when jack in te box got released everyone was surprised, bc jhope literally makes justice for his name lol he's so bright and charismatic, so when he showed this "dark" side of him, with no dance, just proved how he's versitile and a truly good artist...

@@pamella1285 lol he was nervous about armys reaction because they are stuck on him being one dimensional sunshine and don't see any other sides of him. (I remember, when HW came out, he said he didn't want to make it too dark, because he was afraid fans won't like it. So...)So yeah, if you actually paid attention to him over the years you wouldn't be surprised.

@@SweetLittleLie87 This is really coming off as very passive-aggressive. Of course fans have paid attention to him. Even if you've paid attention to him you can still be surprised by how visually and audibly dark it was. Along with the punk-rock vibe. The lyrics are no surprise, because fans have indeed listened to what his past songs that have touched on the darker, more personal thoughts. Or what he's expressed outside of his songs. No one is lesser of a fan for being surprised by the total musical switch up, which is kind of what your comments imply.

There is few interesting interviews; with IU (Palette, they even sing together) and with Zico (5 min +bonus). Greetings from the edge of Europe

The whole "Jack in the box" album is mind blowing specially EQUAL SIGN AND SAFETY ZONE and i think " Blue side" should also be in this list because that song is heavenly. I am all for Ot7 really i love each and every member so much but i can't deny the fact that i have the biggest soft spot for the "Rap line". There are videos on the making of the "More" and "Arson" MVs. His entire new full album, "Jack In the Box" tells his own personal story. If you react to his album, then you must follow it up with his hugely record breaking performance at "Lollapalooza", the world famous music festival in Chicago on August 30th. He was the headliner and closed the four day festival. personally, I have still not recovered from it and may not ever recover!!! I have now watched it at least 25 times. He asked that people listen to the songs on his new album in order because of the story it tells. "Daydream" is from his debut mixtape "Hope World" from 2018. Thanks for another great reaction!!!

There are many analysis of the song “More”. I didn’t understand it at first but I watched one video which explains the song. According to one analysis, the box reminds the mind of JHope. His perception of himself with regards to fame and his career. He wants to have everything ,singing his songs in stadium which refers to his fandom which is the Army. Just like any artist, he also wants the Grammys. He is saying that he had experienced already fame and money. Although, he have these things, he wants more. He wants more because this things already becomes his life and becomes his identity. Arson is the continuation of More, he is asking now himself should he stop now referring to put out the fire or should he continue and still burn brighter. I guess these situations always come to his mind and this is also the problems of many artists.

j-hope has my favorite solo work. I literally listen to Hope World and Jack In The Box every day. I have a tattoo from EGO on my arm because it really helped dig me out of a deep dark hole after law school. His lyricism can be challenging to grapple with because it's really abstract. Korean language is a lot more flexible and j-hope goes a little minimal so without context, or with context that references something really niche and obscure (which is very common for him) makes the job of translators very difficult. They often say they have the hardest time with his stuff and translations will vary the most from translator to translator for his work. But there's so much wisdom and pragmatism in his bars. And lots of clever wordplay too. He refers to his own verses a lot too so you've got to be really familiar with his discography to get some of his bars too. He uses onomatopoeia for wordplay too. Sounds that are descriptive but also literal words. And his bag of tricks is bottomless. He can do so much with his voice, there are songs you would think have 4 different rappers on them and a featured vocalist but it's all just HIM. And the range of sounds?? He's an exciting artist because he has such a distinct and identifiable brand but he always manages to surprise and challenge fans. Imagine someone trying to cover a j-hope track? Crazy. I really feel like in 10 years we'll see up and coming rappers and say "that's a j-hope flow" or "they give me a j-hope vibe" because he's really carving out a space of his own and doing something new. I'm obsessed with him, if you can't tell. haha

many were surprised by the darkness of his recent songs but if people read the lyrics closely to his fun upbeat tracks theyd see that same darkness in the lyrics. like daydreams lyrics for example are sad but the song sounds happy. doesnt make it a happy bright song. so imo people can be surprised he went this direction like the rock vibe but i find it odd how "no one saw this coming" takes ive been seeing since june cause i saw it coming since 2018 and the many times jhope said his bright side is only one side of him and he wants to eventually show a darker side.
people need to understand bts have never been one dimensional as a group or as individuals sure they have personas but thats not the entirety of them and theyve all said this multiple times. thats why they did map of the soul starting with persona. they have always been honest that personas are them but thats not all they are. theres traces of reality in their personas but thats not their entire identity. now in chapter 2 of their careers theyre showing us other personas and things they been wanting to show us for years. they werent stopped from showing us this and its not the "real" them its just another side of them that they finally have the time to focus on and show us.

@rjkpop, J- Hope is the Jack in the box so technically his world is inside the box if you see the different chambers they all represent inside the box the music video itself the office his living room where he opens the box the garage area where he’s with the monster band the hospital room and hallway is all represented in the box the name of his album is Jack in the box J-hope in the box!! I think this is a very great concept that he chooses and he’s talking about wanting more more than just BTS he wants to be singular and as an individual he wants to be noticed as an artist that can stand on his own 2 feet and express himself artistically! in his mind he loves who he is in BTS but he also wants to be recognized as a individual! That is why each one of the members are going to be doing their own solo albums we can actually have a closer Birdseye view of BTS is individual artistry! Oh and how they got the x-ray look there is a behind the scenes that shows exactly he’s not being subject to radiation of any kind I believe that is a computer generated which takes pictures of your skeletal which I believe is not the same as an x-ray but I could be wrong you would have to check out behind the scenes! 💜👍 keep up your journey it’s really fascinating to watch you go through it I’m reliving your K-pop journey which is really entertaining!

There's a reason why they call him the Golden Hyung 😎 Really enjoyed your reaction!! j-hope has, up until recently, been a bit underappreciated as far as his wide spectrum of talents. He's typically described in terms of his dance and the sunny side of his personality. Lately it's been really refreshing and exciting to see more appreciation for his spectrum of gifts, since a lot of people were apparently very surprised by his solo album.

Loved your thoughts on this! It's impressive how much you could take away just from your first impression. Here are some of my interpretations if you’re interested:
In More and Arson he uses fire as a metaphor for his greed and “thoughtless ambition”, as it fuels him but also causes burnout (both in himself and the world around him). In Arson, he calls himself, his members, label and fans “rational accomplices” in the crime of arson, we all worked together to propel BTS upward, but now that his part of their success is done, he’s basically given all he has, he asks himself what to do: put out the fire or burn even brighter? As a contrast to that, in More he very clearly says that there are many things he still wants.
I love the starting lines of More by the way! a korean translator said he uses a liquid metaphor the entire time: “Yeah I’m thirsty, surfing on the beat, I’m a fish in the water (I’m in my element), soak up the music.” And I thought: we as an audience assume he’s talking about water (good, healthy, important for life) when actually he may have been talking about petrol? Like in Arson and with the burned faces in More? Lots of fun theories and things to interpret :)
Ego is super interesting, it makes more sense in the context of the whole album, but also stands alone pretty well. It’s j-hope’s celebration of his identity and all the things he’s come to accept as part of himself. Though the path was hard and sad, and sometimes doubts come up questioning his choices, all choices were made by his fate and were for the right reason. “Just trust myself.” It never fails to make me smile whenever I’m low energy.
Actually all four songs talk about the same broad topic of his career and idol life/fame, I just realised! Only in very different ways. You can also see his growth from 2018 through 2020 to 2022 and his thoughts changing over time.

Started watching your group discovering and you're very refreshing.
Thanks for this reaction. J-hope is literrally my favorite artist. Just with theses 4 songs, you can see his versality.
He has two mixtapes at his name. One from 2018 and one he just released in 2022. Both are so different but very him and with the same sincerity and complexe lyrics/messages.
He has also his solo songs who are part of BTS albums.
He's for me one of the best of best performer. He produced and wrote songs for BTS albums since the begining of their carreer and his flow is such unique and has such a vibe..., so many color to it.
He's really a ace. Main dancer and he lead the group dances. Rapper and also can sing. In BTS song, his verses never miss ! Dancer, Songwriter, producer, rapper, insane performer on stage, singer.
And his music universe is always so unique and so well done.
You can check the others tracks of his first mixtape "Hope World"
And the rest of his second album (but first official album release) : "Jack in The Box".
I recommend to listen to the songs in the album order bc it's created with such cohesion and care.
As for his solo songs in BTS album, you just checked Ego from Map of The soul 7, but you can also check Just Dance from Love Yourself : answer and MAMA from wings.
I also would recommend to watch his first solo concert at Lollapalooza where he performed a well stage of his whole discography. It's an insane concert. He's such a performer !

Arson and More were both directed by Lee Suho of Balming Tiger, so with that and also J-hopes own input these music videos are connected, but not directly. Both songs are from his Jack in the Box album which if listened to from beginning to end will give you more of how they are connected. More is about how Jhope has the desire to give us a different side of him, and a declaration to provide for his fans. Arson is about the passion within him to continue going, even though there are others who say he and BTS have reached the top and there is no where to go, he is saying only he can decide when he's reached his creative end.

Arson and More really highlight the difference in the mind set of BTS vs other celebrities- a lot of celebrities once they reach the top they stop pushing, only release enough content to stay relevant and fuel their extravagant lifestyles, stop putting in so much effort etc. because why wouldn’t they? They’re at the top, they’re going to be famous and rich forever. But BTS doesn’t have the same mindset, they constantly release music because they love it, they are constantly seeking self-improvement and ways to express themselves and connect with more people, they still push themselves to do harder choreo, bigger performances no matter how much time and effort the dance practice takes. None of them act like their journeys are done just because they’re arguably set for life. They could have taken the easy way out so many times, they could STILL take the easy way out now, but they refuse. They chase passion, authenticity and self-development with every new project just the way they’ve always done. Hobi really put that burning ambition into words perfectly, he’s not done just because he’s got fame, money and popularity, he wants more.

just my thoughts: key with “more” is for it was pre-release track so it kinda opening the box where jack is. also thats why screaming parts are muted - its jack, he was still in the box when mv was dropped. and thats why in the end jhope closes the box without tape so jack will go out soon with whole album. and also lyrics starts when jhope tears tape - box starts to open and thats why all locations was in the box (they are mixed up by their places though). also i like how first and last parts are the same but sound so different as if it got more hungry and dirty - bc jhope wants more & more. x-ray is not real, it would be too dangerous amount of radiation!

The visuals in "More" were apparently inspired by the movie "Fight Club" - I haven't seen it myself, but people have posted similar-looking shots side by side (of the office and the corridor, especially). And the name of the main character in Fight Club is Jack Moore! Jack (in the box who wants) More, basically. There was also a scene in the movie involving acid, as a kind of 'character-building' rite of passage... maybe that's why the guitarists' faces were made to look like the skin was melting off (freaky, I know).
    Other details:
-Taehyung was in the office 'freeze frame' (which was filmed with all the actors standing still - the objects caught in the air were added afterwards, but the actors had to stay perfectly still as the camera panned around them).
-If you look closely, the reflection of the lights on the office walls formed the BTS logo.
-In the end, all the sets were contained in that box - in effect, saying that J-Hope was literally a Jack in the Box.

He’s such a beautiful person inside and out.. definitely a huge role model of mine !

The live performance was on his or his Mom's birthday...I can't remember. It was a very emotional performance. She was in the audience. There's an interview about how much that performance meant to him. Even if you don't react to this...watch it yourself. Also, his live performance of "Just Dance" is a must see.

So, Ego. It's basically part of a trilogy:
    Intro: Persona (RM)
    Interlude: Shadow (SUGA)
    Outro: Ego (j-hope)
Persona, Shadow and Ego are archetypes based on theories by swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung.
If you want to go really deep with interpretations, one could argue, that the archetypes here are chosen befitting their performer.

Last comment, I promise but since you asked for our thoughts on Ego--I do have some: Ego is a bright, exuberant song full of energy & joy and I have been meditating on its themes since it dropped. I even painted a mural of it for my office wall and got a tattoo of the graffiti wall art from the MV on my arm. After law school it really dug me out of a dark hole. At its core, Ego reminds us that where we are now is a result of where we’ve been and no matter how much we revisit or even regret our choices or lament for what might-have-been, we can’t actually change any of that. The only choice we have now is to take ownership of where we are, of who we are and push on. Where we’ve been has ultimately made us who we are and who we are is perfectly capable of making new choices, better choices even, in our own best interest. In fact we are the only ones perfectly situated, with all the knowledge of our history, our self, our desires, our needs to make those choices. The MV has a lot of imagery to that effect--the maze j-hope runs confidently into, the old photos and music video scenes, the stores changing to reflect his impressions. In one scene, Hoseok surrounds himself with religious iconography and poses like the Virgin Mary and then paintings are shown that depict him as various gods from different pantheons (Zeus, Ra, Mithra). This self-deification (also called "Egotheism") where he casts himself as the god/master of his own life, was a particularly effective piece of imagery. Of course, in typical Hoseok fashion, he wraps this profound message up in a dance-y, soulful beat that feels powerful and celebratory and almost reminiscent of Carnival and he makes sure to linger on the love and joy that he's leaned on. This is a happy, almost cathartic revelation for him--he's in control of his own destiny. And it was for me too. Despite my unchangeables--which I can accept or let go, if not embrace--I can make new choices now as a more SELF-aware person. Anyway, this was long. But Ego means so much to me and I really appreciate you taking the time with all of his songs to really think about them a little harder. Because of the tone of some of his brighter stuff and his tendency to write abstractly, people undervalue his lyricism. I promise I spend more time with his lyrics than anyone's because there are so many layers to them. I appreciate you getting the depth right away.

You're watching two different eras of JHope.....Jack in the Box, from earlier this year is the first of the members' solo albums backed by their label (they will all have one soon). It is a darker side of JHope, and a more rounded picture of him when taken with earlier works. The other thing you're looking at is the JHope from his solo work mixtape, which is NOT backed/promoted by the label, from a few years ago. You should watch his Lollapalooza performance from this year --- it's truly amazing, and he got to perform these songs in front of a live audience for the first time...He never got to perform a lot of this stuff live because of the pandemic hitting when Map of the Soul 7 was released and their tour being cancelled and the other stuff because it's from his newest solo album. The old stuff from his mixtape wouldn't have been performed live because it wasn't officially BTS and label-backed. JHope is actually quite complicated as a person, even though he got peg-holed as "The Happy One" early on.

I feel like you watched these a bit backwards. "Daydream" is part of J-Hope's 2018 mixtape Hope World (released on Soundcloud, but no "official" release, which is also how both of RM's and Agust D (Suga's) mixtapes were released). Hope World is basically a celebration of all the things that make J-Hope who he is as a person and an artist-- his hopes, his dreams, his love of music, and yes, his blue side. It's generally optimistic and upbeat because *Hobi* is an optimistic and upbeat person.
"Outro: Ego" is off of BTS's Map of the Soul: 7 album, and is the third of the "trilogy" of rap songs on that album that delve into Carl Jung's theory concerning aspects of the Self-- RM did "Persona" (the mask we present to the public) Suga did "Shadow" (our dark side, the unconscious parts of ourselves we deny, subsume, or are ashamed of) and J-Hope did "Ego"(our consciousness, our personal identity). So when you said it feels like his life story... yup. :)
"More" and "Arson" are the lead songs off J-Hope's new album (not mixtape, an official album this time!), "Jack in the Box." I've heard a lot of ARMYS call Jack Hobi's Shadow side, and I'd... tend to agree with that. I mean, we've always known he's a whole person who has struggles and sad times, but he generally hasn't wanted to display that side of himself to ARMY much in the past.
With this album, Hobi was stretching himself artistically, showing the world what he's capable of, and (as you said) showing us a different side of himself. At the beginning of the album, he explicitly links his name to the story of Pandora's Box, and there's a lot of imagery throughout of being released-- from the box, from a defined role, or from or a limit he imposed on himself-- and getting to experience the wider world. I think some of the strange/disturbing imagery from MORE is part of that, too-- it's very deliberately NOT a pretty K-pop idol look. It's punk, it's rock. (And yes, the skull was his. Watch the making-of video. ;) )

just as suga showed you the 3 sides of himself, j-hope is showing us the 3 sides of himself. the funny smiling guy he lets us see is not really who ''he'' is. you ? the distorted faces - no identity. ''more and ''arson'' are from the same album called 'jack in the box'. more is the first song on the album and arson is the last song on the album. just like suga's shadow, j-hope is living his life experience as a daydream. bts always has a deep message in their songs, they tell you a individual personal story or a group story. we just have to 'read the lyrics'. ego is the world of hope or world of j-hope.

Yes, the xray thing is real. There's a making of video and they have an "xray camera". Also, the "More" MV is a huge shout out to the movie Fight Club. There are references to the movie throughout the video. Including the makeup on the drummer and guitarist. Another thing is that I find your song choices for J-Hope a bit interesting. Of the four songs, only one of them is part of the BTS discography, and that's EGO. The other three are all songs from his mix tapes rather than official BTS content. One thing to keep in mind, both with the mix tapes or solo projects and BTS content is that the MV often tells a story that is different from the lyrics of the song. Both do tell a story, though. Arson and More are from his recently released mix tape, Jack in the Box, while Daydream is from his 2018 mix tape, Hope World. I'm not sure about Hope World, since it was released before I found BTS, but Jack in the Box. tells the story of J-Hope, his name and his career. Arson is actually the last track on the album, which is why the song talks about how he's done everything and there's nothing left. It also questions what he should do next in his career. More is the third song on the album and talks about his thirst for success in his chosen career. The fight club references are to emphasize the lyrics of the song. There are a number of parallels between the song lyrics and the plot of the movie. J-Hope is a member of BTS and one of their song writers. Just like BTS songs can be very deep and meaningful, J-Hope's mix tape/solo album songs are just as deep.

The box thing is tricky. I recommend checking out the channel "Bookish Theories" for the MORE explanation. I mentioned in my other comment, he's really referential and the callbacks to his previous and current album concepts and other verses and MVs he's done are everywhere. The idea of his new album is that the entity "Jung Hoseok" was in Pandora's box and when Pandora opened it and called forth "(j-)hope" to ease the anguish of humanity, he left behind all of the parts of him that were unfit for that grand mission amalgamated and personified into the alter ego "Jack." And, as a "Jack in the Box" does, it sat alone in the darkness as it was wound up over time only to spring forth, bringing all of the accumulated woes with him. j-hope returns to meet Jack and explore him and, through the album, they have a literal conversation about what hope is to humanity, what it is to himself, and what his role is as an agent of hope. So the Box is MORE has a lot of layers to it. I think the most important thing to note is that, in MORE, Jack controls the box. He opens and closes it as he sees fit. He recognizes that he's in the box, going about his daily life, the office, home, etc, but he's got greater self awareness now of who he is and what he's capable of.
Also, idk if you're a Fight Club fan but there were a lot of callbacks to the film/book. Ready to have your mind blown? The protagonist of Fight Club is named Jack Moore. JACK (as in Jack in the Box) and MOORE (as in the song MORE). Seriously...he has the biggest brain.

for the spotify thing the only mixtape that isn't on spotify is RM's first one which Joke is apart of and some solos from the vocal line are not are streaming platforms instead they are on SoundCloud and that's because bts themselves said that these songs were gifts for the fans and didn't want them on streaming platforms. The concept trailers is a tradition for bts in all of their albums it's basically a video that cuts down the intro songs of every album and makes a cool music video to show off the concept of each album. for map of the soul we got Intro: Persona (RM), Interlude: Shadow (SUGA), and Outro: Ego (j-hope) these songs also count as the rap line members solos songs as well since the vocal line in the album got their own solos My Time (JK), Filter (Jimin), Inner Child (V), and Moon (Jin).
Now the story about these songs in this video, j-hope first released Hope World (Daydream is a song in this album) where he talked about his name and his identity as wanting to be a piece of peace for ARMY. In Outro: Ego, which came out after Hope World, he discusses what his identity truly is and saying that he should trust himself while finding out what his true identity is. And finally Jack In The Box (MORE and Arson in this album) he discusses how after releasing Hope World he felt stuck in a box of always releasing colorful, happy music and having this type of persina as well. He wanted to step out the box and show case more of himself to ARMY l=showing us his musical range and talents.
Now Persona, Shadow, Ego have their own explanations as well, but I'll have to wait until you react to SUGA to tell you what it is. Hoped I helped and made sense lol

    @jhopeur7219 Рік тому +2

Sorry for all the comments--Some of the water references in Daydream have to do with the album concept. Hope World is a trip to Hope World (Hope's World). He introduces himself as Captain Nemo of the Arronax (a reference to Jules Vernes 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) and takes us on the submarine to Hope World. He even uses the sound of submerging in water at the beginning of the first track "Hope World." He then is our captain and guide as he gives us a tour of his world, introducing us to his mission, his vision, his concerns and habits (as he does here in Daydream), his ambitions, and then returns us to our world in the last track "Blue Side" (which atmospherically tells us we're going "Back to the Blue Side"). In j-hope's brilliant fashion, these songs mean other things independently but as a whole, it's a consistent thematic journey where we get to know j-hope. Then on his next album, we get to know Jack. Genius.
