaction? “Oh, this part should be a lazy waltz.” LOL
I have a playlist of most of her stuff from age 7 😱
You need to look at the Ian Paice critic on her drumming on Burn, he was blown away with her playing and said he would like to meet her one day 👍
By the way Deep Purple are still massive cover band in Japan today and many High School Brass Bands do Smoke on the Water and Highway Star brilliantly, take a listen 🎧
Yoyoka was born with sticks in her hands
11 ... approaching her 12th birthday. Check out her 12th birthday jam...

Thank you Hiawatha! :D I will check into this today.
12 in oct, watch her play l.z. dazed and confused
ALL those fills u hear throughout the song is in he original with Ian Paice on drums
I feel so deprived having not listened to deep purple back in the day. xD I am glad I am here now though.
@@vand3rhorst I felt the same way when I missed the 1st 10 years of Babymetal
@@AlizeeDefan AHHHH Babymetal released a copyright claim to me and now allows me to react to their stuff. How weirdly coincidental hahaha I'm very grateful.
Ian watched this video and was impressed and very complementary. He said he'd like to meet her. She was apparently recently offered a professorship at a Japanese university.
YYZ by Rush
That is the very next react right after the one releasing at 8am xD SO EXCITED!
COOL
Her cover of Deep Purple, Speed King
Hey Van You To Can Grow Up And Practice And Be Almost As Good As Yoyoka! ;-D
I knooooowwww! haha I absolutely would take lessons from her on my left hand work. 100%.
She also does Led Zeppelin
Hi Van!
Sometime could you do her version
of "Killing in the Name Of" ????
The one with her mom doing
vocals, her Auntie Madoooon
(yes there are 5 O's) on bass,
& some guy on guitar.
I love it❣️
Oh yeah! I'd love to do that one :D I might even bump it up the list now haha.
Deep Purple is Hardrock. Metal came later.
The definition of “Metal” changed somewhere along the line. Are Zeppelin and Sabbath still considered Heavy Metal?
@@semprini77 John Lord, the keyboard player said that they saw themselves as a hardrock band.
See bbc documentary Metal Britannia
The term “Heavy Metal Music” was coined to describe bands like Purple, Zeppelin, and Sabbath. It has evolved to the point that DP are not really considered “Metal” anymore, but they helped invent the form and are huge influences even today. Van Halen, Metallica, and Dream Theater are/were all huge DP fans.
Actually, ‘Heavy Metal’ was coined from Steppenwolf’s Born to be Wild. That’s why we have that on the lexicon.
1. LAZY - it's a 7 minute song with the first 4+ minutes being an instrumental jam session. It's actually my favorite Deep Purple tune. Interestingly, it never charted in the US.
2. HUSH - Another great track. GREAT organ solo in the last 1/3 of the song. Made it as high as Smoke on the US charts (#4)
One take. No editing. In the pocket. Stud.
re: Deep Purple vocals.
Whoaaa, I love band trivia like this :D Thank you.
Don't forget Rod Evan's vocals on the first Captain Beyond album.
I wish Yoyoka would do her interpretation of Bobby Caldwell's work on this entire album.
@@vand3rhorst Deep Purple's first run up to the late '70s when they disbanded was full of odd, juicy trivia. Especially in the later years after Blackmore forced Gillen & Glover out.
