Hooking a live shrimp through the top/middle of the head (between eyes and organ) or in the tail near the fan would be the best option with a popping cork. Once the water clears up around here that would be a good test!
I'm surprised that no one has figured a way to rig these to show a shrimps natural escape movement so they jet backwards with the tail tucked under. Then when they rest the tail un curls and sits horizontally
The Power Prawn has them all beat! The Savage and Vudu are a close 2nd. If the Gulp was made out of floating plastic along with the scent, it would be up there. Chasebaits tail action is lacking. Another great informational video getting straight to the point, thanks!!
There is still a factor which is not considered in this video which is water current. Surely when there is strong current all lures which may be resting vertically will be affected.
In Australia we don't have popping corks but we do have poppers we could use instead. I'll try a chasebaits shrimp behind a regular hookless popper. Thanks for getting me thinking. Cheers .... Dwayne
Zerek's absolute shrimp is my favorite all-around saltwater lure now! Replace the original hook with 3 gram worm hook , re-align the feets with nano heat stick to make it all wide open, then you'll see the magic !
Great tips! Subscribed to your videos, heading to islamorada in early December and was checking out different rigs for pier fishing. Normally we would bottom fish with cut bait for shark, snapper or whatever would eat. Was thinking about moving up in the water column. So I’ll be studying your videos like this one. Thanks!🎣
Great video guys! One thing that’s worth mentioning is that between the Savage gear and Chasebaits the hook is embedded vice the Vudu which is exposed. This could lead to better hook up/land ratio with the exposed hook vices weedless!
You could rig a Power Prawn or other shrimp imitation on a Core Tackle Hover Rig hook and it would hand horizontally under a popping cork, or a lot better than a jig head at least.
The horizontal knot placement on the Gulp Shrimp/DOA Shrimp hook eye would need to reset every few casts to ensure the horizontal resting position in the Water column. (Assuming leader is mono).
I add super-glue to the knot to keep it at a right angle to the lure. I do this with any jig under a cork. You can also tie your knot just below the eye of the hook, on the shank, to keep it from hanging tail-down.
looks super neat here.. but in bay waters specially with wind speeds over 20 mph.. they hardly rest vertically.. they go all over the place and rest sideways half the time :(...
I got myself a set of shrimp lures from amazon and it said that you can catch trout with them but they seem a bit big so I was just wondering if that was true or if the shrimp lures are mostly for bass.

Hanging from a static popping-cork isn't the same as sinking on a tight line without the popper. The DOA will stay horizontal on a retrieve with a tight line when paused.
Hard to say which one will be best, but the ones with more action will typically do better in dirtier water. They all will catch fish and it really comes down to being able to find active feeding zones and picking the best spots based on conditions/time of year, etc.
Thanks Tony. I like fishing lures here on the Texas gulf coast but not much luck with shrimp lures under cork. The action of these shrimp is encouraging. Ha our Galveston water always seems to be dirty. I’ll keep fishing
That would be a good test as well. I feel like they would probably start to spin. All of the shrimp tested are under $10, with Chasebaits being the most ($9.99). We have links to each in the full post which you can find the link to in the description.
I also use the zman shrimp but rig them on a zman jig 1/4 or 3/8 head. Best part is that they are indestructible! Have caught 30+ fish on same lure. All the others tend to get destroyed after a few fish. No idea how they look underwater but I do get probably half the bites on stopping where they just hang. Used to love gulp, but I think for the durability that live shrimp are better. Gulp is waaay overpriced now. Good but not durable at all.
I mean this is specifically for saltwater right I'm going fishing a lake tomorrow using popping cork got fake shrimp plastics and chicken liver and Kool aid hotdogs I'll post about it tmrw ptauy me I'm teaching myself and kids 2 fish 🐟
Great review there. I never really knew how the vudu shrimp sits in the water. I use that lure with good success under a cork. Do you watch any other fishing UA-cam channels yourself?
Thanks Paul! I don't really watch many other channels. All of the ideas I get for videos come from ideas that pop into my head while I'm on the water or requests. I filmed a mini course for our private members on rigging and retrieving artificial shrimp and I was filming some underwater footage. After seeing one shrimp under water with a popping cork, it made me wonder how others acted under it as well which led to this video.
@@tonyacevedo3149 that is cool Tony i am glad you are putting out good content but if you get a chance go to marsh man masson channel i think you would like to see fishing in the Louisiana marshes. Oh i am not promoting his channel just thought you might like to watch it lol
I think the real test is how they perform while being fished with the cork, not how it floats. How it floats horizontally is not a true measure of how it will work and doesn't mean it's the best. By the way water density is way different.
Thinking more about it. When the bait is floating in the water another factor would be the amount of current at the time, which would be moving the bait. A swimming pool is dead water.
Spend time actually catching shrimp at night with a light and you will clearly see that none of these shrimp look very natural. Shrimp “walk” forward horizontally. Period. If you really want to match the hatch-a very slow steady retrieve without jerking would imitate a shrimp in action perfectly. I understand the popping cork theory but I’ve personally caught tons more fish with the slow roll method. Reds trout and snook
100% true. They'd all need to be tested with the same kind of keel weighted swimbait hook. The moment you use a swimbait leadhead, it's obviously going to be resting vertical. That would happen with any bait you put on. I will say though that if he had used a keel weighted swimbait hook on all of them, the tail action results would have probably been the exact same.
The majority of these shrimp come pre-rigged (chasebaits, savage gear, vudu, doa, ez shrimpz) The scented shrimpz and the gulp shrimp were both rigged on the same jighead
This is just my thoughts, they make the shrimp realistic, but 👈🏽. If you see a shrimp in nature it swims backwards, it flicks its tail to propel itself in reverse and none of theses lures do that , and to get a shrimp lure to get a natural motion it would need to be at a pivot point just above we’re the body meets the top tail section, so the tail could collapse and spring back also in nature the shrimp would settle to the bottom of the sea floor and would jump off the bottom, and yes I realize that this is a comparison of product and who better, but our job as fisherman is to deceive fish into thinking our lure is natural and real in order to trick them into biting and getting caught, 🤔
Check out the full blog post here: bit.ly/2lSG9Hx
Did you use a fisherman’s knot or zero slip knot???
@@PROTECTEDBYCOLT Here's the knot we use for lures: ua-cam.com/video/C0u5HQBiv_I/v-deo.html
Thank you subscribed
@@PROTECTEDBYCOLT Non-slip loop knot was used on all lures.
Maybe do a comparison as to how a live shrimp would rest under a cork to see which one looked more natural.
One of the very best coastal fishing UA-cam channels.
I have heard about the popper and lure/bait fishing.
I think I will try it now.
Weightless DOA with glass rattle. Rests horizontal. In current the Doa is unmatched :)
I use the DOA shrimp with no popping cork and it falls horizontal, we have been tearing the trout up on them here lately.
Yeah, may have to sacrifice 2 or 3 live shrimp in the pool just to see how they work Tony! Do it
Awesome video Tony. I love your underwater vids!!!
The Power Prawn has them all beat! The Savage and Vudu are a close 2nd. If the Gulp was made out of floating plastic along with the scent, it would be up there. Chasebaits tail action is lacking. Another great informational video getting straight to the point, thanks!!
Great video!!!! I used to do this with lures when I was a kid; without the camera lol.
That's awesome!
Vudu shrimp looked like a realistic shrimp! Combine scent/texture of the gulp and action of the vudu, would be a killer bait.
Definitely has a great action!
I've caught so many different species of saltwater fish with that voodoo shrimp. It's my go to artificial shrimp by far.
Good stuff!
Good video broski !!!! Thumbs up just subbed
There is still a factor which is not considered in this video which is water current. Surely when there is strong current all lures which may be resting vertically will be affected.
i didnt see the braid .. can you tell me name of your braid.
Probably using a fluorocarbon leader
Great vid bro
I'm kinda new to saltwater fishing. And have yet to catch anything keeper. Tyvm for the tips!
No problem!

Nice test.
Cool vid guys great content keep it coming
I’ve loaded up on DOA’s but...what colors would work best in what waters? I’m here in Texas, more there Corpus Christi region.
Red glitter
near clear is very good, the glow in the dark one , gold glitter
Very interesting, Tony, thanks for the great footage.
No problem!
very good comparison test👍👍
Hello, greetings. introduce my name abui from jakarta city, indonesia.
I have question. popping cork vudu shrimp can catch barramundi?
Thanks!
The Vudu was the winner in my uniformed, humble opinion!
Tony - any way you can do that comparison bottom jigging?
Great Video....Keep up the great work! Heck! I may even catch a fish someday!
Thanks!

Thanks! Very true! You have the option to leave the hook exposed or skin hook it on those baits though (chasebaits and savage gear)
Tony Acevedo absolutely 100% agree! Great video brother. I love watching em
nice one , thank you😘
You're welcome 😊
Great test I got a lot from that awesome work
curious what size voodoo shrimp produces the best
Hey I was wondering if you can also do one on the maker54 lures one please
Aquajoint7 YT Word-The Jerk Shrimp and Weedless ones in the Wine color work great-Most realism I’ve ever seen in a Plastic Shrimp
Marsh Man Masson has a video on it, testing in a pool
Bayuo burner thanks
I believe shirmp are naturaly supending vertical then swim back

Thanks for the comparison. Great job.
Which ones floats more?
Confused a little, do shrimps not swimm backwards?
They usually “doggy paddle” forward and shoot rearward with tail when spooked.
where to buy
Haven’t used a popping cork From what I’ve seen looks good. ?what size cork ?
Great question! Make sure to ask this over in the Community (www.saltstrong.com/) where the coaches spend their time.

😭😂🎣
Would live shrimp still be the better choice when available???
I think the internal weight on the EZ shrimp messes with the buoyancy of the Elaztech. Maybe if it was lighter or it it was a jighead.
Thanks for the comment!
The Vudu shrimp seems to be the best of all attributes?

I'd eat the vudu shrimp if I was a redfish..just sayin
Vudu is my go to for this. I do like that savage gear one though
Okay but which one is better at actually catching fish. Also agree with another comment what does a live shrimp look like under a cork.

Savage Gear are probably the best
The tail on that VUDU, tho!

DOA over Vudu Junk all day!

Don’t shrimp swim backwards?
I use voodoo shrimp and they work awesome. Caught a lot of Flounder with it
Did you use scent with it??

so we not going to talk bout how he's using a bobber like bro
Add marker 54’s shrimp to this ...
music really could not here shrimp noises
I wish they made vudu shrimp in a bigger size
I liked the action of the first one more than the others. About to watch again as I can't remember the name of it 😂 Old farts disease 😡
