When we talk about Porsche 911 "GT" cars, the term we like to use, and sometimes overuse, is "motorsport theater," which implies pretending. Pretending like what, you ask? Pretending like this. The Cup Car. The world's most popular premium spec-racer is back for the 992 Generation, and 311RS Motorsport was kind enough to get me a quick test at one of America's coolest tracks: Brainerd International Raceway. The 992 Cup is a factory-built and supported race car that can race both in its own spec-series and other endurance racing and club level series around the world. It features the stock GT3 4.0L engine, making 510 HP, but with a racing sequential gearbox, drastically reduced curb weight, and the trappings of motorsport, including a full cage, fire suppression, and remote-monitored telemetry. The 992 Cup costs $350,000 and includes a spares package. It reportedly costs in the high-six figures to campaign one for a whole season.
311RS Motorsport provided the vehicle, the track, and travel expenses for this test!

Pleasure having you in the car Matt! Awesome to see your take on it! It’s a wonderful machine!
shame you couldn't get the same trim in the interior as on your safari 911('s) lol love it though, good stuff!
This is so much more appealing to me than some $3 million hypercar. I’ll take one of these every 2 years for the next 10 years and go racin’!
How much to you think that P-Car would cost? I’m guessing $750K?
Hell yeah, plus, it is not going be a garage queen
@@clu4u
225000€ before taxes.
I’m thinking of getting this instead of the Huracan STO, but you have to think about: servicing costs and frequency, unusable on the road, less than 15 track days a year where I live, no A/C which is impossible for me since temps go as high as 55C, very hard to sell later, and many other reasons. I’m trying so hard to justify it but it’s difficult.
@@Kmaaq Not so hard to sell - especially if its an HPDE only car. The used market for these is almost 100% ex-race cars, many re-tubbed, and all with race body damage, and race hours, with pending engine and trans rebuild costs at 30, 60 and 100 hours. We tried turning street cars into race cars and you constantly end up chasing things that it wasn't designed for. These Cup cars are endurance racers - keep on top of pads, tires and engine oil, and they just gooooo.
I love how Matt could be confessing to murder at the beginning of the lap and we’d never know.
Oh noes, you skipped that?
Matt: "I'm gonna do my best to shout down the glorious noise of this racecanoodle! But it's verde loud, so hassenpfeffer gooble morphus...!"
992 Cup Car: "What's that Matt? Anyway, thanks for joining us. Enjoy this Just-the-Noise One Take!"
That sound is just not of this world! Holy..... that thing gives me goosebumps. What an experience, glad you showed it to us!
At one point of the video i thought that Matt got lost and ended up on a drag strip😂😂😂😂
So glad you got to experience the home track and hospitality! Cheers
Yeah Race cars are on another level. Matt I remember when I invited you out to dream racing to make videos on their Huracan Supertrofeo and other super cars.
People just can’t comprehend how composed race cars can be at speed
Thanks for that invite! That was a good day!
The sound of the gearbox and the engine is blowing you away. Really nice to listen to. - Great Video!
Sounds way better than the current f1 cars
honestly surprising how Porsche succeed in making each new generation sound better than the already very-good sounding previous gen.
Love it. Went to Silverstone for the GP a couple of years back and saw Hamilton win and go crowd surfing. Highlight of the day? The Porsche Supercup race.
Having the telemetry was super helpful to truly ride onboard with you Matt. It looks like you never had to brake more than 50% in that thing!! Unbelievable!
Cause hes going slow
My favorite video you have ever done. You took turn-1 pretty fast there and only one more testicle away from WOT like the Pro. Shout out to 311RS for their contribution!
I turned on captions, and several times the auto generation just said [MUSIC] and I have to agree.
Loved seeing you driving in the great state of Minnesota. Looks like you were on the longer old layout of the track. Have been enjoying the racing at Brainerd for years. FYI the area around the track are also amazing with many lakes for boating and excellent golf courses
Aaaahhh - golf with the sounds and smells of racing in the background. Where is this exactly? Heaven?
@@deldridg Brainerd mn
No we can’t here you over 7k 😄 nice race car all the same.
Lee’s turn 1 line to the edge of the track 👌🏻
Hear*
Fucking stellar video. What a ride and a pair of lungs.
Too bad there is no indication of what your speeds were. The RPM's are interesting, but tell us nothing about the speed of the vehicle, as you negotaited this track. You may have to invest is a special microphone, to deal with improving what your saying in such high noise vehicles.
I need a cigarette after watching this and i dont even smoke.
That's a serious piece of kit, sounds incredible.
The carrera cup races have been great this year. 311rs is due a first place any race now. Im going to catch them live at VIR and road atlanta. If yall enjoyed this, go watch the races on the IMSA youtube channel. What great experience to test a cup car, nice job Matt!
Thank you for the support 🍻
And come by the rig at either one of those races, there’s a tshirt with your name on it.
@@311RSMotorsport Will come by. I will be easy to spot. Im the only 992 driver who makes leh keen look small. Lol. Go get em in Wisconsin this weekend!
this is my dream!!!! cant wait to see it in assetto corsa competizione since thats the closest im gonna get :D
I wonder who had a faster lap time? Matt or AdamLZ?
we talked about it afterwards - we think he was probably a little faster. he did a couple hours of sim time, and consequntly had "probably way too much confidence" going into turns 1 and 2. I didn't do any sim time, and so I was driving seat of the pants, which, given the same two sessions, he was probably quicker. if we each got a full day with data dumps, it would be a fun race!
Welcome to Minnesota :)
I remember when 311rs started with the Evo X. Pretty cool to see this today.
Please someone give BIR the money to update this wonderful track back to the days of Donnybrooke. The track design is wonderful.
omg the sound.... so incredible!
matt, did you ever consider putting subs for when the voice recording wasnt practical?
The straight cut gears genuinely gave me goosebumps, that’s the cherry on top of a master baked cake
Great video. Some of the telemetry was pretty funny. The "track " displayed on the VBOX was apparently not the full course you were driving so it looked like you got real lost around the drag strip. Also the lack of speed info on the telemetry was surprising to me. Despite that, the telemetry was still a great addition. Nice driving and sweet car.
Dude, you are really high in status if they allow you to drive their race car. Congratulations 👏
Imagine seeing Matt's GT3 video, buying a GT3 in the quest for ultimate driving experience, just to witness this
What an awesome day you had my dude
That was 'F up and your dead' fast by Keen
This sounds amazing holy shit
Zak I see you need a paint correction. My e36 was worse, yours will really brighten up. Worth every penny.
Wonderful video. Would love to see you drive other GT3 cars like the two you mentioned.
Wish I could have been there that day. Gotta love our local BIR.
The sounds that car makes are absolutely insane! Car porn.
this was a fun video to watch even if if your monologue wasnt in focus
Subtitles maybe? 🤔
Just a thought…
so can theoretically anyone just buy one if you have the money? like are they bought from a dealer or directly from porsche?
leaving a dot, also interested how does one get one
I would assume if you have the cash you buy one and probably straight from Porsche if not as a special order from a dealer I can’t imagine this would be in a showroom
As far as I Know, current year models can't be bought by private customers not running in one of the official porsche cup sanctioned championships.
They are usually reserved for teams and drivers with the correct racing experience, licenses etc. They only produce a limited amount, so once the "professionals" get their allocations, there aren't any left over for the regular folks. If I remember correctly, Btim from BBI said in a recent podcast that even he wasn't able to get one.
Yes anyone can order one. You actually order them, I believe, through the "parts" department of Porsche Motorsport. It's weird. But yes you can definitely buy one as an individual.
Does it have bluetooth
That engine is mechanical art!!!!
Oh man. Those gear shifts 🤤🤤🤤
Took your advice and put vredestein's on my gs300. Best tires i have ever bought!
Nice! Thanks for the ride along. I LOVE the sound of straight cut gears.
There's only one place where you can get that. Sweet ride!
Wish we could see speed on the overlay!
Thumbnail says 311 RS 😂😂
No Brakes into T1 next time. I race 600cc motorcycles there and we can go in WFO at 165mph.
borrowed race car, freshly "drying" track, first go, and i'm responsible for anything bad that happens. upside potential? About $600 and someone on the internet thinking I have balls. No thanks. I did the math.
@@TheSmokingTire understandable. Surprised you drove on the drag strip when drying that VHT is like ice in the wet.
@@TheNkp08 I've driven brainerd once before so I know it's gnarly, and the only track note Leh gave me (which you can see me follow) is *STAY DOWN THE CENTER AT THE STARTING LINE FOR DRAG STRIP AND DO NOT DRIVE ON THE VHT*
My 2006 toyota corolla with 3000,000 hit 100 on that curve. Love BIR. Fast drag strip and a fun road course. I see you got to drive the big course. The short course would have been fun to drive with all the tight curves and fast transitions. The 90 turn to go under bridge and back out the long curve is so much fun.
Nice drive! Maybe someday you'll get a shot in an RSR?
hah i've had a lot of success with this strategy: If you treat their race car with respect, when they get the next race car, you get to try that one too.
@@TheSmokingTire Two down, hopefully more to go :)
@@TheSmokingTire Sounds like a solid strategy to me. Also on that last point you made in the video, why spend over a million on a supposedly track-focused McLaren Senna when you could have this for a fraction of the price and on track it would be superior in every way?
@@Gearbhall ... and you can actually enter it in a race once you're comfortable.
Having spent a little time driving one of these, it's amazing how smooth and effortlessly fast it is. No where near as intimidating/intense as you would expect.
How did you drive one??? I want to drive one soon. I want to experience the raw feeling of these.
@@LawnMower-jv8hg I race cars as a profession.
What a amazing Porsche, would be great to own one for track days
BIR is my home track!
LET'S SEE HOW SHE DO!!!!!!
I want a go on that track. That setup is wild!
omg, 40 minutes in this, what a job you have.
All that telemetry, but no speedo to show? Sad day :(
Seeing you speed is the last thing that a racecar driver cares about, reves gears and others are more important
Wow, now I know why you drive so fast in the canyons. It sounds like straight cut gears.
OK Matt, now that you've done the GT3 thing with 500 hp come on down to VIR and I"ll let you drive my Trans AM TA car. No anti-lock, no traction control, no yaw control, and 860 hp. You'll run 180+ into the breaking zone on the front straight. Now we're hav'in us some fun!!!
Love to see the trusty notebook in the race seat there
Cool to see so many fellow Minnesotans on here! BIR is also my home track. I was there last Saturday for Proving Grounds in a '19 C7 Z06 that I'm still nervous going much over 100 mph in to turn 1. The older Donnybrooke course Matt drove goes through the drag strip. The newer, about 10yo "Competition Course" is 2.5 mi, 13-14 turns. More technical and doesn't use the drag strip portion.
The short course is so much fun to watch the bikes on. Sitting in the corner stand at turn 13 and watching liter bikes pick the front wheel up while they are still turning is a trip!
Sorry, what did you say?
Forgive my ignorance but can anyone tell me what type of race/series these cars would be used in and where I can learn more?
The Porsche Carrera Cup Series. There's several national and regional series throughout the world and an international championship that's a support race at Formula 1 events. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_Carrera_Cup
@@meekrab9027 thank you! 🙏🏻
As the revs build, the pitch of the gearbox and wind noise climb higher and higher, drop as you lift, climb again… My breathing involuntarily syncs to the sounds. And I’m just watching a UA-cam video. Half a lap at five tenths would have me hyperventilating and on the verge of adrenal overload. What a thing!
Great driving Matt!
Interesting you said you can get in the throttle early compared to a GT3 car. I’ve driven this in ACC sim and you can usually get in the throttle a lot earlier in GT3, and that’s because of TC in GT3. The 992 cup doesn’t have TC
Yo. For videos like this, closed captioning kinda becomes non-negotiable. Just FYI.
Congrats to your innovative style Matt, you are re-inventing the wheel many times.....so to speak. Great review :)
Tell Leh hes taking it easy, old track (ie no short course and no inside on turn 10. 2.8 RSR clone with a Langren engine and torsion bar suspension, 158+ in turn 1. By the way Leh, there is 6" more in turn 9.
Watching you has become like watching someone who is doing a sales pitch. There is now ZERO passion in your videos. Keep doing those ads, I'm outta here.
Very envious, I would love to drive this
Is this a video or an infomercial? I tuned out after one minute of hearing a sales pitch for an unknown brand of tires.
How about going back to the days of ‘Project Nasty’ when the quality of the content came first?
WHY IS HE TALKING?! I do not understand that at all! Drive the darn thing, then talk later.
"honey, I sold the house. Stop screaming at me,, we have a GT3 Cup Car."
Easy to drive unexciting no clutch pedal or manual gear shift, yawn
There is not much that sounds better than a Porsche Race car with straight cut gears. The whine that they have is pretty unique and amazing.
No street car, turned track day weapon will ever be able to compete with a full blown race car, especially not one made by Porsche.
20 minutes after getting out of the car, Matt lobs a call to his dad, "hey Pops, I need about $600K to buy a seat in a Porsche race car for the next couple years, who do we know that would be willing to sponsor me?"
Flat out through T1 was worth it! : D
1:03 you telling me Zack is over 30 years of age? *insert pic of meth head chick standing all methhead like
The tires give you the feeling... like you just had hand blisters?
Wild. Cheers for the review!
Heaven, this is heaven. If there is an afterlife please let it be this.
Man that gearbox whine....
take care of that and it might be fun....
Nice to see an automotive related advertisement instead of some genital grooming device or pretentious wrist watches. Thanks.
Funny how we are old and fat when we hit 40, We should be saying this when we are 70
Adam LZ in the background…lol
This was intense!
This is awesome, great video Matt 💯💯
For race - Porsche, there is no substitute: ua-cam.com/video/bOoNaWxl2bU/v-deo.html
IDK what "slight" changes Porsche will make but pretty sure this is what the 992 GT3RS will look like (from the OUTSIDE, of course! 😂) #gorgeous I'm just interested to see the performance it'll have
What a wicked opportunity to drive a Porsche CUP car.
Love them in Assetto Corsa Competizione, but that's about as close as I've been able to get to one.
Would LOVE to race, or even just drive these irl. Hope you took the time to enjoy every minute of it!! :)
if only they had 4k "in car cams" for the real races. why havent they done so? so tired for squinting @720p for IMSA races
Nice car. Still pretty even with all the aero. In a straight line, probably not much slower than my LS Miata (double wishbones since 1990). I'll bet the Porsche corners a lot better. :-)
Jesus, this thing is going! I dont see how Matt was even talking.. i would be too busy focusing on not dying lol. That was proper audio.. believe me.. hearing this thing was beautiful! 😍
I envy you. In the top 3 on my bucket list is to drive a fairly modern Porsche GT car on track, preferably Sebring but I'm not picky...
You gotta love a racetrack that uses an NHRA dragstrip as the front straightaway. 😄 Into THAT first right sweeper...
That motor noise does things to me.
any idea on maintenance costs to upkeep the car every season?
Most American circuits look like trash.
This track is nuts. The straight is a drag strip lmao
Wow! What a great presentation. Exhilarating.
