Thanks to my Patreons & our Ancient Ancestors.
Thank you for posting this. History is too easily forgotten.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment which helps the channel. I am glad you enjoyed the film, Martin.
It is said that Mary Queen of Scots stood atop or close by this castle at Court Knowe and watched her army fight in the Battle of Langside. Given the topography and close proximity of Battlefield it's certainly possible that she did. I grew up in nearby Castlemilk in the 1960's. I often played in and around this castle when it was a ruin. It had a big iron door at the main entrance which was shut tight so the only way to get inside the structure was to scale the walls to the first floor where there was a window. The staircase to the highest level was more or less gone but there were some stairs intact gaining access to ground level. Currently Linn Park has a children's play area and back in the day there was a house which had some of the history of the castle and sold ice cream and soft drinks. It's long gone now but I believe the occupants of the castle moved in there and made it their home when the castle started to decay. I also heard that there was a priest hole with an escape tunnel leading to the park which the council filled in with bits of the demolished castle. It appears that GCC favoured the wrecking ball, it's easier and cheaper than maintaining and preserving things for posterity. This is a link with old photographs showing the castle as I remember it. Thank you for the information and the link. I hope you enjoyed my short film.
I remember finding the ruined Cathcart Castle as a child playing in the woods with friends and family. Thanks for your research.
I am glad you enjoyed the film, I thought this site was worth making a video and documenting what is left of Cathcart Castle.
I really appreciate the effort you put into researching and filming these historical buildings, ruins, and other structures. Thank you!
Thanking you, I am glad you get something out of my channel. Thanks for leaving a comment which helps the channel.
I grew up near Cathcart Castle in the 1970s (I was born in 1960). Me and my brother often went there. Back then it was a 3 or 4 story high building and you could go inside up and up to the first level above the vaulted ground floor. The council had been trying to keep it in good odrer and they sometimes had stone masons doing maintenance work. Sadly not enough effort, or money, was spent on doing the bigger scale work that would have been needed to stop the Castle falling down so badly that it was beyond repair.
That is great you remember the castle. I hope you enjoyed the film.
There is a subsidence problem with the adjacent cliff edge. Its such a pity it wasn't secured and preserved, even as a basic shell, it would have been a beautiful monument on the hill with nice lighting added to it.
Great watch & listen, thanks Martin.
Regards
Thanking you kindly, I am happy you enjoyed the video.
I grew up on battlefield Road in the 80s & 90s and used to sneak up there to read my fantasy books happy memories
I hope you enjoyed the film, I have visited the Cathcart castle ruins twice. Thanks for leaving a comment, this helps the channel.
Pornos??????
A great wee vid - there's wee places like this dotted about all over the place and I enjoy watching you visit them.
Thanks very much, I am glad you find my videos interesting.
beauty green and a seemingly ragged Saltire
cool work as always
Thank you very much, I am glad you enjoyed my short film.
Glasgow District Council neglected it then destroyed it. I used to climb through it back in the 70's. There are old postcards which feature it.Quite common on ebay.
I have seen old photos online of the castle. I hope you enjoyed the short film. Thanks for leaving a comment. Happy 2025.
Used to live near there. Lovely walks by the river. Old smiddy is a good wee pub as well.
I walked past those ruins many times.
I enjoy the White Cart River walk and the waterfall. I have walked past the Old Smiddy but never been in.
Thanks for this. So many of these estate houses, or big houses as we call them, have been lost. Interesting as always.
I hope you enjoyed the film. I have went off topic for this video but I thought it was worth documenting. Thanks again for leaving a comment.
@BeforeCaledonia maybe a little but these ruins also played a part in our history.
I think this is an important part of Glasgow history which a lot of people don't know about.
Haggs Castle is Glasgow’s other surviving castle, formerly one of the Maxwell's castles it was restored by the victorians and still in residential use today. Was valued as Glasgow’s most expensive house some years back though has probably been surpassed since.
Thanks for the information on Haggs Castle, I didn't know about it.
THANK YOU MARTIN 👍🙏>>>💚
Glad you enjoyed it.
Lived just up the road in Simshill from 1968 until 1985 so remember the castle well. Used to play there as a young teenager. I've got a photograph I took of it around 1978. Must try and find it but it's somewhere in a box of thousands of other pics that are totally disorganised.
That's great you remember the castle before it was knocked down. I hope you enjoyed the film.
@@BeforeCaledonia great work. Have u done a film yet on the earthworks on the hill of nearby Queens Park? I believe it is from the bronze age ?
Yes, there is a video on Campbell Earthworks in Queens Park in my Glasgow & Edinburgh section.
@@BeforeCaledonia I'll need to check that out 👍🏼
I have a brand new film going out tonight on The Argyle Stone & St Convals Chariot in Renfrew.
Sad that these buildings were not cherished and an attempt to restore.
These types of structure will never be built again...
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Yup...used to play there as a kid...had a few good chestnut trees...in the 1950's...
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, I hope you enjoyed the film.
Glasgow city council have a long history in destruction of our shared history, shown in her historical buildings. Left to rack and ruin, so many of our beautiful, interesting buildings have disappeared. Mores the pity

I have to admit, I hadn't even known about Cathcart Castle. It sounds like an interesting site. It is a shame about the state of the site.
It's not that well known and tricky to find. The castle is in an interesting area, Linn park, the waterfall, the old smiddy, snuff mill bridge etc...
@@BeforeCaledonia I've been to Linn Park. Maybe I should go back and try to see if I can find the ruins
I used to play there before it got knocked down.
That's great you remember the castle before it was demolished. I have seen online photos when it was still standing. Thanks for leaving a comment.
It should be kept well and maintained by the local council.
They probably don't want people going in there, it is hidden away and forgotten about.
We lost another "medieval" building quite recently when the "College Bar" was demolished following a 'mysterious' fire. Could that have been because the city council had plans to redevelop the site?🤔 No, not them.😇 (aye right!)🤬
