@@justsomedude1593 she told us after the forsaken campaign “I have only ever been a supporting character in your story.” She understands that to us there is little she can offer in terms of friendship, mainly because the guardian canonically has very few true friends as we’re always on the move and very distant, which is how we avoid entanglements like our own nightmare.
@@Sean-idk no Cayde actually thanks Ikora for doing it in his message because unlike even Zavala, Cayde knew the only reason Ikora would ever kill him would be because he fell to the darkness. Seeing past Destiny cutscenes makes me wish Bungie hired Byf to narrate certain events in-game or in the Timeline tab in Destination, for in-game recaps. Byf is essentially the Morgan Freeman of Destiny in terms of narration. Also, if he does another cinematic project like Dynasty, I hope it opens with his Warlock reciting the tale of Fellwinter to another Guardian.
First time we spoke since the black garden too. My headcanon is that what we saw in the black garden in vanilla Destiny traumatized us so much and Cayde’s death is what eventually brought us out of it.
I like to imagine instant the guardian speaks, even if he didn't hear it, a health bar appeared at the top of Uldren's field of view that read "The Guardian" and boss battle music started playing. He got the main character to speak for the first time in about 5 years
Confrontation with the Nightmares is just like the Shadows from Persona 4. You can’t fight or deny them. You must accept them to defeat them. Deny them and they gain strength or remain undealt with.
I KNEW IT. I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS OF PERSONA 4 WHEN CROW STARTED SAYING "YOU'RE NOT ME". Like bruh, don't do that. A weird looking boss is gonna come out of you.
What’s the most scary part of this story is peoples trauma is no longer confined to just the bearer. The nightmare of Uldren Sov has spoken to a number of characters and has been responded to. It used to be just powerful foes being strong enough to make contact, now it can be the one person or thing that’s hurt you the most.
@@Zer0megaXX It's more like their marriage fell apart after the death of their son (which Zavala considers his fault) then she grew old and died after remarrying and having two daughters. So he more so blames himself for not being enough, not strong enough to protect their son and not strong enough to stay with her after. It's tragic as fuck.
Byf, your comments at the end are very refreshing and very much the right thing to say for those facing their own recovery journey from past trauma. I listen because I love the way you present the lore, but this last portion made me so pleased as a trained crisis counselor. Kudos.
"Everyone gets a nightmare" Well, except us, apparently. Though I wonder who OUR nightmare would really be? Taniks, maybe? Cause it always comes back to Taniks, apparently
Go replay shadowkeep bruh. Our nightmares were some of the enemies we faced in the past. That was the point of shadowkeep. We and Eris already overcame our nightmares which is why we’re unaffected this season
The final boss of Destiny will be the nightmare of Exo, lightbearer, darkness weilding, SIVA Taniks the disciple of the Witness. This will be the 7th fight against him, so, it is perfect for Bungie.
Can I please just say… I’m SO GRATEFUL for Byf’s comments about trauma…. As someone who has a lot of it, who struggles with it, and sometimes fails to cope with it, this was emotionally intense. But his recognition of the struggles of people who suffer from trauma was huge. Thank you, Byf, especially for this episode.
I will always appreciate Cayde remembrance. Even when he had just a few lines of dialogue back in D1, his presence was so influential. And entertaining. Cayde "The hive are in the middle of some kind of funeral, so..." Eris "Not a funeral. A death ceremony. Crota's essence is being prepared for the next realm." Cayde "Riiight. So when you get to this funeral, Oryx will be watching closely..."

I know it’s probably not going to happen like this, but if we (the Guardian) were to get a Nightmare, wouldn’t it be kinda cool if it was a Nightmare of ourselves? The way I see it unfolding is as follows: Once this “Nightmare Reflection” revealed itself to us, it would try to convince us to cast off the Vanguard, The City, the Traveler, and the Light and “embrace salvation” by accepting the Darkness, the Pyramids and The Witness. Maybe it would rehash traumatic events to try and sway us. It wouldn’t work, but it would definitely make us reevaluate what we, as Guardians, really believe in and how much we’re willing to sacrifice. Again, I highly doubt it’s going to play out like this if we end up getting a Nightmare, it’s just a fun theory.
@@ahab5735 True, but that was The Witness speaking in Shadowkeep. I’m talking about seeing a Nightmare made entirely of a darker version of ourselves. A twisted reflection that whispers in our ear constantly during missions, comprised of all the thoughts our Guardian has pushed away from their mind.
But that wouldn't make sense since our nightmares are shadows of our past. A dark version of our Guardian hasn't existed yet and so isn't a memory or a part of our past.
Honestly the nightmare of Cayde I think should be haunting us also cus our guardian was there and really pressed a "if I only had been faster, if only I followed in the jump, IF ONLY WE HAD BEEN IN TIME" I really hope we get pushed with it.
Cayde would be similar to how he was if he were a nightmare. The same Joker who can never been replaced. The Wildcard, the loose end, The Gunslinger. Albeit, a darker version of our friend.
@@RurouniHiro "I have a massive headache for some reason. Oh yeah... I nearly forgot. I caught a bullet. Remind me, where were you when that happened?" -Nightmare Cayde
In my head canon, My Guardian's nightmare is himself. The death of Cayde left him filled with rage and revenge, and that consumed him. He made decisions that he still regrets to this day. And now they're back to haunt him once more. Dang, Ikora's nightmare is Cayde? Emotional damage indeed.
I’d say the guardian’s nightmare might be repressed memories of past iterations of time of failure to stop the darkness. Prob just me who thinks that tho

In Calus’ Fanfictions and from the Stanger’s Dark Future story, having us turn is something almost critical to having our enemies winning. The idea of possibly facing one of them, it doesn’t even have to be a Nightmare, there’s plenty of Vex fuckary for it to make sense.
"Crow is not Uldren." Ikora seethes. The Nightmare smirks. "Right. Just like I'm not Cayde." This hits me different for some reason, and i almost cried on this part.

Thank you for your words of wisdom at the end. Many times words don’t reach me because of the walls I put up to protect myself, but your word were able to reach me and help me at this moment and time when I need it the most.
If we think back to your video about Cayde after his passing you brought up the vow of Cayde. 1. Accept your past mistakes. Learn from them and be at peace with them. 2. Dont be afraid that you are and have been less than perfect. 3.find someone or something in your life that is an unimpeachable good. Something to guide you home and to teach you wrong and right. 4. Do good for the sake of the world and do good for you. With these lessons in mind, we all have strayed from this season we've avenged Cayde. As you said in the video, we all have trauma but everyone chooses in a way how they respond to that trauma and live with it. With our Guardian we, like Eris, have many traumas to uncover and we'll have to face them eventually. The message of this season thus far is teaching us not to be debilitated by those traumas. Its teaching us that in some way we'll have to face them whether we want to or not. Running away is no longer an option. Cayde carried his traumas, lived them, and fiund his way to move forward. These Nightmares may be some type of power of the darkness but how can we use it to our benefit? How can we make this power work against those who seek to harm us with it. I believe we'll defeat it but only time will tell how we do so.
I think the most important part of the Trespasser lore tab is that last line from the Nightmare of Cayde, "Right, Just like I'm not Cayde." We've gotten the impression so far from the main seasonal story that the trauma of the haunted person is what gives voice to the Nightmares. I think this last line really shows that Ikora knows that this isn't actually Cayde, but still can't get over the trauma.
That ending was something spectacular I am currently a physican associate/assistant student with a special focus in psychiatry/behavioral medicine, and I am a survivor of much with a diagnosis of PTSD, I will say from my experiences you hit the nail on the head and I applaud you for your wise words for your community
i cant wait to see what’s coming for ikora, they’ve slowly been giving her more story importance recently and the coming expansions seem like they could focus on her
I heard an anecdote about trama if you cut a tree as a sapling it’ll leave a mark that takes up most of the trunk but as it grows it’ll take up less and less even if the wound itself doesn’t change the tree grows around it
What if the nightmare our guardian faces is the evil version of ourselves? The one that originates from the timeline Elsie Bray (the Exo Stranger) was from, where the darkness won and corrupted our guardian. It would make sense and be a reasonable fear considering we now have darkness abilities like Stasis and other dark subclasses in the future.
Ya broke my heart with this one my man, and now I feel a much deeper connection to Ikora as a character, knowing that throughout her entire life, her deepest regret was the loss of Cayde and her inability to really do anything about it. Feels like a kindred spirit
@@ahab5735 Yeah...but no. Personally Forsakens ending was very underwhelming, saving a weakened Uldren then maybe putting a bullet in him was disappointing. I wanted to put him through as much pain as he put Cayde and our guardian through.
Thanks for this video. Navigating the vicissitudes of life, it's hard work and part of the human condition. Everyone of us has a negative script running on a loop in our mind. Choosing not to listen to it and turning down the volume is challenging and takes effort. Cheers to Bungie for acknowledging mental health in such a smart and thoughtful way. This season's story is outstanding, Crow's acceptance, Ikora choosing not to engage. These are valuable lessons wrapped in a video game. It's so good. Anyway, thanks again Byf and you're correct talking to a professional is the correct play.
Man... I didn't read Tresspasser's lore so i was surprised... When Byf played that cutscene... I cried again. I still freaking cry. I loved Cayde as a character sooo *much*And when he passed, that void in my heart never filled. As a guardian, if I had a nightmare it would be Cayde. Because I cry just at the thought of seeing him laying there on that floor. As I slid to my knees before him, wishing, praying there was anything I could do. I carry Ace with me always. As a reminder of someone who's positivity and free spirit made me smile and appreciate life. But also as a reminder of my failure. I failed you that day Cayde. We were both hunters and we should have rode that thing to the sublevels together, screaming like mad lads. I miss him. It's just like Ikora said... I should have been there...
I’d love for *MY* character’s Nightmare to be Risen Savathun; she just hasn’t left my mind since finishing the Witch Queen, a true missed opportunity ruined by our Ghost & Ikora immediately being hostile. (Can explain more)
Amazing video. I love the fact that My Name Is Byf can be so relatable to people. I appreciate Cayde being brought back, but I still feel the same heartbreak as I did during the Forsaken campaign.
Byf you mentioned a couple videos ago about a classification of how powerful someone's light is. Something about ikora being an extremely powerful gaurdian. I wanted to know more about that maybe all the classifications including how powerful our own gaurdian is and even how powerful savathun must have been would be really cool to explore and learn about. Just fruit for thought.
i’d love to hear about that as well, maybe someone knows if he’s talked about it before? if not, maybe in the future when there’s a lore grace period (if that’s possible lol)
My question is: why put this lore on SHIRO-4S gun? I mean Shiro doesn't even have anything to do with the gun anymore and I wonder why Does bungie just hate the character? Like why does bungie actively forsake the character when he has tons of potiental.
Like we know more on the exo stranger than him. And we know he still works for the vanguard Crow stated he did a report on FWC so why? I'd like to see him that's about it.
It’s a criminal shame that Bungie won’t be doing Legendary versions of the older campaigns. Imagine how awesome it’d have been to have super tough fights against the Barons and culminating with the giant meatball. Woulda been one for the ages
I would've thought Cayde would be the Young Wolf's nightmare, considering how much of an impact his death had left. I feel it would've been strong writing too to see our character face to face with a malicious entity playing with their guilt and regret of letting a good friend die.
Amazing video, great advice at the end. This season has been my favorite so far, too personal, too real. Showing the power of narration in video games.
Cayde is worth a visit. Thanks again for the video. I hope there’s more Cayde 6 content somewhere else to revel in. He is the reason I began playing D2 in the first place. Great storyline for a character

If anything, you're stronger for it, since you're facing whatever hurt you head on and wanting to overcome it. You're trying to understand your pain to either move on or learn how to better cope with it. Nothing but improvements. You are bettering yourself for it.
rewatching that cutscene from forsaken just gives me chills, goddamn. Its amazing to see how far the vanguards come, just from a few bits of story, here and there.
When you strip it all down, as powerful as Cayde was Ikora and Zavala have power kept so well in check it takes a invasion to try throw them off there game... There's a part of every vanguard in us... What we choose to do with that power defines us as a character in this game. Love your work brother 👍🏻

It's a testimony to the voice actors and bunnies storytelling when after the years, I still get choked up listening to that scene with ikora and zavala after caydes death
I was waiting for this video. Whenever I get a new Exotic whether it be armor or weapons, Ghosts, Sparrows or even Ships. I always read the lore tab of those exotics. And see this lore tab on a gun that belonged to Shiro-4 one of Caydes friends stings even more.
Thanks Byf, this season really hits hard doesn't it? It's made me think about some trauma I've faced in 2020 and you made me realize that maybe facing it head on isn't the right approach. Good video my guy, keep up the fine work!
I only started playing D2 in October. I started as a Warlock as a friend recommended. When I watched Cayde-6 die, I swore I'd get revenge. He was my favorite guardian and I miss him. I'm a Hunter now, in his honor.
In my humble opinion I can tell you that Cayde 6 was the Humuristic Engine of all history, with the necessary charisma, to earn our appreciation, I am 51 years old and I play Destiny since I started in the Beta, and Bungie should reconsider in bring our lead Hunter, like Cayde 7, recreating him in Europe. At the moment the present Story fits into the individual drama and feelings of each character and their woes as an individual, making and learning from their mistakes.
Cayde's death still sticks with me to this day. Destiny and Cayde-6 were such a big part of my life all throughout high-school. He was always such a huge inspiration for me. Dude was a Robot-Space-Cowboy, with a Magic Sun Gun, he was cool. It's crazy that I still think about this fictional characters death and get chocked up like I lost an uncle or something. I remember in High-school, my writing teacher didn't think Video Games were a valid form of story telling. So I wrote a huge ass creative writing story about Cayde lore, weaving it into one story, without telling them it was based on a video game. A few months down the line and we're talking about Fallen lore in class. TLDR: The writers did an emaculate job writing Cayde-6. So much so, that losing Cayde really felt like losing family.
It is true Cayde 6 must be brought back as Cayde 7, our leader, he left the inheritance of the Super with the Knives, so lethal that bungie had to nerfer it, the story fits perfectly with the new nightmares, just like the colleague, I have 50 years and I have been playing Destiny since the Beta, and the development of History in terms of being able to learn and assimilate your mistakes, to overcome them is applicable to life in general by being able to grow as a player and as a person, overcoming your own fears and insecurities, it could be the nightmare of our guardian, who like any human has failed but has not declined to overcome and learn from his failures, which has made him overcome his limits and grow as a better person and warrior.
Another thing this season eloquently says about trauma is that it can't be dealt with alone. Rely on your support network and find someone who can help you learn healthy coping mechanisms and most of all don't give in to despair. Eyes up, Guardians.

@@justsomedude1593 she told us after the forsaken campaign “I have only ever been a supporting character in your story.” She understands that to us there is little she can offer in terms of friendship, mainly because the guardian canonically has very few true friends as we’re always on the move and very distant, which is how we avoid entanglements like our own nightmare.
so it's even sadder because cayde didn't think she really liked him and had a recording for if she was his possible killer
@@Sean-idk no Cayde actually thanks Ikora for doing it in his message because unlike even Zavala, Cayde knew the only reason Ikora would ever kill him would be because he fell to the darkness. So he thanks her because in his mind even Zavala would kill for petty reasons, but Ikora would only do it because she knew it was best for both of them.
When our Guardian says “ You won’t have to, Uldren Sov is mine!” I get the shivers all the time! We miss you Cayde-6 🤖

So he more so blames himself for not being enough, not strong enough to protect their son and not strong enough to stay with her after. It's tragic as fuck.
Even Calus is affected
Byf, your comments at the end are very refreshing and very much the right thing to say for those facing their own recovery journey from past trauma. I listen because I love the way you present the lore, but this last portion made me so pleased as a trained crisis counselor. Kudos.
'You don't have to'. 'Uldren Sov is mine'. Such a powerful, emotional moment in all of destiny history.
"Everyone gets a nightmare" Well, except us, apparently. Though I wonder who OUR nightmare would really be? Taniks, maybe? Cause it always comes back to Taniks, apparently
Our nightmare is regrinding the same weapons we already had but lost due to content vaulting.
I imagine taniks' nightmare has been cursing us out but we just ignore it because we don't understand eliksni
I'd like to think it's the one nightmare that all of us must face in the end... I think it's Telesto
Cayde "The hive are in the middle of some kind of funeral, so..."
Eris "Not a funeral. A death ceremony. Crota's essence is being prepared for the next realm."
Cayde "Riiight. So when you get to this funeral, Oryx will be watching closely..."
Hey Byf, I have a question. What or who is Otzot, and the thing Zavala and Ghost talk about at the end of the Insight Terminus strike

I'm also pretty sure Byf has a video already covering it
I know it’s probably not going to happen like this, but if we (the Guardian) were to get a Nightmare, wouldn’t it be kinda cool if it was a Nightmare of ourselves?
It happened in shadow keep
@@ahab5735 True, but that was The Witness speaking in Shadowkeep. I’m talking about seeing a Nightmare made entirely of a darker version of ourselves. A twisted reflection that whispers in our ear constantly during missions, comprised of all the thoughts our Guardian has pushed away from their mind.
'hey, if you side with the witness, you'll get better loot' - nightmare guardian
But that wouldn't make sense since our nightmares are shadows of our past. A dark version of our Guardian hasn't existed yet and so isn't a memory or a part of our past.
@@rithvikmuthyalapati9754 Ah, you’re right. Like I said before, I know it’s probably not going to happen like that, just a fun headcanon theory.

12:21 Thank you for mentioning the "Trauma in our own way thing." I think its important that we deal with our past trauma/inner demons in our own ways.
Thank you for your kind words to those who have gone through trauma
Even as a Nightmare, Cayde has a sense of Humour!!

This season has honestly reminded me of my own personal trauma. Thanks for the words of encouragement Byf.
Thank you for your words of wisdom at the end. Many times words don’t reach me because of the walls I put up to protect myself, but your word were able to reach me and help me at this moment and time when I need it the most.
"You won't have to. Uldren Sov is mine. " Best line our guardian has ever uttered.
"Hey Ikora, here's a joke: Justice"
"I don't get it"
"And you never will"
I think the most important part of the Trespasser lore tab is that last line from the Nightmare of Cayde, "Right, Just like I'm not Cayde." We've gotten the impression so far from the main seasonal story that the trauma of the haunted person is what gives voice to the Nightmares. I think this last line really shows that Ikora knows that this isn't actually Cayde, but still can't get over the trauma.
Cayde was the best thing Bungie took from us.
That ending was something spectacular

That s right colleague
Cayde would probably be upset we got cool ice powers without him.
As soon as I read the lore I couldn't wait for this episode.
It is true Cayde 6 must be brought back as Cayde 7, our leader, he left the inheritance of the Super with the Knives, so lethal that bungie had to nerfer it, the story fits perfectly with the new nightmares, just like the colleague, I have 50 years and I have been playing Destiny since the Beta, and the development of History in terms of being able to learn and assimilate your mistakes, to overcome them is applicable to life in general by being able to grow as a player and as a person, overcoming your own fears and insecurities, it could be the nightmare of our guardian, who like any human has failed but has not declined to overcome and learn from his failures, which has made him overcome his limits and grow as a better person and warrior.
exact colleague you hit the target to what I tried to say so that the rest assimilate, what we have learned throughout our lives.
Rewatching that cutscene brought back so many emotions that I didn’t even know were still there
Another thing this season eloquently says about trauma is that it can't be dealt with alone. Rely on your support network and find someone who can help you learn healthy coping mechanisms and most of all don't give in to despair. Eyes up, Guardians.
