- One of the many famous Penang street food dishes is wantan mee. Read more about Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee here: migrationology....
Penang is one of the most famous cities in Malaysia and even throughout the world for its diversity of delicious food available. After having an action packed trip to Langkawi, Ying and I arrived in Penang. On our first day, I had some work to do, so we didn’t go on a big street food adventure, but using the map on Foursquare, I found a restaurant called Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee that served Penang wantan mee, and so we decided to go check it out.
The Uncle and Aunty that ran the restaurant were extremely nice to us, and they had a choice of either pre fried wantan mee noodles or fresh egg noodles wantan mee. We decided to get one of each, plus a bowl of wantan dumplings in soup on the side. Malaysian wantan mee, which is sometimes referred to as kon lou or kon loh wantan mee, is a type of noodles hand-tossed in a black sauce made with dark soy sauce. After the noodles were boiled, the Uncle dished them into bowls and then tossed them within the sauce mixture, making sure to coat the noodles. The Aunty then topped each bowl of Penang wantan mee with slices of char siu bbq pork, a handful of blanched choi sum, fried wantan, and some green onions. I’ve eaten plenty of noodles, but I think this was my first time to try black sauce hand tossed noodles.
I started off trying the pre-fried noodles, which were similar to instant packaged ramen noodles. At first I thought the fried noodles would be stir fried instead of boiled, but they were rather boiled, but just fried and dried before. The noodles had a crinkly texture and they were easy to chew. The sauce was slightly sweet, and to me it had a nice nutty flavor to it. The fresh egg noodles were dressed in the same exact dressing, but the noodles had a much different texture, that was much more silky and maybe a little more chewy. I think overall I preferred the fresh egg noodles better.
Along with Penang kon lou wantan mee, they also had extra wantan dumplings at Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee. To my delight, the wantan were probably my favorite items for lunch. The wantan were filled with minced pork and minced shrimp, and nice bits of water chestnut. But what I really like about them was that the bowl of soup was nicely flavored with sesame oil and sesame seeds - the dumplings were delicious.
Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee
Address: Located on Lebuh Acheh in George Town, Penang, Malaysia
Open hours: About 7 am - 1 pm daily, so it’s a place for breakfast or an early lunch
Prices: Our bowls of wan tan mee cost 4 MYR each and the wantan dumplings were 1 MYR per piece, and we had a bowl with 5. Our total bill came to 13 MYR
How to get there: Lebuh Acheh in George Town is parallel to Lebuh Armenian. From Canon street, just turn onto Lebuh Acheh and the restaurant is on the left side of the road.

See you on the next video!
Penang has been my favorite city for food in Asia thus far. I was there just a couple of weeks ago. Awesome place.
jjuzo Great to hear that. Yah, the diversity of food available is awesome.
It's great to see that you first tried the dishes as they were made, so that you can experience the creations made by these passionate people, before adding the sauces.
When I was a kid I used to add chilly sauces to my food straight away and my mum taught me a lesson about appreciating the dishes in their original states before altering them with extra flavourings.
That wonton soup represents what makes Malaysia great! In Hong Kong and Guangzhou, the wontons would look and taste quite a bit different to the ones in Penang. Northern Chinese influences changes them so that they're bigger, the wrapping is thicker, and with a dash of sesame oil. Love the ethnic mix that is Malaysia ...
the way he tilts his head when he's tasting the food is priceless
Its actually a legend.
You're amazing! I love how you're always so culturally sensitive in every video. And getting even the pronunciation for food right!
Whenever I need a 'Cheer-up' I always find a Mark episode to watch. Never fails! Thank you Mark and Ying.
I love that satisfied look.. That's mark's trademark
sakurasoh Thanks!

Welcome to Penang. Do come back to enjoy more of Penang food.
dude... your video bring me so much happiness. I can eat vicariously through you. good job on your vids.
the dumpling that you ate is called Sui Kau... wantan is typically smaller and rounder. Glad that you enjoy wantan mee, that is my favorite!
Every locale that Mark visits, he gives a glimpse of the history & the ingredients, his food vocabulary is top notch...Georgetown Penang unfortunately also reminds me of MH370 the tragic flight with the reference to Captain Zaharie’s hometown as the airliner dipped its wings there during its weird trajectory...
I am so hungry right now and watching this video makes me wish I could teleport there and grab a quick meal! lol! Awesome vid!
hi Mark, the sauce generally consists of dark soy sauce (made with dates and soy hence it's sweet), pork lard (if you are lucky you get some crunchy chunks too), pepper, sesame oil and some stock.
the dumplings you ordered separately usually have mince pork (3 part fat and 7 part meat), water chestnuts, prawns). of course comes in a bowl of hearty broth with greens and drizzle of garlic oil 😍
Binge watching your Penang videos right now, going there next year, can't wait to try some of the delicious stuff you've shown us!
We in Malaysia especially the Chinese food loves to put in the dark soy sauce for color, it's not salty like the usual soy sauce that you had as condiment. It has a little bit sweet flavor to it, so don't be afraid of that dark sauce which most foreigners mistakenly thought of it as super saltiness. The sauce is always mixed with some soup base broth, hence it's not entirely poured from the bottle as sauce kind of thing.
David Lee Great, thanks for sharing David.
Umm and one more thing that thing in the soup actually call (Shui Jiao)or(Shui Gao)
loving the feel of this roadside eatery. reminds me of places in Laos. quiet streets, crumbling colonial buildings, maybe a river view, a stray dog..
jmpicturefly Oh yah, Laos is on another level of relaxation and calmness. I really want to go back to Laos soon.
Vientiane is more laid back, Penang is more modern. No river though.
When you wake up in Australia and have absolutely not way in hellll of getting Wanton Mee 😭😭😭 might be one of my favourite dishes of all time? So effffingggg GOOD!!

Hey Mark, did you know that most of the curry restaurant owners in England are originally from Bangladesh, not India? Given how much the British people love their curries, you sure get an idea of how great our Bangladeshi cuisine is.
I watch your vlogs on a regular basis and absolutely adore them. And I think you should definitely come visit our country one of these days and taste our rich-mouthwatering dishes. Hope to see you soon in Bangladesh!
Wantan mee is a great discovery for me at Penang. I ate one at Gurney Drive, the ones at the back. It was delicious, I kept coming back for more. Assam Laksa is also delicious, you should try Pasembur, Oyster Omelette, Penang style Rojak, and their fishball. I also enjoyed their vegetarian dishes at a hospital canteen when I accompanied my family, it was so good!

Ah I see.. It's such a wonderful thing to work and travel at the same time. Lucky you. Thanks for the vids.. Keep them coming. Take care! And thanks for responding.
Ah, Wantan Mee my absolute favourite dish that I ate in Georgetown .
From experience, all the Wantan Mee I have ate basically taste the same.
Junhtz334 Ok, cool thanks for sharing. This is the only one I've had in Penang so far.
Mark Wiens Kon Lou is Cantonese, meaning Dry Mix, even though it is not exactly dry, but compared to the noodles in soups, this is the version that does not have soup, hence dry mixed. Wonton mee is priced for the chewy texture, the springy feeling when you bite into the noodles. Good video. Good job. Also, I see you picked up the local customs of calling older people uncles and aunties. Very good.
Charles Macgan I agree...same here in Cambodia.
Looked nice!
I would really like to try dumplings one day.
Thanks Mark!
Hi Mark, I am so amazed at how you can eat wonderful foods for cheap!!! The dishes that you were eating looked amazing and soooo good!!! Where do you find all these places to eat, does friends and family suggest these places to you. I would not be able to find all these small places to eat. I think that the small mom and pop eating establishment are usually the best!!! Thank you again for another wonderful video.
Good choice Mark. Can't agree more with you on the atmosphere here, this place is pretty laid back and peaceful to enjoy a plate of Wantan Mee in Georgetown.
Hi Mark and Ying!! That's looks really good! The noodles looks really tasty the sauce is kinda different but it looks so delicious!I hope you can try to show us to cook that recipe at your place. Thanks again for the awesome video!-Elwyn-

Penang food is awesome. u gotta try Melaka (Malacca) food too on your next visit to Malaysia. Love Mark & Ying.
I remember having tried that (not at that particular place) in Georgetown. It was good, however, my all time favorite food in Penang was Cha Kuey Tiew which is stir fried rice noodle with seafood.
Both noodle dishes looked very good.
Hey Mark, I really enjoy your videos. I have a question for you. On which laptop do you edit your videos? It looks like you are on the go all the time, travelling to these awesome places. Which laptop do you use?
Great Video ! Love watching all your videos
Hey Mark. In KL, this noodle is eaten with picked green chilies (a must have). Besides char siew, other toppings include chicken feet (my fav!) and Chinese mushrooms.
*pickled
Aleena Wee Oh cool, thanks for sharing Aleena
you never go wrong with some tasty noodles....love your viddiez..greets from amsterdam
Actually the wrapped meat in the soup are dumplings not Wantan, Wantans are the crispy ones. Wantan are usually bite size and served with soup traditionally , not deep fried.
Beautiful buildings. The food looks so good as usual. I want some. 😃

Penang has the best food ever!
Wantan Mee is great, yes? Actually you shouldn't pick the peaceful ones, the more people the better the food. It has always been like that here. Or it's just morning, there isn't much people. Food looks good, I'll definitely visit this place.
hourgmorn Yah, I loved it! I'm sure there might be better in Penang, but this was pretty good I thought, and it was very close to where I was staying.
Mark Wiens Yeah, the noodles looks good. It's actually pretty cheap for Penang standards.
