takanti and you can even keep some BAH living on base if you’re married. A lot of bases have different types and areas of housing and you won’t pay your entire BAH to live there.
My pay as an E1 in 1969 was $93 a month. Combat pay was $55 a month. Fortunately I was an E5 in Nam. We did eat very well at base camp - lots of steaks.
At that time it would have been around $700~ give or take if translated to 2021-2022. Still a lot considering all other expenses were “lower” back then too.
It's been a long time since I was in service, but as I recall, your check was used mostly for drinking. Easiest way to save money in the military is to avoid bars.
When I joined the air force, my first assignment was in a small air station in Germany which was located in the Ardennes Forest were the Battle of the Bulge took place. Didn't have a car for three years but saved a lot of money to tour all over Europe. The large air base located one hour south of us had a lot of tours all over Europe. When I mean tours I'm not talking about military tours. I'm talking about tour buses for tourist. In all I've been to many places than the people in that air station that I've worked with who are married, living off base paying rent, gas and vehicle maintenance. While the single guys wasting their money on alcohol and partying a lot and getting drunk all the time since they never cart you in Germany even if your under 18 years of age. It was my best assignment of my entire 20 year career. The funny thing is that my brother, a retired CPO, told me not to join the Navy but the air force. Thank god for that suggestion.
I'm an old Airman too. I started getting into photography about 8 years ago. I wish, instead of the car and tv, I would have started that when I was a young Airman. If I could do it over, I would not buy the car and tv, but an SLR camera and taken classes. Back then, it was on film and we didn't have UA-cam to learn from. Also, I also wanted a pilot's license, which I took one lesson but my car payment kept me from getting that. I would rather now have the license as the car has long been crushed and recycled.
Lol this comment is gold, I quit drinking while in, best decision, got out with a fat savings from 3 deployments and such, able to pay my first and last plus security in Massachusetts cash, and still had plenty as a reserve, my savings now is even bigger cause I have a bachelors and masters and work in cyber security which pays healthy, military can set you up very well, plus the GI Bill BAH i got, I pocketed it all my entire degree
They need something like this for boot camp. Basic financial management is very important and usually gets overlooked. I’m really impressed with you. Thanks for the great video!!
@@Max-nu1bd What? Service members all make the same based on grade. E-3 in the Marines makes the same as a E-3 in the Chair Force. You need to sit down with your Platoon Sergeant and have a period of instruction about the military pay scale, Devil.
I really appreciate you being so open about your pay. Most people keep their checks and bills extremely secret. This is fascinating for both the military aspect and the expenses aspect.
Taxes don't pay anything except the debt you were born into which goes to a secret group of private people who own your federal reserve which has the right to just create any amount of money they want out of thin air... So when America pays for something it first created debt to do so. There is not enough money in the world to EVER pay off this debt because the debt comes FIRST WITH INTEREST already tagged on... You were born into economic slavery and will always be an economic slave unless the entire system collapses and resets... Good luck.
My friend , was in air force and rented 3 bedroom house for $1,800/ month. With 2 other Sr. Airmen getting $1,200/ month a piece. Basically they had blow out parties every 2 weeks. And invited the neighbors.
The Navy took great care of me and my family. In fact, I don't know any of my friends that had a problem with the pay. It's a great career for those who take advantage of what's offered.
@Randall Taylor It actually is. I'm almost 11 years Active, own 1 rental property and a Tesla. Will be purchasing a second property once I finish my 3 years in Japan. You ever been to Japan? It's great.
This helped a ton. I was considering joining the Navy or Marines but my girlfriend is pregnant with my first born. She recommended the Air Force saying it more family friendly, also her Grandparents and Parents all did 20-25 years, each earning the Rank of E-7. One of my biggest concerns with the pay and opened my eyes.
My dad struggled like a mofoer to feed a family of 6 in the Army for 20 yrs of service BUT we were happy growing up, That’s why i drive a truck for a living, i saw what he went thru and i never will do that but i make $80,000 + a year, $6,667 a month, $3,333 every 2 weeks, wake up when i want, go out on the road 5 day’s at a time come home for 3 day’s, get 31 day’s paid vacation a year @ $200 per day. Best advice for military life: DO NOT GET MARRIED AND/OR HAVE KIDS TO GET OUT OF THE BARRACKS. If you do get married, make sure they have a job as well. That's the only way it's worth it.
Yes, but an important aspect is that anything that was labeled "pay" is taxed, while anything labeled "allowance" is tax-free. If you are married and not living in the barracks, it takes a LONG time before you base pay exceeds your BAH, so the majority of your income ends up being tax-free. But the other half of that is that the junior guys will be getting their lodging and food provided, so all the rest of that pay is entirely disposable other than their cell bill and their insurance for their car. Also remember that healthcare is provided, and Navy docs are stellar. Even better with Flight Surgeons at squadrons because they are like super stars. And if mil docs cannot treat you, you get referred out to civilian specialists at no cost.
I was in the Corps in the 70's/80's, was surprised then to learn a sergeant I knew with wife and kids was getting and needed food stamps. I still believe people in the military SHOULD NOT BE PAYING TAXES - LIFE, LIMBS AND SANITY ought to be enough !!! SEMPER FI !
@@xaviergonzalez8632 XG, GREAT - YOU GOT MY POINT. BUT, ITS EVEN GREATER TO FLY HUEYS AND GET PAID FOR IT ! PERFECT FOR A KID WITH NO CONNECTIONS OR "INS" AND WITH A DESIRE FOR AN ADRENALIN RUSH. I NEVER INQUIRED ABOUT THE PAY - JUST WANTED TO SCREAM, AKA WOP-WOP-WOP, ACROSS THE TREE TOPS WITH THE DOORS OPEN. LIFE IS FRUSTRATINGLY BORING NOW, I.E. STANDING IN CHECKOUT LINES WHILE DIPSHITS FIDDLE WITH COUPONS AND COIN PURSES AND WHILE OTHER ASSHOLES DON'T TURN RIGHT ON RED ETC, ETC, ETC ( THE LITTLE THINGS REALLY ARE THE BIG THINGS ). ITS LIKE LIVING WITH THE WALKING DEAD OUT HERE !!! I KEEP WONDERING HOW MUCH MORE I CAN TAKE BEFORE I BLOW. MY FEAR : SOME DAY SOMEONES GONNA BEEP AND THAT'S GONNA BE THE END OF THE BOTH OF US. SEMPER FI !
This sounds cold hearted but that's totally on the sergeant. No one in the military should ever find themselves in a situation to need food stamps and if they do it's completely due to bad planning on their part. Yes there may be exceptions but the majority it's due to lack of planning ahead. Are service members underpaid for what they do and go through? Absolutely and then some. But the simple fact it is, the pay is what it is. All the tools are available to all members to plan accordingly. Pay scales, housing allowances based on with or without dependents, bonuses, etc. It's the service member's responsibility to make informed decisions and when and if to get married and whether or not to have kids. Does the spouse work or not work and what kind of work if they do? And I can tell you from an LPO standpoint, having a junior sailor (I was Navy) with these kinds of issues can be a real stressful burden.
i can't believe you have to pay taxes... the military already devalues an enlisted's life, now you have to give more money back for putting your neck on the line. Shame
They pay on base pay but not allowances like COLA, housing & food (BAS). If you get deployed to certain areas, then you have tax free plus hostile fire, hazardous duty pay. Don't sailers get sea pay when you're on a ship? I'm an Air Force vet.
you have to pay federal tax but if youre on base you dont have to pay tax at the commissary/exchange. however you have to pay taxes at civilian stores, but some may give you a military discount
I can see why you'd think that but when you're in the military your life is literally free, a normal person would be spending his entire paycheck to get by with $500 extra each month. But since he doesn't have to pay any expenses then everything after tax is pocketed and not going anywhere.

You really try to grasp and obtain the best you can do. I appreciate and respect that kind of effort. Keep up the great work.
The fact of the matter is that the military has never been the road to riches- ever. That's not a American thing; just the way it is. You'll get paid nearly nothing in exchange for some good benefits down the road.
@Univac I was Air Force and it's not like we were stuck on a ship together. I have no idea how that is in the Navy. I nearly went Navy but it was seeing an Air Force base when I was 16 that help my decision.
Unless you get into real estate/investing while you're enlisted. There's videos on UA-cam. I'm in the process of getting my real estate license, and hoping to enlist in the next year or so. I plan on doing real estate related stuff while enlisted.
This is pretty accurate, I was in the military from 2004-2010. After my I finished by BT, I decided to be a ranger, I went to rangers training (3/75). My first year pay check was ok was making about 30k a year, second year in the military (when I actually got deployed) and went on consent missions, it shot up to 38k. After it was all said and done (and after 3 deployments) I was making a little over 48k a year. I loved being a ranger but the greatest thing about it was now I have full health coverage, my college was free, I majored in IT because I was the lead comm's and was always trying to fix my radio (taking it apart etc). Now I make over 200k a year with full health coverage for life, USAA memebership for life, etc. I loved the military, and would do it all over again if I went back in time.
St. Bakre GI do it!!! I recently got out of Ranger School. It sucks but it’s fun. Basic is a breeze, just get some patience (cuz it’s truly boring 🤣🤣🤣)... Schools are where the fun are. Big Army is where the fun begins. Good luck!!!
I was a journeyman electrician in Texas building new homes. I made less than you, paid rent and more bills. Military pay isn't that bad compared to a real civilian career considering covered costs.
I watched a documentary on one of the carriers on PBS. The Captain mentioned that with the hours a Sailor puts in on deck, his or her final hourly pay is about $9.
@@kevinquintanar104 Yeah I remember those days lol that's before taxes hahaha Edit. Jesus Christ I have selective reading lol I didn't read the month part.
Very excellent presentation. Thank you. There are other benefits that are included that apply to those who are career military. Retired pay, Medical benefits, to name a few. I retired at 38 years old with 21 years service and it is certainly nice to have those two benefits for life.
woah you guys are underpaid!! Here in Canada, the base pay for an E-1 Equivalent is $2985 without all the other expenses. The E-4 equivalent at a 4 year seniority is $6419! Base pay!
It comes down to making wise financial decisions. My son loves the military and we were just watching the Navy recruiting. Thank you for breaking down the finance
the girl in the video is the same girl that records him at the house. assuming she is also in the military and they are living together, you can conclude that he is sharing a rent or mortgage with someone else.
Jacob Wright or a mortgage. I always buy wherever I get stationed and rent it out when I leave. The place I just left the mortgage was $775 (136k/30 yrs/3.275% interest) and now that place is rented for $1425, giving me $650 profit, $500 after insurance etc. I’ve done this 5 times now. Each place was bought $0 down on VA loans, and it averages out to $500/month profit per property per month. On top of that I’m an e6 over 10 (base 3.8k/mon, bah 2k/mon, bas 300/mon, etc...) which leaves me with $8600/mon before taxes. The house I just bought was $224k so $980/mon mortgage and it’ll rent for $1700 when I leave in 3 years. Giving me an additional $800/mon so $9400/mon income assuming I don’t get promoted and my pay remains exactly the same. So the military can definitely be worth it. Or you could do what everyone else does and pay rent to someone like me and waste your money.
I spent 10 years on active duty and would later use my military service to help get into Federal Job. It would take several years, but I would later earn more money in 1 year than I did the entire time I was on active duty.
Man when I was an Army recruiter I was making over $70k a year. Base pay, BAH was $1,598 a month for a single E-6, I got $320 a month BAS, $75 a month REA and $450 a month special duty pay. I was living the good life and I was just fresh off my 3rd combat deployment that was 15 months long.
My base pay was $3530 + $1598 + $320 + $450 + $75 = $5973 a month x 12 = $71,676. And my base pay is the only thing taxed. After I was medically separated I still make $3492 a month in VA disability compensation because I’m 100% total and permanent disabled service connected disabled.
I remember back in the 80s guys saying recruiting duty was about the toughest job in the Army. Career killer if you didn't make your quota. Real glad I was able to avoid that shit.
PO2 and no warfare pins?? Freakin MA's lol Once you make E5 life gets pretty good. But yes, with some fiscal responsibility you can be very well off in the military. I was absolutely balling as an E4 because the only bills I had were my cell phone, insurance, and food. I could walk to the shipyards from my barracks so I didn't really even have a consistent gas bill. I wasn't making much, but I pocketed like 90% of it every month.
I'm a navy veteran 100% Perm & Total Service-connected. Keep doing what you do shipmate. Awesome job! Don't forget to advise on planning for after the military. Taking care of my unforseen injuries while in service greatly benefited the road to my va compensation. Just a thought. Good job. Very creative in your videos.
Wow, pay sure has gone up since I was in. I actually made less than minimum wage when I went in. Buying a car was only a dream on a private's paycheck :). Then again, I didn't have to contribute to my college fund (and the GI Bill was the main reason I could afford college). I'm glad there are still kids out there that consider the military service.
It’s all about knowing how to manage money looks like, cause they provide a whole bunch to you it’s just about saving what you get & buying what you need.
Yato_ Pickle If you take that money and stick it in a mutual fund and keep adding money in there by the time you retire you won’t have to worry about not being financially secure
I joined the Navy in 1958, I was making $38.00 every two weeks, I made one pay grade (E3), after 2 years longevity I was making $60.00 every two weeks. Honorably separated in 1962, my pay at the end of my enlistment was $120.00 per mo.
In 1966 I found myself in the US Army and my military pay was a joke since I could have made 5 times more as a civvie. Now, I am not so sure because the workplace is so competitive and labor is under the heel of business. Benefits have improved greatly but weren't non-existent then. Had I more free time and a place to go I suppose I would have needed more money. When I reached ETS the Army paid me off in twenties and I slept in airports all the way across the country with what was a pretty large sum in those days. Those were good days.
Me and my two bestfriends decided to join the military, and we didn't even tell each other. None of us knew that the other ones wanted to join. As of RN. One of those bestfriends is in navy bootcamp right now, my other bestfriend is leaving for marine bootcamp in may. And I'm leaving for navy bootcamp in a year.

@@LukeSwagwalker if you fancy a nice car, leasing isnt bad. you've got no debt, the payment is way lower than buying, and if you want to get a newer car at the end, you can. or you can just buy the car outright at the end and continue the payment for another 3 years. if you dont fancy a nice car, dont take out a loan. just save up some cash and yea buy a car around that price point but for CASH!
I spent 6 years in the USAF & completed my education while on active duty. When I was an E1, I drove an old car that was mechanically sound & people thought I was a loser. I graduated with my degree and began my business career at 24. Again, I drove basic vehicles & invested as much as I could with my pay. I became semi-retired (work whenever I feel like it, not because I need to) since turning 50 years-old. I guess I get the last laugh. Net Pay - Debt = Net worth (real wealth) not what kind of car you are making payments on.
I had the best time in the military had a lot of free time and didn’t have to drive to work in rush hour traffic. It paid pretty good had no complaints. If I stayed in could of retired 15 years ago now I’m still working. Stay in boys. You’re not going to end up ahead of the game leaving the military medical is free in the military yeah you won’t need it when you’re 20 but telling you’ll need it when you get older and paying for medical insurance on the outside is expensive. Hind sight is always 20/20.
Just give me three hots and a cot !! Another aspect of consideration, you don't pay a thing "0" for medical and dental and vision, you can shop the commissary and exchange, you have a gym free, MWR offerings on the base...rental camping, boating, travel, movie theater, bowling alley, golf course, just to name a few. Plus if you marry it covers your spouse and children. Education benefits, retirement after 20 years which allows you to continue to use all your benefits. ..... and cola goes up every year, not to mention pay increases granted by the government. ... but hey who cares about the money, we serve because we love it !
We get food in the field but it still comes as our bas that gets pulled out of our pay at 400$/mo and boss trips are all cost effective but you still pay to go. Yes dental etc is somewhat free but we have it because we wouldnt be able to afford it on certain operations . We get to go to the gym for free and just because it's a commissary doesn't mean it's better than Walmart lol. Yeah some of its great pay wise or what we get because we enlisted but need uniforms etc or extra besides the ones issued at basic you have to pay for at 120/ uniform without cap and everything needs patches name tapes or us. Army patches, pins for PC etc. Also I havent been home in 2 christmases and new years so I dont want to hear about Pay etc or the free stuff we get. If I wanted to go home I'd have to pay about 1000 for round trip plus anything. Anything lost in the field or stolen by someone you gotta pay yourself whether it be a 600$ gas mask or something worth more it's a no pay due or anything etc. They accidentally pay you extra they immediately take your paychecks after. It's not all free like you think it is
Great video for teaching how to save money. Most people don't save and just blow their monies. I love to see people save for what they've worked hard for and have money saved for a house and retirement because those things are important. Love that you have kept your older car that's paid for. Very wise.
bret hammond guess thats subjective. And depends where you go, I’ve seen soldiers get away with pretty long hair on top. They’ve had to gel it to stay in their PCs.
My biggest recommendation is to stay out of unnecessary debt. Technology changes so fast that by the time you pay it off, that 8k tv is out of date. I spent money on a ski trip to Austria when I was stationed in the UK. I would do that again in a heartbeat. The car & tv are long gone but the memories I still have.
In 1960 as e1 I received 78$ a month, free housing in the barracks, and free chow, + a uniform allowance. When I retired it was about 50% base and 50 % allowances.
Yea but calculate the inflation for that and its $809.61 today. Still not a lot however the military has never been paid enough imo. People are out there risking their lives making barely more than you’d make working a full time minimum wage job.
BAS Does not increase with rank my friend. Also, Married members receive BAS regardless. Also OHA is given to you in lieu of BAH when you're overseas. The difference is that BAH is a Fixed rate, OHA varies and they will only give you up to the amount of your rental. BAH You get it regardless.

Pre nuptial... cut that bitch out
So dumb service members get taxed but congress won't even pay tax
Because we are living in corrupted society ~
And if mil docs cannot treat you, you get referred out to civilian specialists at no cost.

even more so if they are active at the time
This sounds cold hearted but that's totally on the sergeant.

Ooh Rah!
My brother was a Senior chief and retired with 28 yrs in San Diego.
We're proud of his service and jealous of his car collection
@Patty Frisk a feast to be had... I was a Marine.
EXACTLY!
@@ronthompson2366 Sometimes we even got a hot meal in the field and a shower.... LOL I miss those days
Very wise.
The intro was the hardest flex ever
had to do it to em
Ohhh, the navy, that explains the hair...
bret hammond guess thats subjective. And depends where you go, I’ve seen soldiers get away with pretty long hair on top. They’ve had to gel it to stay in their PCs.
bret hammond unless you’re a woman then they don’t give a shit.
What is that suppose to mean?
Sam Jalinous “rightfully so” lmao

My biggest recommendation is to stay out of unnecessary debt. Technology changes so fast that by the time you pay it off, that 8k tv is out of date. I spent money on a ski trip to Austria when I was stationed in the UK. I would do that again in a heartbeat. The car & tv are long gone but the memories I still have.
In 1960 as e1 I received 78$ a month, free housing in the barracks, and free chow, + a uniform allowance. When I retired it was about 50% base and 50 % allowances.
HELLO
IN 1969 A E-2 WAS GETTING $116.00 A MONTH 😭😭😭😭
Richard Hudak Hello, in 1945 it was $45, quit whining rich boy.....
Yeah but that was a lot of money back then.
Yea but calculate the inflation for that and its $809.61 today. Still not a lot however the military has never been paid enough imo. People are out there risking their lives making barely more than you’d make working a full time minimum wage job.
Is that before or after inflation?
Richard Hudak.... e3 in 78 ...220 a month...
BAS has nothing to do with marital status.
@@VW6722 It does. If you're single and you have a mess hall facility, you don't get BAS but you are required(expected) to eat in the mess hall. If you're married, then you get BAS and if you go to the mess hall facility, you need to pay out of pocket. At least that's how it is in the US Coast Guard.
Source: It's my life.... every day.
@@VW6722 You can go check out DOD 7000.14-R, VOLUME 7A, CHAPTER 25 .
@@PedroGonzalez-fv5ut wrong. In the Navy if you are on sea duty you do not get BAS. Doesnt matter if you are married or not. I will give you the single military member with messing facility vs married in a shore duty situation.
With the present inflation, a young physically capable and mentally adaptable person can do well in the military. Many, many positions in the military are non-combat roles and are absolutely essential. Having room and board plus food paid for is HUGE nowadays. Many very smart people go into the military with regards to science and engineering.
I feel like those in service should be exempted from paying taxes, considering they signed their lives over to protecting their country.
Elena Wellington it’s actually not that bad. There’s no real danger only in specific times. Plus they get compensated fairly.Trump creates jobs so that’s why he didn’t have to pay millions In taxes. He’s so smart he probably paid those new hiree with the money he didn’t pay for taxes .
@@wfijvddjjklngfdgh1747 theirs always danger thats why things like hazardous duty pay exist. hell thats why veterans come back missing limbs. also trump didnt file taxes because he didn't earn any personal money and is living off his companies finances which is technically illegal.
@@deathbunny1718 he donates his salary, other than that there is little to no expenses the president has to pay. He is not doing anything illegal
@@64422ar so i was talking about before he became president . before his presidency trump was famous for not paying taxes he did this by not taking a salary from his business's and instead used money from a corporate banking account and misused the funds. this allows him to not spend a dime on taxes and use his wealth. it's a common tactic of large business owners but is still highly illegal , as it is embezzlement and tax fraud .
i am happy to find out though he is donating his salary to good causes .imo he isn't the worst president , and i'm waiting to see how he'll fair in the history books.
But nobody forced them to join the army.
Dude, this video from start to finish was very helpful and was funny AF!
Man of all the videos of military pays that are in the internet in my opinion yours is one of the best
Thanks man I appreciate it a lot
My base pay as an E-1 in 1982 was 411 a month...good times. Plus..you got paid in cash, you had to report to the paymaster, salute and they would give you cash. in basic, we had to immediately convert the cash to traveler's checks. eventually they started the direct deposit...good times!
Know of a navy friend who was married and went geo bachelerate while living in the barracks , pocketing all his BAH and some of his comrats too through his whole enlistment.
ayee smart guy
I'm sad to say right now in 2019 as a police officer, I am making what I used to make 7 years ago in the Army
Where in the country are you an officer?

All of You dissin the military are pretty much the civilians we gotta protect lolol
Well the civilians get raxed literally just to be alive for our soldiers to be underpaid and mistreated.
"protect" as if the military is actually needed in its current state. That's laughable
Urriso I don’t think the military gets underpaid at all. it’s enough no need to spoil
@@davidh376 these men and women are risking there lives Dailey to avoid a hell you or I have ever scene. Without our military your life would change dramatically for the worse....... Thank you to all service members.
TrippyKick legend I’m in the marines... I know
60k a year is what all of us civilians fight for after college, and we would have to apply 100s of times. We can’t even imagine making half of that as a newly grad highschool dude. I don’t plan on gaining liabilities so this would be a healthier lifestyle, i’d be young, off drugs, organized, and prepared for college.
best of all there is housing, decent medical care, and food 3 times a day, thats luxury on top of what you’re getting paid.
As a PFC in the Marine Corps going to the field for weeks at a time as artillery crewman meant I was working up to 20 hrs. daily. At the time I was making $490 a paycheck. In the Marine Corps you'll never see BAH or any other incentives unless your an E-6 and above, which means at least 6+ years in. So for a year and a half I was literally making about $1.50 an hour lmao The government owns you, don't expect to make money.
$1900 divided by 2? “I’m horrible at math” really brotha really

When I joined in 99 my base pay was like 860 as a E1 haha. When I got out as a E5 at 10 years it was 2860 plus another 1600 or so for living in town. Then the tax free and danger pay on deployment was nice plus the sea pay
That is a very high cellphone bill. I'm paying 45 dollars a month for just one so I really hope you are paying for more than one cellphone atleast.
