- you should backup your data after successful access to the HDD, it is likely your HDD Damaged, don't be panic.

This video needs to be re-uploaded in 1080p, some of the text stuff and actions aren't readable with the visual quality being so low quality instead of a HD picture. Because this is an excellent video in dealing with this kind of problem which is rare enough but is something we all should be made far more aware of? When NTFS hard drives go all "RAW" on users all of a sudden!

This worked for me. I accidentally deleted the partition of my 2tb external hdd. I tried the Data Recovery and the Partition Recovery softwares from Minitool but the data recovery was displaying 100+ hours to finish. I saw this video and tried. Now all data recovered. I didn't do the permission thing since my drive showed up after the chkdsk process. Thank you so much for saving 2 plus years worth of my precious data!

chkdsk works only if the file system is NTFS
it does not work if file system is FAT32 like in pen drives
and says chkdsk is not available for raw drives

Thank you so much man!! I nearly had a heart attack.. I was not able to access the device as I accidentally disconnected the device while something was copying. Glad I came across this video otherwise have been relying on really long route of recovering and formatting. Fortunately I didn't face any issues shown in the video after the Chksk command is complete.

yes it did work for me ! CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives, only showed up for me in normal mode. Just use safe mode and use /f for fix at the end. You should be good to go after that. Good luck!

NTFS, but now it's RAW and chkdsk does not work on RAW disks, as we know...
not all the conditions HDD can be succeed converted in this way, if you've been following it step by step and still not succeeded, I apologize if it can't help you, maybe your HDD is different hardware conditions.
No, it is normal problem with RAW disks...look at comments, I am not the only one. You just, or windows actually, cannot use chkdsk with RAW HDD's, that is it.
yes, this is fake. when he write chkdsk at 1:10, it writes file system is NTFS not RAW.

You can probably run the chkdsk as Administrator. My entire external drive was changed to RAW format. I downloaded and used a program called Recuva to recover the files I felt most important before trying to follow this video. After using that program, I followed this video and typed cmd in the search, then right-clicked, and chose to 'run as administrator.' Then I put in the chkdsk f/ H: (which is the drive of mine that's not working). Then it's starting to do the process under Stage 1: Examining the basic file system structure...
So far many files are being read, but many also say 'File record segment is unreadable.' It may be because those are the ones I recovered already with the Recufa software. I'll have to wait until the process is finished to know for sure.

@@EveryonesADude : Hi. Trying to remember correctly, this allowed me to change the HDD format from RAW properly after waiting a while. By using the program called Recuva, I was able to recover all but a very small number of files that I'm aware of. I tried a few things to get the HDD working again properly after changing the hard drive format to the proper one to use as normal but gave up on it. I was able to save new information on it again, but then when hooking it up to another PC and trying to get into the files, it would just freeze up when trying. But the good news for me was being able to save all that precious (to me) data, including resumes, tax information, and a huge number of MP3s I had purchased over at least 15 or more years with plenty of music I still listen to often! I give props to people trying to help even if what works for others may not have worked for me. In my case, the recovery software was the way to at least save nearly all the information, and I'm still very thankful nearly a half a year later! 8)

Thank you so much for responding!! I haven't checked out the program you mentioned, but I'll definitely give it a shot. This raw code is just making it inaccessible 😵 it seems as though I have to format the card and then attempt to recover all of my photos and videos 😭

I had the same problem and the only way to fix it was booting Ubuntu on a usb drive and using the simple command line “sudo ntfsfix”. For better instructions, search on yt for a video called “solve ntfs mount problem on ubuntu”

Thanks a lot man. Now I''m able to access my WD 2 TB external HDD after it was after it became RAW partition when it was unplugged accidentally. I was able to open my HDD just after the first step 'ckhdsk' cmd prompt. Though I know that I can recover my data, If I didn't know this method, I would have to invest around 9,000 INR to get another HDD to save the recovered files. You saved my money and helped me stay cool. Thank You!!! (btw I liked ur video)

i had the same problem i changed my laptop that i was working on and it was saying the same and tried to attach my raw external hard disk to another pc and it works for me to do chkdsk and i am now recovering data with m3data recovry app .. try to change ur pc it self .. try on another one .. or another version of windows

Well this worked on the first command, it did a quick scan / fix and listed a few folders I was working with when the drive crapped out. It then mounted after this and I'm backing this thing up asap... ALWAYS EJECT your drives safely, and when you first get "errors detected on this drive'' always back it up. I had no luck pulling up any kind of partition in TestDisk but this Chkdsk worked. Thanks.

Thanks a lot, it worked on Windows 10 Repair Cmd. I've got my windows system error after unplugged my ssd and replugged it. I tried to recovery and auto repair through windows installation but no effort came up with any result. After checking diskpart list volume, I found that my system partition's letter has changed to :E letter and Raw format. Then I found your video. Greatly helpful

It worked. I have a 2 TB HDD Passport. Search many solutions on the internet and youtube before but none of them worked. My problem is when i plug my harddisk, there is a notif sound, it appears on my computer but cannot open. Then i open disk management, It says RAW file format. I follow your instruction by typing chkdsk /f H: because my disk name is H. Then i tried to opn it and it worked on the first step. I didnt follow the next step because the first step has shown a result. Thank you. You are my savior.

You ROCK! Thank you!!!! Situation: Hard Drive somehow went "RAW" after plugging into a windows 10 computer, which failed to read the hard drive. Connected back to windows 7, follows this guy/girl's instructions and successfully repaired the corrupt MFT. " chkdsk /f F: " worked correctly without a problem. Didn't even need to change permissions. After the CMD screen performed the repair, the external drive showed up on auto play and was able to access immediately. Cheers!

Thanks! Also worked using Powershell as adm and CHKDSK /F diskletter: There was no need to fix properties/security as they were ok. The disk is probably broken, but at least I'm now able to backup what I need.
