  • In today's video, we will be breaking down the 460 S&W based on 10 different categories and giving it an overall score out of 100 points. The 460 S&W is currently the world's fastest production revolver cartridge, producing nearly as much muzzle energy as the 500S&W. Let's see how it scores. Thanks for watching!
Revolver used has a 10.5” barrel
    Load used - Hornady 200 gr FTX @ 2,200 fps - 2,149 ft/lbs muzzle energy
    * Not all projectiles/factory ammunition offerings are available at the time of recording. Some projectiles in a given diameter may not be suitable/useful for the cartridge being discussed (ex. Not all 0.308” bullets are suitable/useful in a 308 Winchester). Reloading can be dangerous and should only be done by competent individuals. If you choose to reload, always ensure your load data is from a reputable source and is rated for your specific firearm. Pricing and quantities reflect values at the time of recording. Supersonic range values assume a minimum supersonic velocity of 1,135 feet per second at sea level and a temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Steel testing is setup at 50 yards for rifle cartridges and 25 yards for handguns using A529 gr 55 mild steel.
*These tests are meant for entertainment and educational purposes only. Shooting steel can be dangerous, so do not try any of these tests at home!

With a cylinder machined for moon clips the 460 can shoot: 460, 454, 45 colt, 45 Schoefield, 45 acp, 45 super, 45 win-mag, 45 bushmaster, 45 raptor. basically any .452 diameter bullet on a straight wall cartridge that does not exceed a chamber pressure of 65,000 psi. Mine is a 460V Smith and Wesson X-frame with a 5 inch muzzle brake equipped barrel. TK Custom altered my cylinder to take their stainless steel moon clips in 45 ACP. And the moon clips also hold the 451 Detonics, 460 Rowland, 45 Super and 45 Winchester magnum cartridges using Starline brass. Versatility Maximum!!!!
Used an extra long firing pin so the rimmed cartridges are reliably fired without need of a moon clip.

Should’ve done more homework. Would’ve seen the two companies that developed the ammo for the .460 to obtain the velocity of 2400 fps. Didn’t see that on your ammo search results. Didn’t see Buffalo bore for that matter. Point is, everything kinda falls to the wayside when not using the ammo it was based on to be the highest-velocity revolver cartridge in the world, firing bullets at up to 2,409 feet per second. Would be nice to see some videos on that. Love your videos. You do a good job. Keep ‘em comin.

I couldn’t find any factory loads going the claimed 2,400 fps that Wikipedia and other websites were claiming. Just the 2200 fps hornady loads that I was using. Buffalo bore seemed to discontinue the 360 gr load they had, but the underwood one referenced mirrors it’s performance. I appreciate you watching and thanks for the kind words.

Have to factor in something though , when he mentioned it can shoot 45lc and 454 as well as 460. That means you can reload any combination of 45lc , 454 and 460. Given every option you have of all 3 calibers, there are a ton of options out there. The Hodgson website shows 211 available load possibilities for the 45 colt, 86 for the 454 casull, and 96 for the 460s&w.

Love the humor...great presentation. I was impressed with a friend's 460 SW...bought one and realized it was a waste of ammo to shoot without an optic. After years in my closet, I mounted an EoTech on it, purchased some Buffalo Bore 300 solids...after much practice, I took a Cape Buffalo at 27 yards and a warthog at 55 yards...one shot, each, and clean through. Very comfy carry in my shoulder holster...amazing pistol!

Actually... The .500 S&W Magnum can also fire the .500 JRH and the .500 Special. They're very uncommon rounds, though, so it's not much of a flex for the .500 S&W Magnum. That said, it is also possible to shoot a few more round out of the .460 S&W Magnum like the .45 Schofield and the .45 Auto Rim.

Theres a chart made by s&w that talked about barrel length on a 460.
The conclusion was shooting a 200 ftx had the best proformance at 7.5 inches from a revolver, with Diminishing returns until you got to 14inches for slightly more power.
Basically saying you dont need the 10.5 inch, it also had lower velocity compared to the 7.5 inch....? Why idk but that what smith and wesson stated.

My first shots with the 460 were in an indoor range. That thing is the loudest firearm I’ve ever heard. When I squeezed the trigger, the percussion was so strong that dust and a ceiling tile fell out and about a half a dozen casings fell off of the top of the cinder block walls that divided the shooting lanes. After a gathered my composure and looked around, I saw 3-4 people with their faces pressed up against the back window of the shooting lane asking “What the hell was that?!” 😂

I rented one with the 8.375 barrel at a gun store outside of Charlotte Nc. Got twenty rounds so my college roommate and i could load it up and have two turns each. They put us in the four bay rifle side of the indoor range. There was an instructor working with a student when we went in. When he saw the gun he grabbed his student and stepped out until we finished. He said "that barrel is ported, we don't want to be standing next to him when he fires it". Cameras do a really poor job capturing the fireball that comes out of that gun when you fire it. I was expecting so much more kick but it really wasn't bad. Gun is so heavy it tames it down pretty well. I finally have some expendable cash and have started looking for one at my local stores.

    Excellent review.
I think that you will find that polymer tipped projectiles are among the poorest performers against steel targets in all velocity regimes, irrespective of their higher bc's, which you probably already know!I agree with one of the other comments regarding testing the Underwood hardcast versus the 3/8" mild steel.
I have both the .460 and .500 S&W 20" barrel T/C barrels and will keep you advised when I get a chance to test them. I am currently working on seeing how what I believe to be a 75gr.
AP projectile that I found in my cartridge collection will do versus a 3/4" AR500 plate that stopped every .50 BMG round on the Whotee Who channel (where they tried essentially everything except for the SLAP rounds.
I'll be using a 25" barreled .22/243 that runs above 4,000 fps with a number of 62 gr. fmj powder combinations. It sails right through 1/2" AR500 and AR550...with the fmj's! The 3/4" AR500 target is quite a bit harder to defeat without using tungsten cores.
By the way if you can find any of the 7.92 (German) Smk-h rounds from WWII, they will beat anything else out there that doesn't require federal approval... when used in a number of different platforms. They equal or exceed the performance of any current tungsten (or other) rounds that I am aware of! Keep up the excellent work and keep your powder dry!
P.S.- The Smk-h's that I mentioned above were able to defeat a 2" thick Inconel target when pushed to velocities in the 6,000 fps range! That same target stopped multiple rounds of 20mm Lahti AP out of a good friends anti-tank cannon...and they were not even close to penetrating it! In the .50BMG the French company Anthena (back in the late 1990's) offered a PPI round that was the best performer vs.
mild steel than any other.50 rounds including the standard SLAP rounds.
It was able to penetrate 2.5"- 3.0" of cold rolled mild steel, depending upon barrel used. I haven't seen it anywhere on U-tube or the web for that matter.
Surprisingly, it did not utilize any heavy metals in its construction and weighed 750 grains and did not employ a ballistic cap which was surprising given that it was one of only 3 AP variants (out of ~ 20 (including experimentals) that did fail in some way at velocities of 5.000 - 5.500 fps, versus even the softer cold rolled non RHA steel targets!

Close to zero people edc it, or hunt with it because of better options.

The 460 S&W Magnum and the 450 Bushmaster are pretty close in a lot of categories. I'm a little surprised S&W hasn't made an X Frame chambered in 450 Bushmaster, they already offer one chambered in 350 Legend. A 450 Bushmaster chambered X Frame might sell more pistols for S&W to people that already have rifles chambered for it, 450 Bushmaster ammo is a LITTLE cheaper than 460 S&W Magnum and there is a pretty good variety.

I would choose the 460 over the 500 every time. Less recoil, less expense for practicing with the option of using 45 colt and 454 casull ammo which will allow for more proficiency with the hand gun. Also, if you hit a charging bear with a 460, or 454 for that matter, in the same spot that a 500 would stop the bear, I'm pretty sure that bear is not going to shrug off that hit and keep coming.

also for hunting in certain states they only allow straight wall cases up to 1.8 inches and bullet can't be any larger than 45 caliber which 460 meets those regulations.

As for them naming it the .460 with a .452 bullet diameter, well... as a caliber nerd myself, this is extremely common. In my experience, more often than not, the actual caliber name does not match the bullet diameter. Plenty of examples where it does, but also plenty where it doesn't. Most .45 calibers are .458 in diameter. Most .30 calibers are .308 in diameter. The .270Win is .277 in diameter. It's a lot more common when the caliber name is designated in fractions of an inch rather than millimeters.
