So basically RM wrote 'Joke' to mock rappers who were hating on him saying he can't rap (and also BTS were making at that time songs on more 'softer' side). He showed them that: cool he can also rap like them with lyrics that don't make sense at all and just rap fast...

RM is fascinating. He has so much out there - do a part 2 with "Do You", "Moonchild", "Change"... so, so much. He writes most of their lyrics and the concepts largely come out of his brain as well. Namjoon is BTS. Obviously all 7 are essential to be what they are and live the concepts, but the tone and the messages are him. Mad respect.

I relate to you with almost crying to Seoul sm, RM is called the philosopher who raps for a reason, he’s able to articulate how he feels exactly but still generalising it just enough so that almost every human could relate to his lyrics, It’s been 5 years since I’ve moved away from my home country and even tho I like the city I’m living in now, I can’t help but feel a weird type of hatred for it BCZ I associate it with the painful parts of growing up while I associate my home country with childhood and happiness

the thing that made bang pd hire namjoon was his wordplay and lyricism, he's the start point of bts and may i say it couldn't be better! he's so good at making speeches and writing songs with deep and/or double meanings

namjoon has always been heavily into the lyricism of his songs but people (who think rap is just about being fast) have tried to diss him about stuff like that. so 'joke' is just a raw display of his rap skills (super speed, flow changes at least 6 times, etc). it's satire with him calling it meaningless wordplay in the song itself. VERY SEXY OF HIM ACTUALLY !!!

One of the things I love about BTS rap line especially RM & SUGA is they get real and raw with their lyrics and swear, break things down and go all out. K-pop idols are meant to be above reproach, perfect and pure, and it’s testament to their relationship with BANG PD that they negotiated to do their solo stuff in a more real format. 💜

37:37 yeaaah, namjoon for a long time had this battle of not knowing who he truly was, bc when he started after leaving the underground hiphop scene people started saying that he was "just" an idol, but for him he was an artist who could do way more than the kpop industry wants from idols, so he started struggling with this dilemma of "idol, rapper, artist" in one of his livestream a time ago he finally said that he's just him doing what he wants to do, and in the song idol he sang "you can call me artist, can call me idol, call me whatever you want, i don't care" and a year later they dropped persona, showing that he's now confident in who he is!! ( my opinion: he's a freaking g.o.a.t, the man can do EVERYTHING)

I loved this! (Happy birthday RM!)
FYI he was only 20 years old when he wrote Joke, it’s unbelievable how talented he was even back then. I think he still had a lot of anger inside him at that time (from his so called “friends” who didn’t support his career choices), which mellowed out a bit as he grew up. I think Bicycle and Seoul are more representative of his solo music style, he loves chill, melodic, introspective songs. Even his first 2015 mixtape that joke is on is quite evenly balanced between slow/chill songs and aggressive ones like Joke.
There are several essays that could be written about Persona, so I won’t go too into it (you can watch an explanation video if interested?) but basically the whole album is inspired by Carl Jung’s theory that the human personality is divided into a persona (the side of ourselves that we show the world), our shadow (the side we keep hidden and are scared/ashamed of) and the ego (the side that we see and accept as our identity). So RM is literally asking himself the question of who he is, especially his stage name RM vs the person Kim Namjoon, and what is “real”? (As seen by the freaky giant CGI version of him!) And he comes to the conclusion that ”I just want to give you all the shoulders when you cry”.

Rj, you really said range with this selections of songs. I really appreciate that! For the "joke", the title is already telling so much. Basically RM describes this song as a meaningless wordplay. But even that song had it's own meaning to it. Rm just wanted to show off his rapping skills, changes of flow, wordplay. The are some bars in this song but for me I would describe it as auditory pleasure. Maybe that feeling is intensified for me because even with english subs and some context I can't fully understand the lyrics as I'm not a Korean speaker.

The intro for every BTS album except for 1 is a solo song. Before the album or title music video is released BTS do "Comeback trailers" which instead of normal trailers like most groups is actually that solo intro track along with it's own music video. Back in the old days BTS didn't have money for another music video and they were all animated and because they were still hip-hop focused it was always the rappers who did them. In 2016 they became actual music videos and in 2017 the vocalists started taking turns as well.
"Persona" is one of those "comeback trailer" music videos but all the members have them. The title track is the title track and usually has the most press and gets performed a lot, but the comeback trailer/intro songs are very beloved by fans and are actually much better gauge of the sound and theme of the next upcoming album.
Fun fact! the beginging of "Persona" is actually a sample of an intro RM did for their 3rd album back in 2014 and the animation at the beginning is also a sample of that old school animated video they had. This very much set the tone for the "Map of the Soul" album project where every single song sampled or made lyrical references to a past song. It's the album they did during their 7th year right before Covid. They were going to tour that album and then take a break to work on solo albums but because Covid kept postponing their tour they decided to realease some singles and the "BE" album (that one album without a solo into) and wait and see if they could resume their plans.
Now they release "Proof" thier anthology album and are resuming that original plan

I'm impressed by your honest confusion about RM's writing, and the MVs. They do actually reflect the depth of his work, so, yes, confusing sometimes. Thank you for greeting RM on his birthday too.
One thing I feel urged to say - RM's writing is very personal, and all of these songs reflect the ways he has faced his issues.
Joke is, of course a diss track, addressed to all the many many many critics (one-time peers and "friends" in the hip hop world) who said (sometimes to his face, in public, in settings where he could not respond) that he had "betrayed hip-hop, that idols are not musicians, that how dare he get on stage and do songs he's been given (not actually accurate anyway), and his lyrics are not rap"... much more too. There's a lot of anger there, and a lot of irony, and no one has done it like that. Now, well, guess what, he doesn't need to respond any more ....
Bicycle is a love song to his bike, and is quite a literal exploration of why he likes biking, (not perhaps a very rapper thing to do) and uses it to chill. It's a pretty literal expression of what helps him and supports his mental health. RM is always under an unimaginable amount of pressure, but we hardly ever see any of that ... because he has a bike. Last year he did a Vlive on his birthday and at one point went out of the room and came struggling back in to show us the bike that Jin got him for his nirthday. He was soooo chuffed. Pretty bike, too. Another reason we love him.
I always think Seoul reflects his actual experience of Seoul, often portrayed as a beautiful and glamorous city, but when other young people were out playing in the beautiful areas, he was working, often in buildings that looked very similar - practice, record, practice, eat, dorm, do not rinse, repeat. So, he can appreciate how some others see Seoul, and wants to do that too, but knows only a limited view of the city.
And Persona - yep, you need to look into Map of the Soul, basically. For me, the song (if not ALL aspects of the MV) is very simple and very direct. He questions who he is, what is his real identity, and pares all the different parts of him down to the essence - he just wants to give us all the shoulders when we cry. I find it incredibly moving.
RM bares his soul in his lyrics, with quite incredible bravery, and, more remarkable, he has always done this, even as a young teenage boy. He's been met with a vast amount of hate, but he still shows us his heart.

Mono is a frickin masterpiece and Seoul I would call my go to relax / study/ concentration song. That song is simply magical. Lyrics are what they are ( kinda sad) , but when I play it on repeat ( for hours and hours on no end) I never tire of it, I never grow bored with it.... it just resonates. In other words I have never encountered a song that would feel that RIGHT and would make me THAT relaxed. If a song could be magically transformed into a signature scent, Seoul would be mine :-)

Joke is infact just him flexing his skills and ultimately it doesn't have any message he is trying to send other than dissing them. Although don't be fooled that he is just throwing random things together. while it doesn't have a cohesive subject he talks about, other than dissing those people, It is FULL of wordplay and amazing cadence, flow etc that shows off his rapping skills. So basically how i would take the song is, He is dissing the people that fast rap without any subject but with waaaay better wordplay, flow and cadence to shut them up. Basically saying that "I can do what you do but I'm better at even that"

    Explanation/my interpretation/thoughts on these song’s:
Joke: literally is about meanless wordplay and also to focus on the flow. Suga and RM got a lot of hate/flack for leaving underground to be apart of BTS. People said he could rap or his rap was bad etc. (yes a diss track) So he created this song. Personally I not really a fan of this song. It isn’t a bad song it is very good. This song just isn’t for me.
Persona- connects to Carl Jung theory. I recommend dkdktv explanation.
Seoul- the love/hate relationship with hometown or places we have lived a long time. RM came to Seoul to pursue his dream. When he came to Seoul he has faced many hardships but has made him where his is today. He now sees the beauty of Seoul. It is like a love hate relationship…
Bicycle-perfect song to listen to on a drive or when going Namjooning 😉 (🥾🖼🌳🚲👯‍♀️🏞).
Namjooning (verb or noun) widely used by 50m+ global fans of BTS (S. Korean boy band) to describe mindful enjoyment of exploring art, nature and architecture. Derived from name Kim Namjoon, leader of BTS band who shares his Namjooning on social media.Sep 11, 2021
“The act of living as Kim Namjoon. This includes, taking walks in the park, admiring nature, hanging out with crabs and having fun witty friends” -Kim Namjoon

about people are saying him `don`t rap`... he was supposed to be a businesman as his father, it was his family wish - they planned for him a peaceful rich future as businesman. but from young age he wanted to be a rapper and songwriter. so he started rapping and writing lyrics, his mum even throw out his mic and computer with written texts🤭because she don`t want him to be a rapper and artist in general. family said him that rap and songs do`nt bring him money, even a little bit, they said he couldn`t earn money from music. also not only family said this, his haters also said this to him, that he`s not talented and couldn`t make big money etc. i`m so happy they all was wrong, now he have a lot of money, success and attention, he reseived so much)) i wish he also will be happy on personal life in future because everything else he already have

Bicycle is the one that resonates the most for me. When I was much younger, I was very limited in where I could go or what I could do, but I could ride my bicycle almost anywhere I wanted to go. To get away from the problems in my life, I would get on that bicycle and ride it for hours. It's less about "Hakuna Matata" and more about putting things on hold. Living in the moment, focusing on the physical aspects of riding a bike, like the wheels turning, pedaling, feeling a breeze, the scents and sounds of everything around you. It's a way of hitting the pause button on all of your stress and burdens. All the negative stuff is still there when your bike ride ends, but during the bike ride, it's all suspended and you can take a moment to just breathe. RM does a very good job of describing all of that, but if you've never been there yourself, it can be a bit difficult to really understand what he means. Like most of his songs, it's very deep.

RM has evolved as an artist and human being which is evident in the different chapters of his catalogue. Throughout BTS’s career they have been constantly bombarded with hateful criticism and early on, it deeply affected RM which influenced the cyphers and his first mixtape. Persona follows RM and Bangtan using Jungian psychology to help reconcile and express their feelings as the now super global band they are and as individuals experiencing the host of emotions associated with that. RM is in many ways the heart and brain of BTS and his inner struggles (if love and hate are the same words - I Love You Seoul , I hate you Seoul) permeate their sound, philosophy and intention - he is still reconciling those feelings as they evolve with his ongoing life experiences - it’s a lifetime endeavor … he’s a very precious human being.

Joke actually is a diss track aimed at all the rappers at the time that were talking shit about him. They were saying he wasn’t a real rapper bc he was an idol and would rap “slow” in some of BTS’s group songs. It’s a Joke and he’s using satire by rapping very fast while sounding at times like he was speaking nonsense how all those rappers do. But being him lol he actually used layer upon layer of deeper meaning and double entendre so he basically did what those other rappers do but better. Those rapper might spit fast but they’re saying nothing. RM can spit fast and say multiple things with each verse.

That deep dark dirty beat in Joke is actually a sample from "Oh My Darling (Don't Cry)" by the hiphop/rap duo Run The Jewels (aka Killer Mike & EI-P)... I definitely prefer Joke though. 😄 I'm really only familiar with Killer Mike as an activist and Bernie supporter though, American rap is just a little too much for me these days in general... I was very happy to have found rappers like RM, Suga & JHope... made me love the genre again.

RM is the most versatile of the rap line. He switches his style and flow a lot. RM’s playlist “Mono” would absolutely resonate with you. He always has been and his music is so important to me and my life. That said Namjoon is comfort and Mono is Namjoon. His first mixtape feels very much Rap Monster which is so great. Do not get me wrong. I play it loud and proud all the time. Mono feels less like RM or Rap Monster and much more like him showing us Kim Namjoon and it is comforting the way he is.

RM dissing the haters who says you're rapping slow and soft, you don't have skills like rapping fast etc. And RM trying to say "yeah i can rap fast and i have so many skills but if you're write your meaningless lyrics just for rhyme and flow we are not the same level." Cause he's the type of rapper who really care meanings. Also he's using meaningless things in lyrics but still has the message. I mean yeah he's my man 10 out of 10.

For "persona's" ending with all these CG "humans" I interpret it as: maybe public sees me (rm) or us (bts) as these unnatural creations, that look the same and do the same thing like a robots or machines, but I want to stand out as an individual, or I want to change the norm/stereotype, that world expects me to be like everyone else, but I want to live as I want. Because RM is not standing in a row with these "humans", he's standing in a middle. He's not doing the same moves as them. And although he's wearing a suit as them, his outfit seems more casual, untacked shirt, loose tie, open jacket. All this makes me think of wanting to be unique, wanting to me seen as individual, not conforming to the norms.

Actually "Joke" RM is the answer to "Come Here" Masta Wu ft dok2, Bobby (2014) ..
You can understand the lyrics of "Joke" if you look at the lyrics of "Come Here" and the historical background of both.. It's "not" about slow or fast rap but just rappers dissing each other that's why RM closed "Joke" by saying "HIT ME" (as if you dare to hit me again). But RM just silenced them from then until now and I think forever😉💜.. That's why I love him so much.. hehehe..

*9 flows, no chorus, straight bars!*
*Joke is a Masterpiece! BTW he has an IQ of 148 and you'll see why his lyrics always have double meanings. HE'S THAT IMPRESSIVE 🔥🔥🔥*
To explain why RM made this song :
So you probably know that RM and Suga received a lot of flak from the underground K-hip hop community when they signed with an Idol company. In addition to that people would try and shade his rap skills, saying he had no skills and no flow. So he made this song as 'joke' to show off his flow and speed and also shade back on the criticism by pointing out that you can rap as fast as you want but if you're just saying nonsense then what's the point? Hence there's no hook, just bars after bars and some nonsense words like 'bibbidy bobbidy.. *Joke is an intelligent sattire for people who think rapping fast without any meaningful lyrics and flow is cool or good.* The bibbiby babbiby verse you heard him say is the joke of him dissing the mumble jumble rappers. Joke is not just "fast rap" with no meaning. RM is the KING of wordplays. He focuses a lot on lyricism, double/triple entendre and flow. He gets his inspiration from 90's hip hop if you wanna check out his first mixtape.
but simply the other rappers are making fun of him because he can't rap fast and only focus on lyricism which is why he made this song for them. he said "hit me" at the end to allow others to diss him again. but nobody did anything yet. King's shit. fun fact: RM was at one point one of the top students in all South Korea, boy is a GENIUS...
*In short, RM GENIUS SONGWRITER OF THE CENTURY.*
His rap is not only skillful but extremely intelligent. Makes me wish I knew Korean to fully understand all the wordplay and references.
