Putz houses were a part of my childhood as my mom set out a “village” on top of our cardboard (!) fireplace each Xmas. She laid cotton on the fireplace mantle and then cut a circle out and put a little mirror on/under that - to give the illusion of a lake/pond! Then, the mantle village consisting of Putz houses, a musical church and various little figures and bottle brush trees were nestled all along the cottage. Thus, the Putz Xmas village was complete (and seemed so magical to me as a child). Sadly, none of the houses were saved, which resulted in me purchasing 4 at an estate sale many years ago! So, Putz houses in a (smaller size) continue to be a part of my own little Xmas now! I still do the little mirror/lake in my village as well! Now you’ve given me another wonderful way to make and incorporate even more Putz houses, in such a tiny scale - thank you! Yes totally you would have. I feel like my grandma had some for her tree, but it wasn't until I was an adult that I really took notice of them when I came across some at an antique store!
These houses are so cute, I may need to borrow this idea. I also want to get some of that white sand as well, so much cheaper than buying snow flocking. Great ideas 👍👍
yes by all means...borrow the idea! Yes that sand it so great and inexpensive..I use it a lot because it's a little more chunky than a fine sand and so it piles on top of each other well and you don't have to use that much to get good coverage.
oh yes for sure! For me I am always concerned about space so this is a great way to display and also store away giving you shelf space and then you can enjoy it every year!

Okay, I'm dead with these teensy houses. I have a couple of vintage houses and a ton of reproduction houses. Vintage figurines and too many trees. haha Every Christmas my entire dining room table is covered. Plus, faux snow.

I was telling my mom that the make a Christmas Tree shaped shelving system that is specifically for Christmas Villages so it looks like a Tree but it holds the village and WOW, I thought it was a cool ides. I agree, a crafter can never have too much glitter, lol. Maybe a tiny piece of fabric softener sheet in the bag will stop the foam beads sticking to each other.

My parents had those Japanese houses (in 1940!) and then in the 1970's I found some for 25c each in a thrift store. I sold them about 15 years ago when I was moving. I miss them and now I can't afford to buy them. Maybe I can make them!

Ah! I have a Putz story for you. My grandparents,they had 5 or 6 of them,and would,of course place them out At Christmas time. And do you know what? My mom and her older sister HATED them!!! Apparently,they thought they looked so cheap and chintzy. In fact,I think that they were eventually just discarded,when the family was going through all their stuff,after my grandparents passed away. But here’s the thing: My grandparents were married in 1937,it was the Great Depression,they were poor,and these little houses were all they could afford,they were their first Christmas decorations as a newly married couple. They cherished them,but the appreciation skipped a generation,apparently,so the baby boomer sons and daughters let them just go into the trash. Isn’t that sad?😞
I can tell you,the little Putz houses were purchased in Oberlin,Ohio,a town a few miles south of Lorain Ohio,at a Benjamin Franklin five and dime store. That store still exists to this day,it is one of only a few left remaining.
