East_Tex_Will Agreed! Thought he seriously overrated the Target Shrimp 🤷🏼♂️. Visit looked best and it wasn’t close. To each their own. Appreciate the footage and video for sure! Thank MMM 🍻
People who are in love with the vudu shrimp have not been fishing very long or have not seen many shrimp in the wild. The doa is by far the most realistic. Wild shrimp don’t flop around and look limp underwater like the vudu
The Marker 54 Backward (Popping Cork) Shrimp is a killer in South Texas. Specs love it and just as durable as the Z-Man or Egret Baits. Caught 17 Specs in a row...no damage. Tight Lines!!!
Vudu was the only one that didn’t sit unrealistically vertical. Vudu definitely looked the best. The one that is listed top on here has the looks of a real shrimp but not near as good underwater. Great video
I just picked up the vudu shrimp and some vudu shad. I also just had two Lightning strike kayaks delivered. My Son got one and I got one. I am going to work on the trout. I am having a hard time figuring how to haul the kayaks. My truck is a GMC and has a toolbox so I have to have a tailgate extender. Can’t find one I like except the Tbone and it is like 230 bucks. But you have to pay to play. Great video and shows the baits that will work the best. The Berkeley gulp shrimp will work on em also.
I love the pool testing. I have a pool and love testing all my baits. Here in tampabay lots of guys use a dark plastic worm under a cork. Yes, a bass worm( pumpkinseed or rootbeer color ) and let me tell you, they work great too!
Scott Swind Great tip on the bass worm under a popping cork. I watch a lot of fishing videos and what works in Florida most times works in NC. Problem is I can’t find any Pompano jigs and flies here. I guess I will have to order off the net to get em. I hate that cause I like to look at what I’m buying!
Thx for the answer . If you ever go up Mo. Try Devils lake in No.Dak.. The reason I asked is that a lot of times when we clean them their stomachs are full of tiny shrimp !
I like lures that have a faster fall rate because with a faster fall rate you can impart more action to the lure and the action of the lure also looks more natural. If you ever see a shrimp in distress, it doesn’t swim in a slow, lathargic manner. It doesn’t simply fall slowly to the bottom of the water like in a slow motion kind of way, but rather it would dart from place to place. This is also the way that little fish swim, especially when they are in distress. That’s why I always catch more fish with lures that fall about a foot per second rather than with lures that takes forever for it to reach bottom. The only time that I may prefer a slower falling lure is during the winter, any other times I like lures that fall faster so that I can make them dance in an erratic manner that I like.
Love your pool videos! Keep doing them they are very informative. Berkley makes a rattling shrimp that we use a whole lot in the DuLarge area. It really produces and I don't think it has very much action. So, maybe action isn't as important as I've always thought. Give it a test when you have time. Thanks again for a great video.
I like those a lot. The natural color is pretty much identical to a live shrimp in the water. They have scent as well and you can catch a lot of fish on each one before they get to worn out.
great video. what I didnt see was a Yozuri jerkbait style shrimp and from my experience which is quite limited out performs all of these shrimps and has actually made mates change over from real shrimp to this bait! Cant say you are going to target any certain species but man is it fun!
I really liked the fall rates of the TKO and the DOA. I wonder if you put a small split shot right above the bait, you could perhaps make the bait fall more horizontally while not sacrificing too many points on fall rate.
Thanks for your videos. I always learn something new. Next time you pool test imitation shrimp, can you please add the Matrix Shrimp. I've been killing the bass and reds on them and I'd love to see the action in the pool. Thanks
DOA actually make a new version of their shrimp, 2.0. It' smaller and is weighted differently. Also has rattle chambers . On paper it doesn't impress me. I am impressed with the H2O MoJo shrimp. It is basically the same as the VuDu shrimp, only half the cost. I bought several and have used them exclusively as my bait under a cork this spring/summer. I have caught countless reds and a few trout with that bait.
Between Egret and Academy, you can see how all ya have to do is order, package and sell, via China. (and it doesn't stop there with shrimp lures!) Alibaba.com Alexipress and you're a Lure company if ya want to be.
IMO, the DOA keeps its shape and stays in the strike zone the longest. This gives the fish a better chance to see it. I’m not convinced the segmented tails are as important, because unlike a paddle tail, the bait is fished very slowly.
In bayous that are tough to fish due to slime and grass underwater, I've had good success with the Savage Gear 3D shrimp. It has a weighted weedless hook, and has worked well where I couldn't go with my goto bait, the VUDU shrimp...
Which size does everyone use if your goal is to catch keeper trout? I can't decide what's better overall-smaller sizes are easier to bite, but bigger sizes are easier to spot in brown water.
Well, I think as a general rule, bigger shrimp are going to get fewer bites but the fish will be, on average, larger. If I'm out for a meat haul, I'll go with smaller shrimp, but if I'm fishing an area where bigger fish should be, I'll go with a 4-inch shrimp.
6:01 cut horizontal wedges on top and bottom at the start of the tail.. And it'll have the same tail action as vudu, that's what I do with my artificial shrimps...
Don't pass on the hard shrimp from Academy! We see them catching in places where there are bluefish and trout together. Thanks for putting this together and sharing it. I'm going to try some of those voodoo shrimp!
Todd 1 lure by H2O Xpress is called a hover Shad it's pretty good for this time of the year you ought to check it out it's a soft plastic suspending bait kind of like the Paul Brown soft Plastics
The Vudu def kicks ass over all the others. In SW Fla that's all I use and they out fish all others 2-1. Might be a little bit pricey but it's worth it bc they catch fish when others don't!!!😎
One other consideration is how the lure holds up. I always buy TKO because of price and haven't noticed catching more with the DOA. The big knock on the TKO is the hook constantly slides out of place after a few fish. I always get it back in place, but after the initial hook slide you are going to be doing it almost every catch. Great video, Todd!
I've had the same problem with both TKO and DOA shrimp. As a result, I seldom use either anymore. They both produce, but I think there are better options.
any tips on throwing a cork on a baitcaster? maybe adjusting the spool tension or brakes? i can throw everything under the sun except for a cork and jighead when im fishing for trout. Seems like everytime i get a backlash and it's driving me nuts!
Here's my best advice for throwing a cork with a baitcaster: Don't throw a cork with a baitcaster. Can it be done? Yes, and a painfully few number of anglers have mastered it. But I'm not one of them.
Marsh Man Masson amen to that. Spinners with braid is the way to go. Popping corks with suspended baits are aerodynamically a nightmare, they cast erratically different every cast, so setting tension and braking is nearly impossible. I reserve baitcasters with braid for casting heavier jigs and plugs, usually in deeper water where you have superior feel. Also for throwing plugs that pull hard on the retreive. And with a heavier lure in windy conditions you don’t get yards and yards of slack line that the wind pulls off a spinner. And a baitcaster will win for extreme distance casting, because the line is being ‘thrown’ off of the rotating spool as the lure flies, where the spinner has to have the lure pull every foot off the spool, which means more drag on the lure.
@@MarshManMasson im from texas and most of the anglers here use bait casters. most of us have mastered it. all of those lures work well without a cork. and most of the time specks want an agressive presentation. great video.
Good stuff Todd! The pool vids are great! Just an idea for a future video would be doing a color comparison underwater in the lake/marsh. I dive/spearfish offshore and in the lake and many times, what appears to be one color above the water, looks completely different when it’s a few feet down in green or dirty water.
That's definitely true. I'm always amazed how murky the water is, even when it appears so pretty from above the surface. That tells you how much fish rely on their lateral lines to zero in on bait.
Do a zerek live shrimp/cherabin/hot legs, they resembles your DOA & Vudu shrimps , but better . Night glowing eyes, internal chamber , live like actions , can't beat the liveness. Some lures aren't made for cork retrieval tho
I have the H20 hover shrimp and honestly I’m pretty surprised 😂. It’s kinda cool to finally see what it looks like now, I’ve used it various times, but now I know I guess it’s probably not the best shrimp lol
Thanks for the great info. I've fished vudu shrimp for a while but they never produce for me. What way do you normally fish them? I usually just fish them on the bottom. Also what colors do you think are good right now? I use the natural now but can't buy a bunch of them to see what works where I fish because at $7 a pack they're not cheap.
Awesome Video! Love these type of underwater videos as it shows what the action of these lures are. I always thought that the DOA shrimps rested horizontally, guess not. If you do this again I'd like you to use the Yo Zuri 3d chrystal shrimp, even though it's a hard bait I would think it would have good action under the cork because of its lip and its horizontal slow sinking presentation. Also, I have a bunch of DOA shrimps and wonder if rigging them differently wouldn't make them look better underwater. For example taking all the weights and hooks off and rigging it with a weighted swim bait or EWG hook, or even unweighted, or tail hooked so it looks like its fleeing. It seems like the fish in Florida will literally bit ANYTHING LOL. The more I see these shrimp lure videos the more I just want to use a good paddle tail with good action. I'm probably not gonna use anymore shrimp lures outside of Gulp shrimp. Great video again.
Another great pool video! My number 1 popping cork shrimp is the older style Tsunami shrimp (they have a new jointed tail version to compete with the Vudu). Not a lot of action, but they look ultra-realistic and catch tons of fish. More than any other shrimp imitation that I've fished by far. Id like to hear your thoughts on those as well...
I wonder if you have ever done a side by side comparison of using these baits without the cork? I just can't bring myself to use these popping corks with soft plastics. Just looks too cheesy. I thought it was a texas and Louisiana thing but people over here in Florida are using them now.
That's because they produce. They just do. There are definitely some people over here who fish shrimp imitations without corks, but they're in a stark minority. In general, I prefer fishing without a cork to fishing with one, but on slow days, there's no substitute for a soft-plastic under a cork.
Marsh Man Masson No, it’s about letting the lure settle and move the way it was designed. A popping cork is great for locating/attracting Trout, because it was designed to ‘pop’ like a trout feeding, and the clicking beads sounding like shrimp in distress. A lead jighead with a multitude of different tails balanced the shrimp to hang horizontally from a fixed point above it, the cork.

The Holt is unique in its action and catches everything.
We use the zman without a cork very effectively in Australia.
Thanks for the feedback from Down Under! Does anyone in Australia actually call it that?
