Pete puts it all out there in this song, and the entire "Empty Glass" album. One of the finest collections of music ever assembled, by any artist, IMO. So fresh even 41 years later.
Empty Glass album is a all time classic rock album. It's Pete at his solo best, honest open songs all about Pete. Amazing artist who hangs it all out in his own songs
1980, my 18 year old self. This song was my inner heart, this album was my teenage soul. Now at 61, I just cry all the time - longing for the years gone. I want to go back, people I loved are gone - they knew what Pete means to me. And I am moving swiftly towards the end of my time. My family has been instructed to play this album for me....as I'm dying.
Howdy, some albums just meld with the times, others take you back to an exact time, this is one of those albums, 16 years old. exciting times! I hope there is much music and joy at your passing!
@@kennedyterence4209 Thank you for that kind sentiment. There will be a huge celebration when I die, because they all hate me. I can already see my sexy wife with someone else's meat hooks all over her. Nah...just kidding. Yes I'm deeply sad about aging, and losing my hero's like Keith Emerson, and Greg Lake. Keith Moon, and John Entwistle. Neil, God I miss Neil. But I don't think I'm going anywhere for a while. I stay lean, don't smoke. Always keep moving. God keep me around to enjoy great Bourbon, and large breasts.
If you LIVED the combined complexity of moods of all the songs on this brilliant album- you’d be left spent and at the mercies of their majestic swings-both high, and low…
Oh.....what a *thrill* for ya - check out the look on Pete's face when he sings that line. It's not too often that you see someone singing with so much passion the way Pete is singing here. Yes, I realize that the track is the studio version from the album......but it looks like the band were actually performing in the background......and Pete looks pissed off about the state of his life at that point in time.
He was in the throes of alcoholism and drug addiction, too. So glad Roger convinced him to get sober. He is my hero. Been sober 6 years now. Pete is a living god!
Brave, revealing, utterly unappreciated solo album by a rock genius. The lyrics throughout are shattering; Pete was painfully ahead of his time, and loved for it.
Agreed. When Chinese Eyes came out a good friend of mine brought the cassette for me to listen to.He was in college at the University of Illinois studying nuclear engineering. ( A brilliant kid) He loved it and he knew that I would too. Which I did. Within a year he was dead from suicide. We were about 17 and I'm 56 now. I've NEVER stopped listening to that album ever since.
When this album was released for sale I was so excited to buy and listen to it, I enjoyed Pete music and songs, his words of wisdom and experience. To this day I listen to this album and each song is a treasure of emotions, Pete is a Genius and the album is a masterpiece, the music will live on after we all have gone.
I enjoy this album now more than ever. I remember buying a cassette when it came out now it brings me back to good old days Pete, you rock you’re the best.❤️💪
For anyone still curious: The members of this band (Deep End) were David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Simon Phillips on drums, bassist Chucho Merchan, keyboardist Rabbit Bundrick, and percussionist Jody Linscott. On vocals were Billy Nicholls, Cleveland Watkiss, and on brass ensemble were The Kick Horns.
"Don't worry, smile and dance. You just can't work life out. Don't let down moods entrance ya, take the wine and shout... My life's a mess, I wait for you to pass. I stand here at the bar, I hold an empty glass." The brilliance is in the juxtaposition, side by side.
Wow. Didn't know there was a video (as such) for this. Always liked this song and whole album. The word "underrated" is, I notice, overrated on UA-cam, but this album, folks, is underrated!
Back in the day when you just lip-synced your studio album - poorly - for the video. Only the drummer pulling it off of course The shots of the harmonies are priceless! Fantastic song from a fantastic album.
It needs to be this Pete version from his own album. The Who Are You demo version of this "Empty Glass" song is kind of a mess. Very disjointed, and lacking the power and drive of Pete's finished version here. I LOVE THIS SONG. This is Pete at his most urgent emotional best, from the most explosive to the most plaintive at the end. An absolute masterpiece, even for Pete. God bless him. Happy 75.
It's still a lot of fun to listen to Judas Priest's "Sin After Sin" and think about Simon's quiet demeanor in these videos. Folks can fight all they want, I don't get into that, but for my money, Simon's drum work on that album was the best that anybody ever did for JP.
Looks like a really young Simon Phillips (who drums for Toto now) is borrowing Kenney Jones' drumkit... and the other guitarist is borrowing one of Pete's Les Pauls, and aping some of Pete's moves.
At 4:00 the guy next to Pete is clearly scream singing and you don't hear him at all. Nice to have a music video for this great song, shame the music on screen can't be heard too.
This was not the Deep End band... This was a couple of years before them. It is definately Simon Townshend on guitar. Rabbit is on keys, Mark B. on drums... but no David Gilmour, etc...
I always thought the songs on this album should have been on the next Who record. Its Hard was not that good, only got good press and some airplay because it was the "1st" farewell tour for the group. This Empty Glass album was superb and should have included his Who bandmates.
Hi out there, word is out, again it's happening on the streets where it first started and it will begin again Come on Pete, your song is a perfect reflection of what is happening today in our worldwide window, let's please return back to the streets Pete.so shut off your computers and receits and let your voice be heard today. It is not only the fault of the politicians,we too just let it happen,we stood by and did nothing!
Is that his near lookalike, but thirteen years younger brother Paul, singing background? Clearly, this is lip synched from the studio recording, where Pete sings all the leads and backgrounds. Maybe he deliberately called in someone who looked like him for this.
Pete Townshend's Solo albums remind me a lot of what Noel Gallagher is doing now. They are departures from their signature group's albums, but exhibit the breadth of their talents.
Pete puts it all out there in this song, and the entire "Empty Glass" album. One of the finest collections of music ever assembled, by any artist, IMO. So fresh even 41 years later.
Empty Glass is my favorite solo album by Pete.
Empty Glass album is a all time classic rock album. It's Pete at his solo best, honest open songs all about Pete. Amazing artist who hangs it all out in his own songs
This song alone is enough to let the world know what a genius Townshend is - God bless.
One of my favorite albums of all time. I can listen to the entire album without skipping a song. Priceless.
Agreed. That's because it's MUSIC. Good, Goddamn MUSIC.
Nor should any song on this album be not listened to.
It's sick how talented this guy is
Isadore Michas I'm glad it gives me hope

I have always absolutely loved this album. I love this gutsy, no holds barred performance!

Pete is the absolute man

one of the best albums ever made - FYI
thanks for the upload. empty glass and chinese eyes are underrated for sure

Masterpiece album!. . .Look how young Simon Phillips is. .
kelly franklin who is that singing and playing guitar with him?
Yes I read yrs ago he was like 16 or 17. Brilliant drummer
@@suesjoy He looks a bit like the Andrew McMaster from The Motors. Check out
ua-cam.com/video/a8X1EKyhLHw/v-deo.html
yeah, that's mostly what i'm thinking about. he looks 15
Mark Brzezicki played on much of the album. Notice Tony Butler on bass
Can we all agree Pete and Simon Townshend are pretty rad?
One of the most underrated albums and artists of all time!
Pete is not underrated.
🤦♂️🤦♂️
Only 10 comments in and some moron says something is underrated. Jesus Christ.
FO👊 Underrated? By who?
Are you serious ?
Solo Pete if off the charts great.
I enjoy this album now more than ever. I remember buying a cassette when it came out now it brings me back to good old days Pete, you rock you’re the best.❤️💪
He is such a good singer
Agreed
@Carol I too agree with you and yourself!..
Brilliant! I love Pete’s attitude.
Anything from the Who or Pete Townshend solo albums are full of surprises!
For anyone still curious: The members of this band (Deep End) were David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Simon Phillips on drums, bassist Chucho Merchan, keyboardist Rabbit Bundrick, and percussionist Jody Linscott. On vocals were Billy Nicholls, Cleveland Watkiss, and on brass ensemble were The Kick Horns.
torimori13 That was for the “White City” touring band. Simon and Rabbit are present here though.
After a few years of digging for this album I found it in perfect condition along with a hundred or so other albums in the search. Great video Pete
I found it in perfect condition too. When I bought it.
i love this man
nice bass on this song, on the entire album...my theme album for 1980 along with London Calling
🎵 Dont Worry, Smile and Dance, You just can’t work life out... Don’t let Down Moods entrance you, TAKE THE WINE 🍷 and Shout ❤️”

Powerful!
Pete sin duda es el músico de rock más completo de la historia, compositor, guitarrista, cantante, letrista.. totalmente polifacético !!
great song, right words, written songs from the past
pete songs are timeless, they also fit in today, don't they?!
I know he's had a rough ride. What a gift to The World he's been!
I just confirmed with Simon directly. It is middle Townshend brother, Paul on guitar, not Simon!
Back in the day when you just lip-synced your studio album - poorly - for the video. Only the drummer pulling it off of course The shots of the harmonies are priceless! Fantastic song from a fantastic album.
So that's the studio version obviously, right, just lip-synced?
@@jamesgroome3072 Yep. A singer can't harmonize with himself live.
sounds like Tommy on stereoids.... Amazing!
Nice memories!
He always gave the best when he was angry and fighting his battles. Existentialist notion, but if you know his work, you know it is true.

This album and Face Dances was his writing at peak
I don't think that "who version" is the Who... It sounds like a Pete demo from home.
When I was born in September 1980 I came out singing "Whyyyyyyyyyy was I born today" xP
Gerat song for me to listen to when I'm pissed off.
It's still a lot of fun to listen to Judas Priest's "Sin After Sin" and think about Simon's quiet demeanor in these videos. Folks can fight all they want, I don't get into that, but for my money, Simon's drum work on that album was the best that anybody ever did for JP.
I don't remember hearing this song but, I like it. It's very cool.
Damn that's great!
Pete is a seer!
Good show. Still has the voice and the guitar chops.
imo, this entire album is townsend at his peak...better than anything he contributed to the who.
I LOVE this! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
My life's are mess.haha.Im still here.Decades later.Keep on working.
Townsend is a genius. Tune
Sa plus belle chanson en solo
I stand here at the bar , I’m holding empty glass ...
Why weren't the Who very good in the late 70s and early 80s? Might be because Pete's lps were so good.
This song isn't a tube. But Better, a Masterpiece !
love his falsetto
Townshend isn´t the best composer ever. He´s the only one!
That makes no sense whatsoever.
Looks like a really young Simon Phillips (who drums for Toto now) is borrowing Kenney Jones' drumkit... and the other guitarist is borrowing one of Pete's Les Pauls, and aping some of Pete's moves.
Joe Goes Retro it’s his younger brother, Paul! He’s really over acting! Guess it was intentional. Love it!
Best RANT song ever!
The Who did record this song for the "Who Are You" album. But Pete s solo versión sounds best.
Bless"m All. Ronnie Lane ? Lookin'a you !
I've been there and gone there. I've lived there and bummed there. I've spun there, I gave there. I drank there and I slaved there.
At 4:00 the guy next to Pete is clearly scream singing and you don't hear him at all. Nice to have a music video for this great song, shame the music on screen can't be heard too.
blilliants of emerald blue notes, all 4hits!
I Love Honest Music! Where did it go?
It's funny when Simon Townshend duet's with Pete...they look like twins. Like two fucking Pete Townshends!😂
This was not the Deep End band... This was a couple of years before them. It is definately Simon Townshend on guitar. Rabbit is on keys, Mark B. on drums... but no David Gilmour, etc...
Paul Townshend on guitar, not Simon.

If my poor memory serves, Roger Daltrey in particular had a listen to this album and had a serious "JHC, this was perfect for us" type of reaction.
Can we use this for a pease song ?
this is not live!! Still awesome tune.
Imposible not to stamp your feet .....
I know what I meant. Scandinavia is comprised of Sweden Finland Norway and Denmark
Tony Butler on Bass I think
And Rabbit on keyboards.
Yep, it is.
So sorry for you being star
Hi out there,

I like this drummer. Seems like a brother of Terry Bozzio.

Is that Simon Phillips?
Yes it is.
Is that other guitarist Simon Townshend?
That is not Simon but his other brother, Paul Townshend.
I'm drunk
Is that Pete's younger brother sharing vocals?
It's Paul Townshend
Keith W. Denebeim is it???
That other guitarist looks just like Pete, are they related?
THIS IS NOT EMPTY GLASS...💥🤪
Pete Townshend's Solo albums remind me a lot of what Noel Gallagher is doing now. They are departures from their signature group's albums, but exhibit the breadth of their talents.
Simon when he had hair it looks
Shared opinions may vary.
My life's a mess, I wait for you to pass...
Its Pete's brother Simon can't ya tell from the nose?
No he looks nothing like Pate ! He certainly has none of the talent
Yes, it's Pete's brother Paul...not Simon.
There's a few shots of them together at the microphone where you say, "Oh, yes, I see the resemblance now."
@@Robespierre1758X does he look at kiddie porn too?
No, it's Paul Townshend.
This is a public comment
Great song poorly lip synced
