Maybe it is possible that you're thinking about each other even if you don't have connections for many years. If the person always crosses your mind even if you're busy. They may also think about you. Maybe the only thing that prevents you from contacting each other..is you're both in a relationship. I believe it is possible to have an affection for someone for a lifetime even without connection.

And another reason is a trauma bond= when a person forms a deep emotional attachment with someone that causes them harm.
