Many people have sung this song. She has to be one of the few that can really SING this song properly. Absolutely brilliant.
While I would agree with you, the writer/composer would not. Folk singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl wrote the song in 1957 for his lover Peggy Seeger, who first recorded it. (I, who love folk music, do not like Seeger's version, though many people do. Very different version than this/Flack's.) MacColl loathed all covers of his song.
Matt Cardle sang this on E-Factor some years ago and it’s the best version so far .
