- www.timothyseaman.com Timothy Seaman explores a new instrumental arrangement of an old Appalachian folk hymn with anonymous words found in the shape-note hymnal Southern Harmony, in the 1854 edition. On his Dusty Strings D600 hammered dulcimer he uses almost the entire range of the instrument in his pianistic separated-hands approach, reaching for an expression of the words below.
For a detailed discussion of how this arrangement was done, see Timothy's blog entry here: timothyseaman.com/index.php/ti....
Behold, behold the Lamb of God
On the cross, on the cross!
He sheds for you his precious blood
On the cross, on the cross!
Oh, hear his all-important cry,
'Eloi, lama sabachthani!'
Draw near and see your savior die
On the cross, on the cross!
Behold his arms extended wide
On the cross, on the cross!
Behold his bleeding hands and side
On the cross, on the cross!
The sun withholds his rays of light,
The heavens are clothed in shades of night,
While Jesus doth with devils fight
On the cross, on the cross!
Come, sinners, see him lifted up
On the cross, on the cross!
For you he drinks the bitter cup
On the cross, on the cross!
The rocks do rend, the mountains quake,
While Jesus doth atonement make,
While Jesus suffers for our sake
On the cross, on the cross!
And now the mighty deed is done
On the cross, on the cross!
The battle's fought, the victory's won
On the cross, on the cross!
To heaven he turns his languid eyes,
''Tis finished,' now the concquerer cries,
Then bows his sacred head and dies
On the cross, on the cross!
Where'er I go I'll tell the story
Of the cross, of the cross!
Of nothing else my soul shall glory
Save the cross, save the cross!
Yea, this my constant theme shall be
Through time and in eternity
That Jesus tasted death for me
On the cross, on the cross!
Let every mourner rise and cling
To the cross, to the cross!
Let every Christian come and sing
Round the cross, round the cross!
There let the preacher take his stand,
And, with the Bible in his hand,
Declare the triumphs through the land
Of the cross, of the cross!

Lovely, musical dulcimer playing. I could listen for hours.
Your dynamics and expression is rare in the hammered dulcimer world. Beautiful!!! I wish I had your accuracy.
Amazing! And great forget gem of a hymn
The first time I ever heard this song! Very beautiful! Thank you for being so talented and posting it for us to enjoy! God bless you real well!

What a blessing to see/hear you play!
no kidding
sounds stellar
What a powerful and beautiful song! It was very moving....
I always loved the sound of this instrument and this is the first time I've actually seen it played. I can only guess as to it's played by note or through repetition and learning songs by ear. I play keyboard and guitar by ear or notes and know music theory inside out. Thanks for sharing this video I love it.
Beautiful
So well played !

What is your recording chain? I saw an AKG in the other video. Thanks
Sorry for the delayed reply! I don't check YT comments enough. In 2014, I believe I was using a pair of AKG 1000s with batteries and feeding the wires into the input of the camera itself. They are very sweet sounding microphones!
I looked for a video of this song that had words but I didn't find one. Are there lyrics to this song?
I found this hymn in an old shape-note book, and it probably is known nowadays to almost no one. However, if you will click on 'show more' below the video you will see that I did go to the trouble to put all the words there when I made the video.
Thank you! I hadn't thought to look in the description. Absolutely beautiful lyrics. It's a shame it's not sung by modern churches.
@@jamesbarker438 I do have a 'lead sheet' of melody, words, and suggested chords, in pdf form if you're interested. Pdfs can only be sent in emails, though, or FB messaging between 'friends', so if you want you can ask for that in one of those ways. Many blessings! Sorry for the three year delay....
