I just brought the Ariens Zenith this year 2021. I got stuck in my ditch the first time I used my mower I know not to do that again lol. If your deck is eating out you are mowing to low.
All the problems you mentioned is from someone who's inexperienced in a zero-turn and it tells me you're Troy-Bilt was not a zero turn. The leavers yes you have to pull back on them like the reins of a horse. You need to get used to driving a zero-turn. There is no way you will ever go back to a steering wheel mower once you get used to this zero turn. You mentioned nothing about the mower deck on it and how deep it is the quality from a mower is from the ground-up you always look at the mower deck first and how deep it is will show how much suction it will pull the grass up. Plus you have a lot more room in a deep mower to move the grass around and throw it out the side when it is tall. Get used to this mower don't take it out just one time and say it's a bad mower in certain areas you're not used to a zero-turn and I can tell that right off the bat. You can do it man if my wife loves hers then I know you will be a man in love yours LOL. Also trade in those sandals you're giving us a review of a commercial mower wearing beach sandals LOL. Why didn't you show cutting the 2-ft grass? That would have really have been a good performance indicator.
I have the Gravely version of this mower and it's waaay better than your old mower.

My Troy-Bilt is a zero turn this is just a little different but I'm getting used to it
