500 S&W In A Nutshell - Ultimate Cartridge Breakdown
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 жов 2024
- In today's video, we will be breaking down the 500 S&W based on 10 different categories to get an overall score out of 100 points. The 500 S&W is currently the world's most powerful production handgun cartridge so let's see how it scores.
Revolver used has a 7.5” barrel
Load used - Underwood 350 gr xtp @ 1912 fps - 2842 ft-lbs
Not all projectiles/factory ammunition offerings are available at the time of recording. Some projectiles in a given diameter may not be suitable/useful for the cartridge being discussed (ex. Not all 0.308” bullets are suitable/useful in a 308 Winchester). Reloading can be dangerous and should only be done by competent individuals. If you choose to reload, always ensure your load data is from a reputable source and is rated for your specific firearm. Pricing and quantities reflect values at the time of recording. Supersonic range values assume a minimum supersonic velocity of 1,135 feet per second at sea level and a temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

@@bananaballistics Range maste asked me use one cartridge at the time!. I used 300G bullet you saw on Midway, loaded with W296, 1900 velocity. my ears are still ringing even though I had -31DB ear protection! - I will load them for lower velocity in a moth or so - I wonder if this causes concussion? Anyone: any comment?
The 500 S&W is a great handgun for a friend to own.
You called it.
The 500 had just come out. My son and I took mine to a public range that had a ‘tin can’ range. Everyone went out and set up their water bottles and cans.
When the range master called the range hot, I let a shot off at the milk jug I had set up.
The explosion knocked over ever other bottle/can on the range!!
I thought people were going to be pissed, but they weren’t. They just wanted to see what in the hell I was shooting!!!
Getting the 500 is also what started me reloading!!!
Kentucky Ballistics has entered the chat 👀
Good to see Midway USA backing your channel!
Lol
I have the Raging Bull in 500 S&W you are right about the range.. I fell like that scene from Robo Cop everyone stops shooting and looks around the corner to see what the hell just went off. I actually had a young man offer to let me shoot a box of 454 Casull from his weapon for just 1 shot from mine. I also own the 454 Casull so I did not take him up on his offer. I reload so I made the young mans day and let him have a shot. I'm all about the love of weapons on the range and many people have let me shoot their weapons to see whether I might like to own one. I have used Midway for about10 years. I have never bought 500 S&W factory loads at any price because you only get 20 rounds. I buy the components from Midway and get 50 or 60 for the same price as 20. All I have to o is put them together LOL.
My 460 does that it’s very interesting to see how quickly people react to it
Love this series! Can't wait for more. For me, 44 magnum is the upper limit of recoil for me to enjoy shooting. .500 S&W recoil gives me anxiety like i'm gonna drop the gun.
I was never in interested in the 500 I always thought of it novelty so people can say they have the world's powerful handgun. But awesome video that's why I hit the bell love your channel
It does have some uses for sure, but most people probably buy it for the novelty factor
I can't say for sure myself but.... 😒
... when the 500 comes out ONCE the problems are gone. No one sticks around to see the devastation of that BOOM!!! 💥 A 9mm is a scary noise to a thug, and a 12g even more so but when the trigger is pulled on a 500..... the neighborhood gets quiet. Cockroaches scatter into the crevices.
@@redfaux74You've clearly never drew a firearm in defense or fired a shot in anger.
@@mattmarzula - Obviously your a psychic. 🤢🤮 People like you are hilarious. Always trying to impress someone on a computer screen with your false testosterone surges. The guns we shoot, including the 500, you don't even want to be next to on a range. The percussion hits you in the face.
I shoot 50 to 250 rounds every week, various kinds of hand guns, shot guns and rifles. Sometimes on paper but mostly moving targets. The big calibers don't scare me at all. I enjoy my 12g's but my 500 does kick hard enough after 10 rounds I'm done. All my friends like the lighter loads. They don't shoot the bigger guns like this one. I do. My largest is much larger than a 500. Much.... You can carry it but not for far. But it can be moved by 1 sturdy man.
But I specialize in knives, swords, axes and pointy stuff.
@@mattmarzula He uses a .73 caliber musket as our forefathers intended :p
I absolutely love my 500 S&W, but at $2.10-$5.00+ per round, I couldn’t shoot it as much as I would like. Then I started reloading. Absolute game changer. It costs me between $0.40-$1.50 per round. I haven’t used it to harvest an animal yet. Hopefully that will change next year. OH! And my chrono says that there is about a 10 fps difference between rounds from hand loads. Normally it’s less than that with Accurate #9. The accuracy is absolutely phenomenal. OH! And it takes Large Rifle Primers. I don’t think you mentioned it.
Love the new format, looking forward to more!
My 500 S&W is my favorite handgun. Devastating on game and overall fun to shoot.
Oddly enough, the .50 AE is also appearing on that website for $2.10.
With the Desert Eagle, you also have the option of switching calibers, all the way "down" to .357 Magnum. Plus the gas operation tends to soak up some of the recoil. And of course the banana factor of the "point five-oh" has to be 10/10.
Yes I would like to see this cartridge featured next lol
It depends on how you say that "Ohhhhhh..." at the end. 😏
Love my DE, got it .44 and got the 50 AE barrel. Very reliable, I don’t see the slide dragging like others post.
Love this type of video brake down! Curious about .460 and a few other hand gun options, favorite UA-cam channel for sure
Reloads…..that is a great come back….i have to remember that one!👍👍
I have the H&R handi rifle in 500 S&W. Packs an even bigger punch! 🤜🏻
Oh.... the drama.... Your vids are getting really fun.
The .500 is basically a short and fat rifle round. I know it isn't classified as such, so it techically isn't, but the recoil involved makes it a much better option for a short lever-action rifle for example, much rather than a huge handgun. And when you do use it in a rifle, it's fully on par with the 45-70 as far as energy goes.
Well said. If I could afford a lever action chambered in one, that would be my choice.
One thing to consider nowadays is Defiant Munitions evolution of Solid Copper rounds that create the highest expansion, good penetration, and amazingly large petaling through wounds, that are also comparable in price to quality brands of ammo. Definitely check out their stuff as im surprised they arent getting enough attention. 500 S&W loadings achieved about over an inch of expansion to 1.5 inches. I know this isnt exactly related but I just want to spread the word for those interested and for this channel to take a look at.
I’ll have to check them out
I shoot my 500 magnums quite a bit. Where the real savings are with this cartridge is casting your own boolits. That is an art in itself and is not for every one. Mixing of alloys for proper hardness involves some math and testing afterwards but it's not too difficult. My favorite is a 440gr RNFP gas check. I think I can get my cost per round below 50 cents a piece.👍
Do one on the 460 mag
Really like the format with categories. That's a caliber you rent at the range for a one and done. Kind of wanted to see the 700gr
Yes, Midway is my go-to store for ammo parts, etc. That's for sure and for certain.
Based on this review I would highly recommend .500 S&W to any female shooter over the age of 50, with osteoporosis and arthritis in the hands and wrists. Great tool for purse carry.
I took my 460S&W to an indoor range. I already had it to myself but the RO told me their CCTV was greying out on each shot.
Your breakdown is so true. I love this video.
I bought a Ruger SFAR. Took it to the indoor range. The first shot, I tried to warn everyone, the muzzle flash and boom stunned everyone. WHAT THE Xxxx!!!!!!! I warned them every time I was going to start shooting. It throws all its muzzle blast to the sides because of the brake.
Loved the brake down
Dude all I collect are hand cannons. I have a Desert Eagle in .44/50AE, S&W 460, S&W.500, 1911 converted to 460 rowland and last but not least a BFR chambered for the mighty 500 Bushwhacker which makes the S&W500 look like a .44
Nice! Which is your favorite?
I'm thinking of getting the 460 in October Over the 500 mag in a 7.5inch , mostly for the lower recoil and to shoot more of it.
If you could only have one for shtf, which do you bring that's a hand Canon?
@@oscarbear7498 My 460 is the 7.5" Performance Center version
As far as favorite, I really don't have one because they are all expensive to shoot
But the .460 is the most versatile of my collection
If shtf due to how hard it would be to find magnum ammo I probably go with a 9mm glock. I have thousands of rounds of magnum ammo but there's no way I could carry it all with me
I handload for my 500 and most often use cast bullets from Montana Bullet Works or Cast performance. They help reduce the cost, and I can shoot more often. I enjoyed your video. The 500 has a Fun Factor of Ten!
Why don't you cast your own lead?
I cast for 44 Magnum, 45 Colt, 454 Casull, .444 Marlin, 450 BushMaster, 45-70, and 458 Winchester Magnum. But, so far I haven't found a .500" mold that I really like. Also, 50-cal. gas checks are rare. If I find one to my liking, I would. I have about 150 lbs. of linotype, so am good to go.@@C4AJ
If SHTF happens in Alaska with Big Brown Bears maybe... LOL. In AK, it is definitely what I carry on my hip when out salmon fishing though. Or out 4 wheeling to get to the fishing spot. Or Camping. OK pretty much anytime I'm out in the woods in AK. Wife carries the Scandium 44 mag S&W. That's a pretty fun gun to shoot too. As always though, great video, Thank you.
When does summer start and end in AK?
@@redfaux74 Summer? what's that?* LOL... depends though really. I mean where I was we've had blizzards on Mother's Day.. but maybe south in Juneau they start Summer much sooner. Sorry for the non answer but it really does depend upon where in AK.
Hopefully you’re carrying some hearing protection around too! Lol
@@bananaballistics I think if I was charged by a bear I'd need the hearing protection for my own SCREAMING.. LOL
There we go
I get a banana every time you post a video brother. 🍌 Excellent stuff. 😊
I have a LOT of predators where I live. Lots of mountain lion, occasionally wolves, coyote and they are getting sightings of bear coming back into this area every year. That's why I got a 500. Sasquatch better behave himself in my area.
Not to mention every kind of deer (even moose) imaginable. When I pull the trigger I want whatever it is to go down.
I appreciate it! Lol glad to hear it works well in the real world
The 500 S&W magnum revolver can also chamber and shoot 500 Special and the 500 JRH aka 500 S&W Short magnum. Pretty versatile actually.
As an AK Fisherman residing in FL and not wanting to be wholly dependent on the guide carring a 12ga with deer slugs for three anglers I always carried surreptitiously a 44mag Revolver onto the rivers (notwithstanding Fed. Regs.) and knew I would have to get lucky to prevent a bear from getting to me with this gun. Before Trump changed the regs which have now reverted I would rather be fined than eaten. With the 500mag I now have enough energy to give me a chance of stopping a misbehaving bear. Thankfully I've never had to fire for the last 30+ years although I've unholstered several times. As far as recoil goes with a bear comming this gun would feel I know in my heart equal to a 22 short and not be noticeable. Since I don't use for sport I only use Hornady $$$ ammo and do not concern myself with the cost and only replace annually to keep ammo fresh letting me shoot aging ammo occasionally. You are correct when I shoot at indoor range it gets everyones attention. Ray Stormont
+1 for more Banana Score videos!
The .44 Mag. will whistle through 3/16" steel plate with a 215-grain hard cast bullet too. See the Lyman Handbook of Cast Bullets published in 1958. The bullet mold number is 429303H.
Look up the 500 Bushwhacker. I'm having mine converted right now.
It would be cool to see more handguns tested on the steel. Thx
That's a Slober Knocker of a round!!!!
If you grade the 308 win and 30-06 Springfield, the 06 will score slightly higher on everything except suppressability and cost. So I wonder if they would end up with identical scores or atleaste very close
Since it went though 3/16s mild steel it SHOULD go through a deer, as long as he doesn't have his vest on. Great vid Thanks
You gotta put ballistic gel behind some steel so you could catch frag and the bullets , great video
I never thought the 500 kicked all that bad. Some 44 Mag defense loads definitely feel spicier in the hand. 🤠
I wonder if you would do (or have done?) the S&W 460. Most of the power but the ability to fire the....wait for it... 460, the 454 Casull, and the 45 LC. Ohhhh, ahhhh
I have the 460 with a 14 inch barrel, previously had one with a 8 inch barrel. I love it. Caliber flexibility is nice, but on my 8 inch gun 45 colt shot substantially HIGHER than 460 ammo… Hard to explain, but that’s what I did. I don’t know about my 14 inch gun, I’ve only shot 460 in it, no other calibers yet. Flexibility is nice, but if it comes at the price of huge change of point of impact, then I believe the advantage is negated just a touch, unless you’re really good at keeping notes and changing your sights.
Also, in terms of commercially available cartridges, it doesn’t seem that the 500 is any more powerful than the 460. For example, you can get 360 grain hard cast from Underwood that’s rated at 1900 ft./s, take a look at the availability of similar weight bullets for a 500, I don’t think that you’ll find them going any faster which means they don’t have any more energy, just more air resistance. I’m not a reloader, so it’s possible that a max load 500 has more energy than max load 460… But comparing off the shelf stuff I don’t see the advantage of the 500.
@@19derrick77 I just use mine at ranges up to 25 M. The 45 LC keeps costs down and doesn't numb the palm of my hand like the other 2 loads. I only have the 8 inch. I can't imagine a 14 in barrel on a handgun. lol
@@gavincross2902 45 colt and 460 have same point of impact with your gun?
That should be the next cartridge I do this for
@@19derrick77 Not really but close enough to center to do the job at 25 meters. I don't shoot grouping with a revolver, especially with double action and the heavy trigger pull. :)
I would love to see 44 magnum tested on steel
While your on the 50 cal train at the moment can you do the 50AE next and some gel testing

Cool,man
Great video and great information
Definitely need to do the same thing for other cal too .. I’ve never thought about the weight limit
Perhaps there should be eleven categories, the eleventh being the fun factor. I believe in this instance it would have elevated the overall score, fun being, well fun!
I’ve shot Maby 600 rds from mine but I reload and cast and shoot blackpowder out of em a lot. It’s a fun accurate gun once u shoot it a while recoil isn’t a thing anymore a .357 seems like a .22 when I first started shooting it my elbows would ache after 10-20 rds

The 500 Magnum uses slow burning gun powder. To achieve maximum force behind the bullet. The recommended barrel length. Must be a minimum of 8".
Are you reloading 500's? What die set do you recommend?
So much fun to shoot that I had to take out another mortgage 😂
6:27 I just didn't like that style and sadly I'm weird and I usually pick my guns based on looks, and when I want a revolver, I want it to be more "TRADITIONAL" looking. So went with the 8in Xframe with swappable compensators.
Can make this a series?
I don't have enough @$$ to shoot a .500 but it looks like fun.
Do you have a video like this for the 338 lapua magnum?
I had a 500 S &W with the 4 inch barrel and my 12 year old niece loved to shoot it a typical day of shooting for me, her, and her dad was about 200 rounds and she shot one third of them, because we were taking turns. Soo I just laugh when I hear people talk about the horrible recoil of the 500. BTW she is now an adult and she owns it.

How do you find the foot ppunds of recoil for a round. What website do you use?
You shot a steel plate with a what type of 500 S and W round ? Why man, WHY ?
Seems like it would make a great straight wall cartridge for states that require that. Just imagine that in a hard cast lead round. Don't know how it pans out ballistically compared to buckhammer and 350 legend. Oh well it's a 50 .

can you please put how much is something in metric units too , you have wiewers outside USA , and they need to use calculator when watching your videos 😇😊🙃
Compared to what .44 mag.
45/70 is still the optimum .
Plus you can buy the ammo any where..
45/70 needs a longer barrel, it's not good in short barrels , and you can't cut the brass smaller for specials since it tappers .
If 45/70 was completely straight, it would be the best for sure.
When u get over 450 grain and the short barrel it starts kicking
There's no kill like over kill.

40 super?
460 S&W I believe is the next handgun

Same thing with reload testing, but you knew that already, right? Every reloader knows that!"

IMO, the .460 and 500 S&W Magnums are MUCH better carbine cartridges than handgun cartridges.
How does this have more energy than a 45-70 It just doesn't make sense especially considering their barrel sizes😂
It is pretty nuts!
Because the pressures this gun runs around is typically 50k-60k while 45/70 is typically around 20k-35k, literally double the operating pressures.
