    Listening to The Who is like watching a drunken elephant stagger from one side of a china shop to the other, without breaking a single dish somehow. Reckless, dangerous, chaotic, perfect. Everybody is playing lead breaks at the same time, but it works somehow. That's The Who.

      Your comment and those that agree seem to lack the view, perception, perspective depth, expression of THE WHO and in particular this song, perhaps their live show presentation, show, energy, etc. 😒
      Not even "Rolling Stone" magazine writers would have lacked such in their description, perception, feeling, expression and depth ... then. 😑
      Thus, the statements are basically foolish nonsense. 😒

    There are just not enough shots of John Entwhistle in this video. Listen to those lines. His musicianship is almost free form playing with Townshend, Moon and Daltrey’s vocals almost simultaneously. Pure genius. I think Entwistle's static stage presence and intricate bass lines held the band together on stage. We'll never know but I think things would have been too chaotic if he'd been leaping around with the rest of them. Entwistle's bass playing on Quadrophenia is sublime.

      Heck, also maybe the best rock album ever. It starts with Baba O'Riley, which as I type in June, 2020, nearly 50 years later, has one of the most frequently used and recognizable riffs,, and ends with Won't Get Fooled Again. The songs in the middle aren't quite at the level of these classics, but there's not a mediocre song on *Who's Next*.
      They were the first band to use volume effectively. They invented metal, or *heavy* metal, as it was called. (You can hear them doing it on later releases of Live at Leeds, especially on the 15 minute version of My Generation). Pete wrote, and the band performed, the first successful rock opera. In their prime they were electrifying. No one has rocked harder. No one has ever had songs to do it. Just an awesome band.

    Best live rock performance ever? It has to be up there doesn't it?
    No doubt that Won't Get Fooled Again is the best rock track ever written (in my opinion) that image of Daltrey as a silhouette in the lights during the sampler section is surely one of the most iconic moments in rock history!

    It's 2021 and looking back The Who was such astonishing amazing band; John's bass, Keith's drums, Roger`s powerful voice and Pete's energy and windmills on stage were so outstanding. Probably why I wrote a paper about them in college. Rock on......

    I thought I saw John move a couple of inches to the left, and then back to standing still again, I could be mistaken?
    But still, the best drummer in the world, and the best bass player in the world, in the same band?
    AWESOME, that's the stuff rock and roll wet dreams are made of!!!!!!!!

    • @geoffpoole483
      @geoffpoole483 4 роки тому +3

      I think he moved an inch and a half, but you were close enough. Entwistle was an absolutely phenomenal bass player. Check Quadrophenia for some examples. I think Entwistle's static stage presence was one reason why the Who have always been such a great live act. Much as I love the Who, I'm not sre all four of them leaping around on stage would have worked.
